Poll: Box Art Brawl Duel: Yoshi's Story

Japan cover has so much more personality, its cute and cozy, both things I associate with Yoshi, clear winner in my eyes.
US Cover just looks like veggie tales of something

Embroidery aesthetic aside, the Japanese cover almost has a 1980s or 1990s anime feel to it, which is my favorite era for anime. The character poses, the background, and even the kanji above their heads all remind me of an anime for kids from that era. The North American/European version is okay, but a lot of those kinds of covers are a dime a dozen on the Nintendo 64, so it's a bit generic. So I think Japan takes it this time around.

I usually go Japan but not this time. I think it looks like a 2d SNES game, and is generic. The NA/Europe one doesn't look great necessarily but at least you kind of know what you're getting.

Did vote for EUR/Na but both look extremly cute.

The western one is great, but the Japanese one just oozes cuteness that is just a little bit more Yoshi, I feel.

Can't go wrong with either though. But I love the Japanese one here, may be one of my favorite box arts ever.

Also, the western one is like they're posing for an album cover. The Japanese one is very much a family picture. Both get points for that!

Just don’t like those N64-era 3D renders, and never have. They’ve not aged well. The Japanese cover is a bit saccharine, but I far prefer it

The JPN version is objectively better. But I’d also have been twice as embarrassed to buy it as a single man.

The Yoshi greeting inside the “o” ruined the NA cover for me… japan for the win

I like the artistic look of the Japanese cover, however, I had to vote for the North American/European box art.

the Western box gives a good indication of what the game looks like, but the Japanese box art is cute, which goes a long way with me personally.

Western one kind of falls apart the longer you look at it because of the weird poses and how the border sort of divides the image. Japan for me. That art is incredibly cozy and Yoshi is all about that, imo, even with the more difficult stages in some of the games.

I don't use the word 'hero' very often, but you, are the greatest hero, in Nintendo Life history.

This one is so hard for me to choose. They both look really nice but go for completely different styles and art.

I miss the days when the West and Japan have different boxarts.

Had to go with Japan, and it's not even close.

While it's true that the US box might be a better representation of what the game's aesthetic actually is, those early 3D renders just haven't aged well, while the JPN box is pure art.

I voted for NA, but after looking at them both again, I should have voted for the JP box instead. I find it to be more appealing.

NA/EU for me. My first N64 game and a real good one I enjoy playing a level here and there still on NS online. Nostalgia probably tops it for me on this one with the cover association in part, but I think the JP one is too Snes like, like it could have been for Yoshi's Island, which is no bad thing, but maybe says less about what the game is.

I like both, but I'd go for the NA/Europe version - partly because I had that one and hold a lot of nostalgia for it, partly because it's a better representation of what the game looks like.

I really like the Euromerican design, but their creepy lizard-like hands are unsettling. On the other hand, the Japanese design is great but I feel like if you touched one of those Yoshis you'd get the worst static shock of your life. Tough choice.

After 'Wooly World' and 'Crafted World' Yoshi's Story really should have been called 'Cardboard World' (Diorama World?)

I'd say the Japanese version barely edges out for being more artistic. Let's be honest, a lot of those 90s era 3D renders have not aged well.
Donkey Kong Country springs immediately to mind. The games themselves are amazingly gorgeous, but the CGI renders of DK and the gang are... disturbing.

The box art is nice but still would not be able to save this. I rented it from Blockbuster as a teen (and cannot explain how disappointed and confused I was), and I still wanted to return it today. That WAAAA WA WA WA WAAAA is BURNED into my brain.

Japan, easily. As others have said, I don't think the 3D renders on the US cover really hold up. But on top of that, US N64 covers are the worst due to the red strip on the right side and the peeling corner on the top right. Both of those box-art features were ill advised in my opinion and always drag down the quality of the box art.

edit: the more I look at the western cover, the worse the composition seems to get.

Can't go wrong with either, really. But once again, what was the NoA thinking by using the red strip on the box art?

At least the Japanese cartridge art retains the fuzzy 2D Yoshis.

North America/Europe shows what the game is like but Japan is stylistically better in my opinion. Japan for me

The North American/European version is my choice by miles. A great showcase of a new Yoshi game box art for a new generation of consoles at the time.

Vote surprises me, not a fan of either to be honest but the Americans one wins for me. Just something I don't like about the Japanese boxart.

I'm gonna go function over form on this one. The Japanese one deceptively makes it seem like this game is like Yoshi's Island. It is very far removed from that game. Also, the appeal of the game was the graphics, and those are better advertised by the Western cover.

Gotta give this one to Japan I love the style they used making it look so cozy and stylish and just the sort of game I would buy in a absolute instant.

Japan might not be as literal a representation of the game as the US/Europe one, but it really does convey the general vibe a lot better in my opinion.

Plus it’s just adorable. There’s no way I wouldn’t pick that up in a shop to look at it, the the other? Maybe, maybe not. That is, in a hypothetical world where I didn’t know what Yoshi was.

Ahh wow! I always appreciated the fact the manual for the North American version of the game didn't follow the standard N64 format, but I didn't realize it was using the Japanese version of the game as a basis! That's incredible!

Both look nice but it's the NA/EU cover for me. The Japanese one looks more like it would be an artbook or something.

Japan is miles away the prettier, but is it the most commercially viable of the two options?

I honestly just really like the style of Japan’s one. I’ve always loved Yoshi, apparently when I was younger i would watch my dad play NSMBW and when he would get off Yoshi at the end of a level I would say “bye bye green dragon”.

I'm voting for the NA cover since it better-represents the art style of this game, while the other is more hinting that they wished they could have done Yarn/Crafted-style games sooner.

I don't feel that the Japanese one is unrepresentative of the game, as the background features in many of the levels.

Nor do I find the 3D renders for the western art all that garish.

Both lose points for lack of Poochy.

I hafta go with the Japanese one, the hand stitched fuzzy look is pretty cute.
