Last Friday's release of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has simultaneously broken records for Nintendo and made a huge impact in the UK charts. Not only did it sell enough copies to snag number one this week, but it has also become the fastest-selling Super Smash Bros. game of all time.
Launch sales for Ultimate are 302% higher than those achieved by Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, and 233% higher than Super Smash Bros. for 3DS. As always with chart figures, it's worth noting that only physical sales are counted for these statistics.
If this level of success wasn't enough, Ultimate has also become the fastest-selling game on Nintendo Switch, even managing to outsell the combined efforts of both Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee! in the UK - the titles which managed to also claim that record just three weeks ago.
Here's a look at this week's top ten all formats chart (physical sales only):
1. (New) Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
2. (2) Red Dead Redemption 2
3. (1) FIFA 19
4. (4) Battlefield V
5. (9) Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
6. (New) Just Cause 4
7. (3) Call of Duty: Black Ops 4
8. (6) Spyro Reignited Trilogy
9. (7) Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu!
10. (10) Fortnite: Deep Freeze Bundle
Did you buy any of these chart-topping games this week? Are you surprised at Smash Ultimate's success? Let us know down below.

With an install base only a 1/4 the size of the PS4 alone that's pretty damn impressive! Happy this game is getting the attention is deserves
Omg that’s huge for nintendo in the uk
This is really deserved I’m not usually a smash fan but I absolutely love ultimate I just can’t put it down
Well, I think that seals the fate of Sakurai on not doing another Smash. Nintendo will probably shackle this poor dude to a computer and make sure that this series will continue to print more money.
brilliant news! i will have people to play with online for once
Seeing unconfirmed reports of about 135,000 physical units sold, also beating the combined launch sales of Pokemon Let's Go. Add in digital sales to that and it is an amazing launch.
What the flip! Could this news be any older?! Print the whole chart you awful human beings. You are the worst of the worst, I don't even know why I bother to open my eyes in the morning as this website is the worst thing to have ever been created!
(I am taking the mick in case anyone is wondering).
Well done Smash!
In the UK too? Really??
Well, another goal achieved.
Wow, thats unexpected. Not that much of a Smash player but this one seems to have hooked me. I'm still terrible at it so not going anywhere near online, but World of Light and the Spirit Board are maore than enough for me to do for a long time.
Alos really like the way the Classic mode is setup in this. Only been through once with Link, but wil certainly play again as a few characters.
10. Fortnite: Deep Freeze Bundle
So they won’t track digital sales figures but a box with a download code for some Fortnite DLC is?
This will absolutely Smash in Japan!
Didn’t even know they had Nintendo in the UK ...
Great news for Nintendo. As i said before, the switch is created in a gold mine lol it prints pure gold.
as for smash bros, its a big system seller, the more characters and content they put in the faster it sells.
Nintendo have their holiday line-up sorted, Smash is.........well, smashing it in terms of sales. Not surprised physical sales are up, Switch consoles are also up significantly over WiiU sales.
Let's Go is also doing well in terms of sales.
Fantastic, now come on the usual suspects, try and explain this away 😂
@Sinton LOLz . Its like it doesnt exist here
@SBandy With some of the comments I’ve seen I did have to do a name check and complete read ofnthe comment before being absolutely sure this was a mick taking comment.
Guess it shows the sad state of affairs things have become.
Back on topic, Good on Smash. I admit I had my doubts how well this series would sell and if it only truly catered to the hardcore Nintendo fans. Of course that will be answered as the weeks go by.
I guess it may also end up confirming whether Smash 4’s sales was less about the game and more about the console it was on.
I went in to GAME on Friday - Lol - The shop guy said they had sold heaps and heaps of SMASH special consoles.
Not only that .. MK8DX is at No. 5 because it's selling with shed loads of MK8DX SWITCH bundles! SWITCH IS MAKING IT IN UK!!!!
@FX102A
Yes I was deliberately being OTT but it still wasn't far off the truth!
I think Smash 4's weaker sales were definitely the result of the console it was on, which many didn't know existed here in the UK anyway.
Nintendo has finally learned how to market their consoles and games properly through normal means and social media, and has made great strides in the UK since the Switch's launch last year. Long may it continue!
@RadioHedgeFund It's because GfK get figures directly from physical games retailers - Amazon, Argos, GAME, Tesco, Sainsbury's, Zavvi etc...
Steam, eShop, Xbox Live, PSN... they refuse to share sales information. Hence the situation.
Amazing did not expect this now I'm wondering what the sales are gonna be in the US and Japan. I'm gonna get my copy today can't wait this Smash looks phenomenal and I've only heard good things so far . Nintendo have hit it outta the park again first with Splatoon 2 then Zelda then Mario the new Xenoblade 2 the Pokemon titles all are phenomenal titles and I'm sure I didn't list something. Nintendo should definitely have developer of the year in the bag at this point. Kudos.
@SBandy I was thinking we're due another visit from that cretin soon....
Launch sales of Smash Bros games in the UK:
> Super Smash Bros Brawl: ~83,000
> Super Smash Bros 3DS: ~41,000
> Super Smash Bros Wii U: ~34,000
> Super Smash Bros Ultimate: ~135,000
If you include digital sales, it is possible that the launch sales of Smash Bros Ultimate exceeded the launch sales of Smash Bros Brawl, 3DS, and Wii U combined.
@westman98 How did 64 do?
Mario Kart 8 DX is now outselling COD Black Ops 4.
Let me emphasize: A 20 month old port of a 4+ year old Wii U game is now outselling the newest <2 month old COD title.
@panthro
I dont have the exact numbers, but given that the N64 and GCN were not popular at all in the UK and that the Smash Bros franchise had not yet been well established, I'm almost certain that Smash Bros N64 and Melee launch sales were well below that of Smash Bros Wii U.
@westman98 yep and most multiplats get forgotten within a couple of months, so much more value in these type of 'evergreen' games
Awesome news for Smash. Maybe the 1, 2, 3 punch of Mario Party, Pokemon and Smash will get Nintendo to 20 mil. Them and NMSBU DX.
The Switch's console target for 2019 is not looking as far fetched as many thought.
Never played any smash before. Wasn't bothered about this game at all then for some reason bought it while in Argos at the weekend. Haven't stopped playing it since. Really looking forward to unlocking snake and bayonetta. Absolutely fantastic game.
The strong uptick in MK8D sales makes me wonder how the Switch did in console sales. That is an evergreen title that a lot of people tend to buy when they first buy the console in addition to whatever game they're buying it for.
I am not a Smash guy but I have to be honest: playing Ultimate feels much better. So many improvements that make the game addictive than the previous versions.
This doesn't really surprise me. Just in comments on this site, I've seen alot of series newcomers or folks that aren't heavy series fans enjoying the mess out of Ultimate. What's good for the goose is good for the gander in this case. Happy Smashing, everyone!
Amazon screwed up my preorder! I ordered it July 10th, and they only gave it to Canada post on launch day. Not, it was waiting with them and would be delivered same day, I mean they gave it to them from their warehouse and Canada post was estimating that it'd be a week until they got it to me!
So I ended up losing my $20 preorder discount, and just cancelling the order. I just went on the eShop and bought the download version. I was happy to have physical and not use up my storage if I could. But I know I'm getting a 128 gig card as a Christmas gift, so I figured screw it, I'll just get the download. Though then I found out it was going to take an hour and a half to download, (Seriously Nintendo what's with capping off the speed of your connection!? I have 600 mbps down!) so it probably would have been quicker to drive to Best Buy and get it.
Either way, I finally have the game and I'm loving it! I've played a ton of World of Light, and while I loved Subspace, I still feel like I have a really strong sense of story even without the cut scenes. I'm like 10 hours in and it feels a little grindy but it's also super satisfying. Though I wish I knew where Link is!
I've gotten weirdly good with Wii Fit Trainer. Like I normally main Mario, Link or Pikachu, but I'm finding that when I can't beat somebody with Mario, Kirby or Pikachu, I bring in Wii Fit Trainer and it's a walk in the park. I'm also really getting an appreciation for Fox.
@johnvboy At the risk of being called a doomsayer or whatever, shifting copies of Smash bros. and shifting consoles are two different things, Smash will give Switch sales a boost, sure, but how big a boost remains to be seen, the next set of console sales figures will tell, i suppose...
The point is: it's hard to put the game down! It's gonna sell a lot through the holiday season
@westman98
The fountain of knowledge! You may know the answer to my question. I’ve heard that a lot of Switch consoles have been sold this last week. MK8D is bundled with everything but it’s a digital download. Will those sales show up in these charts because it’s attached to a physical purchase?
@SBandy
“Nintendo has finally learned how to market their consoles and games properly through normal means and social media, and has made great strides in the UK since the Switch's launch last year. Long may it continue!”
They really are trying to turn things round. Compared to their previous ineptitude in the U.K. it really seems to be working. Well played Nintendo UK.
Incomplete. Missing the main information SSB Ultimate sold 62.5% more than Brawl, the best selling Smash game of all time.
@MysticX,
The Switch did pretty well in the U.S on both Black Friday and Cyber Monday,add this to the fact Nintendo consoles always do well over the Christmas period...I am still optamistic about that forcast.
Also we do not know what Nintendo have for the first quater in 2019,if they drop a big bomb like Animal crossing who knows?
Epic game! Totally deserves it! Well done Nintendo!
No surprise, the game is fantastic imho.
I said in previous comment that it will surpass the first week sales of Pokemon let's go from preorders alone. Remains to be seen how it will perform in the long run. I think Let's go may move more units at Xmas.
Japan will soon snatch this game up in the coming week.
@electrolite77
I believe it does.
I'd love to see the broader numbers. UK numbers are cool and all but it's such a different market for Nintendo than....most everywhere else. This bodes well overall, but I can't help but wonder how it compares to LGPikachu in the US and Japan.
Still seeing it topping RDR2 is a happy thought.
-UK is a Playstation Stronghold,
-Smaller install base,
-sold out at retail - people could not find it,
-Numbers do not include digital,
-sales do not matter,
Crazy how all the excuses people have to justify rehashed and "meh" games on Switch just went out the window.
All you need is an actual BIG game people excited to play - shocking 🤔😏
@Agramonte eh I think those excuses are still valid and smash sold well despite all of that. Admittedly I don’t follow the U.K. too much so I could be wrong, but I find it interesting they talked about how great the sales were percentage-wise compared to previous titles rather than just out right reporting numbers. Going through the comments it appears smash ultimate sold around 100-150 thousand units which is good, but it doesn’t seem astronomically large. For a frame of reference do you know what god of war numbers were during launch?
@westman98
Thanks. That suggests a very decent week of hardware sales as well given that a lot of stores were bundling it.
Friend of mine is fairly high up at a major U.K. retail chain and says it’s been a very good couple of weeks.
@PuppyToucher
God of War was below 100K, I’m pretty certain.
However it’s apples and oranges as GOW was selling to a much higher install base, but at a much quieter time of year.
@electrolite77
With regard to hardware numbers, the Switch sold 200,000 units in the UK during the 3 weeks consisting of Black Friday week, Cyber Monday week, and Smash Bros Ultimate's launch week. That is compared to 130,000 units sold during the same 3 week time period last year.
We could do with some actual sales figures now but there is evidence of a real turnaround in Nintendo’s U.K. sales. And I say that as someone very critical of their U.K. operations in the past.
I have a growing suspicion that those loud internet complainers who’ve been so critical of the Switch release schedule for various reasons may find that the wider world doesn’t agree.
@westman98
Cheers. Very positive.
Nintendo UK have earned it TBF.
@PuppyToucher I do not think it had actual UK numbers... I know gamebiz had
"Best selling GOW... and second biggest UK release this year, trailing just behind Far Cry 5."
Far Cry 5 was the best selling game period (until COD/RED2 came out) So yeah it was compared against all games released (Including Multiplats) not just against other GOW games.
I loved it myself and was not surprised it got GOTY.
I blame marketing
Smash Bros Ultimate sold ~1.3 million retail copies during its launch in Japan, making it the fastest-selling non-Pokemon Nintendo game ever.
@westman98 Yeah just read that, Famitsu preliminary figures clock it in at 1.3million copies in Japan alone. Hopefully we will see the corresponding Switch hardware boost to go along with it.
But crikey, that pretty much much 1.45 million if count the UK sales and physical only. The numbers must be well of 1.5million if you add in digital sales and that's two countries reporting....Great news
Ah well it will fall off a cliff next week, as they always say around these parts...
I have to say though, being a total Smash newbie, after banging out a few hours on it over the weekend I think it's fantastic, I had no idea what I was doing at first then it started to click. There is a ridiculous amount of things to do and meddle with, and it feels zippy navigating the interface too, not dissimilar to the Switch OS in fact.
One hell of a slick product.
I’m loving adventure mode
i am not surprised at all
