The Nintendo Switch isn't as powerful as the Xbox One or PS4, despite rumours many months that argued the opposite. This isn't actually that much of a shock when you consider that the Switch can be taken out of the house with you, while the PS4 is distinctly un-portable. It's a trade-off that had to happen, and given the visual quality of the games we've seen running on Switch so far, one that we're pretty comfortable with here at Nintendo Life.
However, it's always worth seeing how cross-platform games compare side-by-side, and one example we have already is Dragon Quest Heroes II, which has been confirmed for release on the Switch along with the first title in a special double-pack.
Dragon Quest Heroes II is already available on the PlayStation 4 in Japan, so we're able to draw comparisons between the two in screenshot form.
Here's the PS4 version:
...and here's the same scene on Switch:
Finally, here's a simple comparison which shows how the environments in the Switch version are comprised of less polygons (PS4 is the top section, Switch is the bottom):
None of the above should really come as a massive shock given that the Switch clearly isn't going to be as powerful as a full-blown home console, but the differences aren't earth-shattering if you ask us. In fact, if you take away the PS4 screenshot and assess the Switch one on its own, it's looking pretty decent for a console the size of a small tablet.
What are your thoughts on this comparison? Are you happy that the Switch is able to host such cross-platform titles, even with graphical changes? Or were you optimistically holding out for visual parity? Let us know by posting a comment.

To clarify, is this docked or undocked?
Not too bothered about this, it was expected and doesn't make a massive difference. Also bear in mind that they're fitting both games on one cartridge and it is pretty impressive.
It's going to be my Nintendo and indie tablet, I'm very happy about that!
Yeah another smear campain from Sony comparing the graphics of a handheld and a home console.
Keep going Sony. You almost completely destroyed the japanese industry already. You're about to reach your goal
@AlphaJaguar
This is a good question. The resolution looks decidedly lower on the Switch screenshot. Plus this is still in development for Switch, yeah? Still time for a spit and polish.
Edit: Okay, just looked it up and it's a Switch launch title in Japan. Plus the insert image in the screenshot shows what is presumably the player using a controller, meaning the console is probably docked.
More evidence that the PS4 was not really needed over the PS3.
I'm impressed the Switch is that close to the PS4 if I'm honest.
PS4 has been the worst evolution in a generation in the history of video games.
More hair, nicer light effects and a share button. That's it.
When I play NHL or metal gear v on PS3 and then on PS4 do I notice a difference? No.
Do I notice a difference if I purposely look for the graphical enhancements? Of course I do. Is the game any better on PS4? Not at all and it's more expensive.
SNES to N64/PsOne was a generational leap.
N64/PsOne to GameCube/PS2 was a Huge leap
GameCube/PS2 to Wii U/PS3 was a huge leap.
PS3 to PS4 was so subtle it is not worth the entry price at all.
The Switch however is offering something that gives you unrestricted access to every game you play throughout its lifespan. The fact it's. It running "cutting edge" graphics is irrelevant. The fact it looks amazing and it is running full home console video games whether your on a bus, on a plane, at college, at work is utterly astounding and worth every penny. The fact it looks raphically that close to PS4 and further from PS3 is amazing and a bonus
The real question is: how does it move? How about clipping, FPS at a distance and such? Pretty lights and polygons are something, but the general impression of the game actually playing is much more.
I can't even tell which is which.
Somebody know if this Dragon quests games will come to westerns regions ??
Just like @UK-Nintendo I can't see that much of a difference, honestly.
Which is what I've always prophetized - "as the consoles' power keep growing, we'll reach a point where graphics, unable to exceed reality itself, won't matter anymore, and therefore games will start mattering again and Nintendo will start coming out on top again, better than ever, and completely unrivaled."
You can easily see the difference but it was clear they exists since HW is very different.
That's why I believe one of the biggest error of Nintendo is to market Switch as a home console that can go handheld.
Switch is the best handheld on the planet and can also be attached to a tv.
It doesn't bother me whatsoever.As long as frame rates is good and it plays same I'm fine .Also developers have have been working on PS4/xbox for over 3 years+ now and The Switch well it's there first Game,so this will improve over time.
I really don't care?
Can I play it on the go? Yes? Well then it's sorted which version I prefer...
I can certainly see the difference when there are two pictures side by side but would I have noticed if I'd played the PS4 version before and then played the Switch version some time later? Probably not. I don't really pay that much attention to the visuals.
But will it have three hour updates like a PS4 game? I has to have me three hour updates otherwise no sell!
@Damo Is this game in English too? :/
I was not expecting the switch to come close to the ps4 visuals but I was way wrong. Its so close I can hardly tell the difference. What an amazing little piece of tec.
The mistake Nintendo are making are saying the Switch is a home console more then a handheld, which we all know is nonsense. Its a handheld with Wii U graphics even DF points out the graphics are dated if you look at the Switch as a console, but for a handheld its very good.
FEWER polygons.
@DESS-M-8 : This is precisely why I couldn't, for the life of me, understand the hype surrounding the PS4 and Xbox One, and the majority of the games have been ports from the get-go. Sure, there are more current-gen exclusives being released nowadays, but I strongly doubt that many of these games couldn't have been executed on last generation hardware.
At least the Wii, Wii U and now the Switch each had something unique to offer. PS4 and Xbox One simply offered more of the same, with superior specs and no backwards compatibility.
@Kosmo exactly my thoughts about any game hitting the Switch.
I can see a clear difference - some of that I think is more the short time they had porting to the Switch than underpowered. That being said I'm also happy with the trade off if they make it run smooth.
Not too bad, actually.
Lots of rationalization and sour graping flying around.
I for one am not exactly surprised or upset about this. I'll mainly be using the Switch as a handheld and this, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Mario Odyssey and more look drop dead gorgeous for portable titles.
As for people who'll mainly be using it as a console, well, I have to say that the graphical difference looks to be more negligible than with the Wii/PS3/360 and Wii U/PS4/XBO. Obviously we're going to have the Scorpion later this year, but still, 90% of us are buying the Switch for Nintendo games and we know those are going to look amazing on the device.
The real question is....when re we getting this awesome title!
Even with the graphical hit, it means that I'll be able to play these two games, because I don't own a PS4 nor plan to get one (I recently acquired an Xbox One S). I hope it comes to the West, and as the first one already arrived this hope is higher than in Dragon Quest X case, which I think won't cross the Pacific Ocean because of its MMORPG nature. About XI I don't really know, because at this point we don't know what kind of game will be.
It doesn't matter based on what's been shown, what is more pressing is the FPS performance (talking frame drops rather than 30 v 60 etc) and number of enemies etc. It's a busy game and it will be interesting to see if the Switch can keep up where it matters: where it directly affects gameplay.
I'm not worried; if they've made consessions, I'm sure they'll be slight and I'm happy for effects to be toned down for the sake of stable FPS.
@arnoldlayne83 Yes but their marketing concern is that they need to sell it at the price of a home console (handheld consoles never launched over 250€ in the past, and it seems that marketing studies show that people are not ready to pay more for a handled system) and that it's getting harder to compete with smartphones on the japanese portable games market...
...I love Nintendo and pre-order a full Switch package (with collector Zelda and accesories), but the more I read about the Switch, the more I think it will be the Dreamcast of Nintendo...
While the graphics have taken a slight hit... something that was not unexpected (nobody was seriously thinking the Switch would be as powerful as the PS4), I think the Switch will have it where it counts.
The Switch has a similar amount of gaming RAM to the PS4 & thanks to using flash memory, will have less loading etc. to deal with. This means that the Switch should easily be able to handle the same amount of enemies, effects and hopefully FPS as the larger consoles. That's the trade-off, lower graphics capability but similar multi-tasking.
We'll see. Would be good to see some demo footage.
@ElGrego How much was the 3DS in Euros? I know that it launch in the UK at £229.99, which according to my currency converter is 264€, even with the pound being SO weak.
It's certainly a lot of money for a portable console, but not a huge amount. Consider the PS Vita with any memory stick?
@grayadamson this pic is a snapshot of the trailer. I watched it and the effects fade in and out.. this article original source looks to just make Switch look bad but i will withhold judgment until someone actually plays it
As expected, we gain full portability at the cost of some polygons, shades and particles. And the announcement promised gameplay enhancements despite that. Even Vita, a handheld technically weaker than PS3, can handle a bunch of modern PS4 crossplatforms just by going for less visual fluff; hard to expect any less from an 8th gen Tegra-wielding platform unless you're one of those who still thought it was a mere tablet (and have apparently ever seen a tablet that needs and features a cooling fan inside).
I have no doubt some folks will decry this "graphical inferiority", but IMO that sentiment is only excusable if we see a PS4 game port reduce, say, Uncharted level character models to original FFVII style. The rest is secondary to the overall experience no matter how you look at it.
When will this double pack come to the west? With English translate. That's all I wanna know.
Have the first one for ps4 but haven't played it yet. I may hold off now if this comes to the west from Christmas, fingers crossed.
@AlphaJaguar not handheld mode for sure, judging by the player camera in top left corner, but could be undocked tabletop.
You guys are over optimistic, this DQ heroes is not a graphically outstanding game that's why it's possible to port. And even then it still doesn't look as good as PS4.
Games like Battlefield 1, FF15, Assassins Creed Syndicate, Witcher 3, etc will never be ported. If games like Tomb Raider was simultaneously launched on all consoles, Switch will get the Lara Croft Go version. It will be dumbed down like Wii games.
Man, the switch version looks worse than I thought from these two examples. It was inevitable really, even if the Switch is 3 years newer than PS4 it's a portable that's not super expensive.
@bitleman last time I checked, Japanese industry was still alive, Vita still sold in Japan and PS4 sales were some 10% of the global total.
@AyanamiReign More expensive than a PS4 Slim.
Doesn't matter, I'll be getting it on Switch and not Playstation.
@Vegaphil PS4 version of the first DQH is listed as 22 Gb in size. It'll be interesting to compare if Switch cards can gain an advantage here.
Further proof that this is Wii U 2.0
Given that this is what a portable PS4 looks like, I'll stick with the Switch version.
Looks pretty good to me
@DanteSolablood 3DS relased at 250€... And Nintendo had to do a big price cut to 200€ only a few months after release (remember the ambassador program lol).
Why is it so hard for Nintendo to get it right? Do they really think a "wide footprint" of Wii U gamers, 14 million of them, is better than the current 60 million PS4's sold to core audiences?
Look I will love my Switch, I really will. Super Mario oddysey, Zelda, Splatoon two and Xenoblade all look to be some of the best in their genres. And im certain I wont be the only one. But I will be one amongst a few million who enjoy the switch. Where as Sony and Microsoft will yet again mop up tens upon tens of millions of gamers with their diverse third party line up.
If Switch sells more than 20 million in its life cycle, I will be very surprised. And as a big Nintendo fan, that hurts.
I think I will wait for the "New Switch" with twice the processing power and double the memory.
Switch looks a bit bland to be honest
@Nintendian exactly. Never buy it at release either
@ElGrego Wouldn't Nintendo's Dreamcast be the present Wii U? Because one of the reasons of Dreamcast's failure was the low price of the console, which meant financial losses for Sega practically from the start. And the Wii U is an excellent console that sold poorly.
@DESS-M-8 When I play NHL or metal gear v on PS3 and then on PS4 do I notice a difference? No. Do I notice a difference if I purposely look for the graphical enhancements? Of course I do. Is the game any better on PS4? Not at all
This is a joke, right?
Taking MGSV's example, even disregarding things like smoother textures, better draw distance and lighting, the game runs at 60fps on new gen consoles, while in last-gen consoles runs at a very unstable 30. I'm pretty sure it falls under the 20fps mark at times, like when you're on a horse.
I mean, I get that graphical fidelity isn't the be-all-end-all in gaming, I wouldn't be a Nintendo fan if I didn't think that. However, there's a difference between graphical fidelity and performance, and performance in cross-gen titles is much better in the new hardware.
And to @DESS-M-8 and the 15 people that liked his post: I hope none of you have ever said that you'll get BotW on Switch because it looks and runs so much better.
@Marshi I totally agree with you. It seems clear that the strategy of not competing in graphical terms hasn't helped Nintendo -except from the Wii miracle, but it was an exception-, so why do they keep insisting in going against all logic?
Let's just say this. I have a ps4 and I will hopefully be getting a Switch. Guess which system I'll be getting 3rd party games on if they're offered on it? Probably the one that lets me take it ANYWHERE.
I bought the original 3DS, upgraded to XL then upgrade again to the New 3DS XL. Knowing Nintendo, early adopter always get screwed.
I love Nintendo as much as you guys, but some of you sound downright delusional. DQH is not a heavy game graphically, and they had to make compromises to have it (apparently) running smooth on the Switch. This is worrying, and you know it. Third party support might dwindle down the line because of sheer lack of power. Again.
And to say the PS4 isn't a leap in relation to the PS3 is a pipe dream, sorry. Of course it wouldn't be as striking as the leap from PS2 to PS3, but play Uncharted 4 and we'll talk later.
Again, I love Nintendo, and I have high hopes for the Switch, but let's keep it real at least.
And this is why Switch will fail.
@DESS-M-8 to be fair, PS4 worth is more about developer comfort - Sony ditched Cell and went for a relatively common and easy-to-work-with architecture, not much unlike what Nintendo reportedly did with Nvidia's help. Plus the beefed up RAM and other perks were utilized by some developers to richer ends than just graphical fluff (GTA 5, for instance, gained a first-person mode for the first time in the series, something that made simply driving around even more fun). Plus, a new console was when Sony finally included near-full remote play on hardware level, one of the big reasons I have and can enjoy PS4 games at all (despite taking up to ten minutes to connect at times, but you can't have it all... until March 3, at least).
But otherwise, yeah. And while Switch's portable factor can't afford strictly equivalent equipment (unit heatup and noise took several versions to reduce; I'm afraid similar conditions could make Switch a potential Galaxy Note 7 successor), practice shows it rarely needs to - meaning games alone, and Nintendo isn't releasing a multitasking media streaming BD player here either. Like I said in my own comment, even Vita can run 2016 game ports (and fresher upcoming releases like Valkyria Revolution) with trivial losses in visual presentation, and Nvidia's own Shields have boasted beefier tech in the years since.
@ElGrego Ah, okay. Seems the 3DS was cheaper outside of Britain, likely tax. However, the Ambassador programme was just because the 3DS was launched so badly. Not saying that won't happen to the Switch... but it wasn't the original price that's the issue. The new 3DS is still around £180 and is far less powerful.
Who knows, maybe the next revision of Switch will have 2 screens. This way they can start selling 3DS games as part of their Virtual console games.
@Moroboshi876 Its like this: Graphics DONT matter. They dont, they really really dont. If a game plays beautifully, it is loved. Its as simple as that. HOWEVER!!! In order to run these beautifully played games a system needs to have the OOpmh to enable developers to make said beautifully played game. Add on top of that the need for power in order to run third party titles that are obviously developed with the most popular hardware in mind (clue: its a ps4, the most powerful console at the moment) then you realise that, yes, graphics dont matter, but being able to run games at an acceptable level does.
Now I dont have a degree in game development and to be honest im pretty much a tech noob, and I just put into one paragraph what the problem with Nintendos thinking is. So if some bozo like me can deduce that, why on Earth is Nintendo having such a hard time grasping what is needed to be done in order to succeed?!?!
@Moroboshi876
I admit my opinion on WiiU is different than yours... I still play it everyday as my main gaming system (I'm so much into Tokyo Mirage Session currently.... loving it), but at the same time I still hate the WiiU Gamepad (cheap, not practical, bad screen quality, poor battery...)... I understand why it did not sell well.
My comparison to DC was only about the fact that I really fear that the Switch coul be the last console made by Nintendo... Their choices and marketing seem so awkward... And after the reveal event the game journalists seem to all think the same : they love the new Zelda but have a lot of concerns regarding the new console...
Even myself, I have a hard time convincing myself that my preorder is not a mistake...
@Marshi PS4 Pro is the most powerful, the original PS4 is already outdated. Games on PS4 Pro has no jaggies and runs at 4k. Based on technical specs, PS4 Pro is roughly 10 times faster than Switch.
@AlexSora89 Amen. I also believe game graphics have reached the evolution ceiling past which it would/will be mostly Ms Resolution reaching further to the point the human eye would struggle to make out even in ultramegaeffinhighdefinition game called Real World... and Mr Framerate desperately trying to keep up.
It looks alright in my opinion as i don't see much difference in the versions.
@Nintendian Yeah I know, I was using the term PS4 as a broad platform as PS4 on its own is more powerful than any other console. Was easier to type rather than convoluting my soap box moment!
@bitleman Nothing like putting another game console down for no reason...this wasn't made by Sony and they're not killing the japanese market...maybe look at how bad nintendo is doing and go from there instead of being biased.
@ElGrego Its a simple fact that if you dont like Zelda, there is litterally NO POINT in getting a Switch on Launch day. That is really really really bad. Every other console launch over the last 2 decades has always had at least two or three must buys. And while Zelda is absolutely a must buy to me. Not everyone is a fan.
@ElGrego Now I understand you. Yes, I also think it will be the last console of the company if it sells poorly as the Wii U did.
And the fact that so few games will actually be available at launch won't help the initial sales. The critical games will come in Holiday season and it means that the first months of the Switch won't be as good as they should be in order to attract buyers and third parties.
I want to think that they preferred launching it already -after so much talking about the "NX" and waiting for it- and the great games will come later because they weren't polished enough, so in the long run it will be a good thing to have to wait all these months.
I pre-ordered it just in case, but I guess I'll cancel. I'm interested in Zelda, but I won't buy a 330 euro (and no game) console just to spend 60 more in one game and play only this game for months. I believe next Christmas we'll have Mario bundled packs and better offers.
@banacheck I don't really think of the Switch as either a handheld or home console anymore. I went to the event in Tokyo and have to say it's a lot more. It's the most innovative console to date.
Games doesn't need pretty graphics to be fun, but good graphics can make a fun game even better.
Have any of you seen 'The last of us Part 2' trailer? The entire trailer was rendered with PS4 Pro in realtime. For an emotional game like this, good graphic serves a purpose in making it more immersive.
Again I have to stress, im excited for the switch. And if I think of it as a successor to 3ds (It is despite what Nintendo are desperately and stupidly trying to tsay otherwise) then I feel much happier about it. Marketting the switch as the most powerful handheld ever made I think would drum up much wider hype for the system. They could even have the tagline "Now you are playing with Portable power". And the advertising that this revolutionary handheld can be played on the tv...I just thinknthat would be much better than going up against PS4 and Xbox and losing terribly before its even gone on sale...
@Moroboshi876 Good for fans like us man (I admit with having a Switch with Zelda Botw, Mario Kart 8 DX and Mario Odyssey could make 2017 an amazing gaming year on my side...), but very dangerous for the mass of non-Nintendo fans and casual gamers... After 6 months with everyone saying that the Switch is an expensive japanese gadget with not a lot of games, it will be hard to convince consummers and third parties to get it... Even Mario Odyssey at holyday season may not be enough...
@Megas Thats exactly what I mean dude...
Looks pretty similar. If it plays the same, then I would pick the Switch version. I can take it with me, and I assume will have better loading times.
Also, PS4 has been around for several years now. Developers are more familiar with the hardware, and know how to push it harder and optimize better. Let's see what Switch games look like 3 years from now.
So where is this system on power? It is stronger than Wii U but weaker than X1 and PS4. It can run unreal 4 so it can run some games this gen but they will look in the middle between hd consoles. I wonder if this will work going forward.
@Marshi Not to troll, but how would you advertive a portable console with 2h30 battery life ("Now you are playing with Portable power... and a power cord" LOL) ?
@ElGrego Ezactly. Hence why im certain the Switch will be history repeating itself and it will be the Wii U all over again.
@ElGrego Ha ha not trolling if its funny and true dude! Though to be fair 2.5 to 6 hours is pretty much standard for mobile devices nowadays. Still rubbish I know but its rubbish a lot have learnt to live with. Try watching a movie on your I phone and watch that battery go!
Eww switch looks terrible. This is concerning.
@Marshi Ok man, so we completly agree... We are Nintendo fans who are sadly watching Nintendo repeat (even stronger) their past errors...
Imagine if they had put less money in HD Vibration dev and more money in good flash memory size, decent battery life and graphical power, if they had advertised the system as a powerful handheld (that can be plugged on a TV) and if they had packaged 1,2, Switch with the console... Sincerly, I believe they could have hit the jackpot... It wasn't that hard IMO.
PS : regarding my own experience with power of handelds, I can watch movies, play games or make music on my iPad for over 8-9 hours with no need to plug in, and I can watch movies/anime on my Android phone (OnePlus 3T) for over 9 hours in a raw...
Are both of the games on one cart? I think we need to consider this as well.
@Megas Erm...thanks... 😳😳😳😳😳 Lol
@ElGrego Well perhaps in the UK they put rubbish batteries in them because thats not my experience with them!
Im actually quite excited to see what this hd rumble haptic feedback is like. Apparently when playing Sonic mania the pad jolts in the direction you dash, and if sonic hits the ground hard the pad jolts downwards. Sounds awesome and immersive. But given the choice of that or spending money on developing a powerful graphics card for the system...
I do think that is enough parity that we should still get major 3rd party games if they are willing. Also early in a console's life games don't look their best. I don't think this is cause for concern yet. Also these games came out on EVERYTHING in Japan. Are we certain they tried to port the PS4 version?
I'm getting BoTW on the Switch for two reasons. 1 is because it's the only launch title I'm interested in. And 2 is because I want to be able to play it everywhere. I've always dreamed of the day a console released that let me play full console games anywhere and with the Switch it feels like that dream can finally be realised. Now if the game developers will just start supporting it.
@Findonovan95 3DS already provides a lot of "full console games" that you can play everywhere... No ?
So the PS4 is cheaper, and things look better on it. I'm quite tempted to pick up a PS4 in the near future, but it's probably going to be a long time before I consider getting a Switch.
I have a PS4, and an XBone and a Wii U - they are all there , connected up to the tv - but when I come home form work - I play Splatoon and Hyrule Warriors and Zelda. I completed the Cinematic stories on Last of Us remastered and Gears 4 - which were great. but they don't hold my appeal. . . .
@ElGrego Nintendo has no control over flash memory size and it will cost a lot more than HD rumble. Most mobile phones have just jumped to 32GB standard and more results in 100+ dollars more! They aren't developing it..
There is little they could do on battery or graphics either.. if they got Nvidia to use more current hardware, the switch wouldn't be releasing for another year yet. Nvidia themselves only just pumped out a 1050 for laptops this month! Its not like they didn't design this with the best that was available when they begun.
We need to stop mixing our "wants" with the realities. Nintendo have done an amazing job with the hardware, and the only way to improve on it is to delay it even longer. Apart from the screen and cellular modems, they have crammed more tech into this device than mobile phones have - while being a good 50% cheaper!
I'm with everyone.. I want more battery life and graphics power but reality is what it is - they had little choice and couldn't wait another year. My iPhone 7 doesn't even last 2.5 hours playing games - so they haven't done overly bad at all.
@hendie001 Man I hope you are troling. I mean I love the Switch already 2 preordered and all, but come on graphically is VERY far away, lightning, particles, geometry is very far.
In the future Switch will be fondly remembered as Nintendo's swan song, the final console from the house of Mario.
"Remember that company Nintendo? They made that tablet with 2 vibrators and miserable battery life."
"Oh yeah, The Witch!"
"No, Switch!"
"That's what I said... the vibrating controllers are very popular with the ladies. Women love that console, the joy-con brought them lots of joy."
"What?"
"Oh nothing, just too bad that hardcore gamers didn't like it. I will always remember Mario and Zelda made by Nintendo. After Nintendo sold off their gaming business, those games are not the same anymore.
"Yeah I know, they are not fun anymore. Now Mario swears too much, did you know that Mario didn't talk at all in the original games?"
"Really?
...
@Ichi-Tan
U can order them online if not, becouse the switch is region free. But i hope it will come over.
@cfgk24 Right there with you mate, but most people want those third party cinematic experiences. People like me and you comprise a very small percentage of the gamer demographic and thats why the Wii U failed comercially. I want Nintendo to be the giant they once were rather than the secondary console manufacturers they have seemingly become.
@OzHuski As a Oneplus phones user, I'm not surprised by you iPhone user opinion... I'm used to get better for less dollars I guess
[Edit] to clarify (and not only troll) : my new OnePlus 3T costed me 430$ and it has 64Gb of flash memory, a battery life wich permits me to watch movies for over 9 hours in a row (with dash charge to get full battery life in less than an hour) and it got all the modern features you can ask in a celle phone...
These images do not give a good representation of the game visually, use captured videos from both versions and then make a comparison. That would make it a lot easier -and fairer to judge.
DQH isn't just a PS4 game, it's also on PS3 and Vita, so this is probably a port of 1 of those 2, not the PS4 version, which is how they are able to get it out so fast.
Looks OK to me.
@NinjaWaddleDee
Me too i have all the consoles, but the switch is the delicious chocolate on top of an already awesome cake.
Im bringing it to work becouse now i only play the stupid stuff from my phone lol. Switch is just genius.
@rjejr Sadly we(or maybe just me) don't know when development started. So their's no way to tell, but perhaps you're right.
@fchinaski I've seen Ucharted 4, and its value as a "heavy graphics game" is largely about crisper picture and more cinematic impression (half of which is usually the credit to give the animators). And considering how many companies in the industry have the knack AND the budgets for this kind of smooth HD cinematics (Sony themselves being one of them)... I suspect "third party" is a broader term than what you're talking.
From what I keep hearing post factum, third parties' technical issues with Wii U were development complexity and lack of common engine support rather than graphics. Switch addressed this, going by developer impressions lately. And in a vicious circle manner, there were the sales; many third parties didn't hesitate much to port/remake their games even to popular handhelds (PSP, early Vita, 3DS, DS... even Gameboy Advance received a bunch of contemporary home console ports, in the era when polygon count was still a real fad!).
@damo You work at Pushsquare, do we know for sure Switch is ported from PS4 and not Vita
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=hmlTHZ8UITE
Or PS3
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=6r0DFmfAEW8
The PS3 version looks similar to Hyrule Warriors on Wii U.
@Marshi And they can be once again with the Switch. . Tell me - how many units do they have to sell to make switch a success?
What they have given us here is the answer to all my prayers! Couple of years ago - I thought " I wish I could take my Gamepad with me on the train/plane/to my mates house. .
@Marshi marketing the Switch solely as the most powerful handheld would be a bad strategy. It would miss the core concept of the console and so much of what it can do. They are marketing it correctly now, but Ultimately it will come down to the software whether it sells or not.
@AlphaJaguar A lot of companies probably aren't going to do more than simple upscaling when docking.
Honestly, FE Warriors- a game built from the ground-up for the Switch -will probably look a fair bit better than how DQ Heroes does on it.
I don't mind the graphical downgrade to reach the targeted performance on the Switch. Sparkles, shiny floors and more polygon aren't going to make the game less enjoyable for me, and I value the portable factor since I like not being tied to my TV to play.
I think the Switch has good potential, not every single person is focused on 4k graphics, some value the portability that Sony abandoned when they cut support for the Vita.
Lots of good and bad from the screenshots.
Good - Switch is getting a previously Sony exclusive game. How many of those did Wii U get?
Good - And it's getting 2 games for the price of one. Well probably.
Good - The difference between the top screenshots looks like it could be based on just portal activation. All of that glowy stuff may just not have appeared yet in the bottom pic.
Bad - How can so many people NOT tell the difference between curved windows and windows made up of straight lines? If Switch can't do curved lines that would kind of suck. (It's those lined windows which makes me think this is not a PS4 port, but PS3 or Vita.)
Bad - This isn't the most graphically intense game, if Switch has a problem with this, basically a PS3 game, it is certainly going to have problems with true PS4 and X1 games.
I think the important thing to take away is Switch is getting 3rd party games. And even if they look like PS3 games, so what? PS3 had some great looking games, most of which were also either ported to PS4 or released on PS4. PS4 isn't "all that". And developers need to make games for Xbox One, so Switch isn't that far off the mark. I'll take PS3 looking games on Switch over no games on Wii U. But that's what we're going to get.
@cfgk24 Its not so much about an exact number I want them to make as a desire to see them succeed and even beat the competition. And at the moment, they are a distant third.
It shoukd be like that. Im sure some hard core fans would scoff at this, but can you imagine if Nintendo made a console that was, say, twice as poweful as Scorpio or anything else in the Console market at the time. With just a standard, but lovely feeling Pro controller. Nintendo would be able to make the Zeldas and the Marios and Third parties could easily develop the Assassins Creeds and the Call Of Duties. They would DOMINATE the competition. They really would. Instead we get all these "inovations" that, sure have exciting concepts like motion control or portability, but take several steps back in areas that will turn off many gamers who just want a game, a controller and a sofa to play it on.
@nhSnork I see what you mean, but you're underselling U4. It's not just about crisper picture and cinematics. It's about scope, the size and level of detail of the environments, realistic lighting and climatic effects, physics and intelligent soundscapes that change depending on the environment. None of this could come close to be achieved on the PS3. I'm only saying any argument saying that there isn't "that much of a leap" between the two machines is largely uninformed.
Omg how disappointing
Odds are that the Switch version is an enhancement of the PS Vita version of the game.
@Marshi
I'm sorry to interrupt but gamer that just ONLY want a game, controller, sofa, nothing else = Couch Potato ?
Better have some good habits by taking it outside, have some exercise, not just sit down, stared at tv and game console for more than 6 hours to play, eat less healthy foods and less awareness about the surrounding. That bad habits should be changed
the first heroes is one of those games that i really felt belonged on a nintendo platform. forget the stills. the important thing for this game is the frame rate. still images do not convey that.
btw it looks like the heroes ii version for the switch is based on the vita version.
@roboshort And precisely because of the way they are marketting the thing will turn off many. IS turning off many because just being abke to play the next Mario and Zelda isnt enough for people. Its a chicken and egg situation, much like the Wii U had. Where gamers wont buy the system due to lack of games. And developers wont make games for the system due to lack of popularity.
Marketed as a handheld first with the ability to play on tv second, I feel, would make more sense. But I will be thrilled to eat a huge dose of humble pie and happily admit I was waaay in the wrong if the Switch does get the support it deserves.
@nhSnork
Precisely. The whole graphical powers debacle will hopefully put out of its misery in the following five or ten years, realistically speaking.
Then the only things that matter will be games and pro-consumer-ness; Nintendo already is bursting through an open door with the former, it's up to them to up the ante on the latter.
@Anti-Matter Ha ha what? I wasnt implying gamers are couch potatoes. Just that many gamers just want a standard gaming system and a standard controller to play the most diverse range of software possible. Not just first party software, but third party too.
@ElGrego yes. But its not the most powerful handset out there, and if the Switch was only used for video it would also get over 9 hours. What memory is faster? Memory speed/size depend price. Nintendo could be using faster memory but smaller. Also - it doesn't have anywhere near the tech that the Switch has - or are you dismissing that?
While your having a dig at the iPhone - go ahead, I hate them and honestly got given it and is my current daily driver. You will notice I said "gaming" - which video is not. Video uses nothing of the GPU or CPU, and is irrelevant for comparison unless the Switch had a video only comparison - which it would do just as well in.
Not trying to have dig at you over this.. but it needs to be put in proper context. A lot of people are skimming over things and not presenting correct facts.
I am a huge Nintendo fan, and I'm disappointed in a lot of things about the Switch (mainly launch lineup). But I'm also realistic and can take a step back and see why I didn't get more battery life or better graphics.
Personally, I want the games anyway and on the go!
@AlexSora89 Agree 100%. Just think of the next Metroid with the writing and graphical fidelity of Uncharted or The Last of Us! They could STILL do that with the Switch, sure, but inevitably it will be compared and contrasted and put up against graphical masterpeices like Uncharted 4 will fail hard for a lot of people.
Playing devils advocate for a moment though, Breath of the Wild has to be one of the most beautiful and cinematic games ive ever seen. So I guess we will see what the future holds...
@Marshi problem is, nobody wants to buy a portable system these days. Everyone has mobiles and tablets - while I would buy a switch marketed as a handheld first - I'm also the Nintendo fan that will lap it up regardless. 3DS had a really rough start due to price (And design)
I don't think they are marketing it wrong at all - a lot of the issues are stemming from the price which was "leaked" and incorrect so everyone's expectations weren't met. Leading to unhappy gamers - add on that not revealing all the games, well...
I do believe you said it in another thread though - I think they should do a bundle without the dock. Switch alone and drop the price. Let them market it as console first portable second, but give gamers the choice of "starter pack" and then like classic nes have a "gamer pack" which includes the dock and other bits. Heck they could just advertise the home console "starting at $$$" so people know there is price points and options.
@bitleman Except it's not just handheld. It's both console and handheld that's why it's called hybrid machine.
It doesn't look good. On the other hand, Dragon's Quest Heroes uses a lot of power to generate all the enemies on screen. In a more traditional action RPG (not musou), I could see the graphics having an easier time keeping up. Nothing wrong with the Switch being outperformed on graphics, as long as it doesn't turn (didn't want to write switch) off third party developers making games for the system.
@Ichi-Tan You can always import. No more region locking!
Put it this way guys. If I only played Nintendo consoles, then last year I would have missed out on Doom, Tomb Raider, Colin Mcrae Rally, Dark Souls 3, Overwatch, Battleborn, Call of Duty Infinite warefare, Battlefield 1, Fifa 2017, Pro evolution Soccer 2017, Assassins Creed Ezio Collection, Inside, Banner Saga 1+2, The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine, Fallout 4 Far Harbour, Skyrim Special edition and lots lots more I cant think of.
Forget about graphics and just think about all those games. I dont see this year changing on missing third party support this year. And missing out on some of those games is a complete deal breaker to many gamers. see what im getting at. Nintendo have created a cool concept at the cost of all those games above. And with the Switch its looking like they have done exactly the same.
@OzHuski It wasnt me who suggested selling the switch without the dock. I think that would be disasterous and muddy a lot of peoples understanding of the system. Well anyway, im no market expert so who knows what works and what doesn't? Just my opinion. I just want Nintendo to do well and attain the popularity they had with the Wii and the Snes.
There's not really too much of a difference just glad I got my switch pre-ordered
@OzHuski Thanks for your reply man, not trying to dig at you either
I guess we all are Nintendo fans and agree mostly on the Switch subject... My concerns are not really 'will I like the switch?' or 'is it a good system made by Nintendo?',... It is 'will the Switch be well received by most consumers?' and currently, my feeling is that the answer to this last question is clearly 'no'.
@Nintendian Not true. It is no real 4k. Sony has come forward and stated so. It is just some upscaling.
Still, anyone saying they don't see the difference, should buy themselves some glasses. It is glaring and speaks volumes of the Switch pitiful innards as a home console.
@MrGawain I assume your joking lol
@Marshi
That scene with Zelda crying. Just... that.
(My animated gif search-fu is weak with this particular scene.)
Or even something as simple as Zelda rushing to someone - presumably Link - is notable:
All of this just feels straight out of a movie trailer.
But make no mistake of that: it's not because of voice acting alone.
They could have played it safe and kept the dialogue boxes, but instead they wanted to give voice acting a whirl. And boy does voice acting amplify the already achieved goal of a more cinematic Zelda game. This feels epic on so many levels. And unlike Skyrim, which hails from a franchise of Final Fantasy-esque-ly unconnected stories, this is Zelda we're talking about. Zelda is being given a voice and, unlike the CD-i games, this is done the right way.
I can't wait for those sweet perfect-slash-near-perfect score to come and help the game, alongside a few Switches if possible, sell like hotcakes.
@Marshi well said and me too. But I'm realistic. Like you, there is a lot of other games on the Xbox and PS that are worth playing. That said I definitely think their exclusives are getting smaller and smaller and are becoming more timed. Look at MS's exclusives this year - love my Xbox but there is few games I actually want for it right now.
Still going to be a lot of exclusives you will need a switch for. I'd personally prefer the one console - but for now my Xbone and Switch combo will work well.
I'm still hopeful with the 80+ games in development there's a lot out there for everyone. We just need to show the debs with our money we want those games on switch.
@ElGrego Very well put matey. We are indeed all Nintendo fans here. I mean if I had to make a top ten favourite games ever, im sure 5 or six of them would be Nintendo games or games made exclusively for Nintendo. (Xenoblade Chronicles X, best JRPG ever, just saying...).
I'm not a big fan of pretty decent. The wii u had pretty decent graphics. Here we are five years later and Nintendo couldn't improve their graphics on the cheap? Five years!!!! I just really don't understand how they justify it to themselves. How do they come to these conclusions about what we the consumers would be happy with?
@ElGrego utterly agree with you. But I think that stemmed from a really shoddy switchmas reveal. Let's be honest - I loved what they showed of the Switch, but games talk, and they didn't show anything.
I think if they showed more of what's in the pipeline and what they are doing we wouldn't. be having this conversation. But right now, I agree with you and a lot of gamers are looking at it and go "no thanks".
@maceng the way I understand it all 2 million units are sold.
What a lazy port, it would've been possible to make that look much better on the Switch. I would buy the version with the best graphics if I was interested in this game, and that would be the PS4 version.
@DESS-M-8 Gamecube to Wii wasn't a huge leap either.
@AlexSora89 Absolutely mate. Im calling it now, Breath of the Wild will go done in history as one of the most finely crafted peices of entertainment ever. I mean im buying the Switch PURELY to play the best version of this game, oh and to get the collectors edition! But thats just it. Breath of the Wild is the ONLY game doing this. Ps4 and xbox, even at launch had several of these cinematic games made for them. Of course me and you will argue that Zelda craps all over the other games. But to the general consumer thinking if buying a console they will see ONE amazing game for the switch and several for the conpetition. And they will overlook the Switch. But hey im ready to eat my words. I am Soooooo ready to eat my words! Time will tell...
Pre order...... CANCELLED!
The only thing I am sure of about this is that I'm going to get the Switch version to get the 2-in-1 game deal.
No thanks to this. Excited to see the comments from all the early adopters of this setup, but already sounds like a massive disappointment. Luckily I still have hardware and 100's games to enjoy NES, SNES, Game Cube, Wii, WiiU, Gameboy Advance, and 3DS. Good luck to all. If I adopt this system it would probably be a year or more after launch, if it seems to amazing to pass up.
@Marshi as I said before all 2 million launch units are sold.Amazon, best buy,target,Walmart and GameStop.which is a good start,only ones you can find are from those idiots trying to make a buck.which will have about 3 weeks to make there money before more are on the shelf.I'm not saying its going to out sale anything but its a good start better then the Wii u had.and once they announce pokemon stars as rumors have it.I need to say no more
That's a very clear downgrade to my eyes, but is that down to a bad port rather than hardware? Look at what happens to the window arches on Switch. Pretty sure it can handle curved lines. These images don't even look as good as the PS3 version of the original.
@OzHuski I argued this with my mates at the Wii U launch and I will argue it now: After several years I woukd argue the Wii U has just as many must haves as any of the conpetition. Mario 3d world, Xenoblade Chronicles X, Splatoon, Mario Kart 8, Tokyo Mirrage sessions, Bayonetta 1+2, Pikmin 3, Wonderful 101, Captain Toad. Im sure there are a few others im forgetting. My point is Ps4 and Xbox, when you slice away the filler, have similar numbers in terms of true must haves for the system.
So please dont think I hate Nintendo guys. Im just a concerned fan who wishes the very best for them.
@Slim1999 The Wii U had a very strong start mate. They sold out before launch too. The true test is going to be at christmas. If they can sell a few million over the holiday period then that will bring third parties on board. We will see.
Ps. Not to be arguementative, but that 2 million that Reggie fils Aime talked about is worldwide. And units are readily available still over here in the UK. Im sure they will sell two million in March though.
I am surprised at how much worse the lower screenshot is, actually. The arches comprise of six straight lines - nowhere near the smooth curve of the PS4 version. It makes Switch looks far more like a "3DS upgrade" rather than the powerful console it seems at other times.
Looks like the Vita version. Doesn't mean Switch can't do better though. It's clear it's not going to match PS4 graphics but this could just be a lazy port.
@Slim1999 First of all, no need for name calling. It really degrades anything you have to say afterwards, but still I'll answer.
Second: all comparisons between PS4 titles and Switch is moot. The PS4 is far more capable, and teh Switch is a long way from having their games optimized. Is a handheld not a home console like I said before.
Third: the difference is there. Yes, the differences between the PS3 and the Wii were glaring. And even between the Wii U and the PS3. Still, I bought both because I really don't care. Just because I'm pointing out a difference, whcih anyone, even the maker of the news can readily see it, doesn't mean I'm wrong or biased.
And yes, the Switch will sell the 2 MM, in given time. The Wii U sold 3 MM in six weeks.
If you weren't this dumb you could see that I'm a huge Nintendo fan and spend 200-300 dollars every month on accessories, new consoles and games. Just look to the left.
@Slim1999
You can still pre-order in the UK and Nintendo have said they're only shipping 2 million at launch. Wii U sold over 3 million in its first 6 weeks, launches don't mean that much though obviously it's better if that 2 million sell than if they don't.
When i see this kind of statement "More expensive than a PS4 Slim." i know that the writer is dumb, hater or both. Can you buy a PS4 Slim and play on the go? No, so stop make this kind of comparsion. Omg Nintendolife was such a good place without this kind of people, but now they are multiplying like a cancer. We go it, you guys don´t like the system, so go play you freaking PS4 (a very good console) and stop being dumb here.
Impressive for a tablet to look as good as this.
Still, if you're saying you can't see a difference, you're either lying or blind. There's a definite difference there.
@rennandovale
Nintendo are marketing it as a home console. Part of its functionality is that it operates as a home console. People are going to make that comparison no matter how much it upsets you.
BTW a 'cancer?' Really?
@CTMike Given how well Hyrule Warriors played on Wii U, I strongly suspect they'll pull this off for the more technically impressive Switch.
Bar the particle effects it looks pretty much the same.
@KirbyTheVampire yeah, when people post FPS comparison videos I'm pretty much clueless about what's happening or the differences...
But in this two images is clear the difference in lightning and particle effects or some mumbo jumbo like that, even then, the models and enviroment looks almost identical to me, that coming from a little "portable" console.
Thats impressive all right.
@electrolite77 Do you compares a prius with a ferrari because they are cars? NO. If people really hear what Nintendo says they would know that NS is not directly competing with PS4/Xone but people nitpick just like you did for the sake of argument. Yeah, dumb people upset me but you are free to like this them.
So the Switch is under powered and won't get any good 3rd party support. Tell me something I wouldn't have guessed a year ago. Still disappointing but hey at least we have HD RUMBLE!!....
The most disappointing alteration, to me, is the actual architecture of the windows being simplified and made blockier in the lower image comparison. That's a rather surprising change. Obviously not the kind of thing that would keep me from enjoying the game - I will be picking this up if it comes West - but it's certainly not going to have someone buy this version when they could opt for the PS4 version. As a counterpoint, of course, this one can be played on the go.
@rennandovale I don't think being disappointed in the Switch makes anyone dumb. Also, I think if there were only 3 models of car on the market they would get compared pretty extensively. Try again.
@ottospooky They are both on one cart. It's a two in one type deal.
@rennandovale Who they say they're competing with and who they're actually competing with are two different things.
@maceng On the optimization aspect, that's actually a pretty good job considering how much time Nintendo usually gives developers in terms of notice for their console launches and we also have to look at how long the PS4 has been on the market for. When DQ Heroes 2 came out, the PS4 had been on the market already for 3 years AND the engine had already been created (when they worked on the first one).
If anything @PlywoodStick may be onto something with developers still being inexperienced.
The most telling change with a game of this type is IF there will be a difference in number of enemies and if so will it be extremely noticeable.
@McGruber Where did a say that people can't be disappointed about the system? I´m talking about specific dumb comparsions, the same can be said when you compares Desktops with laptops.
@McGruber There are much more than 3 playing devices on the market, try again.
@rennandovale
That's a silly comparison. I'm just telling you how it is. It obviously upsets you a lot judging by the temper tantrum but no amount of foot stamping will change how some people see the Switch. Especially with Nintendo saying 'dumb' stuff like....
https://www.google.co.uk/amp/www.gamespot.com/amp-articles/switch-is-a-home-console-at-heart-not-a-3ds-replac/1100-6446967/?client=ms-android-motorola
games appears to be incredibly rushed
Looks like they simply ported the Vita version. Both are ARM-based handhelds, so I assume Vita-to-Switch ports are easier than XBone/PS4-to-Switch.
EDIT: Also, this comments section. Wow. We need to start a fundraiser to get EVERYONE here laser eye surgery. Contacts and glasses simply aren't enough to correct all this poor eyesight.
@Ernest_The_Crab
I agree. I wouldn't read too much into this or other early ports.
It's not a big deal now, but it's going to be a problem later on. I don't see many 3rd parties porting multi-platform games if they have to run into the inconvenience of changing/downgrading their games to fit the Switch's specs.
Also, have we decided what the Switch is or are we waiting for Nintendo to announce the NX2?! Is it a home system that you can carry around or a portable system that connects to the telly?! Because, actual state of affairs, it just seems to offer the worst of both worlds (the high price and paid services of home consoles finally meets the limited power and short battery life of portables!!).
Honestly I think these comparisons reflect more on Squeenix' attention to this game than it does to what EITHER console is capable of. These images for the PS4 version don't look particularly great by PS4 standards, and as such, I doubt the Switch rendering is remotely the best the Switch can do either. 1st party, sure, but what we've seen from Zelda, Splatoon, and Kart look better than that. It looks almost 3DS-like. Maybe a last minute port from an intended 3DS release to a Switch release?
Also, DQ is primarily a Japanese franchise (for now), and Japan doesn't care very much for home consoles and loves their Nintendo handhelds. If I were Squeenix, I'd be betting this game sells primarily on Switch (over the long term) and is played primarily handheld. As such, if I were Squeenix, I'd set a fairly low render target to get close to that 5-6 hour battery life to keep the game running as long as possible at the cost of some shininess. I'd presume that's what my players would be most interested in (considering the sales of prior 3DS games.)
@Syrek24
Very good summary! It could do without the Reggie-speak in the first paragraph though
One thing that I think everyone gets backward though is who exactly is the "hardcore gamers". Ignoring PC for a moment (that tends to have a core of OCD gamers), Nintendo customers seem to be the audience that is the most proactive in seeking new game content, both from first and third party, and most active in terms of seeing games with long play times. I doubt such numbers exist but I find it likely that Nintendo gamers, on average, spend more time playing games (including playing games on other platforms) than Xbox and Playstation exclusive customers (excluding PSXBox customers that also play Nintendo consoles.) Nintendo is really the one with the "hardcore" audience, meaning consumers vested and engaged in the product, particularly the purchase of gaming software (Nintendo's lifeblood), while the games often referred to as "hardcore" are often short cinematic experiences, trimmed and streamlined to reach a broad audience of "media consumers", who are otherwise not particularly vested or skilled gamers, and they spend fortunes advertising on non-gaming related media and events to promote significantly to that audience. I believe the attach rate (software sales to hardware sales) for all Nintendo consoles excluding the Wii has been consistently higher than PSXBox (i.e. there are more PSXBox customers who buy 1 or 2 games and that's it, while there are more Nintendo customers who buy a variety of games in a smaller space of time.) Wii had the most dismal attach of any non-disaster (Jaguar etc) console ever. Even WiiU had a good attach. Not many bought hardware, but the ones that did sure bought a lot of software!) The other consoles are consoles featuring imagery most related to activities, events and locales that can be seen as "hardcore" in a media context, but in reality it masks a market that is less vested and proactive in actual gaming products.
When you flip that thinking around the right way, a lot of the industry trends and activities (and market shares) make a lot more sense! And it puts the damage the Wii did to Nintendo in a much more sensible light as well.
Quite a difference, sadly. All the particles have gone.
@Slim1999 Comment deleted - please play nicer.
@AVahne I can see the difference but I'll take the lasik treatment since you are offering, lol. Or if someone wants to fund a new prosthetic for me (grins) ...I have been thinking about getting an 8 ball. Perhaps a slime in honor of DQ?
@rennandovale We don't like the r-word being used around here, thanks.
It's a port of the PS3 version, apparently.
Having it on the go is cool, but I'll stick to the PS4 version. I'll get Fire Emblem Warriors on Switch, of course.
This will end up being a larger issue later on. Switch having Multiplats may seem cool at first, but if every port is going to be a generation behind then obviously those who own a PS4 or XBONE will just get their respective, graphically surperior versions. The only one interested will be either those who don't mind the graphical hit in trade of taking it on the go, or those who don't have the alternatives to begin with. The solution? Have the Switch strong in exclusives and don't rely on Multiplats like the XBONE.
@OzHuski yeah okay mate there was numerous reports that it costs Apple an extra £2 per iPhone to produce the 32gb models over the 16gb yet they charge an extra £100 for the extra space. Do not confuse corporate greed with reality.
Unfortunately for me, I don't care as much about portability. My Switch will be docked 99% of the time. So I'll be buying the best version of the game.
@The-Chosen-one @Kalmaro Thanks you guys !! I allways forget about the region free
I'm not worried about the graphics; I'm worried about the price. Remember Fire Emblem Fates S.E.? That's where my fear lies.
Hell, even Bravely Default 1 is getting pricey.
@Moroboshi876
You're forgetting the Game Boy, DS, and 3DS era apparently. All three were graphically inferior compared to direct competitors and Nintendo's hardware sold better. Their strategy has had more successes than failures. It ain't graphically inferior hardware that causes their failures... it's marketing and lack of consistent releases.
I just watched the Switch gameplay HD footage. It looks awesome! i want it even more now.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K07BtCaVehs
@AlexSora89
Why did you post that gif image!! it makes the wait even more harder! lol.. the more i see it, the more i want it..
@bitleman What are you talking about? Sony likes Nintendo and their boss was at the Switch event. (oh wait, he was there to sabotage it obviously!)
@UK-Nintendo I would suggest a visit to an Optometrist.
@Seacliff That's a fair point, but why have a ps4 or xbone when a PC will have better perfermance and more choices in games?
Well this is a game that wasn't built for Switch. I'm confident ground-up Switch titles can and will look fabulous. Then again, 3rd parties don't and won't ever care much about that, apart from casual party titles and other small-time indie-like games, so... Meh. :/ Pokémon Stars can't come soon enough.

@AlexSora89 Do you mean artistic direction will always trump pure pixel pushing power? I agree. A game with great art direction will last a lifetime. A photo-realistic game will look good for as long as it takes to make a better photo-realistic one.
@CB85 First party titles have pretty much always looked the best on Nintendo's platforms. Which is both a good and bad thing I guess. What Monolith do with Nintendo's hardware blows my mind!
@ceedee haha
It's actually worse than I expected. I'm sure Switch can do better than that, but again this is a port... So well... Not really care though, I don't plan to own any console other than Switch anyway.
@Ichi-Tan Well it IS region-free, so even if they never come over (please please pleaaaaase bring them all over!) we can just import. Gotta brush up on that Japanese.
@Marshi
I'm ready to eat all of my words of concern about the Switch, too.
On a silver platter, with a Michaelpacht-cherry on top!
@ceedee
True dat. Remember when games had prerendered backgrounds with 3D hitboxes slapped on them with poor polygonal models thrown in the mix? Yep. The outdoor section of Zelda's Temple Of Time, the mansion of the first Resident Evil, and just about every overworld section of Final Fantasy VII have all aged equally bad.
Yeah, I'm aware this critique partially involves Nintendo games, but hear this - FMVs? Anyone remember those? The porcelain dolls in the old Tekken games' FMVs? Yeah. If developers dropped Nintendo consoles because the Nintendo 64 couldn't handle FMVs... good riddance!
@Ernest_The_Crab I agree completely. In 12-18 months we will see what the developers can really do with the Switch. It is like the 3DS: at the beginning the 3DS games available looked like DS ports even the ones from Nintendo. Then, 1 year later we have Luigi's Mansion 2, I'll dare say one of the pinnacles of the graphics on the 3DS.
I just pointed out that yes, there is a difference, difference that won't stop me from buying the game as soon as I checked NL's review.
@The-Chosen-one
Because I'm the gifbringer of the site. Deal with it!
@The-Chosen-one It looks rather good!! Just a bit of slowdown there and there. On the Switch's screen it will look great but not so much on a TV, even at 1080p (which I doubt they'll be able to deliver).
@Arehexes Going to be harder to convince Laptops that can play steam ports of PS4/XBONE games to get the Switch.
(My laptop is just under the minimum specs to play Dragon Quest Heroes)
@Azikira Yup ^^ I was living and working in Japan. So I'm also japanese speaker and I have friends that can buy and send me games from there ;P (My English is what I need to brush up )
Of course, I think like you too !! But there are a special case: DQX, whitch is a MMO and need to regconize the region's IP of the consoles for let you use his server And If these games have some kind of on-line multiplayer, or others special devices, probably we couldn't use it at 100% for the same reason... I guess
PS: I hope I'm wrong about this
@KirbyTheVampire The Switch version looks a lot like the Vita version of the game, though. A handheld from 2011.
In comparison, that's like Link Between Worlds looking like Phantom Hourglass or Spirit Tracks and still saying that's still good for a handheld title.
To be fair, I'm on the side admitting this might just be a lazier port. For sure it's more powerful than the VIta. I personally think BOTW looks very pretty on the Switch.
@AlexSora89
Haha! Keep em coming! i love the gif image of Zelda by the way
@maceng
yeah i noticed as well, but it does look beautiful and that for a portable console. I seriously will take it with me when going to work lol, just genius this console.
@Turbo857 Of course I'm not forgetting it, but keep in mind that you're mentioning handheld consoles, and for some reason Nintendo was able to offer something different that people liked even with inferior graphics, whereas the competition tried to beat Nintendo with powerful systems that didn't have enough worthy games and/or whose battery life was awful.
In home consoles' case, and especially nowadays, what most people mind is power and graphics. Of course marketing has its hand in it, otherwise PlayStation brand wouldn't have had the success it has consistently had.
Waiting for the graphics and hardware sycophant white knights grabs popcorn
@The-Chosen-one
If only I could find a GIF of Zelda crying... oh well, I guess a static image does the trick as well.
Maybe it's just me but the Switch screenshots look like an N64 game in comparison to PS4.
@bitleman #5 what the heck are you talking about?
You are so biased you see Sony ghosts everywhere..... Lol
I'm still gonna double dip for Switch & PS4.
"Ermagad!! There's lez poligons so Nintnedoomed!111"
Sarcasm aside, I'm sure this will be a dealbreaker for many people unfortunately. I'd be mad if gameplay was sacrificed, but I digress.
@BiasedSonyFan Well, most gamers are idiots. News at eleven.
In all seriousness, I'm well aware of that, but I don't see what it has to do with the point I was making.
...those weren't exactly fair comparisons. Heck, they weren't exactly good screenshots...whatever, it's a Musou game, performance and enemy count matters more than textures. It's never been the most detailed game, but it sure as hell knows how to handle handle having a lot of stuff on-screen at once. If that takes a hit, then I'll be worried.
@BiasedSonyFan Oh, optimizing on PS3. I see what you mean, but you and I know that it would kill the sales of the game entirely. I mean, as blind as certain users might be, the fidelity leap between version was already pushing it. Imagine if something like MGSV was downgraded to look like, I don't know, Oblivion.
I watched that whole gameplay and the game looks good. I never played that game but I just might have to now.
Editing my comment cuz I think I'm being to negative. probably tired. carry on.
In the top picture I really see very little difference aside from particle effects. Is the portal activated in the bottom screenshot? It might be simply down to that. Certainly the 360/PS3 can handle particle effects to a degree and the Switch is more powerful than those consoles.
As for the bottom picture I'm not sure what we're supposed to be looking at because there doesn't seem to be two of the exact same thing but am I to take it it's the windows? Yes there are fewer polygons in the bottom picture but in the portal picture the game didn't seem incapable of rendering circular objects. Are we sure we're looking at the same windows? I really can't tell. There's too much menu garbage/character in the way. But neither look bad (for what we can SEE of them).
At any rate the graphics don't really seem to be that much worse. Yes, it's noticeable, but how noticeable is it going to be on a 6-inch screen at 720p versus your 72-inch 4K television? The consoles are built for different purposes. As long as all the content is there, I'm happy.
@Ichi-Tan I'm hoping that Dragon Quest MMO does come over here in the US (since I don't know a lick of Japanese... Sadness.). I've been looking forward to it ever since I found out about it, and I almost got it on my Japanese 2DS but I heard it was plagued with performance issues because the game streaming is too much for the system to handle.
Ummm they both look pretty awesome to me. Games on Dreamcast still look good, games on gamecube and Wii still look good. Games on ps2 still look good. Games on Nintendo DS still look good. well I guess thats enough. Graphics have gotten so good on all these systems is it that big of a deal? Wait mines bigger that your! I think thats what it comes down too. Being a Nintendo fan since pretty much around the time of the Wii I have missed out on alot not owning every system. But ive had my fun. Im hoping Switch will see some games that go to PS4 and Xbox and that we are not being fed a pack of lies about all these 3rd party devs signing up for Switch. But im sticking with switch and hoping that a Nintendo home console will load up on the RPG's like the 3ds did. I do have this stinky feeling nintendo is going to screw up online beyond belief. We should already be playing Dragon Quest X in Europe and North america. As many people that bought Wii in North America come on man!
Underpowered....
Some more basic textures and less dynamic lighting. If that is the only difference and performance is roughly similar I think it'll be absolutely fine.
One huge thing that everyone is forgetting is that the Nintendo Switch won't have any install times or any annoying 3-hour updates like on the PS4 and Xbox One.
@G-Boy Graphically..... no it wasn't. it was basically a gamecube in terms of graphical output.
However, in terms of what it did actually bring to the table over the gamecube far outweighs what pathetic offering the PS4 presents. The Wii brought a full online experience, downloadable games, the virtual console, full online gaming, full motion controls and a level of interaction with your games that had never been seen before, hence the ridiculous sales numbers.
By comparison, the PS4 from the PS3 is the same jump as the Wii from the Gamecube except the Wii brought s tonne load more than slightly better graphics, a share button and the full removal of backwards compatibility.
@Mellor2000 Sly insults are no more acceptable than direct insults around here. Comment deleted. Please play nice.
@Azikira Yeah !! That's true !! My japanese friends tolds to me the same. Not only about 2DS, 3DS was the same and New it's a little bit better but not solved the trouble at 100% Really.
And I'm with you too A English version and server for all western regions for everybody plays together would be just perfect for us and all the DQ series fans
If they do that, I'll buy switch day one !! On-line services will be paymented after all, so they must to do it soon or later, if they acting logically :S
@Ichi-Tan I'd hate to sound redundant at this point, but there's nothing really exciting (for me) in the Launch window besides Zelda, so seeing full on Dragon Quest support will instantly make me happier about getting the system Day 1.
@Azikira Oh !! My fault I meant launch day of DQX with westerns regions servers open when I wrote "Day one". I was talking about these game, not the switch.
For me, the switch, it's same like you at this moment: Not really a great game from thrid partys, or even first party, and about Zelda, I have a Wii U
Every third party and Nintendo is doing the same than Square-Enix for now. No Final fantasy, not Kingdom hearts, no Dragon quests supported in westerns regions, but I'm Setsuna... ¬¬ Of course I know the future will be better, but now, switch only have the garbage games of a lot of companies. MK8DX And Splatoon 2 is too much similar than the Wii U version, so don't count for me like good games "of switch"
@JLPick Yeah this is totally Nintendo fault if japanese games are selling terribly on PS4.
@AlphaJaguar undocked.
@bitleman Not too bad...Dragon Quest Heroes on PS4 and Akiba's Trip Undead And Undressed sold pretty good on PS4...other than that, it seems that the Japanese games sell better on portables...and that seemed to be the VITA, where 3DS seemed to be left out, which I never got, because 3DS had more buyers than the VITA. Hopefully, nintendo can get these companies back with them, even though I don't mind them being on Playstation either (sorry to say, I love both companies, somehow equally anymore). I just want an abundance of games on the Switch if I'm going to purchase it, and not the abundance that the Wii got...I don't want cheap party and cheap cartoony titles, I'd like the nice titles that it should deserve...guess that's kind of why I'm not purchasing a Switch until closer to the holiday or beyond...close to tax returns of 2018 probably, at least when more is out.
@JLPick The 3DS has been "left out" (lol) because it's getting all the big games. Shovelwares developpers prefer the Vita because they don't have any competition. And they still sell terribly. I haven't bought a Vita game since 2 years because how terrible the quality of the games is. But as long as the resolution is superior it means the game is better according to people easy to trick.
I see a difference and quite frankly, i don't care
@bitleman I had a VITA for a year, before I was finding it hard to find any games for it (my area barely has anything for it)...the same is starting to happen to the 3DS, with only some of nintendo's own being in the stores...more Amiibo figures in nintendo's sections than anything else, with Wii games (yup, Wii, not Wii U) coming in second. I still hope Switch gets it all, but I doubt it, as it seems any kind of game is coming to PS4 instead. 3DS, at least what I'm thinking, will probably end at the end of this year...at least with nintendo ending their part in it...I'm thinking that if the Switch sells enough, they'll end their time with the 3DS, focusing more onto the Switch...especially if the user base becomes bigger...sort of like what Sony and Microsoft do with their systems...PS4 has a bigger user base than the PS3, what will Sony focus more on? Kind of why I'm hoping Switch does good, because it really seems like nintendo wants to focus on just ONE system, instead of having their teams work on two...getting rid of droughts. It seems that (during the Wii U and 3DS cycles), if 3DS had a lot of games coming to it one year, than the following year was Wii U with barely anything on 3DS...and vice versa...I don't kind of get it, because nintendo has enough money and enough teams to work on a number of titles, but they don't, kind of why I'm hoping the Switch does good...before I even want to think about purchasing one...plus, I also felt left down when I owned the Wii U at launch...got rid of the system a few years ago and do not even miss it.
I think that third party support on NS will be different than what we see on Xone/PS4/PC it will be like is on 3DS and for me is good, a lot of exclusive pieaces of software . And will be SO COOL to play Monster Hunter on the go and than play on my TV when i back to home. If you don´t like/use mobility you are not the main target of the console and you will be more happy with a PS4/Xone/PC but i can't why people have hard time understand this.
@DESS-M-8 is this bait, how can you not see the difference between 25ish unstable fps and almost solid 60fps 1080p
Will definitively pick this one up when it's released in Europe for the Switch. I also sorta noticed that field of debt is actually better on the Switch than the ps4 which is sorta crazy when you think about it, but might be some weird benefit of cartridges or something like that.
