If you've played an Animal Crossing game before, you'll know the opening phases of the game can be a little slow at times. You often have to go the extra mile to get ahead early on and in the latest release Animal Crossing: New Horizons it's no different.
If you take a quick look over on social media, you can see a lot of players are spending their time hoarding bugs and marine life while they wait for Blathers to arrive or for the construction of the island museum.
As you can see, it's got to the point where entire islands are literally a dumping ground for insects and sea creatures. If there's one takeaway from this, it's that you can at least stack the cages, crates, and tanks on top of each other to save some space – alternatively, you could put them in storage.
Is your island looking familiar to the images above? Tell us below.

Are these people catching a ton more bugs and fish than me? I unlocked the museum pretty quickly.
I definitely thought about this, but I'm a filthy casual, so I ate some food, played some FFVII and went to sleep.
But I caught like, ten things I couldn't donate to Blathers until today, from yesterday. Would be hard to find enough unique bugs and fish.
Okay that first pic almost looks like a big city or something. lol
I never played a mainline AC game before and I have no idea how they are doing that. I played for about 2 hours day 1 and 4 hours day 2 and my house and museum I was told would arrive tomorrow.
I have shown off a butterfly or 2 but that's the extent of it.
And I caught this fish. Don't worry about Gulliver, his radio is fixed.

@kickyring Yea, right?
At 5 am today my museum will be open.
I am in the same boat! I will have to wait a couple days before it is completely finished!
I’ve mostly been putting bugs and fish in the storage, lol. Finally caught a tarantula, those darn things sneak up on me after I run past a tree. I’ll have the museum up and running soon and I collected all the wood stuff for shop. Fun game
I'm not looking forward to how long it's gonna take to give them all to Blathers one by one when my museum finally opens tomorrow.
1) Enter your tent/house
2) Press Right
3) Store your bugs/fish
Denoobification complete.
I mean... storage is a thing.
But this is kinda funny.
My pile wasn't nearly that big, but I did have a decent collection sitting outside the museum tent this morning. Anything Blathers didn't take went into my shiny new storage to give me more Nook Miles. The museum is always one of my favorite places, so I'm really looking forward to filling it up.
@Silly_G By the time my house was complete and I had access to storage I already had so many that the effort to move them didn't seem worth it.
@BenAV Thankfully the Museum lets you multi-donate after the main building is completed.
@SolarisPolaris Good to know. That'll make life a lot easier.
I've just been selling them off until the museum is open.
What a thrilling game lol
This game feels like a mobile game. I'm not sure if it's a compliment or not, since mobile games have mastered how to timekill but at some point it starts getting super repetitive and like you're doing chores. Better to play in very small sessions.
Definitely also doing this aha
Just selling mine. Halfway to paying off my mortgage and the house isn't even built!
I didn’t know you could put them on the ground like that. Back to fishing then...
@SolarisPolaris "Thankfully the Museum lets you multi-donate after the main building is completed"
But do you still get to hear what Blathers has to say about each of your donations? Because if you don't, then I'll have to stick to single donations. I love his ramblings way too much!
@ChoZanWan yeah same here. I saved a couple I thought might be rare but I’m pretty sure the things I caught on day 1 will turn up again before too long
@ATaco Have you not played AC before? Yes, the game isn't really something you can play all day, unless you're into time travelling.
Is this the equivalent of hamstering toilet paper in a video game?
I have a few stored in my house waiting for tomorrow but nothing too drastic, this is a game I'll be playing for many many months or years so I'm not in too much of a rush so catch everything now
I only keep one of a kind to donate it to blathers. The rest is ruthlessly sold!
The wildlife looks truly amazing in this game. Nintendo is the best at detail.
I just put all mine in storage. But today's a new day and the museum should be done now. Time to donate it all!
@Kochambra
There is another option in his menu choices, allowing for past donation ramblings, if you multi-donated.
I just time travelled to get the museum open quicker to be honest. I'm really going to miss things like swimming in the ocean, collecting all the fruits that this game is missing, and taking a ride with Kapp'n while he sings me a song.
@Finlderp I did that as well. I am only going to time travel when there is a building that get completed the next day. Time travel is so much easier and so much less punishing in this game. The game doesn't check for time changes after you start up the game. You can change the date forward after the game is closed, and when you have to listen to Nook's ramblings, change the date back. The game doesn't ever believe you time traveled at all, when normally, the game punishes you for going back in time. Now, this hasn't been completely tested, like what happens to turnips. It is interesting though, as time travel normally involved you having to close the game in past iterations.
I have some things waiting in front of the museum as well. Maybe 15 or so items. You can find many new things in the time it takes for his tent to be replaced with a proper museum. I got the house today (could have upgraded a day earlier but I wanted to live in a tent for another day) so now I can put them in storage too. I just think it's more convenient having them next to him and they look nice when you have just few of them nicely organized.
@SolarisPolaris Cool! Thank you!
@BenAV You’ll definitely be pleasantly surprised when the museum opens
I had over forty donations waiting for Blathers when the museum opened. But yeah, why not just use storage?
Ummm sooo totally new to AC. I’ve just been letting them go if I can’t hold them, I don’t even know how you store like this 🤷♀️
First time playing ac, me and brother played for 13 hours in total yesterday, 5 on release day. We started doing this by stacking them near blathers tent, but it isn't as bad as these pictures.
I'm just imagining poor Blathers opening his museum and then we walk in with a huge trailer full of bugs.
I was wondering how the heck did they manage to catch so many different types of fish and bugs in such a short time period and then i realized... time travel...
I'm not gonna do that, I'm taking my sweet time and enjoy playing this game the way it was intended.
EDIT: I was wrong, there really are a huge abundant selection of bugs and fish to catch, I forgot we are in Spring season. Plus i started my game during night time, not much to find at late hours. I'm doing the same thing now too, fish, bugs, and fossils everywhere outside on my Island 🤣
@ATaco that's kinda the idea with AC, half an hour a day is perfect. Unfortunately it's arrived at a time when many people in the world have vast amount of time on their hands!
I think more than usual a lot of people will burn out with this AC.
@ukaskew yeah, i dont see the point in changing times, dates etc. Just let the game go at its own pace. I have stored a few crates outside the tent but they are only things ive been able to catch in the currant time frame. About 8 fish, some bugs and a few butterflies. I will be back on it tonight to see if there are any night life about like spiders and some night fish etc but im happy to just wait. This is my first AC game ive really played. Dabbled in the wii one but only about an hour or so.
@CairiB same bit ive just figured out that if you go in to the menu and click on the caught critter you can select to store it. Has to be a critter in your pocket tho. If you dont have room you cant store it.
Yeah, this is looking like my island now. Why do we have to wait so long for Blathers?!
Yup mine looks just like this. Plus I invited a villager to stay yesterday and they never showed up 😤
Update: Patience
Just store them in your house or sell to Timmy
How do we put items in storage? Do we need a type of furniture? Anyway, last night I paid off the first house(not tent) got the materials for the store and planted the museum. I completely forgot until last night about giving materials to Nook. I did keep getting bitten by the infamous spider last night. How do we catch the spider again, he charges you when he sees you?
@DAHstroy
To get the museum give five things you caught to Nook.
@biglittlejake You need to own a house first. Then when in the home, press Right on the d-pad.
@biglittlejake
To the storage: enter your house. Press X, select the item you want to store with A and choose "Put to storage". To access the storage and remove items from it press right on the D-Pad in your house.
To the spider: you can just rush the spider with your net and get lucky. Alternatively (and probably safer) you can slowly move towards the spider. Make sure to stop moving everytime it stands upwards and gets in attack position. When you are close enough hit it with your net.
lol! I am not that bad, cos not much mix bugs on my island, fishes slightly better.. all while waiting for construction of the museum and my house.
This game moves too slow for me so I jumped ahead. The museum is nice. It's larger than I expected. Timmy and Tommy have opened up Nooks Cranny. Nook has me setting up 3 furnished houses for new residents.
@Chibi_Manny If they were time traveling that much, they would already have the museum.
@Seacliff yeah i realized that today, I edited my previous comment noting about my error.
@Silly_G far less efficient and time consuming to store them in storage. This saves having to load back up at your house.
In case anyone comes back here -
How do I reset my house? The "design editor" design covered my 2 windows and I can't get it off. There's no undo, delete, back, grab, anything that I've tried.
I am greatly annoyed at having my 2 windows covered. Like "FIRE THE PROGRAMMER!!" annoyed.
I did see there's an "Advanced Designer" for 800 Nook Miles. If that does the trick please let me know. 😁
EDIT: So, problem solved, wallpaper <> design. I wonder what would happen if we could take off the wallpaper and "Design", would our house have no walls? 😂
@biglittlejake I know, the museum is under construction now.
I mean you only have this problem if you haven’t paid off your tent. I got my house already and have storage so this was only a problem on day one.
@xpromisedx yah you can only donate once, he won't take something you already donated.
@rjejr after you changed wallpaper, did your old one go to your pockets? put it back
I didn't know you could put fish tanks on top of other fish tanks!
@JFizDaWiz Thanks for the reply.
No wallpaper in my pocket except what Timmg/Tommy gave me for getting my house. I think it was yellow flowers.
And I don't think it's wallpaper, it's the airplane design. First I made a mannequin, then a canvas, then "cover the wall". I'm going to go put up the wallpaper now. I did try several different designs, flowers, etc, made my own, but it always covered the windows. Which is stupid. Why cover the windows? WHY?!?!?
Gonna go try wallpaper now, thanks again.
@JFizDaWiz Ugh, yes the "Simple plain-white wall paper" did tge trick. I won't be covering anything in design again. Made a floor mat and a canvas painting and put up the flower wallpaper to get my windows back and I'm leaving it like that for now.
Thanks again.
@rjejr Thanks for the question and what you have tried. I think I will not put wallpaper till I get bigger house where some room don't need window.
Anyone know how to delete "custom design" that you have saved? I did one to get Nook Miles point. And I want to delete it, but can't find a way to.
@PBandSmelly
Once you finish the museum, he will collect donations on groups haha so it will be great once the museum is done completely
@UnknownReader Do you really need to delete your "Custom design"? I made 1 too just to try it out and there must be another 30 open slots, so I just left it.
The actual walls, and 2 windows, turned into a roll of wallpaper of went into my pocket, which I unknowingly put into storage, which is why I coudln't find it. When I put it back on the windows came back. No more wall designs, but wallpaper is ok. Tommy gave me a flower one, it looks ok so I'm using that.
@CairiB "I don’t even know how you store like this"
Spoilers - you've been warned.
I THINK you can only store once you get a house not w/ a tent, I never tried it with a tent though.
You get a house from Tom Nook after you pay him the 5,000 Nook Miles. It happens over night, went to sleep in a tent, woke up in a house.
Once inside the house, or outside a house, you click on an item in your pocket and then choose "place". If it doesn't say "Place" then you can't.
Sell your extra stuff - seashells etc - to the little Nook in the tent, Timmy or Tommy, I forget which.
@rjejr idk, I prefer to keep ( items or design made ) what I like and those I don't I either sell or delete. So was hoping there is a way to delete. If not then maybe later on I will edit design, lol!
Meanwhile, the smart ones among us are using the 80 slots of storage in our house instead of making a mess 😂
@UnknownReader Yeah, didn't think of just editing it. Can you just "fill" the entire thing 1 color then start over? I'm not a big editor, too much work. There is an 800 mile "Design Editor" in the Nook Miles machine, maybe if you buy that you can edit? I'm saving all my Nook Miles for airplane tickets, I like traveling more than editing or designing.
I've had the same problem since day 1, but I just used the down time to play Doom Eternal instead since I bought both. My museum should be finished tomorrow.
@rjejr
Yep, I've totally been doing this myself 😉
Why waste storage space when I have a perfectly good unused beach?
@BenAV best thing is that you can donate in bulk now...no more one at a time.
I know that most big fans playing on day 1 had to deal with this, but frankly I wasn't too bothered by it. It's tacky on the island, sure, but it makes more sense than starting with the museum and for most regular, non-obsessive players, it won't be a problem. It would have been nice to have a way to hand stuff off to the museum before he got there, but the little inconveniences are a part of what makes Animal Crossing feel alive.
@shonenjump86 you should ahve gotten more if you're on of those Island filled with them… they print money!
Just sell for bells until Blathers is good to go. I don’t find any of the creatures in this game are that rare that you can’t just catch them again in a day or two.
Graham's going to grab so much fish!!
@Joeynator3000 Yeah and there is a large stadium on the left xD
@rjejr I don't think so! This game is going to have top free dlc. Can't wait to get pac man and doom guy on my island.... Ooooh makin me.... 👍😍. Now everybody wave your hands in the air and say. Tom nook is the best! Ac Ac! Where every body wanna be! By the sea! Yup,! Drinking all day! Yup! Party till bedtime in my cool new crib!
