@GetShulked It's generally considered weaker, and i agree with the public opinion on this, BUT this HD remaster is supposed to be more then just the same game with better graphics and actually tries to fix the flaws of the Wii version, which was clearly rushed to meet a release date during launch window.
Excellent news! I'm generally very happy about Taito's recent comeback (Darius Cozmic Collection, Darius on the Mega Drive/Genesis Mini, Space Invaders Invincible Collection, Ninja Warriors).
Nice to see this one getting a review on NL, it definitely deserves some attention. It's a really good fit for the Switch, both because the Switch is the new king of shoot'em ups and because of the great 8 player local multiplayer experience Pengo! provides.
I imported it from Play-Asia when it launced and i'm having a good time with it i personally would rate it 8/10.
I think i'll give this one a chance to support Granzella, i'm very hyped for their upcoming new R-Type.
If i'd enjoy a game like this is hard to estimate for me, but i least i know my money goes towards a company that has something i'm REALLY looking forward to in development.
Eh, Caladrius Blaze is a lot better then Raiden V. I have both games on Switch AND on Steam, and the scores should really be swapped - Caladrius Blaze is a solid 8 while Raiden V is a 7 at best and would still be rated fairly at a 6.
I just hope Dispatch Games will be able to deliver this one and Radirgy Swag on time, those 20 delays for their western release of Psyvariar Delta were ridiculous.
@Totaldude911 I always assumed this would also be the reason why Darius is relatively popular in Japan, but never caught on elsewhere (compared to it's horizontal shmup competitors Gradius, R-Type and Thunder Force)
@Anti-Matter I'm very interested in that arcade fishing game from Namco, let's hope it gets localized.
@MsK Yes, Psyvariar Delta is actually my favourite shmup on the Switch (and PS4), i just didn't mention it because it's basically a remaster and remix of 2 versions of a 20 years old game.
@GFoyle RXN -Raijin- is 16:9 and was developed with that aspect ratio in mind from the ground up. While Radirgy Swag isn't 100% 16:9 because uses relatively slim borders for various information, it's pretty close.
@xxx128 We got some pretty good new releases from teams that have a strong history of developing actual japanese arcade shmups. Try: Radirgy Swag (from the successor team to Milestone, the developers of Radirgy, Karous, Illvelo and Chaos Field, which in turn was a team with former Compile staff that worked on Aleste) Rolling Gunner (former Cave developer involved) Sisters Royale (from Alfa System, developers of Castle of Shikigami trilogy, the game feels like a smaller spinoff compared to the main games, but is good anyway)
Also, Caladrius Blaze and Raiden V (from Moss) and Arcade Love Plus Pengo! (from Triangle Service who made Trizeal, DeltaZeal, XIIStag) are coming soon and are not all that old.
As someone who owns this game on Switch since it's japanese release last year, i have to say that while i mostly agree with the text of this review, i find the score highly problematic.
Psyvariar Delta absolutely deserves a 10/10 in my opinion, and seeing how other shmups scored on NL i really think anything lower then a 9/10 really is misleading people.
I mean, this is the same score the mediocre Q-YO (or whatever it's named, i already forgot) got for being a somewhat working shmup with some humor. Many Psikyo shmups got this score, and while those are roughly on the same level of pure gameplay quality, they are incredibly barebones compared to Psyvariar Delta.
I'm sorry, this is currently the best shmup on the Switch by a landslide, and the text of the review does not seem to disagree, yet the Final score is a 8, while tons of others also got an 8 and some even a 9, this doesn't make sense.
So, where is the Psyvariar Delta review so i can finally see a shmup getting a 10/10 on NintendoLife?
On a sidenote, my second favourite standalone shmup release on Switch (so the collections don't count) is now Radirgy Swag which i got from the JP eShop. It'll get a physical western release later this year.
@Andigaming Actually, Nintendo did not censor any third party games since the Gamecube era.
What they censored during the Wii U days (and would probably still feel free to censor) are western versions of their own first party games, which is a separate issue
Glad to see this list was updated to include the new king of shmups on the Switch, Rolling Gunner.
However, NintendoLife should really also give some attention to Quad Fighter K and the 2 excellent japanese eShop exclusives Sisters Royale and Radirgy Swag.
Pretty awesome collection, but i really hope they make Contra Collection 2 with Shattered Soldier, Neo Contra, Rebirth and Hard Corps Uprising. All those later games, particularly the PS2 games SS and Neo were just as good as the originals, but sadly few people gave them a chance after getting burned by the 2 outsourced PS1 stinkers Legacy of War and C: The Contra Adventure.
On a sidenote, it's interesting how the interview with the director of Contra III and Hard Corps foreshadows the new Contra game that got announced at E3, Rogue Corps. It's not only that he says he's back in Game development. He also mentions that he worked on the Turtles Games, and the new game has some Turtles refferences (the Krang-like alien in the female character's stomach and throwing enemies at the screen. Also, he mentions he recently found out Contra is popular in China, and now the new game has a Panda character.
Anyway, i'm very hyped for the new game with the Contra III/Hard Corps/SS/Neo man directing it, despite the obvious lack of budget for the graphics.
Got this when it came out on the JP eShop and will definitely double dip for a physical release. It's really great.
On a sidenote, Radirgy Swag came out on the JP eShop this week, finally a worthy successor to Milestone's classics (Chaos Field/Radirgy/Karous/Illvelo).
@Damo I think this is simply a matter of priorities. I mean, it's clear that because of the mention of Metroid Prime, it can be justified to put an article like this on a Nintendo-centric website.
However, NintendoLife isn't like those blogs (GN, MNN...) that report on anything that is slightly related to Nintendo. There are good Switch games that got little to no coverage on NL, and it's frustrating to see NL reporting on something like this Star Wars game being mildly inspired by a Nintendo game, while good actual Switch exclusives like Quad Fighter K, Radirgy Swag or Sisters Royale get completely ignored.
I mean, yes, Sisters Royale is JP-only, but the Switch is region free, and a new exclusive shmup from the creators of the famous Castle of Shikigami developers is something people should know about, as opposed to that Sonic-themed curry that makes people poop blue (which NL reported on despite the product being JP-only from what i remember).
I hope this success will also encourage other companies to release new shmups in their classic serues. A new Strikers 1945 (2020) is already on the way.

Re: Sonic Will Be A Hidden Playable Character In Super Monkey Ball On Switch
@Gridatttack
Some of the minigames barely worked, these should have been cut. I'm still baffled how many of those made it into the Game.

Re: Reminder: Two More NES Games Hit The Switch, Plus Another Special Version Of Gradius
Hmmm ...
Gradius, Parodius, Otomedius, Darius, Gaplus, Caladrius... Shmup names are the best.
Re: Review: VASARA Collection - A Welcome Pair Of Bullet Hell Curios
Can't wait to try these, but i'm pretty busy these days. I wonder how they stack up compared to Psikyo's shmups.

Re: Review: Caladrius Blaze - A Mechanically Competent Shmup With Gratuitous Presentation
Eh, Caladrius Blaze is a lot better then Raiden V.

Re: Review: Raiden V: Director's Cut - Bullet Hell On A Budget Both Veterans And Noobs Can Appreciate
Eh, this is exactly why Psyvariar Delta should have a 9/10 rating.
It's far superior to Raiden V and many other shmups that got 8/10s on NintendoLife.

Re: Vasara Collection's Physical Switch Release Goes Up For Pre-Order This Week
This is great, particularly so shortly after Caladrius Blaze and close to Raiden V and Arcade Love Plus Pengo! .
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (July 20th)
Played a lot of Caladrius Blaze, awesome game and definitely Moss best shmup.

Re: Video: Raiden V: Director's Cut Treated To A New And Hectic Switch Trailer
On a sidenote, while i wouldn't put it as harshly, YANDMAN is right, Caladrius Blaze (from the same developers) is way better then Raiden V.
Re: Nintendo Download: 27th June (Europe)
I strongly recommend Psyvariar Delta!
It's still the best shmup release on the Switch in my opinion.
Re: Video: Raiden V: Director's Cut Treated To A New And Hectic Switch Trailer
I already have this one and Moss other recent shmup Caladrius Blaze preordered.

I also really liked Get Even, i'm still bitter about the game not getting the physical release that got originally announced.
Re: Contra Rogue Corps Will Kick Alien Butt On Switch This Year
@LaytonPuzzle27
That terrible one wasn't made by Konami, but ousourced to Appaloosa.
Konami later made their own top down Contra, Neo Contra, in 2004 (PS2) and it was very good.
Re: Contra Rogue Corps Will Kick Alien Butt On Switch This Year
Looks very good to me, like a proper successor to Neo Contra. This and NMH III were definitely my highlights of this direct.
Re: Space Invaders: Invincible Collection Is Firing Onto Nintendo Switch
I'm definitely looking forward to this. I hope they'll include at least one of the modern Games, Extreme, Infinity Gene or Get Even.

I need Sin & Punishment 3 and F-Zero SX!
Re: Dandy Dungeon Gives New Meaning To The Term "Fantasy RPG", And It's Out This Month
Black Bird is great and was absolutely worth the price, i'd actually double dip for a physical version.
Replay value is more important then length.

Konami should make a new Gradius.
