Re: OLED Display Firm Mentions 'Switch Pro' During Its Q1 Investors Call

Damo

@rjejr "Why did you cut it off, for space, or for misdirection?"

How is it misdirection when the sentence immediately before it clearly states that he's talking about 'reports'? Not my fault you skim-read the piece.

"Remember that article you wrote reviewing all of those portable screens that the Switch can be plugged directly into, but you reviewed them w/o actually plugging your Switch into them, you plugged your dock into them, which defeats the main purpose of plug in screens your Switch can plug into, like all of the pictures you posed showed?"

The fact that you bring up unrelated stuff like this up proves you're itching for some kind of confrontation, and I'm at a loss as to why that might be the case? But fine, here goes.

The images used in that round-up were supplied by the manufacturer and as I didn't have any means of taking decent photos myself at that point, I used them. I'd tested the screens with a dock because I'm super-cautious about that kind of thing, and the editor's note was added after you (and others) pointed this out. That's what's great about online journalism - you can amend and update pieces if anyone is confused or things aren't clear, which is what happened in that case. What relevance that has with the topic at hand I'm not sure.

"And besides, you start way more battles w/ me than I start w/ you. You know there is an Ignore button right?"

Thanks for reminding me!

Re: OLED Display Firm Mentions 'Switch Pro' During Its Q1 Investors Call

@rjejr "When I read this sentence fragment that was posted in the article I certainly thought a new Switch called "Switch Pro" was coming, but when you add in the 13 words that were cut, I suppose for space 😉 it sounds more like just another report on rumours."

Did you not read the bit before that?

"During Universal Display Corp's recent Q1 investors call (thanks, Spawn Wave), reports regarding the new Switch model using an OLED panel were referenced."

And as @bloodninja says, the original tweet is in there with the passage highlighted.

This is an investors call, too. I doubt they would reference anything in these calls that they weren't pretty sure about. Given the nature of the company's business, I think it's fair to say they would be able to make a judgment call on any reports relating to OLED panel orders.

Re: Thanks To Switch, Nintendo Has Now Sold Over Half A Billion Handheld Consoles

Damo

@rjejr Nobody is adding up the home and handheld console figures - that's a leap you've made yourself. Because the Switch is both a handheld AND a home console, it can be included in the lists for both categories. That doesn't mean you then add those lists up to create a grand total - that was never suggested.

'500 million handhelds sold' includes the Switch, because it's a handheld console. Guess what? It's also a home console, so you can include it in that list, too. To deny it a place in either of those lists is to go against Nintendo's own stance that Switch serves both sectors.

Re: Thanks To Switch, Nintendo Has Now Sold Over Half A Billion Handheld Consoles

Damo

@Razer You're missing the point here (and the Super GB example? That was an accessory, not a stand-alone system).

The Switch isn't designed to be one or the other, and as I said, the Wii U proves the company was thinking of ways to create a system that straddles both markets. Given that there are many people who only play docked and many who only play handheld, it would seem that Nintendo has been successful in that respect. If what you were saying is true, surely no one would just play docked?

You say that the Switch is primarily a handheld - why then is it hosting AAA home console titles, such as launch game BotW, which was also released on the Wii U? Why is it getting games which, normally, would be exclusive to a home system? Because it's no longer a question of being a 'home' or 'portable' machine - Switch is both.

It's a really, really simple concept when you think about it.

Re: Thanks To Switch, Nintendo Has Now Sold Over Half A Billion Handheld Consoles

Damo

@Razer How do you explain the fact that additional power is added when playing via the dock, then? If it was as simple as you say - a portable that connects to the TV and nothing more - then surely it would output the same resolution/frame rate to the TV as it does in portable mode?

It's clear to me that Nintendo has focused on hitting both markets with Switch, and that the Wii U was a 'first try' at creating a hybrid. The Switch is the full realisation of the concept - not just "a portable console that you can also play on your TV".

Re: Thanks To Switch, Nintendo Has Now Sold Over Half A Billion Handheld Consoles

Damo

@Malanta7 A home console that's just a home console cannot compete in the handheld market, though, because it isn't portable. So combining home and handheld sales to set them against the sales of the Switch doesn't make sense, because, unlike Switch, the NES / SNES / N64 etc were never intended to be portable.

The Switch does both, so it can be compared to both because it's intended to be both. That's the distinction here.

Re: Thanks To Switch, Nintendo Has Now Sold Over Half A Billion Handheld Consoles

Damo

@Westlondonmist Exactly, it replaces both the Wii U ) and 3DS and puts all of Nintendo's eggs in one basket. I know people who only play handheld (I'm one of them, TBH) and I know people who only play docked (@antdickens for example). The Switch ticks both boxes, so it's fair to say it's competing in both the handheld and home console markets (the former of which it effectively has to itself these days).

I'm not sure why this topic is triggering people so much, to be honest! It's not a tricky concept to understand... get yourself a console that does both!

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo's Apex Legends: Legacy 'Gameplay Overview' Trailer Is Questionable

Damo

@Friendly I'd certainly say that there's a big enough performance gap between Switch and the other systems to justify a trailer that shows what the Switch version actually looks like (I've played Apex Legends on Xbox One and Series X and they look so similar to me I couldn't really tell any difference).

And it seems EA / Nintendo think this, too, as the Nintendo version of that trailer runs at 30fps, not 60fps, while the resolution is 1080p (the other version goes all the way up to 4K). They've just done a lazy recode on the original footage in an attempt to get closer to what it would look like on Switch, but it's still false advertising.

And what difference does it make being free to play? The game is still designed to make money via IAPs, so a misleading trailer is only going to rope more people in and potentially earn more cash.

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo's Apex Legends: Legacy 'Gameplay Overview' Trailer Is Questionable

Damo

@Friendly Not sure what you watched but it sure looked like there was plenty of gameplay in the trailer to me? It's hardly a cinematic cutscene showcase, is it? It's all done in-engine, and lots of people who skip past the easily-missed disclaimer (I have young kids, they do this) is going to assume that it will look like that when they download it on their Switch (again, I have young kids, they do this!)

Given the huge performance difference between the Switch and the Series X and PS5 (and even the Xbox One and PS4), I don't think it's entirely unreasonable to ask a multi-million dollar company to get someone to take actual capture of the console in question for a trailer that's intended to rake in lots and lots of money. But maybe that's me being unrealistic.

Re: Watch Out Animal Crossing, Haven Park Is Headed To Switch

Damo

@Tops It certainly wasn't an attempt to cast the game in a negative light; as I said, it's clearly just a bit of light-hearted fun.

Also, while the game looks like a Short Hike, the gameplay appears to be more akin to AC, hence the comparison (building a park, chatting with animal characters, collecting resources, etc).

Comparisons are handy when you're writing snappy headlines because they allow you to quickly communicate to the reader what a game might be like, based on a game they're almost certain to have experience with. That's why most sites (not just us) compare things to other things, be they games, movies, books or TV shows.

Re: Random: Boy Has To Choose Between Nintendo Switch And Pizza, Chooses Pizza

Damo

@Tsusasi Thanks for the kind comments! We tend to ignore the negative comments on these stories because we've always picked out random and fun news pieces that are more about "Nintendo popular culture" than "Nintendo news". We'll keep doing them, too, because they're as much fun to write as they (hopefully) are to read!
