The Media Create charts for Japan are out once again, and this week's line-up has a number of new releases - albeit not on Nintendo hardware.
It's hard to keep track of the Kingdom Hearts series, but that hasn't stopped the oddly named Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8: Final Chapter Prologue from moving to number one on PS4. The arrival of Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony on PS Vita and PS4 has also pushed long-running 3DS sellers Pokémon Sun and Moon, Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS and Yo-kai Watch 3 down a few places, though these titles are still moving along rather well. The top 20, with lifetime sales in brackets, is below.
- [PS4] Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8: Final Chapter Prologue (Square Enix, 01/12/17) – 137,797 (New)
- [PSV] Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony (Spike Chunsoft, 01/12/17) – 76,166 (New)
- [PS4] Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony (Spike Chunsoft, 01/12/17) – 40,006 (New)
- [3DS] Pokemon Sun / Pokemon Moon (Nintendo, 11/18/16) – 31,656 (3,071,241)
- [3DS] Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS (Nintendo, 12/01/16) – 23,845 (914,683)
- [3DS] Yo-kai Watch 3: Sukiyaki (Level-5, 12/15/16) – 23,192 (608,398)
- [3DS] Momotaro Dentetsu 2017: Tachiagare Nippon! (Nintendo, 12/22/16) – 16,732 (261,089)

- [PS4] SG/ZH School Girl/Zombie Hunter (D3 Publisher, 01/12/17) – 8,439 (New)
- [3DS] Miitopia (Nintendo, 12/08/16) – 7,334 (152,172)
- [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Welcome Amiibo (Nintendo, 11/24/16) – 6,410 (107,764)
- [PSV] Valkyrie Drive: Bhikkhuni Bikini Party Edition (Marvelous, 01/12/17) – 5,078 (New)
- [PS4] Yakuza 6: The Song of Life (Sega, 12/08/16) – 5,064 (331,388)
- [Wii U] Minecraft: Wii U Edition (Mojang, 06/23/16) – 4,940 (275,984)

- [PS4] Battlefield 1 (EA, 10/21/16) – 4,647 (249,053)
- [3DS] Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball Heroes (Konami, 12/15/16) – 3,714 (77,274)
- [PS4] Resident Evil 6 (Capcom, 12/01/16) – 3,272 (28,196)
Moving on to hardware, numbers are dropping back to standard levels after Holiday and New Year bumps, leaving the PS4 on top. The New 3DS LL (XL) and broader 'family' are still comfortably second, while the Wii U returns to rather grim figures; results are below with last week's sales in brackets.
- PlayStation 4 – 39,116 (78,927)
- New 3DS LL – 23,212 (54,645)
- PlayStation Vita – 13,816 (34,023)
- 2DS – 9,243 (26,214)
- PlayStation 4 Pro – 7,887 (8,242)
- New 3DS – 2,091 (8,019)
- Wii U – 1,169 (3,147)
- PlayStation 3 – 701 (1,156)
- Xbox One – 75 (180)
The evergreen releases will fly the flag, for the most part, on behalf of Nintendo over the next month or so. It'll be interesting to see how new releases up to early March perform on 3DS, ahead of the Nintendo Switch making its mark.

Eat PS4 Up, Spit PS4 Out !

DANGANRONPA! iwontimportiwontimportiwontimportiwontimport.
Also 75 MS?! 75...just...just stop.
I think it's becoming quite clear that Sun and Moon aren't going to match X and Y in sales despite there being nearly double the 3DS units out there compared to 2013. Something to chew over for those that think Nintendo on mobile is purely in order to promote their dedicated games.
Here's hoping 3DS sales translate to Switch sales in Japan. Then again, the portable Switch is a bit unwieldy, isn't it?
I am a maniac for Kingdom Hearts so I'm so happy that's it's number 1.
Big drop off for Wii U. Well big for its small number. It was bound to happen following the Switch presentation. Wouldn't be surprised if it's <1,000 next week.
Actually, everything is down. It was a double edged sword for Nintendo showing off the Switch properly.
Um...Kingdom Hearts series start to make me... Bored.
I mean the storyline. Too.... long. Too... complicated. Why didn't ended for good ?
I found myself neglected my Kingdom Heart 3DS due to lack of desire.
So...any info on when the PokeBank update is going to drop?
Not bad, while the Japanese market is a lot different to the US/UK market, I think it's promising that Nintendo is managing to make some good money in their home territory.
Also interesting to consider that if the Switch fails, will Nintendo really become an independant developer.. or will they retreat back to Japan & not bother with rolling out expensive hardware/development costs needed to release into the West?
Pokémon Sun/Moon games are doing well, while the sales aren't as strong as X/Y, this isn't exactly that comparable. X/Y was the first 3DS Pokémon game and had a massive step-change in graphics/mechanics. While Sun/Moon brings some changes... you can't exactly say it's a revolution & had ORAS on the 3DS to temper expectations.
A Switch Pokémon game would likely be a big seller once the Switch's player base is a bit larger.
that xbox one numbers tho...
@Peach64 Expectations for a Switch port/same generation game may have also hurt sales.
Also, didn't they say in a shareholders' meeting that Pokémon Go wouldn't really affect their profit?. The share price dropped considerably after that statement. Doesn't sound like the kind of thing you would tell (or want to tell) your investors if you really believed that a release would increase your profits.
GTA V is so amazing. It keeps on selling. The multiplayer is off the wall on that one.
@thesilverbrick Not unwieldy for Japan!
@Anti-Matter Kingdom Hearts is primarily a Sony franchise. All the games that have come to Nintendo are the side-games. And even so, the compilations are on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4.
@Anti-Matter Same here, after KHII the only one to really grab me was Birth By Sleep. Also i think I may have to replay the main ones on PS3 to review the story.
My biggest issue was why SE were always intent on having us play the "younger Sora" when he looked and sounded better in KHII. That was one of my main gripes with the 3DS game and why I've barely played it.
With the Vita and 3DS both still selling ok in Japan I wonder how fast they will be to buy up the Switch? I guess they'll need to for Spla2oon, I wonder if they'll wait for it in hopes of getting a bundle?
Wii U had many more bundles in Japan than it got in the west.
@Anti-Matter hell yeah! Soon Switch will it out & bring the fly's out!
Resident Evil 6 on there? Must be giving them away!!
@AlphaJaguar you got that right. That is why we should not expect a real main story line to land on any Nin system. If it does its because the story series had ended & they will just release old ports on a Nin system to try & get more sales. But I'm not buying into years of old ports.
Not surprised by a drop. While I'm sure the 3ds will continue to sell fine at least to the Switch's release in Japan with how hard it is for consoles right now + the next new one coming in less than two months + the wiiu being the wiiu = the wiiu basically being more dead than before.
@CGSasuke No profanity, thanks.
Can't wait for Kingdom Hearts 2.8 and Danganronpa V3!
Cannot wait to play KH 2.8 especially to play 0.2.
@Anti-Matter Well a lot of franchises get ported, enhanced and remade over and over the same way as KH (cough Zelda cough) yet people still buy the same games though it's understandable why one would easily get bored of it. I only played the DS version (365/2 days) and now I picked Drop Dream Distace and I like it so far. Too bad there won' be a new KH on 3DS :-/ (at least I didn't heard of any).
By the way, I'm glad N3DS XL still rocks the charts. Would be great if we got Danganronpa 3 (or any in the series) on Switch though
Can't wait for Dangan V3. As my icon implies, I'm a huge fan of the series.
@Peach64 Sun/Moon sold about 10m units in the first month, it took X/Y several months to reach the same number, after four weeks it sold about 6.5m. Granted, X/Y came out a month earlier than S/M, but still, Sun/Moon is still selling.
What's ironic are the PS4 vs. PS4 Pro numbers. Guess Japan doesn't care about specs as much as the west does.
Also, I look forward to the Switch outselling the PS4 in Japan
And for a moment the thumbnail made me think the long overdue Bank update was coming for good. Dammit Tom!
Is it me or is the Vita doing great numbers? I had a look at a YouTube video of top 20 games coming to the Vita this year. Looked good. Must dust mine off and give it some love this year. Only have final fantasy and uncharted on the poor thing lol.
@Anti-Matter A mind is a terrible thing to waste...
@TheLZdragon The console market in itself is much smaller in Japan. The Pro is more of a luxury item vs a must have iteration. For the folks who want to buy into the console's ecosystem they obviously go for the cheaper Slim model logically speaking
Wow, look at Xbone O.O
Why are people still buying the Vita?
@PipeGuy64Bit Because it has games they want to play.
Thats a great list of quality games if ever I seen one. Hopefully Yo-Kai Watch makes the move to Switch.
