This one NEEDS to happen, and it NEEDS to turn out good for the sake of the whole genre.
A shmup with pretty much the most recognizeable name in the genre, a spaceships VS aliens theme and actually current gen graphics in retail shelves could FINALLY get the mainstream audience interested again.
I mean, people do buy games with 2d gameplay at retail, just look at NSMB, Kirby, Mega Man 11, Street Fighter 4&5 and Mortal Kombat 9-11. If it can work for platformers and fighting games, why not for shmups?
@Abeedo @DenDen @Bondi_Surfer @John_Deacon @Bunkerneath I agree it's stupid to use the animated opening movie as a trailer for a shmup, but at least it's easy to look up gameplay videos of Caladrius Blaze on YouTube.
@Peterjr1 You need to let go of your prejudice for this one. I can't deny that there are many mediocre to bad games that try to attract people with sex or extreme violence, but Caladrius Blaze is a great shoot'em up from one of the most famous shmup developers.
I've already preordered Raiden V and Psikyo Shooting Library Vol. 1&2. I'll also preorder Caladrius Blaze as soon as i know for sure what options i have with that one, so far only Asian version has been confirmed, i'd prefer s western version.
I also really want MUA3, but i think i'll get that one later down the road.
On a sidenote, i noticed NL put some August titles in this list. Unser these circumstances, they should have also included Arcade Love Plus Pengo!, which is a very important release in my opinion because it's the first Switch game from shmup development legends Triangle Service.
A physical version with the DLC on the card would be nice.
Anyway, Arcade Love Plus Pengo! from Triangle Service (Trizeal, XII Stag...) being available for preorder on Play-Asia is the most important piece of shmup news today in my opinion.
@Spiders PC was a home for the games, but a graveyard for the developers. Treasure ported the 360 Version of Ikaruga to Steam, yet didn't bother porting 360 Radiant Silvergun and were in horrible condition afterwards. Cave brought some of their games and now Cave is as good as dead. The ex-Cave developers at Tanoshimasu (Aka to Blue) actually talked about how PC support was a commercial failure. Moss had to cripple the PC version of Caladrius with DRM to fight the rampant piracy in the platform. When that lead to complaints, they crippled Raiden V with stupid online features that are supposed to work as "stealth DRM".
New shmups like R-Type Final 2 or high quality ports like what M2STG does are only profitable if there is an audience that is willing to pay reasonable prices for it. The Steam audience always waits for a crazy "70% Off" sale in those cases.
Simple, barebones ports/emulations of older shmups (like Hamster's Arcade Archives series or most or Zerodiv's Psikyo games on Switch) don't sell at all on PC because PC users can get "similar" quality from emulating pirated ROMs for free.
I hope there will be something about Arcade Love Plus Pengo! from the legendary shmup developers at Triangle Service (Trizeal, XIIStag, DeltaZeal...). The game definitely deserves some attention.
Seeing some Radirgy Swag footage would be nice, too.
Hmmm, NintendoLife reviewing games they somehow didn't review when they originally came out... I hope this means Quad Fighter K and Sisters Royale still have a chance to get the review they deserve!
@ryobi85 To also give some recommendations, the very best are Psyvariar Delta and Darius Cozmic Collection in my opinion, however, both are imports.
Otherwise, i definitely recommend to get some Psikyo games; Strikers 1945 I&II, Gunbird 1&2, Tengai, Zero Gunner 2, Dragon Blaze.
From the Neo Geo Arcade Archives series, i'd recommend Blazing Star. Aero Fighters 2&3 and Strikers 1945 Plus (a remix of 1945 II) are good, too. Last Resort and Pulstar are good and very similar to R-Type, but i have to warn you - these 2 are VERY hard. Not to offend anyone, but Alpha Mission II is pretty bad in my opinion (very convoluted item system) and Ghost Pilots is just ok, it's not bad, but there are about 25 better shmups on the Switch.
I personally also like RXN -Raijin- a lot, but the game is a bit controversial because of it's different structure (many very short stages instead of fewer but longer ones, you get to level up your ships...)
If you want some Bullet Hell, you can't go wrong with Danmaku Unlimited 2, and, if you have a JP eShop account Sisters Royale and Rolling Gunner.
It's true that it's the weakest entry in it's series as far as level design is concerned, and some of the new features are pretty questionable. However, i think it's nice to have a shmup that feels clearly like a full-featured current gen release with a proper budget.
So, yes, i'm not really as hyped for this as i am for ESP Ra De, Strikers 1999, Strikers 2020, R-Type Final 2, Vasara 1&2 or Radirgy Swag, but i'll pick it up anyway.
So, is this about the US release or about EU/UK? I'm wondering if i should preorder the US version from Play-Asia, or If i should wait for a EU version to show up on Amazon Germany.
Amazing news, and so shortly after Switch doing well in the R-Type Final 2 poll, announcement of the brand new Strikers 2010 and a Cotton remaster, reveal of Radirgy Swag release date...
@masterLEON People really shouldn't be so harsh on Rainbow Cotton. Yes, the one big flaw of how the whole character always recenters in the middle of the screen (as opposed to Star Fox better system where the aiming reticule centers in front of the ship) damages the game a lot. But otherwise it's really good, with great stage and enemy design, outstanding graphics (which also aged well) and good music. Lol, i'm literally defending a game with bad controls...
@NinChocolate A new Radirgy game named Radirgy Swag is on the way too.
I'm glad we got another great import review from Kerry, i hope she becomes a regular Here on NL. The scoring is a bit harsh in my opinion, but the game definitely has a lot of flaws.
Darius Cozmic Collection and Sisters Royale next please!
Exxcellent list! I'm glad you include Psyvariar Delta and Darius Cozmic Collection, because those are really the best shmups on the Switch in my opinion.
The only inclusions i disagree with are Galak-Z, Graceful Explosion Machine and Steredenn (however, i realize Steredenn is very popular). I'd have chosen Black Bird, Sisters Royale, Omega Force or Rolling Gunner instead.
@NGDEV Well, the Switch has build itself a good reputation as a shmup console (Darius Cozmic Collection, RXN -Raijin-, Sisters Royale, Rolling Gunner, Black Bird, Strikers 1945 series, Gunbird series, Samurai Aces series, Dragon Blaze, Thunder Force IV/Lightening Force...).
I think your shmups Fast Striker and Neo XYX would fit really well on the system.
@belmont A poll like this absolutely makes sense, certainly more then adding platforms as stretch goals to a kickstarter in random order.
And no, this game shoud not be on all platforms, that's a completely unreasonable demand. This is a niche game by a small team with small ressources. The developers should focus on bringing it to the platforms where people are actually willing to buy the game (PS4 and Switch) and ignore those platforms where it would sell very few units (Xbox) or only sell at a heavily reduced price (Steam).
I'm glad the Switch is doing well on the polls, the PS4 obviously has a bit of an unfair advantage because the game was originally announced for PS4 (or at least that was how everyone reported on that announcement).
Anyway, i hope they don't waste their time with Xbox and Steam.
They put microtransactions into a 70€ game with a 40€ seasons pass (containing just 6 characters, which will probably be even more expensive if bought separately). Oh, popular character Shao Khan was held hostage as a preorder bonus and now can be bought for 6€.
@Moroboshi876 The western version of the collection only has the western versions of the games, the version on the JP eShop has the JP versions... it would really be better if all versions of the collection came with all versions of the games.
Anyway, the real problem i have with this collection so far is that it seems to be missing tate mode.
@YANDMAN Talking of great compilations, Psikyo Collection Vol. 3 is now available for preorder on Play Asia. Now i just have to decide between it's regular version and the Collector's Edition with the cheesy boob mousepad.

Re: Mega Drive Mini Port Of Darius Is "Totally New" And Not Based On "Fan Work", Says Sega
Qick reminder: The Switch's Darius Cozmic Collection is supposed to get an update this Summer. Maybe we'll also get this version?
Re: R-Type Final 2 Kickstarter Campaign Begins, Already Set To Smash Its ¥45 Million Goal
@Rambler
R-Type Dimensions is just a port of the First 2 games with minor additions.
R-Type Final 2 is a completely new game.
I mean, NSMBUD, Kirby Star Allies and Street Fighter V are/were also full price while older games in those franchises are 5-8$ on Virtual Console.

This is great, but i'll stick with the Arcade version on the Darius Cozmic Collection.

My unrealistic, whishes:
Sin & Punishment 3
F-Zero SX
Solar Striker (new game developed by a shmup developer like 8ing, Triangle Service, Alfa System or Moss)
Re: Sexy Shmup Caladrius Blaze Is Getting An English-Language Release
This is REALLY good, and actually a lot better then Raiden V.
Re: Guide: Upcoming Nintendo Switch Games And Accessories For June And July

It should simply be called Konami Collection Collection.

I'll play some Radirgy in my Dreamcast to warm Up for Radirgy Swag which comes out on the JP eShop next month.
Re: Review: Gunlord X - Top-Notch Old-School Blasting Action
It's really great, i hope we'll see more NG Dev Team games on the Switch soon.

Tecmo Bowl is nice, but they really need to start releaseing the Irem games they keep teasing, particularly the 2 Image Fight games and R-Type Leo.

The Swich is such a great system for classic arcade shooters, i hope i'm not the only one here who has the Darius Cozmic Collection.
