At the close of its 25th Anniversary Sonic Party in San Diego, SEGA unveiled a cinematic for the next main-series release for the franchise - codenamed Project Sonic 2017, it's due in the Holiday season next year and is confirmed for the Nintendo NX.
It's a Sonic Team project, cited as the same team that produced Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations. Described as "not a sequel, a brand new experience", the short cinematic trailer has the tagline "join the resistance" and shows 'classic' Sonic arriving to help the modern Sonic.
No further details were given, but it's great news to see formal confirmation that it'll come to Nintendo's NX hardware. Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think.

Awesome! But that means there's no Mania, right? Else they would have said...
I'm not gonna lie, this looks properly good.
So a full-budget Sonic game is being released on the NX, but a small $15 2D game isn't? Wut?
Also, what is with the dark tone? It's not a bad thing, but it reminds me of Sonic '06. At least this looks cool.
HYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
@Mega_Yarn_Poochy was comming to basically post the same thing...
we get this but not a 2D game? why can't we get both?
SO EXCITED!!!! Day one buy for me already. Modern Sonic = I'll love it!
@Mega_Yarn_Poochy The dark tone and "resistance" thing reminds me of the archie sonic comics...which are dope.
Honestly the cgi trailer looks good but I'm not getting sucked into the sonic cycle again
LOL at the comments on the other article... everyone with their crystal balls!
Since a lot of people are gonna be asking why this is on NX but Mania isn't, my guess is that SEGA & Sonic Team were able to secure NX development kits, but the various (and much smaller) studios involved in Sonic Mania were not.
It's unlikely that the licensing agreements for dev kits supplied to SEGA and Sonic Team would extend so far as to allow them to be passed on to Christian Whitehead / Headcannon / PagodaWest Games. I wouldn't be too surprised to see Mania ported to NX further down the line when dev kits become more ubiquitous.
As for Sonic '17, I'm digging it! Only a pre-rendered trailer to go on, but the suggestion of a continuation of the Colors / Generation gameplay line, with Modern & Classic Sonic back in tow. Big tick in my books.
@Raylax That seems logical in terms of Mania / NX, certainly
There's now twice as many 3rd party games announced for NX as there are 1st party games.
Kinda impressed that Sega at least tried to go all out today. And even though the stream was being mocked, I really felt for the company for the first time in awhile (they're still my fave pre 2002). And the game looks promising. Sega is officially on board the NX train.
Meh I want mania. Not to sure about this one.
@ThomasBW84 If it's the case it does highlight a wider problem that we're less than a year from release and NX dev kits are still completely out of the reach of non-massive developers, even when they're tied to massive publishers. I hope Nintendo reveals the thing and gets those dev kits out soon so we can see Mania (and a whole load of other smaller studios' titles) heading for NX
Looks like it'll continue the Generations style gameplay but with a serious tone more in line with Sonic 06. Hope it's good.
Looking forward to both Mania and Project Sonic 2017. Loving the tone and setting for the NX title.
@YouSeemFRAZZLED I'd say this and Dragon Quest XI both being confirmed for NX more or less cements the rumour that the NX will be at least in the same ballpark as PS4 and XBO.
@Raylax I was just going to comment similarly and suggest that Sega Japan/Team Sonic has more information to go off of *for the time being than Sega's western affiliates.
Sonic Generations 2, in other words. As expected.
Can't go wrong if you don't fix what ain't broken, I'll say!
@Raylax I'm glad someone else made that conclusion. Personally, I feel pretty happy about all we're getting!
And as a continuation of Colors and Generations, it does sort of look like Modern Sonic boosted a bit, which he wasn't able to do in Lost World. I hope that returns.
Also, not a hexagonal platform or angry Zeti in sight. Thank goodness.
@Raylax @ThomasBW84 Another theory that can explain the lack of NX in mania is because Project Sonic 2017 didn't have gameplay. Maybe because Nintendo wants to keep the hardware's aspects secret, which would explain the lack of the console during E3 despite of having 2017 announcements.
Also considering some companies and indie developers send their games to be ported to publishers, if it was a licensing thing SEGA could just asked Sonic Team to port the NX version.
@AlexSora89 while it does feature the return of Classic Sonic, and I presume both Blue Blurs will be playable, this was very specifically said to not be a sequel. So it is not Generations 2, Adventure 3, etc. But that makes the premise all the more confusing.
After seeing SEGA unnecessarily reinvent Sonic gameplay from the ground up after every game or two, it's very encouraging to see them revealing two new games which both appear to re-use tried and tested gameplay styles from well-received past games. Maybe they've finally figured out that flinging the baby out with the bathwater every time is not a good long-term strategy.
@Raylax Was Dragon Quest XI actually confirmed for NX? The reporting on that event was all over the place.
If so, that means there's 3 times as many 3rd party games announced for NX as there are 1st party games.
I don't know what to say... it looks VERY promising after all this Boom junk. The fact it'll come to NX has me super excited!
The Resistance tagline already has me thinking up ideas about the story. Something like a time traveling, Sonic CD-type setup with the Classic and Modern eras; perhaps Eggman has taken over the eras? Oh the possibilities!
@IceClimbers As I understand it, they confirmed during a press conference that they were releasing it for NX, but at the time companies were not supposed to be revealing whether titles were coming to NX or not, so they did some hasty backpedalling and changed it to an "uh.. well.. maybe.. oops." I still take it as fairly solid confirmation that DQXI is NX-bound, Square-Enix just let it slip out too early.
from the team that brought the only good sonic games this past 10 years...well im glad they clarified that
@Xjay
In all fairness though, usually the Sonic Team releases have been decent to pretty good.
It's just that they haven't released a Sonic game in some time. We were due a new one.
The trailer looks fine, but the concept of "two different Sonics" is still pretty stupid. It basically indicates that Sega is acknowledging that they failed with "Modern Sonic", so instead of reinventing Sonic again or just reverting the franchise to "Classic Sonic" only, they forcefully pair the "old" character with the "current" one that very few seem to like. Please just let one live and the other die, or at least don't include them both in the same game. Perhaps this greivance has been stated thousands of times already since Sonic Generations' debut, but it's still relevant given Sega's never-ending recycled reinventions of the Sonic series for the past 15 years.
Gameplay please.
@JaxonH True if that's the case, wake me when SA3 (Sonic adventure 3) and SA4 (Sonic advance 4) happen
If it's a sequel to Generations then I'm in, if it's like Sonic 2006 then I'm done with Sonic. Don't fail us Sega.
so that's:
The Legends of Zelda: BotW
Just Dance 2016
and the New Sonic title.
NX looks pretty interesting so far,
(i still don't understand why the 2d isnt coming.)
but still pretty cool!
@Xjay SA 3 was Sonic 06
@Xjay
Will do.
Need to see gameplay, but if plays something like Generations then I can get into that. At the moment, I'm looking forward to Mania than this.
@Wendigo l:(
I'm glad this game is coming to a Nintendo console, but I wouldn't mind another Rush-style 3DS game; Generations 3D was pretty awesome, at least if you buy it on sale (Which the current price is pretty reasonable.)
DLC this time please
I must be honest, even if I'm the only one here feeling it, but I'm not overly hyped for this new Sonic title. I'm looking forward to it, sure, and that fact that it'll be coming to NX as well as Xbox One and PS4 is promising, but the concept just isn't hitting me. It's Classic Sonic, really. If they showed another character... Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, even Silver, I would've gotten pretty excited. But the value of having Classic Sonic return feels a lot less exciting after having brought him back for Sonic Generations and with Sonic Mania on the horizon. I know it's an assumption, but my gut feeling is that they brought him back solely as a gimmick, really. If you're not going to treat this as a sequel for Sonic Generations, why bring him back at all? It's not like it's necessary. Sonic Mania looks like it's going to be closer to what we recognize as "classic" better than Generations ever did (which is saying something, because I actually feel like they did a great job).
This is especially problematic for my personal tastes because I want them to expand and evolve the gameplay of our comtemporary hedgehog. I know it was a very brief showing, but to me it looks like Sonic will have a Lost World-inspired play style. I sincerely hope they have fine-tuned Sonic's mechanics, because I felt Lost World had some very serious flaws with how it played. Parkouring was unnecessarily awkward, a walk button felt alien, actually running was slow, and it just didn't feel fluid. I sincerely hope these problems are given the attention they need. I admit that it did seem that there were some mechanics of Sonic's modern hay day returning (Unleashed, Colors & Generations) like boosting (sort of?) and sliding, but it's still not entirely clear to me. It's just a teaser afterall. But hey, I don't see a single hexagonal platform or angry Zeti in sight, which is a good sign to me. I just hope this thing falls together well in a way that makes sense.
@Raylax what we need is e-shop confirmation, that will solidify an open door for indie devs just as the Wii U and 3DS did. It might take a second for them to come but if you have 50 or so games roll out on day one of a system most of them will be passed over for the triple A titles. A nice stream of digital releases will prolong its life between big releases in case this one too goes the way of the Wii U
@the101 My thoughts exactly. I'm skeptical on this game since they showed no gameplay footage, just CGI. Even maybe 10 seconds of gameplay would have made this more hype.
That they made a point of saying it's made by the Colours and Generations team and that classic Sonic is in it, I would guess it will be like those games. Which isn't a bad thing. But the setting worries me. I'm seeing houses and bridges and real world stuff that shouldn't be in a Sonic game. It should be abstract, fantasy stuff.
@SigourneyBeaver It actually may be a premise where Dr. Eggman finally wins. It may seem pretty over-the-top at first glance, but it's not like those were giant monsters or demons destroying the city. They looked like Eggman's giant mechs. They even had triangular yellow plates under their heads like the EggRobo enemy from Sonic & Knuckles. That's a pretty cartoonish design. Maybe Classic Sonic's involvement comes from an attempt to go back and prevent whatever happened that allowed Eggman to win, an event that was too big for just one Sonic to handle, but this is something we'll have to wait for to understand.
I'm still primarily concerned with how the game will play. Sure, one can be hopeful that they say "from the makers of Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations", but keep in mind those were the two most recent Sonic Team-developed titles that got universally positive scores. Sonic Lost World and Sonic Unleashed were mixed. It's like how the DVD release of The Princess and the Frog says "from the stuido that brought you Aladdin and The Lion King", not "Home on the Range and Chicken Little".
@Raylax I wasn't aware Dragon Quest XI had been confirmed for NX. If so then that's awesome to hear.
Hoping for a open world like hub area, like sonic adventure and sonic 06
@SigourneyBeaver Technically the world of Sonic is a mix of fantasy and real life. It did not started like that, but it's been canon since the first Adventure at least.
And I doubt Sega will ever change it, the actual Sonic world is a mixture of Fantasy, Sci-Fi and real life, it literally include a bit of everything, it's way too comfy and creative-free as a setting for make them willing to change it XD
So Generations 2 then. I'm impressed
I know it's not a sequel but without seeing the gameplay it looks like Sonic Generations 2 so far. At least its got modern Sonic in it. I prefer modern Sonic over his classic design any day. I still like the Sonic Boom designs the best though.
@SigourneyBeaver I totally agree. Real world settings just don't seem right for Sonic. At least the Boom games are set in a fantasy world.
Cautiously optimistic
Top 5 Comfirmed NX games! (So Far.):
#5: ???
#4: ???
#3: Just Dance 2017
#2: Project Sonic 2017
#1: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Bah. I am usually optimistic but...So far Sonic and Just Dance third party announced for NX? Really? Is that it? Don't say 'Ooo we will get BF, CoD, GTA, Fifa but they can't announce them until Nintendo announces NX.' My main worry is now, even if Nintendo do have the most powerful console in the history of consoles, it will be blighted with Adventure Time, Ben 10, Disney teenage simulator, Lego and crazily no Pokémon. Fans crying out for mature games...Nintendo mis-translated as manure?
Please be a launch title please be a launch title please be a launch title please be a launch title please be a launch title pl...
And suddenly the stream wasn't such a waste of time after all...
Properly hyped for this. I loved the first Generations and I'm guessing this one's going to be it's sequel. Can't wait.
Next Holiday tho....
"Holiday release" oh boy...
Guess I need to find time to tenderly play my copy of Generations on PS3. Sonic Generations that is. I've been playing over 40 hours of another Generations here recently... Lol
NX delayed to holiday 2017 confirmed!
Anyway, those who say this confirms NX is on par with XB1 and PS4 are wrong. Generations came to PS3, 360, PC and 3DS for example.
Some good news at long last. I missed this bit of news, stayed up until 4.30AM watching the most embarrassing, poorly produced presentation I've ever seen. From being an hour late, to those cringy DJ's, to dancing Sonic, to awful sound quality, to the "buzzzzz", to the heckled presenter.
I think we'll get the Sonic Mania game eventually. It's been explained why it hasn't been announced yet.
@ThomasBW84 Thanks for the stream and comment blog last night. What was initial frustration turned into hilarity. How're your ears?
That presentation will be the memes of legend for years to come.
I wish it would look more, like, cartoon-y? That's what I liked about Lost World. When I was playing Generations I thought the environments look really pretty. The thing is though that you're playing as a blue hedgehog, who is running at high speed, yet they seem to want to make his games all "mature". Lost World at least puts a cartoon hedgehog into a cartoon environment.
That trailer looks cool, but we won't know if it'll be any good until we see more gameplay.
Ow, the (h)edge!
...hog.
I'm sure CWC will be happy though.
Idk if Sonic honestly suits a darker more epic tone. There's still hope for this though.
Love how it opens with "From the people who brought you the only two good Sonic games of the last ten years..."
@Grumblevolcano Whilst I won't say it confirms it, it does make it highly likely. The difference there is the power and respective cost of development for each console. Developing for consoles with comparable spec to the PS2-era consoles (3DS, Wii) is pretty cheap by today's terms, so producing a second version of a game for that kind of system doesn't require a big budget and you're likely to see your money back from it.
It was the HD era when development costs really began to spike upwards. Producing a second version of a game targeted at consoles of that spec is much more cost-prohibitive, and you're much less likely to see a return. It's unlikely that SEGA would be producing a tailored version of the game specifically for the NX (if the NX matches Wii U in terms of power), and even less likely that Square Enix would be producing three versions of Dragon Quest XI (PS4/XBO, 3DS, and NX). The cost of doing so is too high and the likelihood of ever seeing a return of that is too low. It's much more likely that the NX is comparable to the PS4/XBO.
@Raylax Maybe both Square and SEGA were impressed by the NX's gimmick though. Of which we go back to Ubisoft's comments about bringing back the casuals, if it is that kind of system then both SEGA and Square would support it with Sonic 2017 and DQXI because of how huge the Wii was.
@Emperor-Palpsy so you want the nx to be delayed then? Strange
Looks pretty decent. Hopefully it's amazing.
Pretty much every 3D sonic game has been bad. I'm going to look to history to help me save money.
@Grumblevolcano Yeah, but the 3DS version wasn't initally annouced alongside with the other versions. It was announced much later. Plus, the 3DS version was wayyy different than the console versions.
EDIT: For proof, see the very first trailer of the game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lC_m0kUM5LY
Man, that was hype. This has the potential to be really good, especially if it is basically Generations 2 gameplay-wise.
I have high hopes. The fact that it is going to be on NX is amazing, too.
(That moment when Sonic has a game announced on Nintendo's new system before Mario.)
Here we go again .... Don't believe the hype .....can sega mess up sonic again just let sonic rest in peace and remember the good days of sonic 1,2,3 cd .
Thank god this is coming to NX. Looks interesting, so far.
I'm just glad to see sonic on a path to redemption.
@Gauchorino i agree with you. They could just apply the classic style to modern sonic. I was hoping for a continuation of the storyline. I really liked the Story in sonic adventure 1 and 2. I liked sonic heroes and shadow hedgehog also for the story. And they left sonic chronicles storyline in the open. There is so much to do for Sonic team with sonic they really dont know that the main series is a gold mine. The overall Storyline of the main series is great for a platformer. It gives it a bit more depth and thats something that mario games kinda lacks with there characters
Big eggbot
Old sonic back
This looks good
This better be worth it after that awful presentation.
YES!YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Even though I have a PC to play this on, something still feels off about this game not coming to Wii U.
I mean, the Hedgehog Engine runs great on the system, as we've seen with Lost World and the Olympic Titles, and this seems like the perfect game to cater to the Nintendo crowd. Maybe this game is running on a new engine that can't support Wii U?
At least we still have Rio 2016.
@Raylax Your theory on the availability of the dev kits sounds reasonable to me!
@The_Ninja PC wasn't on any of the Generations trailers though and it did come to PC only 2 days later than 360 and PS3. About the 3DS version being very different from the home console versions, I do imagine the game being different on NX to satisfy the console's gimmicks and/or (lack of) power.
I'd rather see gameplay but I guess is going to be like Generations...
At least is coming to NX.
Maybe this will be the game that fixes the series. But on the other note Nintendo needs to get more dev kits out because anyone want to see no man's sky on nx
Nice.
But no mention of Lost World lmao
@TF-Warrior Check out my forum thread for more details!
Aww, it looks really amazing! Maybe it will be the best game! .
The trailer didn't do much to excite me, and with the appearance of classic Sonic suggesting a more generations-esque game, I'm unlikely to get excited from future trailers. I'm in a weird minority of people who liked Unleashed and Colours, but was a not a fan of Generations.
Still, I shall keep an eye out on future information just in case it manages to surprise me.
@the101
I was about to answer your comment, but you said it yourself - it's a "stealth sequel" (to quote Tv Tropes' lingo) for Sonic Generations.
It's Sonic Generations 2 in all but name.
Which, to me, is pretty much perfect.
"By the team who made Sonic Colors"
Sonic Colors was awesome and wasn't a crash-fest (unlike Lost world), so that sounds positive!
But I thought they wanted Sonic to be light-hearted nowadays. The video suggests they go back to a darker game with more drama. I hope it turns out to be good, but we have to wait and see.
Oh, and am I the only one who thinks this could be a tie-in to the upcoming movie? Same story and all?
Meh. I thought we were past the post-apocalyptic settings?
The NX logo, right there, a real thing gave me chills!
I think it's funny they clarified that this is from the team that brought us Colors and Generations, because those are probably the only two above average Sonic games in the last decade.
The trailer didn't get me hyped to be honest. I kind of like the dark theme with the giant Eggman robots but when the old Sonic returned it felt a bit forced. It was fun to have both Sonics in generations but it shouldn't be a returning feature in the franchise if you ask me. It feels a bit weird to see the new and old Sonic together.
If it's anything like Colors (Gameplay wise) I am definitely looking forward to it.
I'll join the resistance!
If they give this game Amiibo support along with the NX, then I'll buy the Nintendo NX and this game in a heartbeat.
Scratches chin in intrigue Well, now! I'm pretty curious about these two Sonic games. I'll keep my optimism in check, but I'm "in" for more deets.
Ummm.. did I see a different trailer than half of you, because all I saw was a cinematic trailer with no actual gameplay footage? So how come everyone is super excited when literally know nothing other than a game is being made lol.
@zeldazero This is one of the main reasons why I'm way more excited for Mania, there was actual gameplay footage in it.
@zeldazero I agree.
I'm surprised that Sega is still making Sonic games. They were never good games. The brand only being carried along by Sega fanboys throughout the generations. Maybe they're brainwashing their children to like the games now too?
Whatever. If they enjoy it, I really don't care. I won't be getting it.
@Grumblevolcano Well, probably 1 piece of the NX platform will release during holiday 2017, but will it be the home, handheld or tablet part? How many 3DS games are announced for 2017? I think that system has reached its end of life as well.
@Yorumi It does seem kind of silly, doesn't it? And I don't even need to see the NX, I just want to know what the bloody thing is - home, handheld, tablet, some combination there of? They keep saying "platform", so it probably is more than one thing. My latest thought is some type of modularity, like a tablet w/ a TV dock and handheld dock or just play it as a tablet. Or a dingle that plugs into a home or handheld. Something wierd. So I don't need to see it, I just want to be told what it is.
@rjejr Only 2+ months left until reveal
TGS is probably the absolute earliest the NX will be announced and given Color Splash's existence I think later is realistic. Maybe late October or early November to dodge the PSVR/PS4 Neo hype wave?
Trailer looks awesome (tch duh its SONIC) but with no gameplay footage, its a wait and see.
But I guess Nintendo's exclusivity deal ended because its multiplatform; may get this on PS4 if I don't buy NX just yet.
Alright, let's hope it's good. However, while it's nice to see a new NX game, it just doesn't compare to the glory that is Just Dance!
@Handsomistic15 Nintendo's exclusivity deal was shown to have ended as soon as Lost World was put on PC. All they have now is Olympics and Boom.
@KingofSaiyanZ Of course it is, salt levels rise significantly on this site when [insert third party game] doesn't come to Nintendo consoles.
I'm sure they'll have a bigger reveal after the system is revealed. Sonic is a hit or a miss with each new game. This one looks like it could be good, but we didn't see any gameplay or anything yet
@ThomasBW84 Just a heads up, The Lego Dimensions Sonic has official images and a trailer.
http://www.thebrickfan.com/lego-dimensions-sonic-the-hedgehog-level-pack-71244-revealed/
@Grumblevolcano Man, while my practical head says they will wait until after PM:CS to unveil the NX, that would also mean waiting until after Pokemon S&M in late November if NX is also a handheld. , and that' sjust toolate.
I also really don't think they can do it at a show, I think they need their own thing as no matter how simplistic of a device NX may be, they'll still need to explain it properly after the Wii U debacle of "Is it a new console or is it an add-on for the Wii?" So I'm expecting another Space World or the like.
I'll also don't think Nitneod cares about what MS or Sony are dong, Nintendo has enough to worry about w/ their own problems w/o worrying about somebody else's business. I do think Sony is waiting to unveil the PS4K Neo until after NX so it can steal it's thunder, but Sony can afford to wait, PS4 is doing fine. Though Sony won't wait forever, but I do think they are waiting as long as they can.
I'd like to see Ntinod do a 1 day event presentation a few days before TGS, that way they can show off the games there. I don't think they care so much about Gamescon in Germany. So early Sept.
Or as you said, 2 months. Though maybe more like 6 weeks.
This is a pretty heavy endorsement of the idea that NX is going to be a powerful console and not just a portable. It's also nice to see third party games get all the NX headlines before Nintendo games... all except Zelda BoW, of course.
@rjejr So can we narrow in? At least part of the NX platform includes a console on par with XB1/PS4? I mean I've expected it, but there was no real official assurance of that at all, and now as others have said above, it's increasingly unlikely that third-party devs would be going far out of their way for an underperforming console after what happened with Wii U.
@The8BitLego Thank you so much for that link. My family spent about 30 minutes at the beach yesterday standing waist deep in water discussing what Sonic would get in Lego D - team, level or fun pack, and what toys. They'll all be very happy it's a level pack, Sonic deserves it, though we all thought maybe a fun pack w/ Tails, maybe where Tails was a vehicle - if a Dalek can be a vehicle, anything can be a vehicle. 1 kid did guess car from Sonic's racing game, so I guess he got that right. Thanks again.
@KingofSaiyanZ Sonic Mania looks like a lazy Cash in imo
This looks good... but I said the same thing about Sonic 06 back when that was shown off, and look how that game turned out. I'll definitely keep my eye on this title and I hope for the best, but it's honestly too difficult to get excited for a Sonic title now. Considering it's being developed by the team behind Generations and Colors, I think the game should be fine.
But for the love of God, give us Chao!!!
@Emperor-Palpsy It can't be a launch title when:
@aaronsullivan "At least part of the NX platform includes a console on par with XB1/PS4?"
Well I've always thought that. OK, not always, last year I thought they would simply put out NX as a retro game machine, and everybody just laughed at me, but we did get that, only separate, so now NX can be something more.
I do still think it can be a cheap box though. X1 has been $280 since E3. X1 has a 500GB HDD and a blu ray disc drive player. Take out those 2, make it cartridge based and 64GB storage w/ a slot for more, that's a $199 or $249 box that looks like a toy.
So "on par" as far as game playing power, OK, but it won't look or seem "on par" w/o a HDD or blu ray drive.
And then there's the Vita. Vita is a really nice piece of kit, as the Brits like to say. New 3DS isn't too shabby. Don't you think it's possible to make a $199 handheld in 2016 that would play Sonic 2017? Or Zelda BotW? Old 3DS can play Hyrule Warriors and New 3DS XC, why can't NX Away play a limited scope Zelda or Sonic game?
Now I do think NX will have a Home component w/ power on par w/ the X1, maybe not PS4 so much but close enough like X1 is, but that power could still come from a handheld w/ TV out, or some Tesseract thing that docks into a TV stand or Circle PAd Pro controller. Or a tablet. So I agree w/ you about the power, just not sure about the use of the word "console", might be too limiting.
You know what made the minimal storyline in old Sonic games endearing to me? He was trying to save his animal friends from the clutches of a mad scientist who was using them to create robots. No world-domination business and certainly no "two Sonics" crap.
Eh, anyway, I hope this ends up good, but I'm not holding my breath.
@LUIGITORNADO
I'm not saying I won't get it, I'm just saying they really haven't shown us anything!! Maybe when we see actual gameplay footage it might look good then I may get it, but this trailer shows absolutely nothing and everyone is getting hyped for it!
@aaronsullivan Not necessarily, I think the "bring in the casuals" approach could also bring the same 3rd party support as we're seeing so far. Now if Square confirmed something like Rise of the Tomb Raider, Ubisoft confirmed stuff like Ghost Recon Wildlands and SEGA confirmed stuff like the latest Yakuza game then sure that would be a good indication of power.
What we know so far could happen even if NX had Wii power in terms of specs provided it had Wii power in terms of brings casuals to the platform.
@rjejr
The portable portion of the NX is quite mysterious. The way I look at it is this: devs accustomed to 3DS development are going to love making their games also available on the console, but console developers aren't going to be thrilled with downgrading to the portable. (This may be changing though as all the consoles seem to be looking for a more PC and mobile model of platforms including wildly varied amounts of power)
Nintendo will do the development for both gladly, though! It's win-win for the first party who sells both types of hardware.
@Grumblevolcano Maybe it's just because Sonic on Nintendo platforms is (weirdly?) a very comfortable place for SEGA, but to me it would feel like spreading too thin to make it viable on underpowered systems for a mission critical game like this.
Put another way: It's trying to be a big return for Sonic. It needs to be focused and executed perfectly. Doesn't seem to be room to take the extra time and energy to make the game nicely scalable.
I guess that's why the NX confirmation on this game speaks to me a bit more on the issue. No doubt the games you mention would say much more!
@aaronsullivan But Unleashed's aim was identical, Sonic was in a complete mess due to games like Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic 06 and Unleashed aimed for the return to form strategy yet of course the Wii is much weaker than the PS3 and Xbox 360.
@Grumblevolcano A side note, I'd also expect some of the "core gamer" games to be held for the announcement. I think it's good that Nintendo is allowing people to use the codename NX in their advertising for their games. Can't remember if that happened with unannounced Nintendo consoles in the past, but in the span before the announcement a couple more games from third parties with the NX after it wouldn't hurt.
@Grumblevolcano I'm not arguing here, because I don't feel strongly about it and I'm not that knowledgeable on Sonic history. But maybe SEGA learned from that experience.
@aaronsullivan "The portable portion of the NX is quite mysterious."
As opposed to the Home portion which is an open book?
It's all a mystery to me. And probably Nintendo too. Pricing, dates, announcements, who knows if they even have a solid road-map yet?
@rjejr haha. I looked back at my comment before your reply and it sounded silly.
I'd say they have a solid road map to the launch. I hope it goes at least a couple years out as I feel the Wii U was by the seat of their pants. To be fair, I think it quickly changed to that when the numbers came in so low. They did not expect such failure and I'm betting they have more fully-formed contingency plans this time. I mean... mobile is already that. Iwata was more of a dreamer I think than Kimishima who I see as a no-nonsense interim-CEO, sharp enough to see the problems with Wii U before it launched.
@aaronsullivan "Kimishima who I see as a no-nonsense interim-CEO"
Yeah, when his tenure is all said and done, the stock price will be at an all time high and Ntinedo will have name recognition like McDonalds, but all the gamers will be calling him "Whore-monger" or some such for "Selling out" Nitneod. Guys a businessman, it's his job to make money for the shareholders, gamers are his market, not his boss. Amusement parks, licensing products, tv shows, movies, mobile, it's all there for the taking.
I still want to know what NX is though, And an amibo game. Just 1, pretty please? Subspace Emissary 2 or bust, not Happy Home Designer or a board game. Id' say 3D arena fighting game, but DI just did that w/ Marvel Battlegrounds, and Lego D is doing it w/ Mr. T's van. I pity the fool who tries to compete w/ B.A.'s van.
Good stuff. It's about time that Sega gets back on their feet. They've been on a crazy rollercoaster and mainly focused on Sonic for a while now, but I think now they're rediscovering their identity as a company. It's also good to see how the NX is already included as a platform, so perhaps Capcom, EA, Ubisoft, Square Enix, Namco, etc will start to do the same thing with more and more 2017 releases
@Grumblevolcano The difference here being that the Wii was cheap to produce for and was already a massive success. They could afford to do it then. The NX is an HD console that will be more powerful than the Wii U and isn't guaranteed to succeed. It makes no sense to make a different version of the game for NX, as it wouldn't be a financially viable move. Not worth the investment.
You also forget that the PS4 and XB1 aren't exactly all that powerful to begin with.
@Blue_Blur it must be since you put a picture from the actual trailer as your profile page.
@rjejr No prob, the article did mention there may be more sonic characters, so tails may be in after all.
A vehicle tails would have some strange transformations though...
Another game added too the NX list .
Hopefully it brings back the serious tone the series lost since Unleashed, and it that style precisely.
Theres bound to be a good Sonic game eventually, hope this is the one.
@johnodaz
Cant wait for the NX!
@BiasedSonyFan Only that it's being targeted at 3 platforms, XB1, PS4, and NX. I'm presuming, perhaps naively, that SEGA won't want to be bothered with an underpowered console as part of this key release and especially an unproven one. That's all. Never crossed my mind anyone could think that was gameplay footage.
@rjejr Amiibo game, yes. I'd hope all your amiibo do something cool with the NX right out of the box. Make them come to life with a profile readout or trophy on the menu screen, or give customization abilities or a cool area where they interact even if it's not fighting.
Smash bros. is ten times the game those 3D fighters are though, isn't it? :/
Anyway just knowing is going to be nice one day I almost don't care what it is sometimes. lol
@Raylax Nice to see very reasoned and thought out posts here for once xD
I do hope you are right. I love classic Sonic too much to miss out on this.
I don't get it, both Sonics look the same...
This one called my attention. Seems nice!
I'm actually happy with the sonic mania news. SOnic games in recent times have been exclusive to Nintendo so the other platforms should have their own exclusive. Since I have a PS4 I will gladly buy it day one. As for Project 2017, I will buy it either for NX or PS4, depending on what the NX is. Great news last night!
meh
I don't play Sonic, so I don't really care.
I'm happy for those that do, though. Either way, it's good to see another company board the NX Express.
Choo choo.
Finally! We are heading the right direction! No more Sonic Boom!
Sonic Generations was better than Super Mario 3D World, so I´m looking forward to this and hoping for the best.
@astros75 I can't wait also .
@At_Lazuli Tbh at least it's more original than new super Mario bros. Sonic Mania has new levels/ music/ new sprites/ characters that aren't clones of each other e.g toad/toad.
It's beyond weird if Sonic Mania isn't coming to Nintendo platforms.
@Raylax Your theory is slightly debunked. VD-Dev (small indie company, same guys from ironfall) released a trailer for this racing game, and it actually said Nintendo NX trough all of the platforms. Later, they reuploaded it with it being blurred out. Vd-dev consists of 3 people only.
I'll only play this if they give us Chao again.
@aaronsullivan "Amiibo game, yes. I'd hope all your amiibo do something cool with the NX right out of the box. Make them come to life with a profile readout or trophy on the menu screen, or give customization abilities or a cool area where they interact even if it's not fighting."
Someday "amiibo Snap!" will be a thing. How they made WAra WAra Plaza, that Animal Crossing Plaza (Whatever that was) th eNtinedo LAnd hub world, then made amiibo, and never made amiibo interact w/ either Wara Wara or N Land is beyond me. And the fact that they dind't make it's own "plaza" is just wrong. Just let us tap them to the Gmaepad an dhave them "Warp" into Wara Wara like Skylanders warp into the game. Come on, it can't be that hard!!
Or at least a 2 1/2D amiibo snap. They are all in SSB, just use those models to drop them into a lobby. And why was there no Ntnedo Land 2: amiibo Land? Man, Wii U has some great games, but it seems like it is missing more than it has.
Miitomo should have been "amiibotomo" on the Wii U, just let them all come visit in that empty room. double
@rjejr Well, the answer is in the sales. It just wasn't worth it. You don't put icing on a cake made of poop. Nintendo could barely keep up with what should have been tent pole games so the other stuff just had to go by the way side.
I will say that if it wasn't more clever than just SSB models walking around, I'm kinda glad they didn't do it. The characters should at least have unique interactions with those around them. Again, I'd just like to see the mixing up two at a time thing play out. What does Link make of Samus?
Here's to the massive success of NX so we can find out. Subspace Emissary 2 or bust.
Amiibo snap though is a nice idea. I guess I don't mind if Pokemon Snap 2 becomes reality as a Universal theme park ride, but missing out on a version for the GamePad is video game tragedy!
