@h3s Hate to break this to you, but Super Play was also sent free review copies back in the day. "Getting something for nothing" has no impact on reviews - hence the fact that we dish out plenty of negative scores for games we get sent review code for.
And I haven't recommended this display for Switch 2 owners - read the final paragraph.
@The_Nintendo_Pedant Lots of younger players won't have grown up with arcade games like you I did, and may be disappointed with the short nature of this kind of game.
Never assume every reader has your knowledge and experience.
We didn't get review code ahead of release, so we're playing it at the same time as everyone else. Given that it's such a massive game, we're taking our time with the review.
This Genki product arrived in the office several weeks ago.
@Greenmanalishi Are we forgetting that Mario and Sonic have starred in multiple video games together and that Sonic (as well as several other non-Nintendo characters) are in Smash Bros.? Like the article clearly says, this is probably nothing, but to say it's "impossible" is a stretch. People were saying that before Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, right?
@Vordus I still remember the day I got my GP32 and was blown away by the fact that I could play Master System and PC Engine games on alternative hardware. We've certainly come a long way since then when it comes to emulation!
@Tasuki A) We've been running leftfield and oddball pieces like this ever since the site was established, so I'm not sure what you're talking about there. Not every article has to be a straight news story.
B) No "higher up" at Hookshot puts pressure on any staff member to write stuff they don't want to. We've never done this, and never will.
C) Hookshot hasn't been bought out by anyone - we're still independent. A minority share in the company was inherited by Ziff Davies when it acquired Gamer Network.
Hope this clears things up, and remember: not everything needs to be so serious. 😃
@Yosti I haven't done a proper test yet, but it "feels" similar to (if not slightly better) than the standard LCD model. OLED panels are supposed to be less power-hungry, so that would make sense.
@PessitheMystic All three games have previously been reviewed on the site, so I didn't have much context to add there. As for the features of each set, I've outlined what's included in each package and given a selection of photos to give a taste for what you get. I didn't want to photograph every inch of the contents as people might want to have something to look forward to if / when they eventually order these.
@DarkTron Each article is covering a different element of Nintendo's latest financial report, rather than lumping them all into a single article, where it would be harder to focus / highlight each point. Remember that a lot of people hit these articles via Google / social and headlines matter. We can't cover every single key point from the report in one headline.
Given that this is a Nintendo-focused site, I think it's justified that we give each of these very important points room to breathe.
@sanderev There are absolutely people in the world who will think they don't need a Switch because they can play games on their phone, yes. Hence the constant comparisons between the absolutely massive smartphone gaming market and the market for dedicated games consoles by Nintendo shareholders
Not saying smartphone games are better, by the way, but there's definitely competition between the two sectors when it comes to certain players.
@sanderev The fact that when I leave the house, I have to decide to take my Aya Neo or Switch is what makes them competitors. No one is expecting the Aya Neo to gobble up Nintendo's market share, but the two devices are mainly used for playing games on the go, so they're in competition with one another. That doesn't mean the two can't co-exist in the market.
@Bunkerneath Not at all. NL will still cover retro, and there will most likely be some overlap between the two sites. TE's remit goes way beyond just covering Nintendo stuff... it will cover arcade games, home computer games, perhaps even board games and other related stuff as well.
@RubyCarbuncle There's still a lot you have to do manually in PGO. Powering up your monsters, taking part in raids, battling other monsters to control gyms, etc. This is really more about convenience, as there are times when you can't be looking at your phone 24/7.
The Japanese cover is so much better this should really be no contest, but judging from the results so far, it seems not everyone agrees with me!
I remember seeing Leynos on the shelf of my local import store in the early '90s, and I wanted it so badly, but I never picked it up. I didn't get a copy until the latter part of the decade, and it remains one of my favourite Mega Drive covers. That mech design is amazing.
@aznable True, but it depends if they choose to focus on Rondo or SotN with this, as he's not in the former. But yes, there's a connection there at least!
@Bunkerneath Your posts were removed because they were totally unconstructive.
You're more than welcome to calmly explain why you don't believe this particular rumour to be true (and it is marked as a rumour, lest we forget), just try and be a little more eloquent about it.
@Fizza It's set at a later time, but there might be references / connections. To be honest, the games are barely connected anyway, so they could easily do their own thing here (and without Warren Ellis doing the script, I imagine this will be a LOT different in tone).
@Chocobo_Shepherd It's totally unofficial, and most people are likely to play this via emulation. However, given that it has happened with other unofficial fan games in the past, I'd imagine someone will end up putting it on a physical cartridge as well.
@smithyo Comment moderation is all about keeping things on track. We're excited about this game, and we want to share that with our readers. Comments which basically come in to dunk on coverage with no good reason aren't doing this section any service (or you, the reader), so we'll cut 'em out.
As for the game, I'm actually blown away by how good it is, and how the core mechanic rewards repeat play and skill. I just wish Konami had given them the Gradius licence so they could have avoided that awful title!
@smithyo I'm sorry you feel that we're not covering the games you feel we should - let us know what titles you think we've ignored and we'll do our best to remedy that. At the end of the day, we're still a small team here, and we can't cover everything - Drainus is being highlighted because A) it's great, and B) the publisher has a track record of supporting Switch and has said it is looking into a Switch port.
If people would rather we didn't highlight interesting games that are almost certain to come to Switch, then they don't need to waste time reading the article and posting a useless comment.
