Update: And just like that, the campaign has well and truly flattened its initial goal. This means that R-Type Final 2 is now definitely happening, arriving on Nintendo Switch with an estimated launch date of December 2020.
Original Article:
The Kickstarter campaign for R-Type Final 2 is now underway, and wow is it off to a cracking start.
Hoping to see the latest entry in the beloved side-scrolling shooter series be fully realised, the campaign has just one week to raise the necessary funds. By 11th June, the project needs to bring in a whopping ¥45 million (approx. £328,000 / $416,000), which initially sounded like a pretty ambitious figure to aim for. Having checked in on the campaign today, though, we needn't have worried.
At the time of writing, the current total stands at just over ¥37,700,000. Considering it's only been up for a day, we're pretty confident that it'll smash its goal. There are several stretch goals that could also be reached including cross-platform leaderboards, additional subtitles, and reproductions of stages from classic games, so this could get even more exciting as the week goes on.
If you want to follow the campaign's progress, learn more about it, or perhaps even pledge your support, you can do so right here. We'll leave you with this campaign promotional video below.

I don't back kickstarters but this game looks really good.
I still don't quite get the 7 day timer, but the game does look nice. It's a game I can wait for though.
I don't even like this type of game but almost backed it because I am a sucker for Kickstarters
R-Type needs a Kickstarter? Yeah. Right.
£65 for physical switch copy to Uk. I’ll have whatever they are smoking
After supporting Mighty #9 and Shenmue 3. I am done.
One was awful the other not seen the light of day yet. If it gets off the ground I'll buy a copy. Not sure why R-Type now needs crowd funding 🙁
@KingBowser86 @Agramonte Yes, R-Type needs a kickstarter because in this sad day and age shmups are considered niche and since they are not the next AAA "rentable" titles, no publisher show interest in investing into this. Very much the same way Igarashi had to go to Kickstarter to be able to make a new Castlevania.
@Shiryu Yeah, but isn't Raiden still kicking?
no surprise here R-Type has a huge following n for good reason. they have such a loyal gigantic fan base I don't think they will need my contribution
Well it's well on it's way to making it so I do not feel obligated to support it.
@KingBowser86 Raiden V was originally released in 2016, it received average critics and to be honest the fact the game got made at all was nothing short of a small miracle. I don't' even know if at the time the game was profitable, I picked up the game super cheap on Steam just last year and look forward to secure a physical edition of it on the Switch. Ggo up to gamers nowadays and mention Raiden (or Seibu Kaihatsu) and see 99.98% of them replying "The electricity guy from Mortal Kombat?" instead of "That incredible vertical shmups series?" and that is why even the mighty R-Type can only secure funding by asking shmup fans directly for it since 'the middle man' simply doesn't care.
Weird times we live in. Good thing Nintendo's Disney-like clout could let an On-Rails Starfox still happen.
@DockEllisD crazy price and it’s a shame as id have back at normal game price.
57 backed projects and counting, only two were videogames though, but I’m definitely adding this as my 58th.
Digital only, since the shipping is just as much as the entire cost of the game digitally. We’re talking nearly $100 for a physical copy. No thanks, I’ll go digital with this one.
@KingBowser86 shmups are dying. It's either add boobs or to Kickstarter.
I love R-Type, but not going to pay $90. The gameplay looks a bit slow in the trailer as well. I need a browser extension to replace the word “shmup” with “shooter.” It’s no wonder the genre is dying with a name like that!
I’m all in over $100, I want my name in the credits of my favorite shmup ever. It’s already at 90% of its funding goal, so the real question is how many stretch goals does it hit?
This one NEEDS to happen, and it NEEDS to turn out good for the sake of the whole genre.
A shmup with pretty much the most recognizeable name in the genre, a spaceships VS aliens theme and actually current gen graphics in retail shelves could FINALLY get the mainstream audience interested again.
I mean, people do buy games with 2d gameplay at retail, just look at NSMB, Kirby, Mega Man 11, Street Fighter 4&5 and Mortal Kombat 9-11.
If it can work for platformers and fighting games, why not for shmups?
@Rambler
R-Type Dimensions is just a port of the First 2 games with minor additions.
R-Type Final 2 is a completely new game.
I mean, NSMBUD, Kirby Star Allies and Street Fighter V are/were also full price while older games in those franchises are 5-8$ on Virtual Console.
Getting close but I got some other stuff to get so I have to wait til closer to deadline to decide.
$380,730
pledged of $416,648 goal
But since they offer a Physical at $100 with artbook and CD but I'll have to see when it gets closer to June 11.
I do have R-Type from strictly gaming on Order.
@Shiryu You are so wrong. Titles like this do not need crowdfunding. This is just a gimmick to see how many preorders they can get along with how much they can get away without spending to make the game.
As for Igarashi he is not making a new Castlevania. Bloodstained is in no way promoted as a Castlevania and if it was Konami would be publishing it period. Bloodstained is a project that he wanted to work on as a solo dev and might be Castlevaniaish but is far from that. Also that game is nowhere near the price of this R-type crowdfunding.
@EmirParkreiner Those are all AAA games that have a huge huge following that retail at the 60 buck range and the ones that didn't could have easily. R-Type is not one of them.
@Dirty0814 Please kindly prove why I am 'so wrong' since I spoke only of what Granzella publicly stated in the past (check their official Twitter feed).
Also a reminder we are living in the same day and age no publisher had any interest in Bayonetta 2 until Nintendo decided to take on the 'risk' of funding PlatinumGames vision.
Also, you are very correct when you say developers use kickstarter nowadays to judge and prove public interest in a certain kind of games exists. It is much easier then to go and get outside funding from big investors/publishers if they are convinced there is low-risk/high profit to be made.
@Shiryu You clearly didn't read my comment as I already stated how you were wrong.
As for R-Type it is not a game that needs a Kickstarter period. They can get a publisher easy with the title. The pricing for the Kickstarter alone proves that they just want to cash in on the name. It's all about the money which in the end will make for a poor game.
Also Bayonetta would have found a publisher regardless. Nintendo jumped at that one.
The one week thing is really interesting. I wonder if that's there way to try to combat people being interested, but wanting to wait to back it, and then forget. Just doing like a week means you pretty much have to decide to back it right then or it'll be gone. I have super fond memories of working to master R-Type, but I'm not sure if I'm ready to back it. Tempting, but the music in the trailer didn't grab me enough to push me over the edge. They should have put up a sample track to show how awesome the music should be.
@Dirty0814 - where did you get your information that this is simply a gimmick, unless you're just stating an opinion? @Shiryu based his information on the company's past social media accounts. To me, it seems that Irem isn't willing to spend the big bucks to make a new entry, so I say kudos to the development team, who is passionate about the subject, very interested in doing the coding........but lack the funding to do so.
@Dirty0814 I see... so we clearly agree to disagree. I can live with that, can you?
I’d love both R-type tactic games to come over one day though I don’t know how difficult that’d be.
I hope this success will also encourage other companies to release new shmups in their classic serues. A new Strikers 1945 (2020) is already on the way.
Konami should make a new Gradius.
@EmirParkreiner Capcom's, Konami's and even Irem's latest inertia is why these Kickstarters of IP or IP revisions have been successful lately.
With the physical copy being so expensive in USD, no word on whether physical itself is KS-exclusive and several companies like Limited Run Games existing, I'll just wait until December 2020 for the game, but very interested.
Also, if news of Bloodstained's steelbook debacle didn't come to light, I might have backed this immediately. Thanks for the turnabout, 505.
The first stretch goal target has now been reached - this will allow the developers to implement a unified cross-region cross-platform leaderboard.
Well, will definetly pick this one up when it releases, had a great time with R-Type Final back in the day.
Shmup's in the style of R-Type and Axelay are my favorite so the more the merrier. Now how about that Axelay 2, Konami? ^_^
