Recovering from eye surgery hasn’t stopped me from playing an inadvisable amount of Star Wars: Hunters. Also, i’ll be picking up Rocket Knight Adventures:Re-Sparked at some point. Thanks for the list!
Two cool races for sure! It’s been awhile since i played it, i liked the shoggoth chase.
The Shadow out of Time would make a sweet film. Self Made Hero has a decent graphic novel adaptation.
I was bummed Guillermo del Toro never got At the Mountains of Madness made.
Thanks to The Thing, Alien, Halloween and Nightmare on Elm Street i was a convert to the horror genre at a very early age.
The Thing is one of those great Lovecraftian films that isn’t actually based on a particular story of Howard’s. Though it shares its setting with At The Mountains of Madness. At the Mouth of Madness is another one by Carpenter that’s not based on a particular Lovecraft work.
While i love Stuart Gordon’s shlocky takes on specific Lovecraft stories (especially From Beyond), i don’t think they evoke the themes of H.P.’s stories quite as effectively as the aforementioned films.
The recent film, Annihilation, was pretty good.
My favorite Lovecraft tale is The Colour Out of Space. It has been ported to film recently, featuring Nic Cage, and is okay except for two utterly pointless scenes and one lackluster cgi monster(the rest of the cg i don’t mind). In some genres cgi is fine, but in horror, i almost never want it. The Thing , perhaps above any other film, sets the example.
I never played The Thing video game, but had two buddies who did, and one thought it sucked and the other loved it. I think the critic reviews were mixed too.
I might try this out if it happens.
(I wonder if Nightdive will ever get to Dark Corners of the Earth…)
Was ambushed by a dogsitting request so will be playing Picross S Namco Legendary edition this weekend. And i bought Please, Touch the Artwork cuz it was dirt cheap and Gavin seemed to get a real kick out of it.
Next week i have eyeball surgery.. so i might have to lay off gaming for a few days. Not sure. But after, i shall be free of work and medical stuffz and intend to game at will.
Happy gaming all and take care of each other!
I’ll be checking out the Star Wars:Hunters game. As a Star Wars fan, i am unfortunately obligated. I hope there is an Ithorian or Jawa to play. Most of the Star Wars games i’ve played, i’ve disliked, and seeing how this is f2p, i imagine my verdict of my play experience will be a negative one. But maybe it will be fun. Picross S Namco Legendary Edition will be the first picross game i’ve played since the Sega one. I was compelled to do all the puzzlez in that game, and it invaded my free time to such a degree that i am going to wait until i am less busy to indulge in the Namco themed puzzlez.
I never played Celeste, but heard it’s set to some pretty rockin beats, and the music in the trailer is nice, but the game itself is what has me slathering. I do hope it comes to Switch, but i certainly won’t wait until it does to play it.
I’m not a full-on acolyte of the Seiken Densetsu series, but i have played a couple of them (Secret of Mana on snes and SD3(the old one)) and they were good.
This is one i’ll be watching out for, and while couch co-op doesn’t do much for me, the game’s art is gorgeous and the Augment system seems cool.
Thanks to Saxon, Michael,Tyrone and Alana for the interview!
Alana is playing Dark Souls 3 before 2. I had a very difficult time with 2 and thought 3 was quite gentle, so i would never recommend playing 3 first, for that reason and many others. But, i am sure she has her reasons, and best of luck to her!
I haven’t played anything (weep freely for me) this week as i have been inundated.
But this weekend i have some breathing room and hope to make time for SaGa Scarlet Grace and i picked up Wizardry:Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord after reading Gavin’s smashing review. I won’t start it for a while though. I existed when it released, but have never played it before. The review has me fearing the grind, but excitedly anticipating the challenge.
Hoping to get some Tutankham in. I can’t talk about the game, as it is a vague childhood memory. Soon to be restored and bolstered by new memories.
We’re trying to get time for DnD, but are so busy on both sides. I had to do some quick extra art and make up some extra encounters as my player is at a lake (i made custom rules for fishing) and forgot she had a potion of water breathing.
Happy weekend all and take care of each other!
Adding puzzle platforming to a twin stick shooter is a trespass beyond redemption as far as i’m concerned , but here’s hoping they can iron out a few of the many issues, so those interested in this admittedly comely game, don’t have to suffer quite so much as Kate has suffered. Although, it seems like it has a few issues that are perhaps beyond repair… a pity! I can imagine the excitement for this one was considerable at first glance, and i can feel the disappointment. Lucky for me, i can choose to admire the art without having to suffer the game’s offensively constructed gameplay. The knowledge of which comes to me in a skillfully constructed review. Thank you, Kate!
They could have added a glint of paint so the eyes don’t look as if Banjo and Kazooie are assessing the worth of one’s apparently soon-to-be-proffered soul. They should add a pullstring that when tugged , Banjo asks, “Wouldst thou like to live deliciously?”
So stoked. The MD/Master System picross was my favorite themed Picross game. Unless reviewers report their Switch’s exploding upon booting this up, i’ll buy it.
I’ve always referred to the “real meat” of a conversation as the meat’s meat.
Also, is handling the ball with telekinetic powers allowed? If not , depending on how far Mewtwo can spread his three golf ball tipped fingers, he might have trouble with ball handling, in more ways than one.
But, i guess that would be the meat of the meat’s meat.
Busy today, so i’ll write just a lil bit.
What will Kate review, i am wondering?
Along with our friend, Fishy, i also played Super Mario Land. Cute game with too many boulders and lovely music. I took longer than Fishy to beat it though.
Pretty much done with Eschatos but will surely play it off and on for years to come. Brilliant shmup.
Still going through the wonderful SaGa Scarlet Grace. It’s slow going as my gaming time is limited, but once summer hits, and i get some medical issues out of the way, i will be immersed.
Bought Killing Floor 2 on pc and if i get time , i’ll play with a buddy. It was $1.50.
Take care of each other and have a swell week in gaming all!
Despite having had a 3do, i never played this back when. I knew about it, which means i wasn’t interested or couldn’t find it. Probably the former.
Although, there were a few oddities that i didn’t love at first blush, but learned to really enjoy like Supreme Warrior, which is an experience.
Hopefully w’ell see more 3do stuff in the future.
A collection would be the bomb. I imagine there is licensing issues…
Thanks for the review!
I’ll be grabbing Tutankham at some point. It’s one of those games i played a lot in the arcade (I never had it on my 5200 and my colecovision and 2600 owning pals didn’t own it either)when i was very young, and don’t really remember the gameplay. I expect jumping back in will be a fun endeavor.
What? The great and unwashed, peerless master of the katana, Miyamoto Musashi vs Cthulhu , the eldritch horror who snoozez in dead R’lyeh… sign me up… i guess? Musashi was something of a philosopher, and i read a translation of one of his books a couple decades ago. He wrote repeatedly about how one should always try to stab people in the face during swordplay. I recall a list describing various precarious and life threatening situations in combat, and his antidote for each one was to stab the opponent in the face. So, look out Cthulhu? I mean Cthulhu is 0-1 having lost out to a boat…
O the digression!
The physical edition is lovely. But, when i went to preorder, i glimpsed a choking hazard and slowly backed away.
Now don’t get me wrong, i am all for playing with power, but i have to draw the line somewhere.
I had been eyeballin this dog for many years before it was released, and was disappointed by mediocre critic and user reviews when it finally dropped. Persuaded not to buy it, the desire to still play it has lain dormant in my consciousness. But there it still lurks.
This is because of the vibe. Back in the 80s, i used to GM a ttrpg called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Other Strangeness. Based on the relatively obscure(back then, before the show) titular turtles, it allowed the player to choose from a wide range of animal species and spend points to mutate various aspects of their animal character. Fun stuff (though the base system needed a lot of help)and it had a lot of sourcebooks mostly focusing on a post-apocalyptic setting.
So that’s the nostalgia factor, and i’ve always been an animal buff, so i think i might grab this when it goes on sale on Steam and then seeing how this one runs well, grab it on Switch (if it is to my liking), though will certainly wait for a sale there too.
The shot of those three witches cruising the skies… cute.
Kiki’s got nothing on their aggressively aerodynamic proboscises, which alone look flightworthy.
I’m guardedly interested in this.
Well, now we know why Kate listens to Stealy Dan.
I stole my mom a mother’s day gift once… long ago, not yesterday!
Regardless of the game she’s writing about, Kate’s articles are always a joy to read.
Busy weekend as i have taken on the task of organising a mother’s day celly.
Been playing SaGa Scarlet Grace: Ambitions and really enjoy it. Particularly the combat which is turn based and has a lot of fun stuff turn order and allocating resources. The overworld map is pleasing to look at and locations pop up in a fashion similar to that of a pop-up book. I have a collection of pop-ups and so find this little visual flourish appealing. Anyways, it appears that one plays through a series of campaigns, each focused on a different character. Regardless, i love the game and thanks to those who recommended it.
Almost forgot to grab Eschatos before it went off sale. Qute’s 3rd shmup does not disappoint with nearly seamless level transitions, fun weapon switching mechanics and a simple but enjoyable scoring system that gives multipliers based on waves of enemies destroyed. And the game is bundled with Qute’s first two shmups, M-KAI’s first effort , the great Judgement Silversword and the bizzare Cardinal Sins . Both were Wonderswan games.
Have a great weekend all, take care of each other and Happy Mother’s Day to any moms out there!
I already bought Rastan Saga. A brutally difficult arcade game that i have fond memories of. Very much inspired by the Conan character. I suspect the rising popularity of Dungeons and Dragons and other fantasy ttrpgs internationally, as well as the Conan films, had more to do with its inspiration than Robert E. Howard’s works.
And i bought There’s No Dinosaurs last week. I am a sucker for a good Hidden Object game and i like dinos. While the art was cute, the game lacked challenge and i was done with it in 20minutes. I imagine someone considerably younger than i would get a kick out of it, though. Animal Well has been on my radar since the indie direct, and i will be getting it at some point, but currently have my hands full with the excellent Eschatos and SaGa Scarlet Grace:Ambitions. Biomutant is a game i’ve been curious about for a long time. I will be stunned if it arrives on Switch in a playable state. It reminds me of the old TMNT snd other Strangeness and its After The Bomb campaign setting.
Also, Little Kitty, Big City will be procured.
@Tasuki Found two reviews that said it took them 5-6 hours to beat and one who’s author claimed finishing it in 2 is possible, if all side content is ignored.
I once was driving on a back country highway at the break of dawn and saw a mommy possum crossing the road with a busload of joeys clinging to her back and flanks. Her fuzzy retinue being thoroughly and constantly jostled.
I waited longer than i would have liked for her and her squeaking luggage to cross the street.
I can’t help but think that a spanking suit of plate armor and a jetpack would have been the choicest of gifts for that encumbered matron.
I never played Rocket Knight Adventures back in the day, despite frequently seeing it at the rental shop. But, i did manage to dive into that first title some years ago, and it was a very good action platformer.
The sequels look pretty snazzy in the vid so this will be going on the wishlist.
@Mgalens I am sensing there is a disparity in value that different fans of this series spread amongst the various games(a common occurrence). It seems a consensus as to which is the best SaGa is unattainable(but for the evidence above) and i wish i could try them all, as perhaps there’s one for me, but i am contented with just trying a couple for now.
Your assessments are helpful, and they reinforce my hunch that Romancing SaGa 3 is for me, but i feel that it would be foolish of me not to try and start with Scarlet Grace, as it is recommended as a starting point and scores well. Emerald Beyond looks more appealing than Scarlet Grace to me, but at its current price, is too risky an endeavor.
Before continuing this comment i snapped a look at SaGa Frontier Remastered and i dig the art style and am now thinking of grabbing it as well.
I have seen others writing highly of Frontier 2 and hope it is indeed coming to Switch as i would like to try it.
@PokemonDMG Did i misunderstand you? I think Dooku would have picked it up right away…it’s not a dead language, Yoda just speaks Galactic Basic with unorthodox syntax as far as i know.
Please educate me as i fear i am missing your point entirely.
Edit- i see now, the first part of your initial comment was in Yoda’s words but the second part is an entirely different way of speaking. Yes?
Been super busy lately and most of my free time has spent working on my DnD campaign, so i’ve not been video gaming much.
Switch: I did pick up a silly Hidden Object Game. And i also bought a QubicGames game called Life Bubble and weirdly, it’s a serviceable time waster. It’s like a survival game without the survival mechanics and focuses mostly on mining resources , building stuff, and upgrading one’s character. So whatever genre that is. Nothing amazing, but for a couple bucks i’m surprised its enjoyable.
I hope to finish Freedom Planet 2 (which is great) this weekend. And start SaGa Scarlet Grace Ambitions.
PC - nothing. No time.
DnD - Preparing for the next dungeon. I am trying to make a minecart ride for it, but i need to make it fun and unique and not tedious or frustrating . I think i will make it fairly low danger(maybe some piercers overhead), and have valuables to pick up with dex checks and so forth, and maybe use flash cards with art, and a timer to simulate the cart ride. W’ell see if i can make it work.
Take care of each other and have.a swell week of gaming all!
@FishyS Congrats! Yeah, the last couple levels are nastier with obstacles! I don’t remember much of the post game stuff cuz i played it so long ago, but i think there’s a more difficult version of the base game and an extra skill tree unlocked at some point but the tree had to do with modifying the game’s difficulty rather than modifying your own abilities so it’s nothing too thrilling. I think i just maxed my tree in the regular game and then quit playing. Anyways, way to go for beating a challenging game!

@Tasuki Found two reviews that said it took them 5-6 hours to beat and one who’s author claimed finishing it in 2 is possible, if all side content is ignored.

Wowzerz!
Welp, time to hit the streets again.
Re: Rocket Knight Adventures: Re-Sparked Crashes Onto Switch In June
Thanks for the news!
Re: Best SaGa Games Of All Time - Switch And Nintendo Systems
Thank you for all the info and recommendation!
Re: Round Up: Celebrate Star Wars Day 2024 On The Nintendo Switch
@PokemonDMG Did i misunderstand you? I think Dooku would have picked it up right away…it’s not a dead language, Yoda just speaks Galactic Basic with unorthodox syntax as far as i know.
Please educate me as i fear i am missing your point entirely.
Edit- i see now, the first part of your initial comment was in Yoda’s words but the second part is an entirely different way of speaking. Yes?
Re: Round Up: Celebrate Star Wars Day 2024 On The Nintendo Switch
@PokemonDMG “Master Yoda, I am not.” would be the correct syntax if that’s what you’re going for. Apologies for assuming.
Re: Round Up: Celebrate Star Wars Day 2024 On The Nintendo Switch
May the 4th be with you fellow Star Wars fans!
Nothing Star Wars for me this weekend , but best wishes to those who do find a moment to celebrate.
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (4th May)
Been super busy lately and most of my free time has spent working on my DnD campaign, so i’ve not been video gaming much.
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (4th May)
@FishyS Congrats!
