@PikminMarioKirby Indeed, Super Mario Party launched with 126k copies and Superstars with 163k copies. The biggest retail launches in the franchise were Mario Party 8 with 282k and DS with 242k. So with digital this one should be the biggest launch in the franchise.
@somnambulance P3R and Metaphor probably have a very similar digital share abd since retail copies havevpnly a difference of 8k they are already in the same boat.
But when it comes to P5 it's not even close. It'd need a 70% digital share to be on par with Persona 5's retail launch sales of 344k, which is not the case. P5R launched at 201k retail, so also significantly higher and in 2019 digital in Japan was already groing steadily and not as much of a non factor as it was in 2016.
@SwitchplayerJohn Doubtful, since Next Level Games are in Canada and this game has been developed in part by some of the old developers formerly from Alphadream which was in Japan. Unless NLG did some support work on the animations.
@DestructoDisk Nintendo lies to it's customers about laws? Did they make some kind of official statement claiming any and all emulation is illegal? No they didn't.
The complaints here make no sense. Nintendo don't have a problem with emulators existing. They have an issue with people emulating their products and them not making a profit off of that. Aren't like all NSO games emulated? Super Mario 3D All-Stars was almost completely emulated.
Weren't the virtual console games emulated?
And now it's a problem???
This is not a "rules for thee, but not for me" thing. It's their own game. They can do with it whatever they want.
@1UP-HUSKY There are like eleven Wii U ports published by Nintendo (MK8DX, Pokken Tournament DX, DKCTF, Hyrule Warriors DE, Bayonetta 1 and 2, Captain Toad, NSMBUDX, Tokyo Mirage Sessions, Pikmin 3 Deluxe, SM3DW+BF) and a couple more published by others like Lego City Undercover, Fatal Frame 5 and The Wonderful 101.
It's a tiny number compared to the thousands of games available on the Switch.
Mario and Zelda games getting high scores regularly is impressive and not something that makes this less impressive.
@Serpenterror I mean Daybreak 2 released 2 years ago in Japan. They had a year off for Ys X last year.
@Maubari The term is "gatekeep".
@fenlix Traditional Zeldas have been big hits in Japan. It was just a much longer time ago. Ocarina of Time sold 1.76 million copies in Japan and the first three Zelda's were also all million sellers and Phantom Hourglass sold almost a million in Japan.
@LavenderShroud I remember when Splatoon 3 did this "Type 1" and "Type 2" thing so many people here on Nintendolife were praising Nintendo for being inclusive, progressive etc etc. As if this was the most important change from the previous games.
@axelhander For that the law would need to significantly change. It would likely be a long process that would be fought by basically all publishers because it would likely mean that the purchaser would be allowed to copy a game as much as they want and resell the copies as they please.
Regardless, you basically confirmed what I thought. It's exclusively always online games that when shut down don't work anymore for the player. Most of the games you mentioned were free to play. A game that you can play offline just fine won't get removed from your library. They shut servers down when they don't have enough players anymore to make a profit or whatever tf Super Mario Bros. 35 was but that doesn't happen with normal games.
@axelhander That doesn't make any sense because when a game gets removed from the eshop or any storefront you still keep your digital copy. They don't take it away from you. Or has there been a case where that happened? Where a game disappeared from your console, even a single player game.
@Tempestryke That has nothing to do with the game being digital or physical. You could buy a physical copy of an online only game. Doesn't make a difference when it gets shut down.
@Johnny44 The PS5 in Japan just got it's third price hike that is bigger than the first two combined up to now ¥80k, which is a ridiculous price. That's why sales have dropped significantly in the last few weeks.
@WiltonRoots It only dropped 30% from it's first week, which is extremely good and probably the best hold any PS5 game had in the charts so far. It'll have very good legs and stay in the top 10 for at least one more week.
@Borderlineland "Trying to copyright and own an entire genre?"
What are you even on about? No one is doing anything like that here. This isn't even about copyright. And if it was they'd already have the copyright and wouldn't be trying to copyright something right now. And no, they did not patent the genre either. There are hundreds of monster catcher RPGs out there. Nintendo even published Yokai-Watch themselves outside Japan.
"However, we will do our utmost for our fans, and to ensure that indie game developers are not hindered or discouraged from pursuing their creative ideas."
This is the most disingenuous statement imaginable. As if they were ever even trying to be creative and as if other indie devs are being sued here too. Nintendo is one of the biggest supporters of indie devs in the industry.
@urbanman2004 Did you even read what I wrote? That Pocket Pair CEO is an actual scumbag. But I'm a shill because I dare to actually think for myself instead of behaving like a sheep.
@urbanman2004 And why is that? Why are you convinced that they are in the wrong here? Do you know which patents were infringed upon? Or are you just being reactive and hate Nintendo?
In case you didn't know: Pocket Pair is not the great "little guy" company that is being bullied by the evil corporation here. They are scammers who make early access games with false promises of update roadmaps, never finish them and then just abandon them for the next one. And they never have even the slightest bit of creativity in their games.
I want to quote @Itachi here:
"Some of the people portraying PocketPair as the underdog small indie studio taking the fight to AAA publishers is disingenuous at best, they're a company built off an admitted lack of creativity and a drive to chase trends while utilizing the scummiest practices in the industry to try and obtain success.
Supporting them isn't supporting small artists, quite the opposite actually given one of their other titles is all about the use of goddamn AI image generation."
@LadyCharlie Your comment makes zero sense. You're going on about how they shouldn't be allowed to patent genres but nobody ever even did. Like what are you even talking about? Nonsense.
@Snatcher It's a patent infringement lawsuit. We don't know what patents those are yet. The lawsuit has nothing to do with visual designs of the Pals or the catching mechanics.
@LadyCharlie They didn't patent monster collecting, obviously that's not what this is about. There are tons of games with such mechanics.
You should wait until you know what actual patents were infringed upon before making such statements.
@aznable There are 80 million Switches without Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. It sold 62.9 million as of this June while the Switch was at 143.42 million units.
If it was even remotely close to 1:1 the game wouldn't be selling much anymore and would have by far outsold Wii Sports to become Nintendo's best selling game. It would've been an earth shatteringly massive success as it would also be the third best selling game ever and that at a much higher average sales price than GTA V and Minecraft, the only two games that would've been ahead of it in sales.
@JSC016 The 3rd? It's the 5th or 6th time. They already had that at least in 2019. Although only last year they started to also bundle it with a Switch OLED and didn't include NSO early on, then included 3 months up until last year and now 12 months.

There is some kind of typo. #9 and #10 are both Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate.

@PikminMarioKirby Indeed, Super Mario Party launched with 126k copies and Superstars with 163k copies. The biggest retail launches in the franchise were Mario Party 8 with 282k and DS with 242k. So with digital this one should be the biggest launch in the franchise.
Re: Japanese Charts: Ain't No Party Like A Mario Party
@HotGoomba Did the title get changed? Or am I missing something?
Re: Japanese Charts: Ain't No Party Like A Mario Party
All of the Playstation games that launched the previous week dropped 80-85% (pretty big drops) but still managed to stay in the top 10.
Re: UK Charts: Mario Party Jamboree Rolls A Winner In Its Debut Week
To give some perspective, Echoes of Wisdom had a bigger launch than Mario Party.

@somnambulance Metaphor is only above P3R on PS5 alone. With PS4 together it's behind P3R which sold a combined 116k at launch.

Re: Round Up: The Reviews Are In For Super Mario Party Jamboree
@Yosher Not just the summary but most of that review reads like the reviewer just tried to make everything about the game look bad.
Btw there's also a 10/10 review by The Enemy.
