Later this month on 19th August, Netflix will premiere its new documentary series High Score. It will focus on the "the golden age of video games" - covering the brains behind the success, the games, and how the industry has evolved over the years.
Perhaps the most interesting part about it - at least for Nintendo fans, is the fact it's being narrated by the one and only Charles Martinet (aka the voice of Super Mario). This has been discovered in the recent opening credits trailer uploaded by IGN. You can see Martinet's name pop up at the 32-second mark. Take a look below:
Here's the official description of High Score, courtesy of Netflix:
High Score is a documentary series about the golden age of video games, when legends - from Pac-Man to Doom - were brought to life. Through ingenuity and sheer force of will, computer pioneers and visionary artists from around the globe spawned the iconic worlds of Space Invaders, Final Fantasy, Street Fighter II, Mortal Kombat, Sonic the Hedgehog, MADDEN NFL, and beyond. Without rules or roadmaps, players and innovators alike pushed the limits of money to be made, rivals to be crushed, and hearts to be won. This is the story of the brains behind the pixels and how their unmatched innovation built a multi-billion dollar industry - almost by accident. High Score premieres on Netflix on August 19, 2020.

If he’s doing the Mario voice then hell yes. the history of video games is filled with many fascinati- WA HOO
I remember some promotional video Nintendo released where they had Martinet narrarate the entire presentation in Mario voice. The man's great at what he does, dont get me wrong. But there's only so much Mario voice you can run together before it gets truly obnoxious.
I couldn't think of a better narrator for a video game documentary if I tried. I can't wait to check High Score out.
Great! There's a shortage of video game documentaries. I know there's plenty of interesting videos on YouTube, but documentaries... not so many.
Anyway, Madden NFL... Was that really important to highlight it? LOL
There was a time this man was narrating Grossology (1997), talking about poop and diarrhoea in a video game in the most disgusting New Yorker accent I have ever heard.
I want him to narrate in that voice.
Hoping this is good.
The “toys that made us” and “movies that made us” series on Netflix are fantastic. Great production quality and editing.
If this can hold to that standard, I am very excited.
One of the first episodes is about Sonic, so I'll definitely check it out.
Now, are these episodes complete overviews or just how they all got started? Because if they're covering all of Sonic's history... hoo boy, best grab some popcorn.
@Moroboshi876 of course madden is classic. the only way a fat old white guy can get his name on games for more than 20 years until eternity #MaddenIsLegend
@SoManyHaveDied Tell that to Steve FIFA, Vladimir Tetris or Frank Street-Fighter.
Definitely worth a watch for sure. I'm super interested in gaming history.
It'll be weird to hear his real voice!
@GealachNua @SoManyHaveDied Of course, guys, I know that series is huge, but what I meant was I thought it was weird to see the name among authentic classics of the History of Video Games. I would've never expected a sports game there. That's all.
I, by the way, have never played a Madden or a NFL game for that matter. I'm Europe based, so I would have related to a FIFA reference there, but I would've found it surprising too.
@Moroboshi876 stateside, it's huge. it's like, frat bros buy a console STRICTLY for madden. i do miss when he was on the actual cover tho......
@ROBLOGNICK @Desrever It'll probably be something closer to the voice he uses to narrate the Runner games.
Although Jesus Christ it would be a beautiful nightmare if he did the whole thing in Mario voice.
They have Martinet on as narrator, but neglected to list any of Nintendo games in their "Official Description" = FAIL
Looking forward to it
@Indielink
"Although Jesus Christ it would be a beautiful nightmare if he did the whole thing in Mario voice."
"Jesus Christ"?
@nessisonett during the videogame crash, thousands upon thousands lost their jobs. Owowowowowo
@nessisonett he sounds pretty cool in Bit Trip Runner too.
I have netflix but dont watch anything but this i will watch. Looks cool
Checked out the preview on Netflix and it looks pretty good. Gonna have to watch it.
This will be so much fun to watch! People don’t realize how much work and ingenuity went into those early games!
Pls start with "Letseh go" and "Night Night"
Oh no thanks! I'm sorry, I have nothing against the man's success, but his Mario/ Luigi voice annoys the ever-living crap outta me, and I'm rather biased to the late Lou Albano and Danny Wells voicing my favorite plumber heros.
