Nintendo has a pattern of hosting a Direct or 'info drop' in the month of April, with the slot far enough away from the all-encompassing E3 to be a useful launching point for some interesting announcements. It'll also be the first Direct since the 3rd March hardware launch of Nintendo Switch, and as a result will give the company a chance to expand upon upcoming release details.
It could be an intriguing presentation. Nintendo has simply said that ARMS and Splatoon 2 will be addressed, but there's also a broader remit of upcoming Switch and 3DS games. Beyond the welcome details on two major retail titles for Switch, then, there's scope for the big N to answer some key questions and revisit some games that are due an update.
When is the Nintendo Direct?
North America: 3pm PDT / 4pm MDT / 5pm CDT / 6pm EDT - UK/Ire: 11pm BST - Europe: 12am CEST / 1am EEST - Asia/Oceania: 7am JST / 6am AWST / 8am AEST
As always, then, we're going to pick out five announcements and details we 'expect' to see, though in a couple of cases 'hope' may be a better term. Let's get to it.
Making the Case for ARMS as a Retail Title
Not much has been seen of ARMS. Sure, there were flashy videos introducing half a dozen characters and their moves, and Nintendo has been keen to promote the title as a motion-based eSports hit in the making, but the real detail has been held back so far. Within our own team opinions have been split, too, based upon brief demo time in January - this writer and one or two others are unconvinced, while a few others are believers at this early stage.
Ultimately, Nintendo needs to step up with its promotion of ARMS not just in terms of the concept, but with solid details. Supposedly due in 'Spring', which is this window, a firm release date seems like a given in today's broadcast. Beyond that we hope to see a clearer breakdown of any single-player offerings in the game, online modes and more besides. If Nintendo wants us to believe in waggle again, albeit relatively accurate waggle, it needs to give us the faith. ARMS is sure to get the big sell in this Direct.
A Pitch for What's New in Splatoon 2
Whether you agree with the sentiment or not, some have argued that Splatoon 2 'doesn't feel like a sequel'; Nintendo needs to counteract that perception. Visually the game is a relatively subtle evolution, but there's plenty of room for the sequel to freshen things up.
Online modes, for example, and how they work. One or two new match types would certainly be welcome to shake things up, and ideally Nintendo will also open up our choices when online - being able to pick between more stages and match types for each round would be a step in the right direction. Nintendo, to be fair, is doing interesting things for local matches - well suited to eSports events - and it may also take the opportunity to talk about the Nintendo Online Service and the lobby / voice chat app that'll likely be key to Splatoon 2's online functionality. We think the app is more likely to be a focus than the broader online service, however.
In addition it'd be nice to get a flavour of Splatoon 2's single player offering. The campaign in the original was pretty decent, and certainly fun, so ideally we'll get a look at the follow-up's equivalent.
A Showcase and Release Information on Key 3DS Titles
In Autumn / Fall last year Nintendo hosted a Direct focused on the 3DS, making the case for its relevance and appeal into 2017. There are still games to be covered - those definitely on the way include the Pikmin title and Ever Oasis, so new trailers and release dates for them wouldn't be surprising.
Beyond that there's room for more 3DS releases if there's a desire to push through on localisation of games that have performed relatively well in Japan. Examples like Monster Hunter Stories and Double Cross spring to mind, and there are undoubtedly more. Beyond that we'll likely see an extended segment on Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, the big release out in May.
Perhaps there's also room for news of new 3DS hardware bundles or models - we're interested to see whether there'll be a price drop coming soon to push the portable through another year, but perhaps that's a longshot for this Direct.
The Nintendo Switch Update 'Roadmap' and New Features
This is an area ideally suited to dedicated fans and unlikely to wait for E3 - Switch updates. We don't mean those focused on stability, of course, but rather fun touches that'll give the system more personality.
HOME Themes are an obvious area that Nintendo could explore promptly, with backgrounds and related ambient music for the system's biggest games to date. They've been popular on the 3DS and seem like an easy win on Switch.
Other small but welcome additions could be outlined for the near future - more customisation options for the layout on the front-facing UI, for example. Perhaps Nintendo could even outline improved data management for save and app storage; it may sound boring, but a two minute video addressing some of the complaints around the launch system's operating system could go down well. A big feature that would also be well received would be the addition of video sharing to the capture functionality, or at least an outline of the intention to deliver such a feature later in 2017.
Not all of these are likely to feature (HOME Themes are the most realistic), but it'd be nice to see areas like this tackled. If Nintendo's made any progress with third-party streaming apps (such as Netflix or YouTube) they'd also be well received.
A Welcome Surprise for Switch, Like the Virtual Console...
Let's remember one key point - the biggest announcements in Nintendo's locker are likely being saved for E3. That said there's room for a nice surprise, with options such as a remaster or re-release of a popular game or perhaps a first-party but high-profile eShop release. Any 'tier 2' game project announcements could be thrown in to give the Direct a big sign-off.
Alternatively the company could do a lot to excite its biggest fans by addressing the Virtual Console. A lot of veteran and committed fans are curious about the form it'll take on Nintendo Switch, and whether the GameCube will be included. We're not convinced it's an area that would make a big impact at E3, either, so a Direct reveal would arguably target the right audience.
Naturally any 'available to download after this presentation' announcements would cause a brief meltdown online...
Those are some of our thoughts on what we think could happen in the upcoming Nintendo Direct; let us know what you hope to see in the comments, and be sure to join us for the live broadcast, blog and chat at 3pm Pacific / 6pm Eastern / 11pm UK / midnight CET.

First party games and indies. That'll be about it. Oh and maybe Monster Hunter ?? Pikmin 4 is lurking somewhere after being pulled from Wii U. Thanks for that Nintendo, by the way.
Announce the virtual console already!!!!!!!!!!!
Mother 3!
Would love to see some Dragon Quest announcements. Japan has gotten a ton of 3DS exclusive DQ games. They'll probably stay there and it'll be just wishful thinking on my part, but it would be awesome if Nintendo would announce a "30th anniversary summer of Dragon Quest" event and give us one game per month.
In Japan they have:
Dragon Quest Monsters 3D (remake of GB game)
Dragon Quest Monsters 2 (remake of GBC games)
Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3 Professional
The third "Rocket Slime" game
Theatrhythm Dragon Quest
and the upcoming Dragon Quest XI
Would be awesome if we at least got some of them over here!
People need to keep their expectations in check. People are only setting themselves up for disappointment with all this rampant speculation.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE How was Pikmin 4 "pulled" from the Wii U? The game hasn't even been announced, it's just something Miyamoto said exists. From the sounds of it, the game's still not done, so why would they release it on the Wii U?
One thing I'd not noticed before - just looking at that picture from Arms the side of the "gloves" looks very much like the Wii U "U" logo.
It seems like a game that was built from the ground up for the Switch but that little detail just has me thinking maybe it was something that Nintendo was originally planned for the Wii U.
I'd love some info on the Virtual Console (assuming there even is one coming), but don't expect it. So far its absence has been my only disappointment with the Switch, which I really love. VC was/is one of the best parts of owning a 3DS – I've turned mine into a genuinely fantastic little retro machine.
Dq11 switch release date,
Voice chat app,
Arms release date,
Finish with a unannounced title....
I demand Virtual Console news and Super Mario Sunshine available for download at Midnight otherwise I say we all Riot
With the disappointing Bayonetta announcement yesterday I'm hoping for her Amiibo announcement as well as some updates to Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia.
I'd like to hear Yooka-Laylee's release date, and that Disney Afternoon Collection (WHY IS THIS ON EVERYTHING BUT A NINTENDO CONSOLE) and FFVII Remake is coming to Switch, though I highly doubt any if that.
Interested to see if the direct sells me on Arms a bit more. I was iffy on Splatoon before it came out then loved it when I tried that first testfire before it's release. Maybe this will be similar.
@Bucky you beat me to it.
Mother 3 Nintendo how long must we keep asking for it?
I needs me some Mario titles over here, I'm getting withdrawals Yes I have a problem. Soooooo ? lol
Longshot... hoping we get a Lady Layton release.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE man the way you comment about Nintendo and the wiiu/switch i would think you were an old boyfriend Nintendo dumped.
I'll be watching for the "other" stuff. 3DS titles, maybe Monster Hunter-- and if we're to get any news on FEWarriors before E3 now would be the time.
@NicolausCamp yes I have been saying this for a long time already a collection of DQ games for Switch and the Rocker Slime and Joker titles we never got but Japan did on 3DS but we get it on Switch. I want this from SE, the already announce stuff, FF7 Remake, KH series and Secret of Mana Collection.
I think info on VC releases seems reasonable.
I don't think we will get anything VC related. They will left all that for a direct specifically made for the new online system.
You guys complain too much. I'm still playing BOTW. 200 hours into it and I've just now finished the Divine Beasts. I'm currently exploring areas I've missed. Then I'll finish all side quests, I'll collect all korok seeds (or poo), and do a speed run. whew Maybe I'll buy another game a couple years from now.
BUT VIRUAL CONSOLE WOULD TICKLE MY GIBLETS
Honestly the Splatoon and Arms info is enough for me. I'm still working on zelda for crying out loud. I do wonder what UI updates are on the way though (because as much as I love the current interface we know they are coming).
As far as surprises go, It would be sweet if the Odin Sphere remake made its way to the Switch. It would be a great fit, & the PS4 version comes in at under 5GB which is perfect.
ARMS/Splatoon 2/MK8 and done.
I'm not expecting any unknown retail games, but I really hope there are some eShop releases tonight, especially SNES VC and the Technos coin-ops from Arcade Archives.
Arms looks like a generic fighter game to me so far, so I'd welcome more info to show what's so special to it. More Splatoon info would also be great to show off how it's different to the original.
I'm also hoping for more Ever Oasis information. Sometimes it feels like I'm the only one still waiting eagerly from this.
It's a long shot, but Monster Hunter XX or DQXI localisation would be brilliant.
VIRTUAL CONSOLE PLEASE:
GameCube
Wii
Wii U
Dreamcast
Genesis
Master system
Game gear
N64
SNES
NES
GBOY/GBA
DS
SATURN???
ATARI 2600?!?
TURBO 16/ PC ENGINE
COMMODORE 64
And most important not seen since the Wii which could bring us 1000s of true arcade titles: VIRTUAL CONSOLE ARCADE!!!!!
In my opinion this would be the perfect time to announce virtual console. If there is any surprises I doubt it will be any new
Switch game announcements. I think they will save all that for E3. As the writer said Virtual Console E3 reveal would not be the in the best interest for Nintendo.
For Switch, I hope for :
1. ARMS -> More new stages, more new equipments, more playable characters, especially handsome/muscular looking male fighters.
2. Animal Crossing Switch -> Please make it come true, Nintendo !
3. Completely new IP again -> Surprise me, Nintendo !
For 3DS, I hope for :
1. Miitopia-> Miitopia...!!!
In English version !
Make it happen, Nintendo !
I'm ready to buy it, play it, died by ROFL. XD
2. Ever Oasis -> Hopefully the games released on this year.
The rest, I hope there are some upcoming 3rd paty games either Switch or 3DS such as Cooking Mama Sweet Shop, Puyo Puyo Chronicles, etc during Nintendo Direct.
Ganbatte, Nintendo !
We'll definitely get more details on ARMS. Fighters, stages, modes and a release date. I'm predicting... Friday 26th May. Side note, I'm not sure how long it's been up but if you go on the Nintendo Store, they've listed something called a "Fan Pack" which gets you the game and a Boxing Glove Stress Ball.
For Splatoon 2, I think they'll use it as the chance to focus on the app and voice chat. I don't think they'll announce a release date here. I think they'll save that for E3 where they'll show a new trailer and reveal it for Friday 14th July.
I think we'll definitely also see Pikmin 3DS, but I also think we'll see and get a release date for Rayman Legends: Definitive Edition. Outside of that, I doubt much else. I'm not sure we'll get Virtual Console yet, or apps like Netflix, as much as I want them. DO we even know how long it is yet?
@ThePoochyKid wow, talk about revisionism. Pikmin 4 was "actually very close to completion" as of summer 2015. It's quite obvious to anyone that it was probably originally schedueled as a Wii U release but then bumped back to Switch when Nintendo decided to stop supporting Wii U in late 2015.
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2015/09/pikmin_4_is_very_close_to_completion_though_its_platform_is_unclear
They need to get the new Virtual Console going. With the NES classic being such a success among people who usually don't buy Nintendo products, having classic Mario's and the like on the Switch for the launch would have been a good way to convince people to jump on board. Should have been available at launch!
Splatoon 2 needs a four player split screen otherwise they are wasting their time.
Nintendo also need to announce some new games to keep hype levels up.
I'd be happy with vc info.I'm not getting my hopes up,most likely e3 for that.
Just surprise us.
Do it.
A DragonQuest release date would be nice. 1 new game announcement. Online services, VC details and of course the Splatoon and Arms title.
A release date for Arms just before e3 and a release date for Splatoon 2 around Mid-July would be my guess.
I'd love an update on the Switch UI as well, just a few incremental improvements to the experience would go down well methinks.
I think anything VC or new games will be held back for e3 now.
@Mogster I'm just taken the words from the man himself. https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2016/07/shigeru_miyamoto_provides_assurances_on_pikmin_4_development
I'm confident there will be a surprise or 2,April Directs in the past have had surprises and global Directs, like this one is always has at least 1.
didn't really care for any of the Nintendo Themes..would rather have my own background imported for a theme tbh.
but hoping the direct is filled with good variety of topics other than arms and spla2.
It's going to be advertising for those two upcoming games. That's it. Nintendo is saving the important stuff for E3 this year. Do not expect much from this Direct.
Addition of Wario to the avatar pictures please.
His omission is a tragedy. If you're me.
Lucky you.
Everyone is entitled to express his/ her own opinions but this SLIGEACH_EIRE guy is constantly moaning everyday on every article! Take a break man. Be a little positive for once. Please!
I believe E3 2017 will be about:
1. Pokemon Stars ???
2. Story of Seasons Switch
3. Super Mario Odyssey latest trailer, gameplay footages, etc
4. Xenoblade Chronicles 2
5. Monster Hunter Switch
The rest are still mystery...
They will disclose full details on all of the upcoming Zelda DLC....
I'm fine with what they have mentioned.
@Cosats
Don't mind him/her.
He/She loves his/her Wii U too much more than any Nintendo video games.
I think it will be exactly what they said in the announcement - ARMS and Splatoon 2. Probably also a new amiibo range for one or both of those games.
"Naturally any 'available to download after this presentation' announcements would cause a brief meltdown online..."
GIVE ME SOME OF THAT GOODNESS, NINTENDO!
As I'm already getting most of what I want on Switch this year, all I can really say is that I hope Bayonetta 3 for Switch will be a thing. Maybe a Phantasy Star Online iteration too. Those. Would. Destroy. Me.
@StuTwo
I think that's a bit of a stretch. 😉
All of my thoughts were similar to these, but let's face it, what we are going to see is ARMS and Splatoon 2...and that's pretty much it.
I plan to pass on Splatoon because I won't pay for a super crap-ified version of PSN/Live with Nintendo. Arms also looks like a shallow gimmick-fest, so I really need to see much more to be convinced of that game being worth $60. I'm concerned that 1.2.Switch shows that Nintendo is ignorant about price expectations vs value of software.
I want GBA games on VC - thats it. Even if N64 or GC doesn't come right now, I want GBA
@SLIGEACH_EIRE They announced Pikmin 4 for the Wii U?
(no they didn't)
@Skunkfish yeah they did.
I can see Arms being announced with a launch date...other than that, a few indie game surprises and the announcement on when (the date) and what will come to the virtual console e-shop. Other than that, Splatoon 2 will probably be E3 with more info on that, and they'll wait until E3 to announce any more games. Did Elder's Scrolls even release on the Switch yet? That seemed to go hush after the video showcasing it, and it doesn't seem like nintendo is really pushing with showcasing 3rd party company games, which is not good in the long run, as that is what they should be working on...maybe do the Microsoft and Sony thing in the beginning of their consoles to help get third parties on board, while only releasing a few first-party titles...then, the following year, games galore.
The only thing I'm wondering, is if they are going to actually announce some good things coming to the 3DS, which is slowly being forgotten and pushed away. Something tells me that the beginning of next year, we'll see the 3DS be pushed away. The E-Shop on the 3DS hasn't even been getting much on it recently, and the fact that the virtual console (which there is by far a bunch of original Gameboy titles that could be released and a lot more Super NES titles) has barely gotten anything recently, makes my concerns more...but what about the Pikmin game that they said was coming to the 3DS...was that canned or just moving over to the Switch instead???
@Skunkfish They didn't say "Pikmin 4 for Wii U" but I'm willing to bet that it was being developed for Wii U only to be moved over to Switch. But last I heard about the game - nearly 2 years ago - they said it was "nearing completion". Hmm well what the hell happened with it? How was it "nearing completion" in 2015 but in 2017 we still know nothing about it?
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014-07-20-pikmin-4-in-development-and-very-close-to-completion
@617Sqn They said it was in the works, but didn't say it would be for the Wii U, though...the only Pikmin game that I saw that they said they were working on, was the one for the 3DS. I could be wrong though. Do you have the website that showcased that, or was it on here.
Can't wait to see what the direct will bring but think we may get to see an character outside of Chrom for FE warriors as they could easily just do what they did with smash until the game is released and show a new character or two every month or so.
Still hope we get to see some 3rd party news as it does not have to be new games but some ports or announcing games that will be out on xbox1 and ps4 in the next few months will get released for the switch as well.
Also does anyone know how long the direct will be?
@ThePoochyKid Miyamoto said it was "very close to completion" over 18 months ago. Well where is it?
http://ie.ign.com/articles/2015/09/07/pikmin-4-very-close-to-completion-says-miyamoto
The link you provided is after they decided to can the Wii U version. Get your facts straight if you want to try and take me on. I'm only sorry I didn't get to respond to your lie sooner.
Well we know they will be talking about ARMS and Splatoon 2, they said so in every tweet, so not much fun speculating about those 2 games.
ARMS will likely get a real release date, probably either late May or during or right after E3 so they can set up a bunch of kiosks to let people play it at E3. Spaltoon 2 will probably still be listed as "summer" but an actual date would be nice.
I think they'll spend time explaining the paid online. We know it will be fairly cheap, but I don't think they've said how we'll pay for it, not sure about Xbox Live Gold but Sony offers monthly, 3 months, or 1 year for PS+. Knowing Nitneod they'll announce 1, 3 or 12 month options but they'll forget to give a discount, so it will either be $5, $15, or $60.
MK8D will get discussed as part of the voice chat app, that will probably be the game they use as an example to show how it works.
I don't really follow the 3DS but Pikmin 4 is a gimme. (You can all argue as long as you want about Pikmin 4 being on Wii U or Switch, but until we see ANOTHER Pikmin 4 game, Pikmin 3DS is Pikmin 4 for me.) And Ever Oasis. I'd really like to see MH Stories and it's awesome amiibo come west.
Not expecting any new game announcements. I'd be ok if the last thing they showed was a new Mario Odyssey trailer w/ "Holiday 2017" at the end. I think all of the new games, and likely a port of SSB4, will be saved for E3. I don't think they want to talk about another Wii U port w/ MK8D releasing now. But Switch needs SSB4 b/c we need our Cloud and Bayonetta amiibo.
Should be an entertaining ND regardless.
@Mogster You can't tell @ThePoochyKid that because what you said makes too much sense.
I suspect we'll get a release date for Shakedown Hawaii, since it's supposed to be out this month, and yet, lacks a release date. I expect next week.....?
Spla2oon getting a good local multiplayer mode (the first one's Battle Dojo felt very rushed)
Game Cube VC
Miitopia
Puyo Puyo Chronicles
Pikmin 3DS game
...that's all I'm hoping for.
I think it will be online pricing because, let's be honest, no one wants to hear financial details at E3 and this will let any perceived outrage or indignation die down before they show off software.
I want a VC adding to Switch asap, so many titles I would love to play at home and on the go!
I'm really surprised that there are such high expectations whenever Nintendo announces a Direct, especially in cases when they basically tell you exactly what to expect in it. I'm expecting release dates on ARMS and Splatoon 2, plus more information on gameplay modes/characters. I'm expecting perhaps a smattering of information on already announced games for the 3DS and Switch. Maybe some info on the first DLC content for BotW. I'm hopeful for a Virtual Console announcement, but I don't actually see it happening.
That's it. All the wishing for huge surprises like a Smash Bros or Pokemon announcement will be sorely disappointed because those are more likely to be E3 announcements in a couple months.
It's bothering that expectations get ramped up so much that when Nintendo will clearly not meet them are just setting themselves up to be angry/disappointed.
Me, I'll just be happy knowing a date for those two spotlighted games, and I'll keep my high expectations for E3, an actual reason to really speculate - because unlike the last couple of ones, Nintendo actually has a lot of stuff they could pull out with a brand new system on the market that would be awesome.
@HalBailman Spla2oon doesn't need 4p Split screen - it has 8 player + 2 camerapersons local multiplayer!
I'm expecting release dates for both games and maybe a few other pieces of info and some 3DS stuff. Nintendo is still probably going to save any major annoucnements for E3.
They should address the timeline for Switch shortages and when regions should expect increased supply, and also the Mini NES which people still wish to buy.
Pikmin 4 wouldn't be teased on a specific platform... then a 2D Pikmin is announced on 3DS...
I don't think that it was ever a Wii U title – and probably not a Switch one either.
@unoclay
I don't even believe that the NES classic exists.
@cfgk24 Maybe that's sufficient for you, it's not four me. I need four player split screen like the good old days with Goldeneye. Otherwise I'll pass.
@flapjackashley2
Preach. Especially for this one in particular, expectations need to remain in check right before E3.
netflix/amazon/youtube and tv control please so i can retire my wiiu
It amazes me that so many people are not sold on ARMS. I personally think it looks like a blast and a really solid fighting game.
However, what I really want to see is unannounced games and improvements to the Switch.
A nice third-party triple A title would make a nice announcement. I still think the Switch is going the way of the Wii U, with stuff like Arms and 1-2 Switch, that most gamers hate.
More Wii U games!
Oh, so it's really not until midnight for me. Well, that means I can concentrate on work.
Splatoon 2 gets some specs, no release date.
ARMS gets full treatment, turns out to be quite limited and small title, will fail horribly. Little Mac is teased as a character.
3DS will probably be Dragon Quest that was already announced by Square. Maybe Ever Oasis. That's about it.
Maybe Amiibos, but I wouldn't hold my breath.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe gets a peek for some odd reason, as if everyone wasn't already familiar with it.
And then as a surprise at the end, there will be. Nothing.
That should keep my expectations in check.
Apparently a Switch Neon Mario Kart 8 Deluxe bundle. .....
@Anti-Matter
Fire Emblem Warriors
Expectation low. E3 is where the big reveals are at.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Oh snaps, that was back in 2015? Sorry about that, I must of misremembered. I thought that was from 2016.
But still, there's no evidence that it was ever Wii U game.
This article hit my expectations on the head. If there is a surprise it will be awesome. If there isn't it will be rubbish.
No middle ground 😊
I would love it if I could download Luigi'so Mansion of Mario Sunshine on my switch tonight!
I'm looking forward to some indie game release dates. I'm really hungering for more games on the Switch. I'm looking forward to getting Mr. Shifty tomorrow, but I'd like to see a Hollow Knight release date.
I hope, but don't expect, a new monster hunter. It would be perfect for the switch!!
An update on Animal Crossing Mobile, and how it will work in conjunction with Animal Crossing Switch.
And then tell me that they're both coming in October. Deal? Deal.
@flapjackashley2 this is true, but you never know we may get a surprise big announcement. I think E3 will be big but mostly focused on Mario Oddesey, since it's the biggest title coming out for Switch as of now besides BotW. Nintendo's main focus of this direct however should be to show off and give us details on Splatoon 2 and Arms
My guess...
1) Straight to ARMS. Release date and game modes. Maybe whatever story this game has.
2) Mention MK8 Deluxe, detail the bundle that's been rumored.
3) Splatoon 2. Game modes, maybe show another stage. Stress on new clothes or splat duelies as differentiators. Online tidbits but nothing major.
4) 3DS showcase. Maybe Pikmin, definitely Ever Oasis with release date and Fire Emblem.
5) Explanation as to virtual console with rough release window. Will mention Gamecube games IF it's actually happening.
6) New Switch game, may be a Wii U port. Star Fox Zero or Bayonetta I hope.
Main assumption is a new game announcement would not be something that could eclipse whatever they wanted to communicate about ARMS.
The small surprises I'd like please are Metroid Prime 4 and Wave Race Switch. Releasing tomorrow, buy one get one free. Thanks!
The REAL resaon that the Switch did not have a VC at launch is because it would have cannabilized NES mini sales!
VC games will NOT be shown before E3.
The reason as to why is because of the new JoyCons designed to emulate the look and feel of the VC systems.
SATURN???
The only way any modern console could play Saturn games is if an actual Saturn console was physically attached to it.
I'm not expecting brand new titles with E3 around the corner.
My top 3 wishes for this direct:
1) Monster Hunter XX coming to West (release date)
2) Virtual Console for Switch out today or tomorrow
3) more demos for upcoming games on Switch
@HalBailman er - Goldeneye online play sucked. . . .
@SirQuincealot A Lady Layton release would be amazing!!! Yes please
Etrian Odyssey titles, Pikmin 3DS, Fire Emblem, and Ever Oasis. That's really all I'm looking/hoping for.
I hope virtual console will be revealed. Nice surprises would be the game Retro Studios has been working on and any other unknown games in the works. Maybe a new Kid Icarus title.
I hope we get info about the VC and the paid online. Nintendo has been too quiet about this and it's a big point for the Switch.
"Bit Trip Runner 3 is available to download at the end of the presentation" would be cool, if it only took 24 hours to get it running on the console.
A boy can day dream.
I honestly do not believe Nintendo will detail the VC until after E3, in the September/early October Nintendo Direct. I think it's clear that they won't be launching the service until the paid online service starts in the fall, and Nintendo prefers short turnarounds from announcement to launch, so they'll wait until then.
I also believe they'll drop the "Virtual Console" branding.
It was mentioned earlier but I think something about the Voice Chat App needs to be addressed due to multiplayer games are coming really soon. MK8 and Arms are games that are going to be very popular and voice chat is a necessity to complete the experience.
@IceClimbers
September/ October for VC reveal? Too long of a wait.
@Anti-Matter I too would love account switch ☺
@Hokanchu deal!!! ☺
Miitopia plz. Or at least another Tomodachi title. Then I can breathe again. Even something like 'Switch Sports', idk. I'm clenching copies of Wii Sports Resort, Wii Fit and Wii Music right now - its just one franchise I'm not ready to say goodbye to.
Meanwhile, while everyone is wondering about Detective Pikachu, I can't see it happening. At all. I mean, the game only features pokémon up to gen 6, so it seems very late for it to come out outside Japan now.
I'd like them to announce some blizz games like diablo, hearthstone or maybe even overwatch. I've been playing the darkest dungeon lately again so I'd like to see it go portable
I'd like them to do some confirmation cleanup on those few 3DS titles we know will get localized, like Etrian V. But that's not Nintendo exactly, so probably won't happen.
I'm expecting at least one "available now" thing, but have no idea what it'll be. ARMS demo? Something better than that? Who can say.
@SirQuincealot I second this desire.
And maybe some localizations for both the Switch and 3DS and Wii U rerelease announcements.
The direct will be interesting, though I doubt there will be too many huge, exciting reveals. E3 is much more intriguing to me. I have this feeling that Nintendo is planning a pretty big E3 to sustain the success of Switch so far, and that will leave them with little to talk about today. They don't really need big reveals today, since you still can't buy a switch at retailers in my area of the U.S.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
You are wrong, you are also rude. I am embarrassed that a fellow Irish man writes so much nonsense on this site so regularly. You are verging on being a troll.
For all you know, the Pikmin 4 Miyamoto spoke of is the forthcoming 3DS entry.
You know nothing. So stop being rude.
If you can't afford a Switch, go and do something more productive than writing nonsense on this site.
Besides being hopeful of a virtual console announcement, they need to set aside 90 seconds for an updated indie trailer?? There's been quite a few announced Switch games since January!
No need in me buying a Switch until Mario Odyssey is released....or they get a Virtual Console on there.
This will be the first Direct I won't be watching live because I just don't care for Arms or Splatnoob 2
No expectations = no disappointment, so that's how I'm rolling.
@Andrew_R_2000 That's a good way to roll. I do have one minor expectation, however, for content beyond Splatoon and Arms. NIS America tweeted about the Direct, so I imagine Disgaea 5 will get a mention. But yeah, I don't expect anything new, so whatever we get will be fine.
@cfgk24 Who says I want to play online? Typical with self absorbed society these days, everyone is concerned only about their own requirements. Here's an idea: do both! Online and four player split screen. It's not rocket science! If you don't need it, don't use it. Wise up.
