If you're a fan of the monster-collecting ways of Pokémon, you may well be happy to know that one of the franchise's most recent movies has now appeared on Netflix. That's tonight's plans sorted.
Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You! is the first film in the series' newly-introduced alternate timeline, which has now been expanded to include last year's Pokémon the Movie: The Power of Us and 2019's upcoming Pokémon The Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution. The film loosely follows Ash Ketchum's story through the anime's opening season (albeit with a new plot focus), serving as one of the many recent releases designed to kick us right in the nostalgia.
The film is reportedly available in North America, Europe, and Australia on the service, with a runtime of 1 hour 37 minutes. Here's Netflix's short but sweet movie description:
"When Ash tries to pick his first Pokémon on his birthday, he ends up with a stubborn Pikachu and they embark on a journey to find the legendary Ho-Oh."
We actually posted a review of the film when it first hit western cinemas back in 2017. If you're interested, feel free to give it a read.
Will you be giving this a watch later on today? Let us know with a comment below.

I already have the steel book blu ray so I’m good and plus I personally don’t see much point with Netflix, great for those who do tho
I don't see the movie on Netflix in the UK yet, does anyone else?
I always wondered what kind of a mindset one needs to consider Pokemon movies good - from what I've seen, they take the cake in the category of "we make this movie only for the sake of promoting our merch, but we have to pretend to have some sort of a moral, story, let alone any artistic value".
@SuperRon it’s there. Kids watching it now
@SuperRon Try here: https://www.netflix.com/title/81046846 🙂
I don't know why, but I saw this and decided to watch it. Holy crap the adults in the pokemon world are super careless! Trainers get to travel on their own at 10? Teaming up with random strangers?
Like literally at one point he comes back with Pikachu absolutely beat up like crazy and Nurse Joy is like, "Oh who were you fighting?" This world is messed up.
Also he finally meets Ho Oh at the end (big spoiler I know) and his first instinct after he's literally been murdered by Marshadow and brought back to life by ... friendship? Is to pick a fight with a crazy demi-god bird!
Think it be announced this month. Makes sense in that regard . Still if not then I can still watch on my wiiu right
I noticed it yesterday while taking a look at Netflix's offerings now that I have access to it again. Might watch it at some point.
@DavidMac
You just described why I love the Pokemon world. It is a world where parents feel secure in sending their children out unescorted to make friends and grow as individuals. Despite the occasional evil organization, it's clearly an idyllic world.
@Refurin I hope you're on a watch list ...
@Preposterous The very first one is one of the best animated movies ever made. The second one is pretty decent too. From there onwards, I'd agree.
@IHateTombs - That's exactly right, the whole concept is nuts if you think about it 😅
I remember an appalling episode in season 1 where the trainer is totally physically and mentally abusing his sandshrew.... and the moral of the story was that different trainers use different methods and that the sandshrew loves his trainer after all 😳 It was totally messed up.
@DavidMac I'm not sure if this is sarcasm or if you're genuinely not familiar with the story. But whatever the case is, it is crazy when you take the cuteness out of it. But that touch of bat poop craziness gives the show and Pokèmon world it's charm
@Preposterous I don't know if they're any more product peddling than the franchise is already. And I say that as a big Pokèmon fan. They're pretty much just extra long episodes. So if you are already a fan of the show and franchise, it only makes sense you'll enjoy the movies. Now, the actual quality of the movies is a whole other discussion. They're some good ones. But a handful of clunkers as well that could have easily been a regular episode
@1UP_MARIO Thanks
@ryancraddock Got it now thanks for the help
Will be watching tomorrow, brilliant ☺️
@Preposterous The one with Zoroark is pretty decent, largely because Ash ket his nose out of it most of the time.
I haven't watched any of these since Destiny Deoxys and a little bit of Pokemon Heroes. I suppose this new continuity is a good place to jump back in?
It's... Because... Because...
@Preposterous I do't see it like that at all. I enjoyed quite a lot of them, like the older ones the most.
So, I can watch it on Wii U! Awesome!
