What do Super Mario 3D All-Stars, Super Mario Bros. 35 and Jump Rope Challenge all have in common? They're all limited-time releases and well...according to our very own American-based video producer Zion Grassl, it's bad for everyone. Heck, even The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Anniversary Edition got a limited run (for free) in 2011 and was then pulled off the shelves in 2012. Nintendo then brought it back for a whopping four days in 2014 before removing it again.
Cutting to the chase - our video producer thinks it's bad for game preservation, bad business, and most of all bad for the consumer when they are eventually left with no option but an overpriced pre-owned game. Adding to this, it doesn't even make sense to pull the digital versions. Of course, it could all be to do with marketing and encouraging fans to purchase certain products sooner rather than later. To hear Zion's full thoughts, check out his latest Nintendo Life video above.

That's the problem with companies like Nintendo, we don't want to support them when they do things like this, but we all want Mario 3d All-Stars, so we buy it anyway. Maybe Nintendo's just getting mixed messages.
'consumer' please no, we're customers, not things that consume products like cows lol. anyway nice article, but i also really believe it's because of the fact that data miners (hackers) found out when it got leaked on the internet - that nintendo >> - << sigh, they stinking used a homebrew of people who did the port themselves, and are now taking credit for it...plus making a profit out of a job others did. not such a great move new nintendo.
In the context of the releases, I'm not convinced business was at the forefront or at least profits. One is a birthday event designed to raise Mario's profile rather than be this years next big thing and the other was a beautiful gesture for a very difficult time. If fans (who shouldn't care tbh) are so obsessed with profits, it will standardise the industry and rob us of some magical moments. . And Nintendo like to have their moments. We are gamers. Not investors. Not consumers. Saying stuff like this is bad business is depressing to me.
I guess short term it wouldn't matter keeping 3D All Stars as a permanent release but if Nintendo adds N64 support to the online subscription then they might feel a bit cheeky charging for SM64 when if it's included for 'free' with online. If this isn't the reason and these games aren't available seperately in the future... then yes it's a poor showing for fans unable to get it during the limited release window.
"What are your own thoughts about Nintendo's limited-time releases?"
It was disturbing my shopping schedule as i have planned to buy specific games from Tokopedia and i have to put Super Mario 3D All Stars on my shopping list immediately before March 2021.
@MidnightLaces What do you mean? They did not use somebody else's work and take the credit for it at all. There is a homebrew port, yeah, but this is emulation. Maybe i'm misunderstanding you?
Four Swords got it worse, it's a local multiplayer game that got a second chance only on 3DS, so anyone who had system transferred missed their only chance at having it on multiple systems to take advantage of the multiplayer features.
Thank you Captain Obvious! Honestly what annoys me now even more than this admittedly problematic release is NL obsession to repeatedly be going over this with many articles daily. Haven't we all discussed this till we were blue in the face already?
C A P I T A L I S M
Please stop acting surprised and outraged at this stuff.
I've no problem with it being a limited time release. Makes my copy feel all the more special.
It's not like ps5 preorder where it was dropped out of nowhere. People were given advanced warning and for anyone genuinely interested in buying the game 6 months is plenty of time
And don't get me started on those debug cubes...
Is this all we are going to have the next few months is moaning about this game , u got 3 games classic games get over it , if ur unhappy take it back sick of see this
I have to say, as a lifelong Nintendo fan (my first console was an NES and I've owned every Nintendo console - except the Virtual Boy - since then) I'm EXTREMELY disappointed with Mario 3D All Stars.
I had, of course, heard all the rumors of the upcoming 3D All Stars prior to the announcement and expected to see a compilation worthy of the "All Stars" title. I remember the massive rework Nintendo did with Super Mario All Stars back on the SNES, modernising all the games from the ground up, and I would have expected 3D All Stars to do the same. I thought Mario 64 would probably get remade in the Odyssey engine (remember the Mushroom Kingdom level in Odyssey - I thought for sure that was Nintendo testing the grounds for a more fulsome project). I expected Sunshine and Galaxy to mostly be upscaled (as they were) but with some better textures.
Instead we got an upscaled Mario 64 (which didn't even come with any of the extra features from the 3DS version) running in a horrid 30fps. This is one of the most important and influential games of all time - it deserved better.
Sunshine also runs in 30fps and since its release we've seen that it has debug boxes because the whole thing is just an emulator. Galaxy, meanwhile, looks fantastic but the motion controls feel awful and just a bit of work from Nintendo to create a new control scheme that makes using the Pro pad a bit easier could have fixed that.
Basically, 3D All Stars doesn't feel like a celebration. It feels like a quick cash grab, a lazily slopped together collection that is little more than an emulator running on official Nintendo hardware. It isn't worthy of the All Stars name. I found I couldn't enjoy myself playing it, such was my disappointment with what Nintendo have done here. If I could return it I would, but alas, I bought it from the eShop so a mere deletion from my SD card must suffice.
I'm also disappointed with the gaming press, including Nintendo Life, for giving Nintendo a free pass on the laziness of this release. Nintendo Life's own review bemoaned the lack of extra features, yes, but said that the underlying games are still incredible and gave it a 9. While one can say that a review is subjective by nature, I feel that noting the laziness but giving it a 9 is being far too forgiving. Nintendo Life in an article earlier today tried to excuse the debug boxes in Sunshine by referencing the pandemic, which is yet a further example of how the gaming press are trying to apologise for Nintendo with this slipshod release. Pandemic or not, I think it's disappointingly clear that Nintendo probably always planned to do as little work as possible and simply cash in on nostalgia with this one. If not, they would never have released this for public consumption.
I don't think we should excuse what Nintendo has done here, we should condemn it. Mario, and Nintendo fans in particular, deserve better treatment than this.
Anything digital will naturally have a shelf life anyway, as soon as the servers get switched off you’ll never be able to legally re-download it again.
I think the rushed nature of the emulations, the lack of control options and the omission of Galaxy 2 are probably the worst parts of the package at this point.
I was pootling around on my 3DS the other day and noticed my 3DS Ambassador GBA games, so Nintendo have been doing limited releases for quite a while now.
Limited release bugged me before but not now.
It's an anniversary release not a full set of remasters. I would have preferred something better and something more from Nintendo but I'm ok with it all. I'm having fun as a gamer.
What do we expect out of gaming companies? They make bucket loads of money.
There is no problem with the game itself, you just lack any business sense. Nintendo has been a successful company since 1889. You haven't been on this planet long enough and you're clearly too self entitled as a gamer to come to grips that Nintendo just gave gamers what they want.
Giving the customers what they want is good business sense and if that's not good enough, the CEO took a pay cut when the Wii U undersold so the employees could be paid. Seems to me Nintendo is the only company that cares enough about its employees before its CEO's own money.
Bad business? I think that the sales figures will disagree with that sentiment.
Maybe pressure works on other people, I just lose any and all motivation to do/buy the thing you want me to do/buy.
@TeamRocket47 There is no mixed messaging. Speak with your wallet. It's the clearest and only message they understand.
maybe show some courage for once and don't buy the game. then the componies will actually think about their shady business strategies.
but no. sadly gamers have no courage.
Value is at play here.
It's not their fault you, or I, would feel this is too rich for our blood.
But I know many who would pay for 20 dollars each, so there is that.
Hell, iam8bit had 100 dollar SNES carts that still sold through.
Well I'm loving going back through them. I own the originals but it's a great excuse to play again and the freedom of handheld is perfect for me.
The limited thing is confusing so it will be interesting to see what happens, maybe they'll sell them separately or something.
I don’t fully agree. Nintendo can do what they want, people can buy the game if they want it during the allotted time of its release. It’s not like we haven’t been warned.
Plus these are re-releases of games that have already been physically and digitally released before.
How did we cope back in the day when no game developer had a digital store front to rerelease old games when they felt like it? We’ve never had it better when it comes to accessing games from all previous generations. I’m guessing this unhappiness stems from us having to pay again to access them.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Nintendo release each game separately on the eShop come April 2021 anyway (without the soundtracks).
Honestly at this point it seems as though the heated arguments about the game have overshadowed any 'problems' the release itself had. I was a bit disappointed that we didnt see a remaster along the lines of the throwback galaxy from Galaxy 2, but im so weary of peoples 'anti-whinging' whinging that i just dont care.
Im glad some people are satisfied but the 'omg stop whining'' crowd are adding nothing to the discussion. Instead of whinging about the product, theyre just whinging about other players. Thats still whining, they're just rationalising their whining as being more mature.
Personally im interested to read through people's passionate views on the game positive or negative. I like reading what they think and why. What im tired of reading is 'dont moan', 'dont complain', 'dont whine' etc. It adds nothing to the discussion. Seems like this crap happens more and more. I witness it all the time in the PoGO community also. Companies aren't perfect and people are entitled to their views and opinions. Stifle the debate and how is there any room for improvement?
@MidnightLaces 'things that consume products like cows' I'm afraid when you come down to it that is exactly what we are like.
I'm like 100% sure these three games (plus SMG 2) will be available separately on the eShop after March. The only thing missing will be the soundtracks.
If you watch the video, the criticism is very measured and constructive. It is not whiny nor outraged.
You are allowed to like and even purchase a product, and still have certain reservations about it. It need not be binary. People moaning about the valid criticism is just moral masturbation at this point. We get it, you don't have any issues with this game. Have a sticker. No, make it a gold sticker. You've earned it.
Regarding the matter at hand, as I've said before, imagine working at a games store in April 2021, and having to tell the parent wanting a buy a Switch and 3D All Stars for their child that you can longer get the latter. Not because of a shortage, but because Nintendo.
The problem is they completely ignored galaxy 2 the second best game in the entire series! There wasn't even a mention of it in that 35th anniversary clip celebrating the entire series. I mean come on what the hell Nintendo?
The question I would like to put to anyone who might know, is, since we have had time to look back on the previous games mentioned, has a reason emerged about Nintendo's strategy for doing things the way they did?
If so we should understand more about what Nintendo's strategy is for 3d All Stars, in the months to come.
I am a critic of Nintendo, but mostly I hope it's constructive criticism. The obvious reason for their actions is to boost sales before the tax year ends.
But I would rather think, and I do think, its tied in with the release of the Pro in Mach. Although I don't think they will name it Pro.
@Zeldafan79
Seems bizarre branding to me. Even those who didn't play the original on the SNES will probably know it now as they recently released it for the online service, leaving unfavourable comparisons unavoidable.
If they called it the Super Mario 3D Trilogy, or Collection, I probably would have seen it as just 3 good ports. As it is, the lack of a fourth game, Galaxy 2, and the lack of a graphical update, is jarring and just doesn't rhyme.
My biggest issue is just how bare bones this is as a collection. They def knocked this out in an afternoon. I bought it because I really want these games on my switch, but come on Nintendo seize the moment and do something a little more special with these
@Franklin
I would have been okay with little effort put into sunshine and galaxy but mario 64 really needed alot of work. It would have been nice to have that one at least be widescreen and made a little easier on the eyes like what was done with the 3DS remakes of Zelda OOT and MM.
Have wifi, must complain. Apparently.
No one is forcing you to buy this. Stop playing the victim.
I for one welcome my Mario overlords, since two of these games I did not play when they were first released.
Paid £45 in the end as Amazon knocked off a fiver post delivery.
So £15 a game. I definitely would have paid £20 or so for individual ports and if those were available I doubt people would have been complaining. Just think of this as a bulk buy of 3 fairly priced ports rather than a collection.
Some of the improvements people have been demanding (remake 64 in Odyssey’s engine - yeah sure) would have resulted in prices of £50 per game - and let’s face it all 3 wouldn’t have got that sort of treatment during this year of COVID. Let’s be realistic here please.
@Marios-love-child "it makes my copy feel more special"
That's disturbing on many levels.
@janpampoen and anyone buying a Switch after the limited window, or just not able to get the game will not have chance to play the games at all. Maybe you shouldn't have missed the "limited" availability of these games 20 years ago.
THE GAME IS IN YOUR HANDS ! What are you unhappy about ? 6 months is plenty, anyone interrested has their chance of grabbing the game.
The real problem with 3D All Stars is in fact that Nintendo didn't put its "blood sweat and tears" in it. They delivered a barebone collection and gave these games a mediocre treatment.
Nintendo need to cut this mentality, and stop copying Disney.
They literally play it into the hands of scalpers with ideas like this.
It's unfair on the loyal Nintendo fan.
Shrewed business tactic.
Say what you want about Microsoft, but they take great care of fans.
It’s rubbish of course. I’m pretty certain the only reason it’s happened is because Nintendo have had to delay other games and wanted to compress the inevitable huge profits from this into the Financial Year.
It may encourage them to do this again in the future but generally they make a lot of money from their games having long legs. It’s also not clear that doing this with something as popular as a Mario compilation tells them much about how effective it will be with a smaller franchise.
So yeah, pretty rubbish for Consumers. But as someone who bought the game I can’t complain about it happening again in the future.
@brunojenso
If anything Cows consume stuff they actually need to stay alive. This is an ephemeral entertainment product that nobody actually needs
One aspect of this artificial scarcity that Nintendo has created surrounding Super Mario 3D All-Stars has to be examined from the corporate/stockholder angle. Without a major tentpole title (sorry, Pikmin 3 Deluxe wouldn't have counted) heading into a holiday season where both Microsoft and Sony are launching new consoles that will create even more of a system power disparity with the Switch, Nintendo was in a potentially disastrous position from a quarterly earnings and stockholder confidence standpoint.
So, what to do to fill that time period in such a way as to maximize short-term profits and have some inflated sales figures to tout at the next business meeting? Release a compilation of some of their biggest and best-selling Mario games and force consumers to purchase it within that window by making it a "limited run", of course.
Read between the lines and you can sense a bit of desperation in this on Nintendo's part. It's been revealed that all three of these games are simply being emulated, and there's even the infamous "debug cubes" issue that users are questioning. Knowing that historically Nintendo has always been meticulously focused on quality with their "AAA" first-party IPs, had they suddenly become lazy and sloppy? Or is it perhaps because this entire compilation was rushed into production (please keep in mind the gaps between and delays with major first-party releases dating back to last year as well) in order to avoid the aforementioned disastrous fourth quarter?
We consumers can debate endlessly about whether the limited run for Super Mario 3D All-Stars is "bad business" and wonder why there's often such a disconnect between what we often want from publishers and what we keep getting. We can be angry and frustrated by the ever-encroaching business models the industry creates to simultaneously squeeze more money out of us and control/gate our access to products (in their words, "services") we've legally paid a lot of money for. At the end of that day, though, the answers are both simple and, in some ways, unpleasant. We're not the most important party when it comes to their priorities or their business decisions; their stockholders are. And when you want the real motives behind the decisions of any corporation, just follow the money.
It's obvious they would have made more money not making it limited, so that is not the reason. I think they just want to make a celebration for a limited time and the limited time is sort of part of the experience. I'm sure they'll make these games available in another form later on.
On another note, my friend works in Game.
And she said some kid was pure booing, as he couldn't get a copy.
Some guy actually have up his preorder,as this kid was balling that he had missed out.
@electrolite77 Absolutely, people thinking they are above animals makes me laugh. The only way we might be superior in a way that actually means something, or leads to something good is our ability to increase our minds of compassion/empathy/care of others - particularly other creatures.
That and our ability for creative and artistic expression. Animals may have compassion - but they can't train in actively increasing it like we can - and that I personally think is our main saving grace (if we use it). Our intelligence doesn't naturally or necessarily lead to good things. Of all the planets 'consumers' we are the most deserving of the word.
@Richnj you are clearly disturbed very easily then
@Savino They're not bad. They're incredibly fun actually.
The way people are going on you would think this game was only available for a month or so, when in fact it's available for 6 months, and we still do not know Nintendo's plans for these games, for example they could be all getting individual releases on the e-Shop, and this is just a bonus price for all three games to celebrate Mario's 35th anniversary, this was obviously always going to be a limited time offer.
@Savino,
Perhaps Nintendo do not like messing with the look of these games, and to be honest it's only Mario 64 that looks a little dated, and I can't imagine that game looking any different without losing it's charm.
I don't see the issue with a limited time release. Every game has a limited release in the end, they just they all have different end dates if you will. There are many games over the years I have regretted not getting cause they are eventually impossible to get with out being crazy over priced. But I always ensure to get the games I really want so that is not an issue.
I've seen comments that people couldn't get a copy on release, well it's safe to say there will be more released before the end of the window they announced. So I hope they will get their copy in the end. This is an anniversary release so I wouldn't expect it to be around as long as let's say Breath of the wild. It's not here to sell the system, but to celebrate Mario 35th anniversary.
I don't know, but I'm excited to play these games again with upscaled visuals even if it just cleans them up a bit, it's welcomed.
I know this is unpopular of an opinion, but I think this is being made into way bigger of an issue then t really is. There are more important things to talk about, like where is the Metroid Prime trilogy so I can buy those games again for the 4th time each. Lol
@Anti-Matter Last I remember, you don't have to do anything you don't want to do.
And if it's a matter of buying games now versus later, are all the games you plan on buying limited releases? Why can't you buy Mario 3D All-stars now and a game later that you know will be available?
„bad for the consumer“ how is this bad?
We have time until beginning of the next year or to the end of this business year? That should be enough time for people to decide to purchase a copy! Regarding to individuals that don’t have a Switch that considering getting one cause of 3D Allstars (which is hard for me to believe) well still enough time to get both. Besides that will help sales this holiday season. Ahhh we see.
Imagine they never released a 3D Allstar! 🤷♂️
I'm really surprised why people are confused on this one. Nintendo is a very Japanese company and this is an example of:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ichi-go_ichi-e
I'm fine with the 3d collection .I got digital and my g/f got physical.amazon also is back in stock dont buy from scalpers.it is only 59
@Coach_A I'd argue we need to be MORE outraged by this stuff, you know, like actually making it NOT WORK OUT for them.
@UmbreonsPapa
I have planned to buy very rare old games from my local online shop, mostly PS2 PS1 and PSP games according to my default plan but the limited time of Mario 3D All Stars disturbing my plan as i still have awareness of out of stock if i buy late. But i have checked from Tokopedia, the stock are still so many but i must buy that game before end of March 2021.
Actually i don't really want to play 3D Mario games at the moment as i still have priority on other games, mostly old games that sold with very cheap prices so i want to take them as possible while it still available. I measured from the rarity and priority. 3D Mario games are great but my hype with that games right now is very low so i might want to buy in heartbeat but after i get the game, i might neglect them quickly as my hype changed again for another games. I have experienced with my backlogs that still neglected so i have to make sure the main priority of the games i want to buy first.
According to my plan, i want to get Para Para Paradise PS2 bundle (controller + game in box) from local game shop as that item was extremely rare, only 1 left and so far nobody have desire to buy that "niche" game so it will be mine after i get salary. Also, my default plan are getting the very rare PS2 and PS1 games as their price was insane cheap. The old games in 1 quantity are more important than new games that i still have a chance to buy them late, even until today i still haven't bought some 1st party Switch such as Luigi Mansion 3,Captain Toad, Super Mario Maker 2, etc. I have interest with them but my hype with them at the moment is still very low so i will buy them late maybe 2 or 3 years later after i got the main priority games.
@Franklin I understand this point. My opinion is that I don't think a kid is gonna miss something they probably never wanted to begin with. I just don't think anyone under a certain age is clamoring for a collection of decades-plus old games. I would imagine Pokémon, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Animal Crossing or some other more recent game/franchise will be on their wishlist. I would imagine if there's a 3D Mario they want, my feeling is that Mario Odyssey would be #1 on their list.
I could be very well off base as I can't exactly say I'm in tune with what kids know or are in to these days. Just speaking from my own experience of having a 7 year old who is begging for her own Switch and this 3D collection not necessarily registering with her. She has been begging to play 3D World, which I was ready to buy again for the Wii U. But I'm gonna hold off for obvious reasons
I can understand this collection and it's limited release being inconvenient for older gamers with experience with these games who aren't in any position to buy a game for the foreseeable future and don't know when they ever will be. But I can't see Nintendo not having these games available some form or fashion after March 2021. The capability is there now.
@AlienX maybe next year on Switch, Four Swords may get another chance... Maybe with cross platform wireless... Maybe for free again... Or maybe time limited, €20, Switch only,... Or even not at all. Neither would surprise me all that much at this point.
@AtlanteanMan Bingo!
It wasn't bad business for me. I've been enjoying the heck out of it. I've not had any issues with any of the games, other than remembering I'm a bit horrid at them. That still hasn't tempered my enjoyment and laughter. Products come and go, I'm too fussed about real life to be bothered by the logistical choices a company makes.
With major first-party Nintendo releases (eg a new entry in the Mario Kart, Zelda or Super Mario series) I've bought on release day for probably the last 10 years anyway. There's usually little reason to wait as you know the price rarely drops on these as with other systems (e.g. you can usually pick up the ps4's best games for less than £20 each within a year of release). Removing them digitally is just weird though. The Switch is still bringing in new customers and basically Nintendo are just depriving them of one of their best titles.
I don't mind the limited time release concept. It's weird and for whatever reason, I assume Nintendo has some unpleasant investors breathing down their necks to push more sales this holiday season since 2020 has been an overall weak year in terms of triple A titles from the company. However, as a huge fan of each 3D Mario in this compilation, each of them holding a special place in my heart for their nostalgia, difficulty, quirks, and blemishes, I have to say I feel ripped off for purchasing this. It isn't so much as this is just a glorified, bare bones release of three games with some higher resolutions, it is actually poorly designed in terms of the camera and controls across each of the games. Yes, they haven't aged perfectly but the slippery jump inputs and wonky camera issues of the past have made this incredibly difficult to just pick and play. Furthermore, the removal of inverted camera controls being left out of Sunshine makes aiming with FLUDD awkward, and as a big fan of that title, I feel very unhappy that I'll most likely not ever finish that game. I wish I could return it but I unfortunately purchased it on the eshop.
But I guess with past ports, re-releases and even the graphical and gameplay atrocity that is Pokemon Sword and Shield, the company is getting too comfortable in it's laurels again. Coming from a banner year like 2017 with Odyssey and respectable adjacent years, this is a depressing sign that the company is moving shakily into bad territory again as it did with the Wii U. It's heavy reliance to re-market past games with minimal upgrades is only good for other companies who do proper ports or remasters, such as the recent Crash Bandicoot collection. It saddens me, someone who has defended and loved Mario and friends for decades to see the hallmark of Nintendo quality and care fading quickly.
I fear the culture of the company is, for better or worse, becoming more intent on profit and less on the overall finished product. Though I can acknowledge the pandemic probably caused issues in the development of 3D All Stars, this hastened urge to release it in time for the 35th Anniversary is not so much lazy as it is depressing.
ok after playing it, I think the most people who don't get it will not loose anything essencial
Still don't see the issue, buy the game if you want it, if you don't then don't. If you haven't bought it by the time its pulled, you either didn't want it that badly or you had other priorities. Realistically, if you have spare cash to buy games you could put £2 or $2 away per week and have enough to purchase it before it is pulled.
It’s an extremely lazy port. The games inside are great but they deserved better. Does anyone know what Grezzo are working on at the minute?
It’s a lazy port but I’m having fun and that’s the main thing.
Wahoooooo
Regardless whether this is a lazy port or not, it is a terrible idea to have a 6 month window to buy a game. Maybe for a physical copy but not for digital. There is no copyright issues here, because Nintendo owns Mario. It’s pure greed to pressure gamers to buy the game now, otherwise they miss out. I hope this is not how it will be from now on.
@Morph
If you can't put away 2$ a week, buying 25 yeard old roms might not be your biggest problem.
@Savino,
Personal opinions at the end of the day.
@Marios-love-child By disturbing things, yeah. Your games, your things, are meant to derive their 'special-ness' through your own personal experiences with them.
You deriving extra special-ness through an artificially depriving of others of the chance to have the same as you, is disturbing.
@johnvboy I'd be OK with lazy rom drops that left the original graphics untouched and unspoiled, if they were priced appropriately. £50 is remake territory.
If this collection did one thing wrong, it probably wouldn't have had the amount of backlash it had. Problem is it did three things wrong. It's a low effort job, charging full price, and with a nonsensical limited release window.
@nessisonett,
In all fairness a lot of people complained about the "Zelda twilight princess" remaster, so not sure Grezzo would be an answer.
Calling it, it'll be a Nintendo Selects in 3 years.
@nessisonett I'd put my money on a Skyward Sword remaster
@Savino
Of course they do. It’s by far the cheapest way to legitimately get access to these games.
@6ch6ris6
“Courage?” 😂
Mate, it’s a Video Game. A few people on Sites like this might be upset but out in the real world there are millions of people who see this as really good value and this thing will be selling very well indeed.
@Morph "If you haven't bought it by the time its pulled, you either didn't want it that badly or you had other priorities."
Good thing we're not experiencing a recession or mass unemployment due to a pandemic, where normally financially stable people may find themselves in financially tough times, and may have to priortise other things over video games, especially over the next six months.
@brunojenso
Spot on. The willingness to work for, and endlessly acquire, products we don’t actually need and are merely for entertainment is not one of the traits that makes Mankind in any way superior.
P.S. We actually confuse ourselves by misguided use of that empathy. We anthropomorphise Companies. You can see people posting that somehow feel like a Friend has wronged them. They’re a business, they only exist to make money. It’s better if we remember that and think of decisions on buying products as a potential business transaction.
Well let's see...
A broken game that needs continuous updates to fix bugs which were NEVER present on the Wii versions. And since it's a limited release this collection will be full of bugs long after Nintendo has shut down Switch online support while the superior Wii versions will always play perfectly.
Charging $60 for an SD card with 3 emulated games that can be emulated for free and run better on other Nintendo systems.
That is how you're celebrating Mario's 35th? Worst party EVAR
@JamesR
Ichi-go iche-e ("one time, one meeting"), treasuring the unrepeatable nature of a moment.
Thanks for that. Didn't know that phrase and you can see events like these created by Nintendo through its history.
I think FOMO plus the desire for creating moments like those and the ability to leverage that to make money is still a problem. Particularly with software and video games. Not to mention the scourge of scalping that cynically cheapens the entire experience Nintendo may be going for here.
@Tibob roms are supposed to be free so you shouldn't be paying a cent for them. If you are, you probably have bigger problems than playing roms
@Medic_Alert I noticed Sunshine had a blurry and weirdly wavey horizon. This is extremely distracting.
How come I haven't seen any other comments on this, especially in reviews.
At least we can guess what we get for zeldas 35'th next year.
Zelda 35th Collection with Ocarian of Time, Wind Waker and Skyward Sword ;p
Or maybe OOT, WW and Twighlight Princess with Skywar Sword being a 60bucks standalone title ;P
But if they follow the mario 3d collection way - they will not give us twighlight princess, which i hated anyways, because it was basically the second gamecube release and like mario galaxy 2, they only add the very first game appearing on that platform exclusively. yes twighlight was also on wii, but for me, it is still a gamecube game ;P
i bet we will get the same treatment like with the mario 35th
@Richnj I would have thought Nintendo would have lowered the price to adjust for this.
If it was $10-20 less I bet everyone wouldn't complain as much.
This anniversary collection is missing behind the scenes videos and unlockable artwork, etc
@Guitario You mean the heat effect? The thing that's supposed to be there, and exists in real life?
@Papichulo What do you mean by "roms are supposed to be free"? Last I knew, at least Nintendo disagrees. Depending on where you are, the ability to back up software may be protected by law, however, Nintendo would argue on a few levels, including that the onus is on the player to do the backing up — not just go to a site and download them. This also requires an original purchase.
People have different takes on it, philosophically and practically. But since the roms are copies of software from a group of people that created it with the intent to sell it to people for money in an exchange for their work, it certainly depends on perspective whether people are "supposed to" acquire them for free.
People can certainly get away with it easily enough and may create a line in their head about when a game is "ready" to just acquire freely against the wishes of the company that made it. They might even erase the line completely and just grab anything that is available, too.
I'm not saying Nintendo should not do more to preserve its games and make them available to play and probably at a low cost as they become more history than product. Most game publishers and studios could handle it all much better. Roms are just copies of software though, and the line between pirating a brand new game and emulating an old rom is very different for people and laws around the world.
@Savino,
Sure are, I like these games.
Right, this is to celebrate the 35th Anniversary of Mario so it it is a limited release during the 35th year.
If the game was still widely available for every year after then it would be pointless. I don't understand how people can't see this.
All three games will absolutely be avaialble as separate purchases after March 21 it is simply this collection that is limited.
@TheFullAndy People can't see this, because it has not been stated by Nintendo. You are just speculating. It's very likely and intelligent speculation, but the fact that Nintendo has not revealed this part of the plan means the artificial pressure to buy and the scalping are just as real as if they never intended to release them separately in the future.
I bought it, I'm excited about it, I just think that there is a valid discussion to be had here about that aspect.
@Guitario,
It was there in the original game, and I also remember a point where Mario had a pair of sunglasses on to combat the glare.
@aaronsullivan,
I know Nintendo have not stated anything about individual releases of these games on the e-Shop, but it would be very surprising if they did not.
One of my main gripes is the price, along with the limited release
£50 for 3 old games that were lazily ported, even unofficial emulators made by people in their basements do a better job
@Richnj Didn't cry 20 years ago, and won't now. It's just a game.
@aaronsullivan my argument for that has always been that while yes, nintendo made these games, they already made their initial sales years ago
For example my parents bought me SM64 when I was a kid, still got my copy, and the people who worked on the game got paid for their work... now if I want to play sm64 on my pc instead of on my n64 I feel justified in that
Hell, at some point the people who worked on these games wont even be alive.. how many people who worked on original super mario bros, still work at nintendo? Which ones of them are still alive? Yet people think it's fine to constantly resell software even dating as far back as the 80s
From a legal stand point yes nintendo can do what they want.. from a morals stand point I see nothing wrong with downloading roms of old games, as long as you support a company you like where you can
It’d only be a problem if I wanted it and couldn’t get it. In this case, I want it and I got it, so Nintendo can do what they want now.
@locky-mavo that's kind of the point, people who might want it but cant get it are going to be disappointed
It's especially going to be the case, given a lot of people will be struggling financially due to covid
Since it is selling many physical copies, maybe used copies won’t be that rare after it is off the shelf.
@Doktor-Mandrake unofficial emulators made by "people in their basements" over decades of time building on each other's work and which make many tradeoffs and, for instance, expect their users to put up with completely broken sections and glitches to achieve higher frame rates. Plus, they don't have to work within the hardware limits of a Switch.
I'm not saying the price is right, or it could not have been better, but acting like it was some easy task for some people to create emulators is insulting to the people who have worked hard at them for so long and painting the results as clearly better is disingenuous, because there are many advantages slapping a cartridge into a device and playing anywhere, without any configuration, gives you.
@aaronsullivan I agree.
But I think there's a huge disconnect between Nintendo's intentions and how some of us westerners view their actions. Take Super Mario Bros. 35 - they are inviting us to celebrate Mario's 35th with a unique, time-limited game. Ichi-go, Ichi-e.
Meanwhile in the West: "Why is this time-limited? Why can't we carry to the Switch 2? Are you seriously saying it will stop working? What about video-games preservation? etc..."
Nintendo fans: "Why won't Nintendo release their classic games!"
Also Nintendo fans: "Why is Nintendo releasing their classic games!"
I was fine with most of the controversy surrounding the release (even the graphics), but did anyone else notice they switched the controls for Super Mario Sunshine? Even the ones when you use the game cube controller....
@Richnj
What a very strange point of view you have.
Your use of the word "deprive" is almost suggesting that I've bought the game simply to stop someone else having it. That couldnt be further from the truth. I bought it because I'm a massive fan of the games and have wished for a re-release like this for many many years.
If the fact I've managed to secure a copy and it feels special to me because it was something I really wanted some how disturbs you then you obviously must be a very sad individual.
One that I'd rather not waste anymore of my day replying too so let's just agree to disagree
@Medic_Alert @Guitario The heat distortion effect is intentional and in the original game. It was an impressive effect for its time, but maybe feels a bit overblown now.
If you have never seen heat distortion, however, it might be time to put the controller down and go outside.
Edit: they are talking about blur over far objects, not heat distortion...
@JamesR Haha. Fair enough.
@aaronsullivan oh I never intended to say it was easy, just that it was entirely possible for nintendo to do a better job of it imo
The price by far is my biggest gripe, sure prices can be subjective but £50 notes seems way too much
@Buckyooliver i agree! theres so many other things to waste your brain on than this ridiculous subject matter. If you want it buy it! If not then............ Dont!
Being someone who was deep in the trenches of the amiibo craze of 2015 and the hunt for the mini NES and SNES, it scares me to see Nintendo dabbling in limited releases for their physical games now. Especially for something like a pretty-standard HD collection of older games, something that other companies just throw out there pretty regularly (especially during the PS3/360 era).
@aaronsullivan
If we set aside the games being sold afterwards, because that is actually not really the issue, this is a limited time collection for a one time event. Makes perfect sense to me.
@Richnj like I said you either don't want it or you have other priorities I though that bit was fairly clear. One game between now and the end of March would be doable in most cases but if a person absolutely can't afford it then unfortunately they will miss out but maybe they can pick up at a later date or perhaps Nintendo will do a re-release, who knows?
The video game world is, has been and always will be full of limited editions, limited time releases, special offers, limited time add on content etc.
Why all of a sudden its a big deal with this release is beyond me. The current situation doesn't appear to have affected the likes of Animal Crossing or Ring Fit too badly.
By the way, regarding time limits, I'm still angry that I can no longer get hold of a new, official AC/DC T-shirt from their 1978 Powerage world tour.
I appreciate that this was before I was born, but still.
@Doktor-Mandrake I understand that perspective. I take a mostly similar stance. It's different than roms are supposed to be free, though, right?
It's also hard to imagine companies giving away something that consumers show, over and over again, they are willing to pay for. Exactly what they are selling becomes an interesting question: is it convenience, is it part of reclaiming the subsidized hardware costs, is it new modes of play or the work of updating it to work with modern hardware?
It is, of course, simpler than that: It's selling something consumers will pay for.
I honestly think it's time for Nintendo to create two sites/services:
Nintendo Museum
Free roms and official emulators for computers. Nintendo will make money on this by selling the original controllers (supported with official drivers)
Nintendo Fan Creations
A safe harbor for fan games, where hobby developers can release actual games with Nintendo IP featured prominently. Nintendo makes money by directing people to the official games.
@TheFullAndy Oh, I misread. Sorry!
@ryobi85 I mean if that's how you feel fair enough
But why waste your own time to tell other people they are wasting their time?
@status-204 How would it dilute their IPs? Curious. Those fan stories and games go out on their own already. Harboring them at a site where Nintendo can clearly label them as unofficial yet also giving a place for fans to show their super fandom and keep people invested in franchises that Nintendo only visits once every 5 to 6 years seems mostly win-win to me.
I assume you are not talking about the Museum idea at all. That would dilute nothing. Emulation is already widespread. This would just give a way for people to play the older games, make some money on controllers, and redirect people towards Nintendo hardware who have left it behind.
@Medic_Alert Ah, that was mostly a Wii era thing, I thought. It helped diminish the jaggies in the backgrounds and gave a bit of that tilt-shift look. Really notable in Skyward Sword, too. Hmm, I'll have to take a look at that again.
@aaronsullivan
Nothing to apologise for bud!
Imagine getting 3 clasic games for the price of one and having internet crybabies soil their trousers 🤷🏾♂️.
Once again to be fair: The "limitied availability" is rather absurd.
I picked up 2 copies of Super Mario 3D All Stars and will remain factory sealed as I also downloaded a digital copy to actually play it.
Pretty sure that's because there's plans to add N64 and eventually newer consoles to the Nintendo Switch Online service.
So a hypothetical kid in Sept 2021 will just buy a Switch and subscribe to NSO.
Really though, even if it's just marketing, I have nothing against it. I don't have time to play all the games to death as is. There's plenty of stuff in life that happens just once. It's sad that you only get one high school graduation or something, but that's just how it is. Super Mario 35 could be one of those experiences, and we'll reminisce about it sitting by the fireplace when we're old, playing Super Mario Cyberpunk or something.
@TheFullAndy Yeah, I think there are still issues with limited time releases. I mean, you can watch the video, read the comments for those.
Scalping, taking advantage of FOMO and pressuring gamers, and ultimately making it difficult for people to experience these games if they find out too late or don't have the means to buy it right away. It's an artificial scarcity thing all in the name of "celebration".
Doesn't effect me directly, and I guess you, but I can see why it's a trend fans do not want continued. Physical stuff I understand much better because of economies of scale. I mean... it is digital software that has no reason to be pulled away from availability online, right?
Yeah it doesn't affect me, therefore I don't care.
@aaronsullivan
Think we will have to agree to disagree on this one.
This is a release to mark a special occaision and if it wasn't a limited release then it wouldn't be special.
I think if the games are not released after as separate purchases then people can rightfully complain about being denied but this collection means something because it is a one time thing.
I would like Jaws to be shown in the cinema til the end of time but it only occurs on big annivesaries, but I can still buy it on bluray. That is how I see it.
@aaronsullivan something like a "fan creations" would be interesting, alot of fun rom hacks out there in the wild and in an official capacity like that would benefit nintendo as a company
@JamesR "By the way, regarding time limits, I'm still angry that I can no longer get hold of a new, official AC/DC T-shirt from their 1978 Powerage world tour.
I appreciate that this was before I was born, but still."
Google it. You'll be able to get a digital copy, 42 years later, and for free. Beats out £50 for six months by a long shot.
I didn’t buy it, not because I’m boycotting Nintendo but simply because I’m not interested in re-playing games that I bought and played years back. Sure, they are good games but it’s a very lacklustre release with nothing to entice me into purchasing those games ( again ).
I’d be far more excited for an all new Mario adventure
@status-204 I'm not sure what you mean "awful ideas" because fans have already made plenty of AMAZING custom content over the years lol
Considering how the pandemic has affected Nintendo, we could just as easily have nothing from them right now. Instead, I have not one, but three great games. I've been playing all three non-stop since I got it and haven't noticed any real issues. The really good news is now there are official N64, GameCube and Wii emulators for Switch. I would guess those will be used for more than a limited collection. All three games in the collection and many more could be planned for NSO in the future.
It's a SKU created to celebrate Mario's 35th anniversary.
Nintendo likes to end their celebrations, not keep it around forever, so it makes sense to discontinue the physical and digital version of the collection for consistency sake when it's time.
The games will probably come back in separate SKU's but the compilation will not, and making up hypothetical situations about who won't get to play the COLLECTION after March is kinda funny to me.
Not sure why you folks can't except things being limited.
@Marios-love-child No, I didn't say you bought it to deprive others. It's technically Nintendo who is doing the depriving. The disturbing part is where you assigned more importance to your object because others couldn't get it.
We can disagree, and agree to disagree, but personal insults don't normally come under that category.
@TheFullAndy Your Jaws example seems to support the problems, though. I can buy/stream Jaws digitally right now in a number of places, even though I can't see it in theaters. The All Stars limited release is not promised to be digital later, in fact it will be removed from the store.
Maybe if digital games were just less consumer-hostile. If Nintendo provided a way for people to trade games, let people borrow them for a limited time, offered some assurances that a game would have a way to be played in the future, it would be less of a problem.
¯\(ツ)/¯
I'm really surprised why people are confused on this one. Nintendo is a very Japanese company and this is an example of:
(Japanese concept of 一期一会, Ichi-go Ichi-e)
@JamesR Thank you for the cultural (and Buddhist) reference. A six month period and retail don't meld well with the concept, mind you, but I do understand. As @aaronsullivan says, applying this to a retail commodity rather creates the mighty "FOMO", and an artificially short window is no tea gathering. Please note that the spirit and concept of "ichi-go ichi-e" would be lost on young children sitting down to play a video game, let alone Mario, yelping with pain and chagrin as his buttocks are set aflame following a missed jump into lava.
@Northwind JamesR and aaronsullivan, at least, have made excellent contributions to the discussion.
Bad Business: Releasing a retro game collection available for a limited time.
Good Business: Having the XBOX Game Pass throttle the eShop.
Oh NintendoLife.
@Savino,
I had forgot how good Galaxy was, can't imagine it looking any better as well, but the initial vanilla running through to town, then to the 360 planet section is pure genius.
@aaronsullivan
The games will be available as separate purchases, it hasn't been confirmed but will 100% be the case (maybe Mario 64 will be on N64 online). Only thing people will not get after 31st March 21 is the games in a collection.
@LivingLeif agree on all points. Nintendo dropped the ball with this one. I only got this because of the limited release and was going to preorder the Zelda game instead.
Nintendo’s belief is to delay and not release a game that is not ready... why change that philosophy now?
@Salvince not the norm but Nintendo isn’t the only one especially during the pandemic.
@6ch6ris6 I got Mario 3D all stars for about $35, if not for that I wouldn't have got it. There is a long list of games I waited for a deep sale on or still have not got because I think they are overpriced or the quality doesn't hold up. Mr Shifty and Outer Worlds, because of performance issues, lots of 1st party ports and almost all Capcom games because of price. I think a lot of people vote with their wallets.
I can't stand his lack of eye contact in this video.
@TheFullAndy It's likely they will be released digitally and separately in some way. But we were putting that aside.
Still, it's not something Nintendo is promising or even hinting at, and they are completely within their own power to share this plan but they don't.
And there is the question of when these games could be available again? While I think it's likely that Mario 64 will get a digital release along with other N64 games in 2021, I'm not so confident about the others, and I wouldn't make a bet that even Mario 64 would appear in March.
Anyway, I'm not trying to argue, here. Just trying lay it out why it matters to many people. I really shrugged it off, initially. I still think 6 months is a pretty reasonable time span for a limited release. I get the celebration idea. But I also see why it is upsetting to some, especially with from the digital angle. It begins to feel arbitrary.
I get that Nintendo doesn't share their plans, but if they are going to try and create a unique, limited moment, it would be nice if they were candid about what exactly is unique about the moment. Is it the package? Is it the physical release? Is it the music collection?
@KasperDG Haha. Remember, for him, it's camera lens contact. I'm used to it now, but it sure is weird. All that said, and I just checked, he is making "eye contact" all the time, so now I'm not sure what you are referencing.
I think this is evidence that a Switch Pro is coming out soon. This “limited release” could be a tactic to get customers to buy up the remaining stock of switches instead of waiting for the updated console to come out.
I eventually will buy the collection, because I love this games.
But, I have access to the originals in the native hardware.
I think it’s still the best way to experience this titles.
The analog buttons on GameCube, The pointer on Wiimote, etc.
But, for the people that never experience this games, it’s really a must buy.
@HobbitGamer I haven't played the original in a long time but if it's the same effect as the original, then it only worked on a CRT.
It doesn't come across as a heat ripple effect, at least not to me.
The limited release for digital games is bullcrap. The emulation itself is the best they've done for N64/Gamecube officially, but people need to stop complaining so much since they clearly can do a much better job /s
I can sort of understand for physical, but when I heard digital was limited that really surprised me
@aaronsullivan I didn't say anything about pirating new games. I was talking about roms as they exist in their purest form, which is a piece of information that needs an emulator or modded hardware to run. Doesn't matter who made it or what they think, old roms are floating out there freely on the internet to use, but not distribute for profit. Most of the best games in Nintendo's library would be unplayable if not for emulation, and hackers are emulating Nintendo's games better than Nintendo themselves.
Where do you think Nintendo got the idea for Mario Maker? Ever been to www.smwcentral.net ? Haven't you ever played Captain Toad on the SNES? Some guy sitting in a basement somewhere in Brazil or Europe has already made Mario Worlds that are infinitely more interesting and interactive than anything Nintendo ever did by using oldass Windows based freeware.
Amazon gave me back $10.94 and I saw another comment that someone made saying the same thing happened for them
I hope the Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Anniversary Edition gets rereleased next year for the 35th anniversary. I only owned a DS and DS Lite the last two times. No DSi or 3DS for me back then.
@Mallen001 Only $10.85 here, lol.
But I also got that Amazon refund yesterday.
as i see it this game is getting way to much hate from entitled gamers over a few small issues that can easily be fixed not every game is going to be perfect i would understand if the game is crashing nonstop or have game breaking glitches but super mario 3d all stars doesnt have that.
I disagree with the limited release, but I'm buying it next month anyway and I feel $60 is well worth it. Not really that bad in my eyes.
Create some urgency for 6 months than release the 3 games separately digitally for more than 1/3 each. Nintendo gets more money this way from rushed sales and more expensive digital one offs.
after the limited time you will be able to buy this game on ebay for 500 bucks
@Zeldafan79 dude Nintendo will release galaxy 2 next year as a stand alone title. Business wise they made the right choice not including it.
Lots of money will be made when they release it for switch.
@Poor_Evinrude not really. The games will be sold individually after 3D all stars is removed from digital store. Does anyone really believe these games will disappear?
@Northwind Hey, you take that back! (Walking towards you while rolling up sleeves)
No, it literally is very good for business. You guys are terrible with those analysis as always. Being a good thing for business isn't the same as being for the consumer. If you're going to analyze it from the viewpoint of Nintendo as a company, it's a pretty good decision. If by the consumer, no it isn't. But that's not what the author of this article did.
@AtlanteanMan You don't know what you're talking about, even more with how huge the demand of Switch is on every market.
Hyrule Warriors 2 is literally their game for the Holidays. 3D All Stars launched on September and it's just limited because of it being from the anniversary, much like the 3D All Stars on Wii was for the 25th.
@Nemesis666 Hyrule Warriors is a third-party game (albeit a big one that just happens to be tied to one of Nintendo's two biggest IPs). Historically no console maker has ever allowed the holiday season to slip by without at least one major first-party, in-house release. As for the anniversary being the sole or even primary motive behind Nintendo releasing the 3D All-Stars compilation, you can feel free to believe what you will.
I'm not denying the current demand for the Switch or that it kind of occupies its own niche separate from Sony and Microsoft's boxes, but having followed the industry since the Atari 2600 I can tell you that consumers are fickle and their attention spans short, especially when the next "biggest and best ever fill-in-the-blank" goes up for sale. Maybe the Switch will continue to thrive being "everyone's second console" the same way the Wii was in its day, but the signs are already mounting (look no further than so many Wii U ports, another telltale sign of quick and less resource-intensive gap-filling by a publisher) that Nintendo is already prepping their next system. Their real effort is being routed elsewhere at the moment; that should be easily apparent.
It is always bad when something is released with an artificial shortage. It wasn't fun when they did it on the Gamecube with the Zelda collection, nor was it fun with the Wii games that were limited (especially Xenoblade Chronicles which was limited to better profit Gamestop). It is silly to have these games go away as a collection.
However, I think it is more likely that we will see these games sold individually afterwards at $30-40 a piece. Because people will pay the price to have them.
Does no one remember when they slapped the original Mario All Stars on a Wii disc and called it a day? 3D All Stars isn't all it could've been, but that's more typical of Nintendo than not. You know what you're getting into: buy it, or don't. Anything else is just sour grapes.
All of these games are free on PC. Emulation has saved game preservation.
I’m not really too worried about this as the original games are what matters, not Nintendo’s poor emulation.
Mmm, I don't have a problem with it tbh. I can play these classics on switch now. They don't play any worse than the originals and we have months to make a purchase for an insignificant milestone...
Id rather this than them take resources away from NEW games
Great video. As much as it pains me to say it, this feels like just another anti-consumer move by Nintendo. The Animal Crossing one island per Switch console was outrageous. In addition to my Switch and my copy of Animal Crossing, I also bought each of my two girls a Switch Lite and their own copy of the game. Only to find out that they far preferred playing Roblox on an iPad.
@kobashi100 well I don’t think anyone thinks the games are going anywhere. I’m just saying this could be a tactic to clear out Switch stock in preparation for the Switch Pro.
@AtlanteanMan No, it's not a third party game, at least on our region. It's being released by Nintendo outside of Japan as part of the deal of licensing the IP (as they get more money), plus the fact that the Zelda team is working alongside KT to release it on story, graphics, etc. Plus, your insistence on "in-house" is also bizarre when Nintendo games are mostly developed by contractors, with Nintendo SPD/EAD in the past producing them and since 2015 after the merger, Nintendo EPD producing it with 3 of its departments focused on production of external developed titles. At this point I recommend you to give a read to this thread: https://www.resetera.com/threads/nintendo-first-party-thread-ot3-internal-x-external-x-publishing-whats-cooking.116419/
And your argument of Wii U ports is wrong. Not only because Nintendo released more than 20 new games into the system but Wii U ports are games developed and with added content to fill up the gaps on what wouldn't have anything on the month, plus giving time to the development team as a side project. 3D World port? It's a side project of Nintendo EPD Tokyo with them working on the new content (and they work on a new 3D Mario), while NST work on the port and implementation of the online. Those ports aren't getting resources from new games, they are being used to give time to the team and to also give content where otherwise a gap would be there, so while a new 3D Mario is being developed, 3D World is coming to not have this team not releasing anything in that period of 3-4 years of development.
@georgesdandre Haven't we all discussed this till we were blue in the face already?
...and yet here you are, discussing it again.
@Losermagnet You know what you're getting into: buy it, or don't. Anything else is just sour grapes.
You don't think consumers should voice their opinion?
@NookMiler Create some urgency for 6 months than release the 3 games separately digitally for more than 1/3 each. Nintendo gets more money this way from rushed sales and more expensive digital one offs.
That's not going to happen and pretending that it is just excusing Nintendo for the timed release. When they re-released Super Mario All Stars (Wii 25th Anniversary) they didn't raise the price. In fact, I think it went from $50 down to $20.
There is no Galaxy 2 unlock, there is no 4k Switch and they aren't going to re-release these games separately and for more expensive. Just stop making up silly scenarios in your head, it's embarrassing. Just call Nintendo out for this nonsense like they deserve. The don't deserve the benefit of the doubt and the doubt was created by people like you making up silly scenarios.
I pre-ordered from Amazon..... still haven't received it. I will probably go back to buying new games at Target.
@Crono1973 My problem is with people accusing Nintendo of acting the way they always have, and reacting like they've been deceived somehow. Nintendo is a company and they're not above doing the same crummy things all other companies do. The consumer can complain all they want, but as soon as somethings changed there'll just be something new to complain about. Fact of the matter is we got some great Super Mario games on the Switch, during a horrible year for mankind, and I'm genuinely bummed that people are more invested in airing grievances than they are in playing some cool video games.
@Losermagnet I'm genuinely bummed that people are more invested in airing grievances than they are in playing some cool video games.
Why can't we do both. I can collect 120 Stars and also complain that this limited release is BS.
@Crono1973 Fair enough. But wouldn't you rather share your experiences with the game(s) then get keyed up about something you can't control?
@Losermagnet Fair enough. But wouldn't you rather share your experiences with the game(s) then get keyed up about something you can't control?
I can do both.
I love to tackle the Stars in Mario 64 out of order. This is a strength that Mario 64 has over it's successors. So I generally get 'Behind the Chain Chomp's Gate' first instead of fighting the Big Bob-omb. Then I go get the two stars on the Princess Slide and then I get the Secret Star in the Aquarium. After that it's straight to the 2 slide levels in Cool Cool Mountain.
However, a limited digital release only hurts consumers. It does help scalpers though. Nintendo makes good games but sometimes they make anti-consumer business decisions.
I love the concept, 6 months is plenty of time for a $60 purchase
@Marios-love-child except after the initial rush. PS5 will be widely available, so only people who are desperate will pay to scalpers while reasonable people can wait to get it.
With Mario, anyone interested with this game or switch after March 31st will have no option other to buy from scalpers or pirate it.
I am personally boycotting this practice and I will not buy the 35th Anniversary Collection for this reason. I refuse to support this practice. I love Super Mario 64, but I will not support Nintendo's greed. I hope more people boycot this game as I have to show that we won't stand for this practice.
Dunkey said it best; Nintendo is great at making games, but terrible at running a company.
@Willsy This isn't about how you can get the game. The problem is that if someone gets a Switch after March then they will never be able to play these games. It's bad and greedy business.
@LivingLeif PREACH!!!
@B_Lindz
I honestly don't understand the thought process. I want a copy of I am Setsuna, I can't find it anywhere in Aus and was unaware of the game until it was too late. How is this different? Is there a length of time of availability that every gamer has agreed on?
We don't know the print run on smbas, nor do we know if it'll get a re-release, nor do we know if they'll extend digital downloads. Everyone that has posted here can get it now... Speculating the future is pointless hence why I don't understand what the "drama" is
It might seem cool to be a communist/socialist, but this whole industry wouldn't exist without markets and capitalism.
@Marios-love-child Congrats on your special feelings.
@GrimbleGromble
Aww thank you so much for your kind words
@MichaelHarvey Not sure how you know this?
I was really excited by this announcement at first but the high price and limited availability have turned me off a bit. To the point where now I'm just not that bothered. Plenty other games to get.
It's good to see that Nintendo Life are still prepared to call out Nintendo when necessary and maintain their own integrity.
It felt like they were towing the corporate line a bit too much during the run up to the games release. Great video!
@Doktor-Mandrake well thats ten seconds of my time i wont get back! 😂😂Just enjoy these gems guys!
@ryobi85 perhaps stop wasting your time then, the whole point of a comments section is to comment genius
Finally! An article for me to vent all my rage at the world upon!... It's a bizarre decision. I mean sure I guess there could be reasons why they're releasing 3D All-Stars like this, but why? I mean this seems like an evergreen package and sure Nintendo has done this in the past... Zelda Collection (GCN), Mario All-Stars (Wii), Metroid Prime Trilogy (Wii). But, like in an age where older games are getting harder by the day to maintain, collections like these help preserve these games for a newer generation. Maybe Nintendo plans to release these individually on the eShop after March, or start an N64 Online Service (I mean they have the emulator so...). But, what a bizarre, bizarre decision.
Physical is always limited to how many are produced, initially or for however long they keep making and selling. Limiting digital releases in any way is insane. Nintendo's announcement as such for both are bull crap and further connect them to scumbag resellers. Do they really think they won't sell as much if they release their products like normal?
@Northwind Jokes on you, your comment is second.
@Willsy I am Setsuna isn't bad, but Lost Sphear is slightly better. I suggest that, it's probably still available, too.
These games will either become separate releases (along with Galaxy 2) or become part of a more expensive Nintendo Online service. In the meantime Nintendo gets to have it both ways with manufactured scarcity.
@brunojenso ...er that's yourself that wants to think this way, nobody else is like that..the heck man.
@StefanN go to twitter where they leaked out what made this game horrible lol, than you'll understand what i mean or heck even search it up on youtube. but yes just because it is homebrewed it was still done by a group of people who made it happen to be on homebrew, they did a job, while nintendo just grabs the effort those people did and use it to gain profit. that's what was scummy move.
@Doktor-Mandrake thanks for the advice dorkdrake 👍
@MidnightLaces Apparently i didn't misunderstand you, seeing that you're repeating what you said. But they didn't take anything from anyone. What you apparently mean is they took the >idea< to port it from somebody else. Which is also false, seeing the development on this collection started before the homebrew port. Try to step away from your anger for this, because i'm not trying to discredit your feelings or defend what you seem to think i'm trying to defend.
@ryobi85 an adult with a child like response, arent you cute
@MidnightLaces Looking at the replies and likes - It seems people do thank goodness - but even if they didn't that's kind of the point - I was opposing the normal, but maybe not great view people have of animals. Anyway no problem - I was just picking up on a small thing in your comment that gave me food for thought – but it was a really little thing - I didn't mean it as an attack on you and it was just something that got me pondering. Your comment was fine.
Yeah limited release, no galaxy 2, heartbroken... but holy crap as a person who has never gotten to play 64 before, not only have I gotten to re-experience my childhood in HD, but I also am finally able to play 64 and it's soooo good
