Nintendo Switch owners can look forward to Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order when it arrives exclusively on the platform in 2019. The game is being developed by Koei Tecmo Games/Team Ninja and will be published by Nintendo. The previous installment in this series was released nearly 10 years ago.
The full PR following the Game Awards reveal is below:
MARVEL ULTIMATE ALLIANCE 3: The Black Order brings together Super Heroes and Super Villains from across the Marvel Universe to battle for the limitless power of the Infinity Gauntlet, one Stone at a time. This unprecedented team of characters must use their unique superpowers to defeat the mad cosmic tyrant Thanos and his ruthless warmasters, The Black Order. The game will feature an original story and a playable cast of dozens of Marvel Super Heroes, including the Avengers, the X-Men, and—for the first time in series history—the Guardians of the Galaxy.
The new game features the same kind of action-RPG gameplay that made the franchise such a hit over a decade ago. In MARVEL ULTIMATE ALLIANCE 3: The Black Order, up to four players can drop in for co-op battles in a variety of ways: They can play online*, link up offline via local wireless or pass a Joy-Con controller to a friend to join the team. With another pair of Joy-Con (sold separately), four players can team up on one system. In addition to the series’ traditional perspective, the new entry will let players select a dynamic, zoomed-in heroic view, allowing for a more immersive play style for single-player or multiplayer when using multiple systems.
Are you a fan of Marvel? Will you be picking this up on release when it arrives on the Switch in 2019? Tell us below.

Easiest decision ever. Day 1, no doubt.
YES! This looks like so much fun. And exclusive?! Weird.
@imgrowinglegs That announcement blew my mind.
Wow. Is this a Bayonetta thing, where Nintendo got the exclusive by basically paying for its development?
Couldn't believe this. Leaping off the sofa. Lost my game of Smash but couldn't care less
YES!!!! Take my money!
I was really shocked when I saw this be a Switch exclusive. I'll be pre-ordering this from Amazon asap. Day 1 purchase. Good job Nintendo!
Great to see exclusive switch titles even if it’s not something I’m sure I’ll play.
Looks pretty good.
That’s the stuff.
And it’s Team Ninja? They are an immaculate dev team for combat-based games. Everything they touch is gold, from Nioh to Ninja Gaiden, Dead or Alive and even Fire Emblem Warriors/Hyrule Warriors (no wonder these are the best 2 Warriors games to date).
That really unexpected, great on Nintendo’s part. This and X-Men Legends series got me into Marvel back when I wasn’t really that into comic books
Woah. An exclusive? That's a big win for Nintendo
Looks fun, I enjoyed the first game on Wii. Speaking of, ports of 1 and 2 would be welcome.
2019 is gonna be just insane for the Switch.....insane. We know the Nintendo stuff will be awesome but if more 3rd party games like this Marvel game and Doom Eternal start filling out the lineup, I'll need a second job to buy all the games.
Wow, I really needed some news like this after the work day I just had. This looks all kind of fun.
Oh hell yeah! I am in!
Loved those games I'm thrilled about this
Will Nintendo have any say when Disney wants the game pulled like they keep doing with Marvel games?
Odd that 1+2 were taken off the digital stores earlier this year just for a new one to appear on a system that never had 1+2.
Still great though.
@Zeta Agreed.
Praise Hylia!!!! All my money you can have all my money. Nintendo won E3... oh wait um I can’t wait ok? This is one of my favorite franchises ever!
Here is hoping for a port of 1 and 2 but either way as soon as preorders open I am getting this.
I'm just glad the one team that Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite was missing is finally in this game. God rest your soul Stan Lee.
Bravo Nintendo. This is a perfect example of a third party exclusive that will actually get us excited.
Wow. Now this has me excited. And Switch exclusive? Double wow.
Not going to lie. I’m hype for this! MUA was one of my favorite games. Can’t believe they are finally making a 3rd and a Switch exclusive to boot! Day one.
I'll take this exclusive over Spiderman, honestly.
I remember playing the original on Wii! I’ll definitely look into this!
The game looks weak visually (because Team Ninja can do better), but since Nintendo is actually involved with Marvel, interest peaked
A massive crossover super-hero game that ISN'T just a fighting game?!
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE LET IT ACTUALLY BE GOOD!
I LOVED this series back in the day. I thought for sure it was a dead. Not only is it back, but it’s exclusive to Switch, wow, you just can’t know these days! Hype!
@JaxonH Everything they touch is gold? Well they did do Ninja Gaiden 3, Dead or Alive Volleyball, Dead or Aluve Extreme series, Metroid Other M and Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z which were OK to "please kill me" at best...so not exatcly gold! But I reckon this will be pretty good
I hope they have couch co-op just like the other two.
@Kevember Different developer plus Activision hardly bought their A game when it came to Wii. With this being published by Nintendo I expect higher things
@hadrian
Half those games were just fine for the type of game they were. Maybe not Z but, certainly the Dead or Alive Extreme and Metroid. Not familiar with NG3.
As for Metroid, I thought it was incredible. That being said, complaints have nothing to do with their talent as a team, but the direction took by Nintendo's director of Metroid series. The combat was great and flashy, it was just handicapped by Nintendo's insistent direction and utilization of the Wiimote.
And that's what they do best. Excellent combat. They know combat like Platinum Games knows combat. Sure, Platinum put out Legend of Korra and TMNT, Transformers and Star Fox, but Star Fox wasn't their norm, and the others were crippled by low budget B team effort. So no dev is 100% without mediocrity. That being said, when it comes to a combat focused game by Team Ninja, especially one published by Nintendo, I have the uttermost confidence it will be nothing short of spectacular.
@Kevember
Forgive me cause it was so long ago, but I thought a different studio handled the Wii port (someone correct me if I’m wrong) and it definitely was subpar to the other systems. I remember the waggling was very annoying. I expect a much better experience with this if Nintendo is producing it.
Shut up and take my Money!
Hands up anybody who saw this coming?
You with your hand up. Put it down, you’re lying. 😉
Spiderman? Is there Spiderman too?
Didn’t see that coming, well I’m definitely getting this.
Wasn't expecting Marvel Ultimate Alliance to count to three OR be a Nintendo Switch exclusive.
Looks like we'll get to relive MUA again all on the Switch and it's all thanks to..
Team Ninja?!?!
Great news! This will do next year even better for a lot of people.
This is awesome!
So I genuinely don't know anything about this franchise, can someone explain the gameplay? Is it like a warriors game?
Wowzers didn't realize its been ten years since the last one.
Well, I'm trading in Diablo now...
@StormtheFrontier It's a dungeon crawler but with marvel heroes.
If the game play is good I might get this.
Wow. Such a good trailer!
As a die hard PlayStation gamer , I'm super jealous xD game looks awesome.
Dayumm Nintendo, I see you! This is hype, who knew this franchise would make a comeback!
Don't think this one's likely for me but good news nonetheless. Nice to see the Switch landing some significant exclusives.
@Gravitron browns helmet..... automatic like from me.
Surprising to say the least, good surprise too ^_^
Just don't count on this being an exclusive for long. Koei Tecmo loves porting their stuff for easy money and I want to point out that Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge was also an exclusive for WiiU... for like 4 months lol
Nintendo being the publisher means it is possible that this game will be a lifetime Switch exclusive, or at least exclusive for longer than just a few months.
I'm not into super heroes whatsoever so I'll probably skip this but damn this is a pretty big one for Nintendo in getting this one as a Switch exclusive. And from the looks of it, people are certainly happy about this one. Good for the fans!
@hadrian
Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge was pretty awesome though. They redeemed themselves with the update
Here's Looking at you ps4 at 4K .... lol....
Hype, i have wanted this for years!!!🙌🤯
@TeslaChippie Does that mean Nintendo IP inspired costumes too? That would be awesome!
This is definitely a day one buy for me!
Have to say that this looks amazing. Another game added to the list for 2019
@Angelic_Lapras_King
Maybe licensing issues since the first two were made by actionvision
@JaxonH
Star fox was nintendo made ,but asked for platinum help to have the be ready for release near the end of production. So most of the fault with the company who made most of it
I enjoyed the first one of this series and enjoyed it, so I will probably give this a try. it would be nice if they are able to remaster the first two games as well (even though that is unlikely)....
Absolutely day one for me and finally Nintendo is investing to get exclusives like this on the Switch.
Just like Sony with Spiderman this is a HUGE win for Ninty as many people would never expect a sequel of an Alliance game.
Well done indeed.
@Arnold-Kage Probably, though the PS4/XBONE remasters werent even that old before the plug was pulled. Thank god I brought the XBONE version the last time they got a discount. XD
@Angelic_Lapras_King
Lucky you then
Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja? I clearly remember Vicarious Visions being the developers of 1 and 2. Nintendo publishing? Activision was the publisher of those 2 as well. Who has the rights of the franchise then? When the developer AND the publisher are completely different 10 years later, is Marvel the only common ground here? I really hope they nail the very fun and longlasting gameplay.
definitely day one
I don’t really care about super heroes but this looks awesome. I think this game will be great for Switch since many people still undervalue the system. Kudos. I can’t wait to try this out.
First thought: Made by Team Ninja, Published by Nintendo is not words I expected to be attached to Ultimate Alliance.
Second Thought: they've pulled an MVC: Infinite again, its the MCU + Wolverine again.
@TeslaChippie Not sure.. It sounds like that might be the case or it might be just an exclusive (like Daemon X Machina). If they own the rights (making it first party), I'd say Nintendo financed it.
This looks like a lot of fun.
Now put a Marvel character in Smash.
What a welcome surprise! Tuned in for Metroid got Marvel. Metroid hype can wait.
Wow, a new MUA after all those years and it's a Switch exclusive? Did someone sacrifice both Nightcrawler and Jane Grey for it? It's the game I was thinking about lately, because of Diablo 3.
I loved and still have atleast 2 this series so much though I did end up using cheat codes for reasons, but I hope this game has a lot more then the seeable heroes in the video.
@Angelic_Lapras_King that charmander really throws me off when reading your name.
Of course it's about the Infinity Gauntlet. Gotta milk that sudden movie relevance. Although it is the most powerful artifact in the Marvel Universe (with the Cosmic Cube being a close second), and Thanos one of the most powerful Marvel villains (right behind Galactus probably, though Galactus himself isn't the number 1 threat), but I am a bit tired of that Marvel tendency to retread old stories just because they were recently adapted into movies.
I find it funny that a few years back, when Rocket Raccoon was added to Marvel vs Capcom 3, everyone (myself included) went "who the heck is Rocket Raccon?" and now he's almost as big as the X-Men.
Damn! I was sooooo excited for this until I read:
"The game is being developed by Koei Tecmo Games/Team Ninja."
Now I know it'll be unfinished, with a ridiculous amount of overpriced DLC, because that's what they do.
@Angelic_Lapras_King Probably guaging interest for a remaster of the first two
Day one and massive news.
Who will make the roster... obviously from that vid we get a decent list...
Hopefully we get some not in the connected movies universe...
Blade, Punisher both would be on my hope they make it...
With a game like this it sometimes become about the smaller unexpected characters that you end up most wanting... but like smash
@RainbowGazelle If you’re talking about DoA 5, that wasn’t because the game was unfinished, but they have to fund the work put in to design all those costumes somehow. There is an insane amount of extra costumes; we can’t expect them to be free
@SmaggTheSmug They said it has an original story, so probably won’t follow the movie script much
@Dahn_ Yeah I just hope they improve the level design, some of them just felt too damn long
@BlueMage And maybe a crossover of other Marvel properties with Nintendo
@SHULZ021 Yeah that’s pretty crazy. Time flies
@Tasuki They already confirmed they do
wow this is a big scoop for the Switch. I wonder if its just a timed exclusive tho and will appear on the ps4 xb1. If its popular I cant see it not
@electrolite77 It’s completely out of left field
Hardly an ultimate alliance if there's no Batman.
Great news. EA can keep their ports.
Oh yessss! This news madr me happy.
i am a big marvel fan.
I really liked these games and lost it when i saw the gameplay
This completely blindsided me! Out of nowhere! I poured so many hours into the original on PS2 and loved every minute. Diablo-esque dungeon crawler based in the MCU? What's not to love?
Just for kicks, I stopped by IGN to see the rage posts. It's pretty funny. It's so salty over there saying things like, "well the graphics are trash anyway." Lololol, just say you need to buy a Switch now, just say it.
Had decided I would be getting this before I even watched he trailer. I loved the previous 2 games.... which I am now going to download again and replay ha ha ha
The biggest surprise for my family last night wasn't seeing the game on Switch, we played all of those games way back when, but seeing Wolverine pop up in a Marvel game.
For those who haven't been following the movies, or games, of late, there is a big no man's land divide between mutants and non-mutants over in Marvel land. Even Marvel vs Capcom Infinite excluded the X-Men last year, despite them being a big part of the series.
So yeah, it's great the game is being made, but Wolverine is back from eXile in a Marvel game, that's the big news for us Marvel geeks.
Wowza!!!!! This is one of the best game announcements that I didn't see coming in my lifetime of playing video games. Awesome. I can't wait to share this series with my two sons!
In my perspective this game doesn't look as good as the other 2 it looks more of a colorful less detail, jumble. I'm not saying because its on the switch it looks bad i'm saying is it looks awesome just not as detail as the other game like a under grade than an upgrade.
@sikthvash
You cant be serious
@Antraxx777 Also all the Warriors games, unfortunately.
@Gravitron I rarely am, why should I be so serious? =0p
Marvel on Nintendo and DC on Sony.
now bring a Injustice like game of marvel on the switch. Or a Nintendo VS Marvel kinda game lol. Samus vs Captain marvel. Captain Falcon vs Captain america, Starfox team against the guardians of galaxy, the incredible Hulk vs?? Mario? Lol.
@Zeta
same here, day one!
@MoonKnight7
hahaha this comment, love it.
Is there a complete list of who is in it? It'd be nice if Punisher was in it, but highly doubt it. Guess I'll stick with Wolverine til further notice lol
Just take my money already.
This kinda makes me think it is safe to dream of an Xmen Legends 3. I love MUA but Xmen is what makes me a marvel fangirl (even if the stories are lost in the ether) so I would like to see the world's best mutants get their own game again. (I'd also like to see an agents of SHIELD game, but that's just me.)
I'm just happy that there's X-Men representation on this game. Disney has been trying their darnedest to make Fox-held properties irrelevant in Marvel games (see: Lego Marvel Superheroes 2). Looks like the Fox buyout fixed that "hatred" for mutant characters.
