It's Media Create Japanese charts time once again, and this week includes a few new releases competing for top spot, including one from Nintendo and Good-Feel.
In the software chart it's Gravity Rush 2 on PS4 that leads the way; Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World on the 3DS made its debut in second place. Its sales number of 39,555 is an improvement on the launch of the Wii U original, which managed 31,158 units in Japan when it launch back in 2015. It's not a bad launch for the portable version, as such, but nevertheless the opening sales aren't exactly mind-blowing. We've enjoyed our time with it so far and rather wish it had started much stronger on its Japanese launch; results are below with lifetime sales in brackets.
- [PS4] Gravity Rush 2 (SIE, 01/19/17) – 74,361 (New)
- [3DS] Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World (Nintendo, 01/19/17) – 39,555 (New)
- [PS4] Valkyria Revolution (Sega, 01/19/17) – 38,197 (New)
- [PS4] Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8: Final Chapter Prologue (Square Enix, 01/12/17) – 22,758 (160,555)
- [3DS] Pokemon Sun / Pokemon Moon (Nintendo, 11/18/16) – 21,036 (3,092,277)
- [3DS] Yo-kai Watch 3: Sukiyaki (Level-5, 12/15/16) – 20,831 (629,229)
- [PSV] Valkyria Revolution (Sega, 01/19/17) – 18,219 (New)
- [PSV] Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony (Spike Chunsoft, 01/12/17) – 15,943 (92,110)
- [3DS] Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS (Nintendo, 12/01/16) – 14,285 (928,969)
- [3DS] Momotaro Dentetsu 2017: Tachiagare Nippon! (Nintendo, 12/22/16) – 8,638 (269,727)
- [PS4] Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony (Spike Chunsoft, 01/12/17) – 7,955 (47,961)
- [PS4] Grand Theft Auto V (Low Price Version) (10/08/15) – 7,456 (252,874)
- [PSV] Minecraft: PlayStation Vita Edition (SIE, 03/19/15) – 6,824 (1,090,208)
- [PS4] Final Fantasy XV (Limited and Bundled Editions Included) (Square Enix, 11/29/16) – 5,859 (923,632)
- [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Welcome Amiibo (Nintendo, 11/24/16) – 5,033 (112,797)
- [3DS] Miitopia (Nintendo, 12/08/16) – 4,775 (156,947)
- [PSV] Hana Oboro: Sengoku-den Ranki (Idea Factory, 01/19/17) – 4,522 (New)
- [Wii U] Minecraft: Wii U Edition (Mojang, 06/23/16) – 3,732 (279,716)
- [PS4] Battlefield 1 (EA, 10/21/16) – 3,432 (252,485)
- [PS4] Watch Dogs 2 (Ubisoft, 12/01/16) – 3,037 (105,648)
Moving on to hardware we see declines across the board, with the festive and early New Year bumps continuing to subside. The New 3DS LL (XL) is still in second place, while sadly the Wii U drops down below 1000 sales; results below have last week's figures in brackets.
- PlayStation 4 – 26,243 (39,116)
- New 3DS LL – 18,229 (23,212)
- PlayStation Vita – 11,521 (13,816)
- PlayStation 4 Pro – 7,133 (7,887)
- 2DS – 6,203 (9,243)
- New 3DS – 1,625 (2,091)
- Wii U – 794 (1,169)
- PlayStation 3 – 557 (701)
- Xbox One – 35 (75)
A decent if unremarkable week for Nintendo, we'd suggest; we'll see how Poochy and Yoshi's momentum holds up next week.

3ds port no one wanted dosent do well, wonder why
@kamikazilucas Lemme correct that.
3DS Port no one wanted does better than console version in launch week.
Obviously the market is there.
The Wii U version did most its sales(1.37 million as of March 31st 2016) in the west,
Regardless this is more than the Wii U version did.
If they did a generic, formulaic Yoshi-based monster collection based spin-off it would sell ALL the copies, because Japan.
@kamikazilucas
"No one wanted"
You think you speak for everyone? I really hate it when people say "the such and such no one wanted" as if they speak for every gamer on the planet. People want good games, no? Well, this is a good game.
In fact, if you were to attribute one thing speaking for all gamers, it'd be more accurate to say this is they Yoshis Island sequel we've always wanted.
The Wii U is officially dead!
I need cute games like Yoshi Wolly World 3DS also.
That can make my day better.
I don't care at all with ps4 sales.
Completely wasting my time and unhealthy for my body (Because I have to control my emotion when I saw things like that).
@BinaryFragger
Precisely. I like to see as many people get the opportunity to play a great game as possible. And +1 for trophies. I'm surprised they haven't implemented anything yet. We saw developers start implementing stamps on a game by game basis. Kinda figured they'd overhaul all that this time. Maybe they still will, who knows
Weak opening for Wooly World, but I doubt that's cause for concern given that it was probably cheap to scale back and port to the 3DS. Gravity Rush 2 deserves to see sales. Hopefully it doesn't drop off too quickly.
My kids and I are ready for February 3rd! We loved the Wii U version but to me portable versions of console games, whether they suffer a graphical downgrade or not, are the best if pulled off right. The Switch will be my primary home system in my room (gotta deem if it'll be worth the expenditure for an additional four units for each of my kids by Summer) but I don't see it not being taken places t with me even though my 3DS and Vita have a swath of games to keep me busy as is
And I'm here kinda disappointed that Valkyria Revolution isn't doing so hot.
The few unbiased (read: people judging it on it's own merits and not going in to whine about how it's not VC) impressions I read of the demo seemed to have it at about a 7/10.
Hopefully that keeps up and I have something for my Xbox this summer (yes, they're porting it for the Western release).
@Anti-Matter you have to control yourself when you see PS4 selling? Why?
@Mogster
Um... if I have to admit, I'm kind of hot-tempered people despite I usually calm and quirky. Considering I hate with every single things about ps4, whatever good news about ps4 just make me mad. So, I have to try to control my emotion whenever I realized those harsh truth.
Looks like the upcoming switch is even decimating the Bone sales. . I did see display stands of rXbone in Japan this December gone but the display space in the Stores can't be worth it. . . :/
wii U is definetly over
@BinaryFragger I'd really like an achievement system too. I think it keeps a player psychologically invested. If they want to be, of course.
@lemonjellydude it is, but by god look at those xbone numbers. 35! That's TERRIBLE. 965 less than the WiiU.
I think this has to be the Wii U's worst week yet?Not sure I've seen the XBone as low as that either.
@readyletsgo 759 actually
I give it 2 months and the Wii U will be in double figures.I wonder, at what point do they stop releasing sales numbers?
@kamikazilucas
There are 60 million+ 3DS owners and only 13 million or so Wii U owners. Thus, the vast majority of people who have a 3DS do not have a Wii U. The market is there for sure. Nintendo did not market the game too aggressively, but I think it will do well over the long term.
There it is. Wii U has gone <1,000 for the first time.
@OorWullie It is its worst week. And we still haven't reached rock bottom. It could be battling the XB1 for last place come March.
@Anti-Matter there's no reason to hate the PS4 at all. Maybe you need to take a step back from gaming if you get angry about it. Games are meant to be fun.
@kamikazilucas Let me correct that statement for you.
"A 3DS port I didn't want dosen't do well, I wonder why."
I'm expecting 1,000,00 sales week one in the US.
@JaxonH Couldn't agree more. Getting the JP version on Friday. Need more platformers on the 3DS.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I'm curious to see how a big a spike in sales in gets when BOTW releases.I'm sure there will be some who've been waiting to buy one just for that game.Saying that,I bet the Wii U is not that much cheaper than the Switch will be in Japan.
@CrazedCavalier
And I'm glad to see I'm not the only one excited for Valkyria Revolution. I love VC, and yes I hope to see another main entry some day, but that doesn't mean this can't be a good spinoff. In fact I've read there is indeed strategy involved in the boss fights. A different kind, sure, but it maintains firm roots in strategic gameplay despite being a more action-oriented entry.
Here's to hoping we see a western localization...
@OorWullie
People like that who salivate over negative news don't stop to think that:
1) Even Reggie admitted the Wii U is being phased out. They complained about Nintendo "abandoning" the Wii U, now they gloat and feign surprise when it stops selling.
2) With all the big Switch news and press conferences, is anyone surprised this is when the Wii U really drops off the charts altogether?
Yeah, I agree though that Zelda Breath of the Wild may bring a final boost in Wii U sales. I'm certainly getting the Wii U version as I'm honestly not sold on Switch, certainly not launch day.
@OorWullie I was thinking as well that it might see a spike for Zelda but then given the price of a Wii U in Japan, that most will still ignore it. I'll be interested to see how the game sells on both platforms. I think it'll be close.
It surprises me a bit that people feel it necessary to point out (as if in a mocking way) that Wii U sales are so low. The Switch has been revealed, its release is but weeks away and Nintendo has acknowledged they are producing no more software for it. Plus their last remaining title for it is also a Switch launch title. So the low sales are a Rep no-brainer.
Yet when the PS4 or N3DS / XL were announced / released, no one started pointing fingers at the drop of sales for both the PS3 and original 3DS models.
@readyletsgo true but Xbox one sales have been low in Japan for a long time but the wii u it's more of statement as its the first one it's dipped that low and clearly shows the platform is on its last legs . Very sad indeed but expected now that focus is on the switch
I still can't help being amazed at how 3DS is still selling steadily, despite having sold 60 million units already, and with Switch a mere month away. Just wow.
@OorWullie @lemonjellydude well, yeah. But still, 35 for one weeks sales is real bad. I know Microsoft have kinda given up on Japan though. Don't blame them tbh.
@LegendOfPokemon umm no crap since Zelda is the last Wii u game as Nintendo said that lol don't these people know how to read?
@JaxonH "I really hate it when people say "the such and such no one wanted" as if they speak for every gamer on the planet,"
People were saying the same thing here about Mario Maker on the 3ds. Look above, it's almost sold a million in Japan alone.
22.1 million 3DS's vs 3.3 million Wii U's in Japan. It's not really a surprise.
Given the disparity between 3DS and Wii U sales Nintendo might be well served by porting every Wii U game that the 3DS can handle over. Then port the others to the Switch. Easy money.
People talks about 4K in the West so much and Japanese could care less. They buy more the basic console than the Pro one. This is why if Switch is at least like the Xbox One basic model it will be just fine.
@JaxonH Uh...
http://www.siliconera.com/2016/12/14/valkyria-azure-revolution-headed-west-valkyria-revolution/
You're kinda late. I specifically even mentioned in my post how I'm glad they're porting it to Xbox One for the localization.
@CrazedCavalier
Oh I musta missed that. Just scanning comments and saw you mention being excited for it.
Well right on then.
@kamikazilucas
im glad that it's coming to the 3DS. it's a game that never gotten for Wii U, but now i have more options to get on what console, i wanted it on.
@Mega_Yarn_Poochy
Off-topic, but between your positivity and your adorable avatar, this Brawl In The Family strip is in order.
I bet the switch is going to sell a boat load in japan. Even with the negative stuff I feel a buzz for the system that was not felt for wii u. Sure it will take over the top spot for good. jk
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I'm not so sure about it being close. The Wii version Twilight Princess for example sold almost 5.5 million more than the Gamecube version. When we factor in that the Gamecube actually had a larger fanbase at the end of its lifespan compared to the Wii U I have a pretty good feeling that it won't even be close.
This isn't even factoring in yet that BoTW is the only piece of Nintendo software available on launch day for the Switch (so far).
