For all of Nintendo's faults, I'm glad they remember the foundational rule that exclusives sell consoles. No matter how hard Xbox suits try to tell you otherwise, the proof is in the company's rapidly declining reputation: no exclusives means no reason to buy your consoles. I just hope that Sony remembers this before too much more damage is done to them as well.
Out of curiosity, does it say what the best selling game of the year overall is? I'm at work and can't watch the video.
It should be a surprise to no one that Pokémon is selling well though. I'm about 20ish hours into Z-A and while I think I like Legends Arceus far more, this one isn't bad. The franchise desperately needs voice acting though.
@jfp My thoughts exactly. I started the trailer earlier, saw it was 7 minutes, and stopped less than a minute in. I wanna preserve as much of the experience as possible.
I can't wait to play this. Hades 1 is one of my favorite games ever made and from what people are saying Hades 2 is even better. Only thing that would make this release better is if it were out today but I'll accept it as a late birthday present lol
I'm not gonna hold you, I fully thought it was gonna be $80. I'm still not buying them (at BEST I'd get Galaxy 2 down the line) but my shock comes from them being cheaper than i expected.
Next thing we'll hear is Square Enix talking about how the Switch 2 version didn't meet sales demands so they're not making games for it anymore, ignoring the fact that their ridiculous practices caused this. Fck them.
I'm indifferent to most of this. Every person who I've seen talk about their console being "bricked" has been stupid about their pirating and is now suffering from FAFO, but I'm not gonna go to bat for the billion dollar company to have total control over a console I bought either. I'll just be watching this unfold while I wait to buy more Switch 2 games.
@Medic_alert To be fair, back then that wasn't an awful amount of sales. In fact, a quick Google tells me SA2B sold around as much as Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door and that just got a remake last year. It wouldn't be a ridiculous move for them to release even a relatively simple remaster, especially if they tried to capitalize on the third Sonic movie which essentially is just a SA2 movie anyway.
It's a baffling and frankly asinine decision to not capitalize on something that is almost guaranteed to be a hit if done right, but whatever. If they won't remake the games at least put the Gamecube versions on NSO. My Wii is finally starting to wear down and I don't wanna lose access to SA1 and SA2.
Maybe its a blessing in disguise that the Switch 2 boxes are so hideous; it makes it easier to deal with the lack of physical games when you don't want those boxes on the shelf anyway.
S/V is such a conundrum to me. The way they run should not and is not acceptable in any form, but I'd be lying if I said that I didn't have a lot of fun with them. There's the skeleton of an amazing game there, but its clear that the lack of time in the oven drags it down. All we can do is hope that Z-A is evidence that Gamefreak is loosening the reigns a bit.
I'm avoiding all code-in-a-box games like the plague. If you're too lazy and cheap to AT LEAST give us a game key card I'm too lazy and cheap to spend my money with you.
I really want this whole thing to be tossed out but I know it won't. Palworld is a lazy and frankly antagonistic mess made by people who think games need to be filled with guns and faux gritty realism to be "for adults", and Nintendo is being typical litigious Nintendo. I'm not rooting for either.
I'm most excited about Prime 4, but Pokémon Legends Arceus brought me back to the franchise so I'm looking forward to what Z-A brings as well. I hope both are cross-gen so they can look and run as good as possible.
I've played a handful of these (and am looking to buy two more based off what I've read here and heard elsewhere). If anyone reading the comments is interested at all in Metroidvanias or classic JRPGs I highly recommend Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown and Sea of Stars respectively. Both have some stumbles with their story but the visuals and gameplay in both are top notch.
I feel like I would be a lot more critical of the whole "not owning your games" thing if I didn't still have my Wii and Wii U (and 3DS for that matter) with my purchased games. Cuz NGL buying Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time for the fourth time does NOT sound appealing so I appreciate NSO letting me avoid that.
Like most things Team Asobi does, this felt really heartfelt and appreciative. I'm so glad they won GOTY and I can't wait to see what Astro Bot 2 looks like.
(SN: I never really understood people using the Mario comparisons as a negative. Platformers are always gonna be compared to Mario like how kart racers are always gonna be compared to Mario Kart. When you solidify a genre that's kinda what happens.)
It's unfortunately too late to save the studio with good sales numbers, but if you're a fan of Metroidvanias you should still get this if you can. It's a really solid game; one of my favorites this year.
I had a friend in middle school who SWORE by these games. The way he talked about them made me wanna try them out, but I never got the chance. This may be that chance.
It really depends on how they approach a handheld. If its on par or even close to the power of their home consoles and you can just now play portably, maybe, but unfortunately they've trained their audiences to expect power first and foremost so if they're not powerful handhelds I think they'll be DOA.
Honestly it SHOULD just be a more powerful Switch but I know Nintendo's gonna Nintendo. I could see camera and mic support tho, maybe we finally get native voice chat?
I maintain my stance that until we get a firm date for Prime 4 there's still a chance we get 2 and 3 Remastered. If we find out exactly when Prime 4 is coming and the remasters aren't announced/out soon after that...well just go on and dust off those Wiis lol
Sony pulled that extra 5 million out they ass and its honestly kinda sad. The PS2 has been at 155 million for a decade but suddenly with the Switch within 10 million of surpassing it they all of a sudden sold 160 million? Yea. Sure.
@nessisonett Bc then they would have to admit that their crusade isn't actually about game quality (bc this game is pretty good), but purely about punishing games with "wokeness".
This sucks. The Lost Crown was a really good game that was tanked by the Ubisoft name and grifters. It had unique mechanics and played so smoothly. NGL, with this and the news about Tales of Kenzera I'm super frustrated.
That's the thing though, Zau DID stand out and it got lambasted by bigots bc of it. And unfortunately unlike Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown (which got hate for similar reasons) it didn't have a big franchise name or budget to offset some of that.
He's 1000% right. We just saw with a game that starts with a C and ends with oncord how trying to force a live service game can be a VERY costly mistake, but these companies are so starved for profit that they'll keep making the same mistakes in hopes that it will go right for them one day. It's the same thing with shows and movies nowadays as well: anything that's not immediately a billion dollar hit is garbage so they'll keep wasting money on "proven success" until they luck up and make one.
@Duncanballs I think there's a lot more that people loved about the older games than just the dungeons (tho they are def a part of it). Like Wind Waker is almost universally loved (now) but its dungeons are pretty weak. My issue is that people seem to be making the argument that traditional dungeons = good game and that's not really true.
That said I do agree with your comment that there's room for both. I've long since believed that the traditional formula would live on in the 2D games while the 3D games would be more open, and I hope Echoes of Wisdom is evidence of that.
I feel like people really overhype "traditional" dungeons. I mean I'm enjoying the ones in this game so far (I'm like four dungeons in) but people pretending that they elevate the quality of the game SO MUCH or are these brainwracking puzzles are overselling them.
The world changed. People can either keep up or get left behind. Whining about it does no real good other than invite the worst possible people to call you "based" and treat you like the exception.
@jesse_dylan I'm actually super surprised at the complaints about the combat, because I and a good number of the early reviews felt like that was the most unique thing about it (with the music and visuals being the best things).
Wow never knew so many people apparently hated Sea of Stars. The leads were pretty bland and the story wasn't as strong as I would've liked, but I still enjoyed it quite a bit and it's the most recent game to make me cry (IYKYK).
That said, it's kinda wild that a new game is being heralded as like Sea of Stars instead of like Chrono Trigger. Apparently I'm old AF 😅. Excited to see how Forge of the Fae turns out.
Lol apparently Nintendo Life also predicted my real life movement bc I just spent like 10 mins riding a dragon into the depths, around it, and back out again while being shocked at how seamless it was. Over 300 hours later and I still love and am in awe of this game.
I've been thinking May 2025 myself. Early enough to put some time between launch and next holiday season but late enough to squeeze the last bit of life from this holiday without pissing people off.
@Zeebor15 Sadly (or maybe fortunately in this case?) they probably didn't get new jobs since the whole industry is in flux right now. Other comments have said that the director of Hi-Fi Rush is back so he probably did send everyone an email telling them they could come back lol
Amazing news! I played Hi-Fi Rush on PS5 and absolutely loved it. Glad to see that the team behind it has a place to call home again.
On the topic of a Switch port though, IDK if that would be the best way to play TBH. The game can get pretty hectic and visually demanding. Switch 2 maybe.
As a Switch backer it's already been kinda frustrating to see the game out but not being able to play it despite having paid already. I honestly don't know why we didn't get the option for a key change before now when it's been on other consoles for at least a few months. It's a messed up situation bc no one is happy RN.
