Note: Nintendo altered the spawn rates of bugs in an update. While it is still possible to 'create' a tarantula island (or a scorpion island, depending on the time of year), an increase in Giant Water Bugs will make it a little more difficult to chase off bugs that you don't want to catch (like Wharf Roaches).
Throw in mosquitos in the summer months and it becomes an even more complicated task — islands without water (bamboo islands) won't attract Water Bugs, of course, so they're probably your best bet.
If you've been reading our Animal Crossing: New Horizons guides for all the best Animal Crossing: New Horizons tips and tricks, you're probably already something of an expert when it comes to earning Bells and reaping the best rewards, but here's something we'd never have dreamt of trying - and probably still won't.
Should you want to infest your game with hundreds of the most terrifying inhabitants available - tarantulas - this little trick will come in super handy. The downside is that you'll be running around screaming for your life for the rest of the day, desperately trying to snag them in your net before they knock you unconscious with their hatred-filled venom, but the plus side is that you can cash them in for a lovely sum. Tarantulas are worth a whopping 8,000 Bells each.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Tarantula Island Guide
How to catch a Tarantula
To catch a Tarantula, you need to be aware. Don't run around the island with your net at the ready as you'll often find that the tarantula spots you before you have a chance to react. If you want to find them without running the risk of getting attacked, put your net away – they will not attack if you're not holding a net.
The moment one spots you with your net, it will turn towards you and raise its legs before dashing towards you. If you don't time the swing of your net just right, it will hit you and stun you, knocking you out in the same way a wasp sting does.
To successfully catch one, approach it slowly with your net held up (you do this by holding down the A button) and wait for it to raise its legs in the attack position. When it does this, stop – the Tarantula will return to its normal pose and you can creep up on it again.
If the worst comes to the worst and the tarantula runs at you, you can – if you're quick enough - run in the opposite direction, put a bit of space between you, and then quickly turn around and swing your net. It's tricky to do, but it is possible.
Another tactic is to dig a series of holes but leave a space in the middle. When you spot a tarantula, jump over the hole and the tarantula won't be able to get you – you can then grab it with a swing of your net.
How to find Tarantula Island
The mystery islands you access through the game's Nook Miles Tickets are entirely random, but one of them is known as Tarantula Island. This island has a massive selection of the six-legged beasts for you to collect – assuming they don't bite you first, of course.
However, while this island appears randomly, it is possible to create your very own Tarantula Island...
How to spawn Tarantulas on a mystery island
Twitter user Voxels provides the following list of steps to make this nightmare come true. Simply head to any island accessible through the game's Nook Miles Tickets, and complete these tasks:
- Nighttime only (past 7PM)
- Chop all trees and remove stumps
- Pick all flowers (pick, not uproot)
- Remove all rocks
- Dump resources on beach
- Clear island of all bugs
One thing to note is that you're not guaranteed to land on a tarantula-spawning mystery island every single time – you might land on one which won't spawn them, so just keep trying until you do.
Other bugs will still spawn and this can limit the number of tarantulas that you see, so you might want to
If you can't find a tarantula on your island, walk around and remove any other bugs that have spawned in the meantime. This isn't a quick process – it sometimes takes a while to completely fill your inventory with tarantulas, so be patient!

Doing all of the steps above will cause the tarantulas to come out in full force, leaving you in a situation like this:
Another Twitter user, kuraine, explains how it all works:
kuraine goes on to say that the main exception to this rule right now are mole crickets, "because once they spawn you have to dig them up or else they’ll never go away".
Another exception is a three-tiered island, which won't spawn any bugs at all – so if you land on that, you're out of luck.
If you have a reasonably clear inventory, you could make between 200,000 and 250,000 Bells per trip to an island – as long as you're prepared to put the time in, that is. Make sure your pockets are as big as possible!
Just to reiterate, this isn't a trick for your own home island, but rather the other islands you can visit through the Nook Miles system. Don't go destroying your lovely home paradise by mistake!
Also, all of the above applies to scorpions, too, so if you're in the 6-month period where tarantulas disappear from the game, you can farm scorpions in exactly the same manner.

Now this is actually very interesting. The fact that environmental factors in AC could ripple through and affect its ecosystem is really impressive.
Is Golden Stag returned ?
At 8000 bells a pop this is a good way to get some fast cash flow if, of course you dont get bit first. Have to walk woth the net out (hold down A) and stop dead when they raise thir fron legs and wait for them to carry on with their business then repeat as you inch closer to them.
@Kidfunkadelic83
I just charge at them, swing my net and hope for the best.
Gonna try this! - I'm already getting braver charging Spiders with my net.
@edhe 😂😂😂
I know what I'm doing tonight then
But if you get attacked by one (repeatedly, which I will) - do you just wake up at the dock?
I don't want to be sent home because of one of them
Far away from the best way get money even now.
@Anti-Matter so soon, I get one, I will tell you.
@NoTinderLife
What are you doing here ? 🤨
Animal Crossing is NOT an RPG game.
Comparing Animal Crossing with RPG game was like comparing two different things with no corelation at all.
Clearly a trolling comment.
@Anti-Matter Just report and move on if you think they are trolling.
I honestly just used the duplication glitch on the tarantula I caught...
@FlashBoomerang what is the best way to get money then? I am struggling to get lots of it to get a bigger house
There's a type of island that automatically spawns a bunch of tarantulas. The island pictured in Zach's Tweet looks to be it, as I remember the central section (where the tarantulas are) being surrounded by a narrow moat.
Pretty cool use of the game mechanics right here.
You could also clone items (even bugs) of you have 2 players (local play, I don't know if online will work).
Place a table, and an item on top. One rotates the table while the other picks up the item and it'll get duplicated (one in player 1s inventory, and the other is still on the table)..... Have multiple switches or tarantulas to sell . (I haven't don't it but I've seen many people post on tik tok)
@Kimyonaakuma Nope, you'll be sent back to that island's dock, but not your own island. You essentially get unlimited tries.
@Ttimer5 and what is the point of the game then? By duping you kill the most important aspect of the game...
It’s nice that there’s no fee when you get taken out by tarantulas. I had a squad of tarantulas that spawned near the docks on one island I visited...
For the record, have just tried this and as far as I can tell it doesn’t work.
Also tried, did not work for me
Interesting but I won’t be doing this as it feels like a cheat to me. I have planted a ton of peach trees however.
Update: The money is just resting in my account.
Small note for y’all
This appears to be seasonal so southern hemisphere won’t get it yet.
Also some islands just don’t spawn bugs, so don’t stress if nothing happens. Gather the resources and move onto another island
I'm trying this out right now and I completely regret my decision. One snuck up on me and I literally screamed at the top of my lungs.
can i do this an one of the island getaway tickets? the islands are randomly generated, so who cares what happens to them? right? unless a glitch occurs and it becomes the only island that you can travel to...(including flights that you may try to make to a friend's island.)
or do i have to destroy my very own island that i am working so hard on?
@xpromisedx
I guess to pay off loans quicker I guess.
It's the similar thing with new leaf and the summer island and farming for sharks.
It's a glitch that will most definitely get fixed come next patch (similar to how Smash bros with 2 isabel's making assist trophies appear forever)
Yeah that's gonna be a real big NOPE!
Didn’t work. Time and nook miles wasted!
Worked for me, but I am not sure it is worth. Just make sure there isn't any other bugs present on the island (Those bugs that spawn on those beach rocks were the real problem as they spawn frequently). Once you catch or scare away any bugs, it should force spawn a Tarantula somewhere on the island.
I just tried this and it certainly does work, but there are some things to keep in mind. It takes a good amount of time to set up. About half an hour spent just prepping the island. You'll also still get other bug spawns. I had to scare away a lot of regular ground bugs, and mole crickets were the bane of my existence. It can take a few laps before a tarantula spawns so patience is key. Also, an island with multiple elevations can be a pain when you have a spawn spot where they just run into a wall most of the time since the wall can block the net. I had a more fishing focused island that did spawn a small number of bugs so my spawn rates weren't the greatest. I imagine if I had gotten an island that didn't normally spawn bugs at all then I wouldn't have seen any so that's another thing to keep in mind.
It's a really nifty trick, but I don't see me doing it much more than this one time. It's a bit grindy for my taste.
This works. I started clearing land and the creepy crawlies started spawning. Got bit a lot but left rich.
Edit: actually I think I hit tarantula island. Also ima need a meeting for arachnophobia. Hi my name is Ryu and I’m terrified of spiders even though I know they are helpful hunters.
Edit part 2: Yep had a nightmare about being killed by arachnids.
@stevenw45
This will come as a shock, but if you actually read the article you will find the answers to your questions!
Just tried this and it didn't work for me. Removed everything and dropped the resources by the beach but nothing spawned. It only removed all non-water spawns from the island, so nothing but fish appeared.
@DinnerAndWine
it was a bit of a rhetorical question. the whole "tarantula" thing makes you skip over the words"any island". picturing the invasion of the tarantulas is better than the reality of your character being tortured. what a fun nightmare.
do you or anyone else know of a way (or) two to trick other creatures to come out from hiding and attack. it would be nice to be able to select my attacker. either way, i have to capture and bring over a tarantula to the museum.
While I did get several tarantulas, mole crickets kept ruining my hunt!
There is definitely something weird with the tarantulas. I got bit by at least 6 in a couple hours on my island, and another one in one of the mile ticket islands.
Yea this definitely works. First island I tried it on I could force spawn tarantulas. As some people have said run to the flat rocks on the beach and scare away any other bugs. It does take some time but was a neat trick.
I'm on day 5 and I still haven't seen any tarentula anywhere and I'm very grateful for it. I could use the cash-in money though.
Trying this out now, just for funsies. It's a cool theory, but it doesn't work quite as well as the article implies. You get a decent amount of tarantulas, but many more wharf roaches and unfortunately, tiger beetles can spawn without any parent objects so long as there's land.
Spider Island is a different beast from this, to be clear. Using a Nook miles ticket at night gives you a random chance of going to specific special islands, one of which features a moat with a smaller clump of land littered with ore boulders and guarded by tons of tarantulas. It's very deliberate, not randomized, and has been recorded by tons of different players by now.
This glitch is cool to go for, but the time it takes to pull off doesn't reward you with much. Wandering around trying to get them to spawn takes a good while. You could be up pretty late if you tried to fill your inventory this way.
As others have mentioned, this article does a horrible job at explaining how to get this to work.
First, this works best on a flat island without too many cliffs. If you spawn one of those places, return to your main island, get a new ticket, and try again.
Do this around 730-8pm, at a time when there are no butterflys. Just ground insects.
Clear off the island as stated, then begin to just run laps. Go to the rocky cliffs on the coast to scare away wharf roaches, and run around the rest of the island chasing away everything else. Eventually a tarantula will appear, catch it, and then run more laps scaring away useless bugs until another appears.
I cleared two Islands, and to max out on tarantulas each time (just counting time to catch them) took about 35-40min. So count on spending around an hour total in clearing an island/catching all tarantulas.
Another thing. The poorly worded article makes it seem like there are several tarantulas crawling around the island. This is not true. I think in the nearly 2hrs I spent on two islands, maybe three times there were 2 tarantulas on screen at once. Usually one single tarantula appeared every minute or two, but that involved me constantly running loops on the map scaring away the other insects.
I decided to try it out and it definitely worked. It took a couple hours of work, but seeing as I earned nearly 200,000 bells, the time spent feels appropriate. Quick note, before you put all the work into doing this make sure the island actually has bugs in the first place. My wife tried the same tactic but didn't realize till after she put all the work in that the island didn't have any bugs.
@DinnerAndWine We need this as an edit to the main article. Nintendolife has gotten so clickbaity it's unreal.
@CairiB Agreed. It does work in spawning tarantulas for sure, but I also had to deal with endless mole crickets, which are ridiculously difficult to find and do not go away under any circumstances other than digging in the right spot to find it. I spent an hour dealing with those on a nice small, flat island and found three tarantulas and more than triple that in mole crickets. Pain in the rear and definitely not worth the time - grow non-native fruit on your island instead

@xpromisedx Some more days playing and you will find it by yourself. I forgot I beggined a little before.
@FlashBoomerang what do you mean? I dont know what you refer your reply to haha
Am intrigued - will this still work, now that tarantulas no longer appear in the northern hemisphere? Have tried twice to no avail and gave up after realising that tarantulas wouldn't appear until Nov - wll this still work?
