Re: Reminder: Nintendo Is Ending 3DS And Wii U Online Play Early Next Month

HylianFox

Sadly, this is the future of gaming from here on out.

It used to be you bought a console, some game carts/discs, and could play as much as you wanted until either of those things broke or died.

But now, with the emphasis on "always online" and frequent updates, there comes a point where the servers shut down and the game loses some functionality or even becomes unplayable.

Thank god there's a dedicated fanbase of hardcore nerds who can find ways to circumvent this, but even they can only do so much (provided they aren't slapped down by the Powers That Be).

Re: Kirby Happy Meal Promotion Announced For McDonald's Japan

HylianFox

As much as I love Kirby, it's kind of annoying that the plushies are mostly the same. Not even different abilities.

Usually when I collect Happy Meal toys, I ask which ones they have on hand. With all the Kirbies being so similar that makes it hard to be specific.

"Do you have the Kirby plushie? No not that one, the one where he's winking."

Re: Talking Point: Do You Want To See Colourful Cartridges Return For 'Switch 2'?

HylianFox

My old copy of 'Donkey Kong Land 2' for the Game Boy was missing its label, but I could always tell it apart by the yellow cartridge.

I have a copy of 'Star Wars Episode 1 Racer' for the Game Boy Color. Not only did it have a translucent cart, but it also had built-in rumble feature. So far the only game I know of that had one. The game itself was mediocre, but it sure was a unique experience.

An interesting thing about NES carts is that if you had an odd-colored one, it was typically bootleg.
Be it the black, angular Tengen carts or the robin's egg blue Wisdom Tree carts. Aside from 'Zelda' all of the official NES carts were the same old grey. Only the Famicom tended to get any unique colors.

Re: Retailer GAME Is Officially Ending Physical Trade-Ins (UK)

HylianFox

Trade-ins always felt like a scam to me.
"Give us a couple of $50 games and we'll cut $10 off the price of a new game." like what's the point? I'd much rather keep my old games thank you.
The only reason I ever go into any "video game" store these days is to check out their other merch.

Re: Random: Wait, Is Ocarina Of Time 3D Old Now?

HylianFox

@-wc- As much as I enjoy new games there's no denying that developers don't really experiment with play control anymore.

I guess the old adage "don't fix what isn't broken" applies. Even touch & motion controls ended up as little more than a passing fad (barring mobile gaming, which exclusively uses touch controls for obvious reasons). Virtually every modern game uses traditional controls.

(That said, I wouldn't mind seeing the DS Zelda games remade with non-touch controls as an option...)

Re: Random: Wait, Is Ocarina Of Time 3D Old Now?

HylianFox

I was 12 when OoT first released for the N64, now I'm 37.

@-wc- Yeah, the old camera was very cinematic, but I've gotten used to the "left stick move, right stick camera" control style that's pretty much the standard in every game.

I actually just gave my mom my old Switch and a copy of BotW for Christmas, she's so used to playing OoT/TWW/TP that I had to keep telling her to use the right stick to move the camera so that she could actually see what she was doing.

Re: Soapbox: Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom's Busier Hyrule Is Making Me Miss BOTW

HylianFox

I kinda feel the same way, there are a lot of distractions in this game, almost to the point of annoyance. BOTW was that way too, but TOTK is a step beyond.

That being said, it makes sense for TOTK to be "busier" then BOTW. BOTW was essentially a fresh new start for the Zelda series, and needed to take it slow (not to mention Nintendo took a huge risk with it). And to be fair BOTW does get kind of boring after a while with its endless wildernesses and deserted ruin followed by deserted ruin.

I want to see this new Hyrule bursting with excitement. I want to see Castle Town and the other ruined villages restored to their former glory, with tons to see and do.

Like I said, the many distractions in TOTK are almost an annoyance, but not quite. Like in BOTW I never feel as though I wasted my time even if I didn't accomplish the task at hand.

To me, that's brilliant game design.

Re: Random: Sakurai Explains The Basics Of Pixel Art In His Latest Video

HylianFox

"Also, did you know that the Kirby sprite in Kirby's Adventure gets a little plumper when taking on a copy ability? That was news to us, and Sakurai shows it in action above."

I did, actually. If you look closely you can see that his gut(?) covers up his hand(??), both hands(???) are visible when Normal. He also turns orange using a copy, but that's more obvious.

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl Duel: Yoshi's Story

HylianFox

I'd say the Japanese version barely edges out for being more artistic. Let's be honest, a lot of those 90s era 3D renders have not aged well.
Donkey Kong Country springs immediately to mind. The games themselves are amazingly gorgeous, but the CGI renders of DK and the gang are... disturbing.
