Re: Video: Analysing The Performance Of The Switch OLED Versus The OG Switch

Damo

For everyone claiming this is obvious, it's worth noting that, like any consumer product, Switch has evolved over its lifespan. This process was touched upon in Nintendo's recent developer interview about the OLED model, and how even common components change over time as production systems improve and evolve. There are numerous cases of consumer products (phones, tablets, TVs, cars) getting parts changed which result in different performance - even when the company which makes it doesn't advertise it as such.

While we've known that the chipset would be the same, other parts - such as memory - might also have changed, and this can sometimes lead to slight gains in terms of memory access speed and load times. So, we felt that this was worth putting to the test.

Re: PSA: Please Don't Forget To Transfer Your Animal Crossing: New Horizons Island To Your Switch OLED

Damo

@RupeeClock "So there's this brief period where the target system will have all save data, except for the ACNH island?"

As I understand it, yes. The issue I had was that my daughter had my old system and started her own game of AC, which then wiped my island from the console, so I couldn't transfer.

Had she not done that, I imagine the island would have remained and I could have transferred it over when I realised it hadn't been ported during the standard system transfer.

@BloodNinja Even in death, a person's flaws are still flaws. Everyone has them, and acknowledging them (just as we acknowledge their positive points) isn't 'hate speech'.

So far the comments have been just the right side of acceptable, so please don't fan the flames and make them worse.

Re: Teardown Suggests The Switch OLED Dock Is 4K 60fps-Ready And 'Future Proof'

@Heavyarms55 (Sorry for the double-reply here, only just seen this other message)

"I'm sure we will, eventually, see a Switch Pro or Switch 2. I think Nintendo would be absolutely insane not to continue the line. But with the Switch OLED coming out soon, I wouldn't expect anything else for, at the VERY LEAST, a full year."

I agree with you 100% - I can't see the Pro model coming until at least the end of 2022, if not early 2023. Which is exactly why we're seeing reports of developers working on 4K dev kits, the dock being updated 'behind the scenes' and Nintendo working on upscaling tech. No one is suggesting the Pro is going to release next week - it's clearly some way off.

Re: Teardown Suggests The Switch OLED Dock Is 4K 60fps-Ready And 'Future Proof'

@Silly_G The idea is that you use clever tech (like that mentioned in the Nintendo patent) to upscale the image, so the console isn't actually producing a pure 4K signal. Point taken on the fact that the current Switch struggles to do 1080p a lot of the time, but by using upscaling systems a new Switch could output a 4K signal, for sure.

@Heavyarms55 Speaking for Eurogamer – who we work very closely with – I can assure you that isn't the case, at all. I know the news team there very well and I'm aware of how careful they are when it comes to backing up their reports by speaking to their own sources. You may famously recall that people were saying the same things when EG reported on the Switch / NX reports that it would be based on Nvidia tech and would feature removable controllers (reports we were also able to verify using our own sources).

I personally believe Nintendo is working on a 4K Switch, hence the reports of 4K dev kits, 4K functionality being built into existing products (like the dock) and Nintendo's recent patent for upscaling. I also highly suspect that Nintendo's plans for a 4K-ready Switch were impacted by the chip shortage.

Given that Nintendo has a history of iterating its hardware (look the GBA, DS and 3DS for example) I'm not sure why there's so much scepticism regarding this, but I can appreciate that many people are tired of rumours.

Re: Review: Castlevania Advance Collection - Utterly Essential Thanks To Aria Of Sorrow

Damo

@rushiosan The N64 Castlevanias, while not fantastic, are still more interesting than Dracula X. The first Lords of Shadow isn't half bad, either, as long as you're not expecting a traditional Castlevania game.

Dracula X is terribly designed, removes all of the good stuff from the PCE original and has one of the most frustrating final boss battles in any Castlevania game - IMO, at least

Re: Former Mario Movie Star John Leguizamo Isn't Happy With The Casting On The New Film

Damo

@Spider-Kev A reboot suggest that the new movie has some link with the original, when in fact the only thing they have in common is the fact that they're based in the same (non-movie) series.

It's like saying Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings movies were a 'reboot' of the Ralph Bakshi 1978 animated movie. It's simply not the case. This is another adaptation of the Super Mario universe, but it's not a reboot of the 1993 film.

Re: Rumour: Nintendo Will Expand Its Switch Online Service With Game Boy And Game Boy Color Titles

Damo

@sanderev You understand that internal plans change? Like when Sega created two different versions of the Dreamcast before picking one to go into production? Does the fact that one of them didn't get made mean that it was a 'false' rumour? Of course not.

Just because we haven't seen Switch Pro yet doesn't mean that plans weren't progressing to produce one earlier than now. It's been reasoned that the success of the Switch - combined with COVID / parts issues - could have contributed to Nintendo shelving plans for more powerful hardware at this moment in time. Given how many sources were coming forward not so long ago - sources which were involved in the supply chain - we were confident enough to run the rumours.

Like I said, I feel our track record is good and we're more than happy to hold our hands up when rumours we've reported on prove to be false, but we're very careful about what rumours we do cover.

Re: Rumour: Nintendo Will Expand Its Switch Online Service With Game Boy And Game Boy Color Titles

Damo

@sanderev If you look at any area of journalism, protecting sources is commonplace. A source only gives you information in the understanding that they won't be revealed. Obviously, if the source is a random person you've never interacted with before then you're more skeptical, but our sources tend to be trusted individuals with a track record of being correct.

Whenever we report on rumours, we try to be as sure as possible about the source. In this case, we've heard from another source about GB / GBC coming to Switch, which is why we decided to cover Nate's report.

A site which posts nothing but false rumours isn't going to survive for very long, but skeptics is only natural and we've been here before - like when we reported on the Switch rumours prior to its reveal, for example.
