It's easy to forget the Switch Online smartphone app is a thing. The last major update it received was tied to the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate stage builder and since then it's got a handful of updates making some minor adjustments and changes. Prior to this, support was added to the app for Splatoon 2.
Although it's not got the best reputation, it seems like Nintendo will be sticking with it as a communicative and social tool. On the same official game page for Animal Crossing: New Horizons that mentions "in-game purchases", there's a section below this that confirms it will support the Nintendo Switch smartphone app.
As noted, Nintendo has already rolled out an update for Smash Bros. and Splatoon 2. Both these games are community-driven titles, so it makes a lot of sense for Nintendo to support Animal Crossing as well.
Unfortunately, it hasn't been revealed how the app will interact with Animal Crossing. There's some speculation over on Twitter, though, that the game might receive its own application within the app, or that it could potentially be used to support in-game voice chat. Some other fans are hoping it allows players to scan QR codes.
How do you think Nintendo's Switch Online app will support this upcoming release? Have you used this app previously? Share your thoughts below.

I was thinking the other day that they could retain the ability to share custom patterns via QR code using a phone's camera and the NSO app to make up for the fact that the Switch doesn't have a camera.
Love the phone app, will use it with Animal Crossing.
Oh dear... The Online App dosen't exactly have the best reputation. I'm not expecting much.... (Hope I'm wrong)
Too bad the app doesn't support any logical human behavior. I love how in the cute little animation it shows Mario using it while it floats in front of his face, which is literally the only way it could work.
It would be cool if you could offer trades or sell stuff through the online app. I highly doubt it though.
@DonSerrot : I've been hoping that Nintendo would produce a specialised Joy-Con (perhaps with both L/R variants to accommodate left-handed people) that includes a microphone and camera (due to the form factor of the Joy-Con, I would expect it to be low-res like the 3DS/Wii U camera), which would be great for the odd karaoke game, voice chat, photo-generated Miis like the ones on 3DS and Wii U, taking snapshots, and would certainly make for a very interesting new WarioWare game if such Joy-Con were to be available.
@DonSerrot That is a great idea.
Now if they integrated support for it in Super Mario Maker 2. All and all I can see why Nintendo went that way with voice chat and this app: Not only does it keep the cost of the console and controllers low; but to allows for integration like this to happen.
They're still trying to make this app work? It needs a complete overhaul and a plethora of new features and updates to be worth it!
forgot that app thing even existed, they better correct that in thier next switch model because i'm not using a cell for such a simple feature a switch can do.
Can we get the direct already?
can you backup the app's save data?
lets hitch a game to an app last updated 6 months ago and a 2.7 ratting.
Maybe it backs up your saves to your phone 😏
I bought a new phone and didn't care to reinstall the NSO app. With how wildly successful and impressive the Switch's life has been, it's easy to forget how spectacularly Nintendo botched nearly every aspect of NSO. I'm averse to Nintendo's newly adopted paid subscription model, but if they need to increase NSO fees in order to provide a more competent service, make it happen. This sucks.
I could see it working pretty well for some kind of item buying catalog like with splatoon 2
NSO App??
Dr Frankenstein voice: IT LIVES!!!!
-Custom clothing center (similar to smash online )
@DarkLloyd The app is way better and has more potential. You can check out your game without your console. Just wish Nintendos app was like Discord x Miiverse. That would be epic.
@kepsux Yes, just not the game's data. 🤓
Designing levels for Smash Bros. Ultimate, Photographing things to use as patterns in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, A proper Mii Maker/Streetpass app, A Pokemon Go Stadium, Downloadable Amiibo codes on Pepsi cans that work via phone NFC, PANTONE-inspired colour catcher for Splatoon 3; its such a shame Nintendo don’t lean on mobile more to supplement their games and offset some of the functionality the Switch lacks.
I hope it allows you to read mail that you receive from other villagers and players. If not, a catalog like the one in New Leaf would also be very nice.
The app is a joke and the NSO isn’t much better; give us a proper virtual console and ability to chat with our friends on the Switch system itself, please.
The app is crapp
Parental controls!
the app is pretty slow and laggy, but i think AC would benifit the most out of all the games supporting the NSO app. id hope they include stuff like item trading/selling with friends and saving clothes/palette designs. and possibly vc but who cares about that
voice chat would be awesome for friends visiting your town.
I haven’t used the app before now, but happy to download it and see what it’s all about. ☺️ Some interesting ideas appearing for its potential use.
See they'd rather add support to an app which hasn't been updated in a long while over actually giving us a way to back-up our save at launch.
I check the app to see when I can dive into some SplatZones! And that’s about it. It’s such an under used app. More games the better.
Hoping its not voice chat, especially since we have games like Overwatch and Fortnite they have voice chat you can use without a phone.
Insert complain
@Zacattack99 Keep the cost of controllers low?
Ever seen the price of Joy Cons?
What can we expect from it?
More shilling of micro transactions by the big N.
sigh, in game purchases could just mean expansions later on. Or it could mean you paid for a $60 dollar game and immediately are asked to pay for more content right off the bat. Lets hope its expansions only.
I'd love it if the NSO app allowed us to send/receive Able Sisters designs QR codes, given the Switch doesn't have a camera built-in I think this is perfect. Plus I'm fine with the app being used for voice chat as well. I have AirPods and that works great. I just put one in my ear at a time and when it starts to die, I swap for the other one and put the dead one back in the charging case. That way I constantly have a wireless headset ready to go. I would also love some kind of notification system running through the NSO app where I could write a letter in Animal Crossing and drop it off in my post office to be sent to someone through Nintendo Switch Online on my friend list and have it arrive in their mailbox (without first having to visit their island) and then they also get a notification on their phone through the NSO app to tell them they've received mail. I think that would be really fun and cool, if Nintendo bothered to put in the programming effort.
@Ventilator, I mean those things are expensive enough. With customer products like this; it’s best to strike a balance between cost, profit and tech. We could of been paying $100 for Joy-Con or $90 for Pro Controllers just to offset Nintendo’s manufacturing costs.
@Zacattack99 Yes, that's true.
What a relief
is this meant to distract us from the whole "no save backup" thing?
I totally forgot about the app.
