These are unattainable, to me, at least not without a quest that would require far more gumption than i could ever muster in so little time. But still, a lot of fun to look at and read about.
Thanks again, Jim!
@LadyCharlie It’s impressive. I wouldn’t have jumped to the conclusion that middle school students had made this. It’s not super short either. I dropped over an hour into it so far and i haven’t left the first zone. I think it would go quicker with a controller, but it’s not a tiny game. And you can tell they really put thought into the level design.
The wildlife pixel art is especially good!
@GrailUK Nah, the npc critters are just talking heads who hint and tutorialise. The metroidvania bit, where you gain abilities to open up new areas , is solely determined by the color of collectibles you get. You gather kelp, which functions as ammo and different colored ammo types allow you to break different barriers that block access to new areas.
I bought it on steam , and it’s a respectable and fun aquatic metroidvania. Thoughtful level design and the aquatic wildlife sprites are highlights for me. I think at this age i was still trying to master not hitting the edge of the bowl, so these kids are eons ahead of where i was at. But most kids were tbh lol
I’m gonna get it on switch too because i prefer a controller when i platform.
@LikelySatan I don’t remember reading anything negative about the game or the dev, maybe it just got lost in the crowd. It came out the same year as Celeste, The Messenger and Guacamelee 2. I dunno, but i checked and i already own the game on steam!
@FishyS lol There are a lot of cat games on the eshop! The fact that you have so many that are platformers is proof enough.
I looked at Bubble Bunny and might skip it as it is a puzzle bobble inspired game. It does look cute.
Please let me know if you ever come across any good Bunny or Cat games!
Freedom Planet 2 - Had never heard of these games, and thanks to Mitch’s review, will be jumping in this weekend. Bubble Bunny - i really like bunniez. I buy random bunny games. They almost all suck. @sfb That’s awesome you got a response from the dev! I played the first Star Control on Genesis(MegaDrive) and i really dug it. The 3do version of SC2 had voicework and the pc version didn’t?! Dang.
Barony is something i’ve read about , i believe, perhaps in an old magazine .. not sure, but i’ll check it out! Thanks for the beans!

@sfb Never played Star Control 2, heard it was good. Guardian War sounds rad. I looked it up and it does predate FFT by a couple of years. There were earlier tactical rpgs, but Guardian War is a game i’ve never heard of! We had a lot of late night tournaments of Return Fire. It was fun until people started unplugging controllers when they lost. And yeah, some great classical tunes like Ride of the Valkyries and Flight of the Bumblebee. Star Fighter sounds interesting. I can’t believe i forgot Slayer! I love that game. A lot of people rate the sequel over it, but for me the first game is the best, though it slogs a bit and i recall having to exploit the game’s shortcomings to beat the later levels. Thanks for the reply and reminding me of Slayer!
@Grail_Quest Good to read you enjoyed the system too! I remember the 3do being considered cutting edge by a lot of people. A local bar was the first to get one, as the guy who owned it was an enthusiast. Initially, only Way of the Warrior was available. That was the first game i played, and so wasn’t blown away lol. It drew some people into the bar, but ultimately didn’t get played much. Regardless, i ended up having a lot of good times with it too. Not a fan of the N64, so would actually take the 3do’s library over it. Thank you for the reply!
Final Fantasy 6 takes the top 3 lol. It’s my favorite and the only one i would ever recommend to anybody, so that’s sweet.
9 is next at 4, which is coincidentally the score i gave it. Just for you guys. It deserves a 2. Double the points!
I wonder if 7 would be higher if the new versions didn’t exist.
As always, fun to see the culmination of everyone weighing in!
I had a 3do but chose to avoid PO’ed as i felt with the mixed(mostly negative) reviews it was too big a risk.
If you’re familiar, you’re probably wondering why i didn’t avoid the greater risk in purchasing the 3do.
The console was actually my roomie’s. I counseled against the purchase , but he bought it anyways. My disdain for Trip’s little-engine-that-couldn’t didn’t prevent me from partaking its dubious pleasures though, and i have a bit of a soft spot for the console, despite its ridiculous daisy-chained controllers.
Space Hulk , Slayer, Killing Time, Sewer Shark, Need for Speed, Gex, Total Eclipse, Supreme Warrior, Theme Park, Hell, Samurai Shodown, Lucienne’s Quest(jk, i wish) and Return Fire were all titles i took on to varying degrees of enjoyment. But not PO’ed.
Too insane.
Might have to check it out now, though.
Edit- added some games cuz memory wuz jogged
@-wc- No sir! I loved Square’s games. Just a bit of commiserating. I disagree with some of the stuff you said, but wanted to find some common ground. When i read that you needed to accept the fact that Square will never regain their former glory, i immediately recalled how i was just, once again, wrestling with that resignation myself a few days ago. For over 15 years, if you asked me what my favorite game of all time was: Final Fantasy 6 and Chrono Trigger were the only two answers i would ever give. They constantly jockeyed for position in the back of my mind.
But i don’t care for most of their later titles. And admittedly while i didn’t love everything they did back then, the stuff i did like was unsurpassable.
So, i was just agreeing with you about them not being what they once were.
@KingMike
I first played the original game a couple weeks after launch so my memory as a new player is deadened by time and exposure. I only remember being generally irritated at the gameplay in the opera scene. I can certainly think of more egregious offenders. The infinite loop in the Narshe caves comes to mind.
I probably read the opera script, spent no effort memorizing it and was upset when i had to do the thing over. Which is on me, but i think the scene is important enough to Celes’ development as a character, that gameplay doesn’t have to be involved.
Certainly there are worse times in other games where one is forced to replay a section. I play a lot of roguelikes so the penalty isn’t bothersome to me in all genres. In rpgs, and especially in ff6, it perhaps irritated me more because the bulk of my enjoyment is derived from the art, music and story. The gameplay just adds a little something. I never want it to get in the way.
That’s a nasty spot in YoNoid!. Never played it, but i appreciate the description. A pet peeve of mine is when a game establishes a mechanic and reinforces it as a constant, and then changes it on me without warning. Thanks for the obscure video game knowledge! It is always enjoyed.
Edit-cut a useless paragraph and rearranged the others. Improved diction.
@Greenmanalishi Anyone who values their opinions as facts is hard to take seriously.
You might not have more gaming experience than i. Different opinions are valued differently by different people.
@Greenmanalishi I think in this case, we value things differently. Regardless, i think the original ff6 is a bit of a pain to play and not worth it over the pixel remastered version, beyond historical perspective.
I disliked the original way it was done and this way allows for the scene to be more easily appreciated by newer audiences(and me, obviously), which i am sure is what they wanted.
It’s a great scene and it’s memorable, but as far as an emotional beat, it sits pretty low on my list of ff6’s all time heavy hitters.
@DaniPooo He tries to cover up his social inadequacies with bravado, which is common and harmless enough, but the way he’s written i find him incessantly annoying and i think you should usually have a reason to help someone.
Not Japan. The way the artist has drawn the bottom of the turtles shells has me concerned. The shell extends too far down and, particularly in Raphael’s case, you can observe that the shell curves under. This indicates the two halves of his shell are fused. Normally a port would be there to allow for a tail to exit, among other things.
What i am trying to say here is we have turtles with no tail who probably have no discernible way to, and excuse my outrageous breach of etiquette, but they have no way to spend a penny.
Awash in their own shells!
North America.
Shadow is my least favorite Sonic character and his arrival is parallel to when i started disliking the franchise. Though he is certainly not the reason for it. Hopefully they handle him well in the film.
@tseliot Series is really good but they pretty much improved on everything with New and i would recommend jumping into that one first unless you just really want to see the franchise’s origins. Don’t touch Like. While it’s the latest entry in the series, i feel like it’s just awful in every way. With the success of the second game they tried to appeal to the new fans as well as the old, but they watered down a lot of the deep systems while still retaining poor tutorialisation and a clunky control scheme amidst what is still a very complex game. Plus, the Switch port of Like is terrible.
Despite living in the states, i never played Oregon Trail either. But my friends all did. The lot of them despise the game simply because it was the only game they were allowed to play in school. Overexposure.
I was lucky as in my school, a classmate of mine snuck in a game called Telengard. It was an rpg and i imagine, put Oregon Trail to shame, and we played it every chance we got. It was a better to reason to cut class than most and turned computer class from an exercise in excruciating boredom to an adventure. The thrill of subterfuge no doubt added to the excitement.
I’ve looked it up on the internet and apparently Telengard hasn’t held up well.
Though it served me sufficiently long ago.
Infocom stuff. Like the Zork series. Enchanter, Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Planetfall, Quarterstaff, etc. These games came with loads of physical bits and photographs of these items would be a tasty morsel. Of course, these titles would be a rough go on Switch, without the keyboard, but still i think, with their legacy and unique trappings, would benefit from being Eclipsed. Plus, it would be ironic since the games themselves were eclipsed by games with ya know, actual graphics.
Also, SSI’s gold box Dungeons and Dragons games. There’s a nice collection on Steam, but i feel a more thorough treatment could(and should, these are the first dnd games to use the official ruleset and many of them are excellent(though not without problems that time has revealed, much like old school dnd itself) is warranted.
P.S. Sierra
Geez i woke up late.
Switch - Fury Unleashed still. Can make it to the final level every run, so i imagine i will beat the game this weekend. Also playing more Survivalists with muh gal.
Also i’ve had shmup fever and been stuffing my face with the likes of Lightening Force , Blazing Star , Mushisimehama , the Strikers games, Thunder Force AC , Espagaluda2 , 1944:The Loop Master , 19XX: War Against Destiny, Giga Wing and Tohou: Azure Reflections this past week. I need to pick up Eschatos. Also, i got Dakka Squadron and am waiting for a performance patch so i don’t wish for the touch of the reaper’s scythe every time i play it. I ran through the first Mega Man again. I don’t why. I used to run through the first four MM games yearly and i quit just short of a decade ago. Of course now i have to do 2, 3 and 4.
PC- Satisfied with what i’ve done with Natsuki Chronicles, i turn my full attention to the more difficult Ginga Force. These two phenomenal shmups are responsible for my current affliction.
Table- We never got to DnD last week but will for sure this week as i actually got sleep. I’ve been eyeballing a board game , Life of the Amazonia. Quite the looker!
@JetForceGemInEye Never been to a Games Workshop store but used to thumb through White Dwarfs in high school and just pine away. But yeah, all those boxed games seem to now exist digitally. Don’t forget about Space Hulk!
@JetForceGemInEye Don’t think it would be a problem as Relic had the license before THQ auctioned them off to Sega. And they were bought by THQ during the development of Dawn of War, so i’m guessing they had the license before even THQ snagged them.
Although, i would be surprised if Relic ever tackles another 40k game after what happened with Dawn of War 3. But maybe.
Either way, Games Workshop doesn’t seem shy about licensing out its IPs, and i would be surprised to hear of them turning down a deal.
Space Marine 2 is coming and is being developed by Saber Intereactive.
@LikelySatan Got my case back and home. There are only two Heroes of Light songs in the game! I just played through them a couple times and i dig them. The first was Heroes of Light which reminded a lot of Dragon Quest music mixed with FF and the other one was a battle tune called Fiend sumthin.. i forget.. anyways it was really funky and cool. Got some other stuff to do now , but i’m gonna check out the rest of the soundtrack on yt when i got a minute and am anticipating hearing the rest!
Thanks for the musical suggestion!
I love Grounded but there is no way the game is going to run on the Switch in a way that would warrant such an extravagant release.
That Collector’s edition looks cool, but i won’t be buying this game before i see reviews.
I was out of the loop for awhile, and i just learned the Switch is getting Sonic Generations as a part of a sequel.
I wouldn’t describe myself as a Sonic fan, but i loved Sonic Generations. Finally!
Oh yeah, i don’t even know what Sonic Heroes is.

Re: Sega Sells Relic Entertainment And Announces Layoffs Across Multiple Teams
@JetForceGemInEye
Never been to a Games Workshop store but used to thumb through White Dwarfs in high school and just pine away.
But yeah, all those boxed games seem to now exist digitally.
Don’t forget about Space Hulk!
Re: Sega Sells Relic Entertainment And Announces Layoffs Across Multiple Teams
Re: Poll: What's The Best Final Fantasy Game? Rate Your Favourite Mainline & Spin-Offs
Re: Xbox's Grounded Is Getting A Physical Release On Switch, Pre-Orders Open
I love Grounded but there is no way the game is going to run on the Switch in a way that would warrant such an extravagant release.
That Collector’s edition looks cool, but i won’t be buying this game before i see reviews.
Re: More Sonic Game Rumours Surface Online After 'Sonic Toys Party' Leaks
I was out of the loop for awhile, and i just learned the Switch is getting Sonic Generations as a part of a sequel.
I wouldn’t describe myself as a Sonic fan, but i loved Sonic Generations. Finally!
Oh yeah, i don’t even know what Sonic Heroes is.
