Are Nintendo games worth the price they decided to put on them, is a more realistic question. No, not always.
Nintendo may think they are to games what Apple is to Smartphones, but in reality not even Apple is what some people perceive them to be, there are phones out there that are just as good.
Metroid 5 could well be heading towards Mario Golf territory, a game that should have been much better, being full price, and getting average reviews.
If Nintendo quality checked their games Mario Golf would have been put back a few month for a refit.
Without the Gimmicks? Yes games on the Wii u were very gimmicky and so were Wii games. Both controllers turned out to be very gimmicky rather than innovations in the game world.
Well they have been discounted here in the UK many times and last week they had TWO thirds discount, and have always had favourable reviews. They will be back in the next sale. Like Lego City, Dragons Dogma and others. The price is high so they can give what seems like a high percentage discount in the sale. It's always the same games. Just saying.
Well, I cancelled my order for the game after reading NL's review. Speed Golf did not sell me the game. Maybe 10 plus courses may have done. But six, and most reviews said only three or four were any good was the main reason I am not playing it now.
A simple solution would be to have a more powerful Switch. And comparing a game to BotW shows the Switch does have its limitations. Nintendo had to make compromises to its original ideas of how BotW should look.
So many third party companies want their games on the Switch because it usually means big bucks and they lower their games quality to make them fit. Some do this better than others
If Nintendo want these games on their console then they should release a better one.
@NEStalgia yes, they know the games not up to standard, they knew this months ago, but needed to release it now and with an AAA price tag and only 6 courses. That is not good marketing.
@NEStalgia well that is a reason, but I don't agree with it.
First, Nintendo games do go on sale, I agree there was a time to when they didn't, but they do now, a sign of the times, I guess.
Mario Golf is below what we expect from them, the scores show that. Nintendo tell us, when a game is delayed, how they are still working on it. Yet they release this Golf game which is clearly below what we expect and what they would expect us to expect from them. This smacks of them removing content from the game to sell to us later, but which they may reconsider charging when they see the poor scoring.
It runs at a smooth 60 FPS. That's because the graphics are bland.
I would have given it a go but there just doesn't feel as though there is enough content. When you try to and please the single player and the multi players you sometimes please neither.
Nintendo's advertising seems to be selling it as a fun family game. Like most of its games this last year.
I also don't understand why they are holding back a chunk of the game just to give it to us for free at a later date. When it would help sell it now, and maybe it would look more like the game it should have been.
It's disappointing, Nintendo quite often says they need more time with a game so they can, do this or that to improve whatever and so the game is pushed back. I can't believe Nintendo thought this game was good to go.
@johnvboy playing devils advocate, something had to make you well aware if it wasn't a review. Me I played Mario Golf on the 3ds and on the strength of that I pre ordered this game.
The reviews I watched convinced me to give this one a miss.
@Mallow you are right looking at it from your perspective. And yes price is subjective, but it becomes less subjective if you earn $10 an hour and I earn $100 an hour.
Netflix would rather have your monthly subscription than you dip in once in a while for the odd movie. Like a diner that says fill your plate for $8. They know that most folk won't over eat.
To me value for money comes before cost, and according to six reviews I watched, this Mario Golf game is not good value, especially when it has been reported that DLC will be available.
All the reviews commented on the lack of courses. Is that because they are being held back to sell later.
@johnvboy well it's an expensive lucky dip if you are happy to gamble your fifty quid. Of course £50 may be loose change to you, so it won't be such a big gamble.
But you must have clicked this review for a reason.
@johnvboy when I spend £50 on a game I like to think I'm getting value for money. That's easy if there is a demo to play before you buy. Otherwise I rely on a few reviews. I know I may still not like the game regardless of a review, but it helps a bit before I spend fifty quid.
There will be a lot of folks who have bought this game and it's in the post to arrive tomorrow. And after reading the reviews maybe they will feel let down.
I've pre ordered and if I don't collect I don't pay.
What is annoying is that Nintendo released the game knowing it was not up to scratch, but are happy to take full price for it. Apparently there will be DLC later which I guess has been held back for a few months. That could have been included now.
DLC? Is that right there will be more courses? So we pay £50 for the game with only 6 courses and Nintendo will sell us the other four at a later date.
Well that's disappointing, the first big AAA game release after E3 and it's not even an AAA game. And compared to Mario Golf 3ds, which scored a 9, this Switch version gets a poor 7. And Nintendo is asking full price for this.
Ok some will try and justify the score and the price. But this is what will happen to other Nintendo releases this year, they won't live up to their expectations. I'm thinking the new 2d Metroid.
Some will say 7 is a good score, maybe, but it's not an 8 or 9 or 10. (Like IMMORTALS FENYX RISING that received a lower score that was expected, the price was lowered, same should happen here).
I'm due to collect my pre order tomorrow, I don't think I'll bother, unless any other reviews appear and convince me otherwise.
With a Nintendo Life review I always scroll to the end first to see the score, and if it's 7 or below I don't bother reading it. This was a 6. It would save me a lot of scrolling if NL put the score at the top of the review.
Then I look at another Nintendo only site, review and it gives it an 8.
I can't see how announcing that BotW is delayed yet again and maybe 18 months away and could be delayed ever longer, since 2022 is not written in stone, is anyone's favourite announcement.
Nintendo may not see themselves as a direct competitor, but they rely on third party games to fill the ever expanding gap between the release of their own games. And many of the big third party games have to be compromised so much to run on the Switch, which was not designed for those games.
Yes you are right, to get the best out of gaming, buy another console as well as the Switch, I have thought about this, I won't play any more games but I will have a better choice of what to buy. That will leave the Switch as mainly a handheld device, replacing the DS, and the PS will become the main home console.
If a new third party game were released on all three consoles at the same time I would buy the PS version for the better graphics etc rather than being able to play it on the go, since I don't play games away from home.
As for console price, plenty of Nintendo gamers would pay more for a more powerful Switch, just as Xbox and PlayStation owners may have a Switch Lite.
If Nintendo don't release a more powerful Switch, it's not because they can't it's because they are complacent enough not to.
I don't download many games and I have a large SD card so not an issue.
But if you extend the question to physical games and instead of delete, ask, trade or sell.
I will sell most of my physical games while they still retain some value. Next to go is Smash Bros.
Nintendo is a small company who make games and a couple of consoles to play the games on. They are not electronic or computer giants like Sony and Microsoft. From being up high one minute with the Wii they can be right down the next with the Wii U (when there were talks of them being taken over).
Nintendo spends to much time on innovation and not enough on their core product, games. If their next console is only as successful as the Wii u, they may not stop a takeover.
It's far better to expand the product range by introducing another Switch variant now, a more powerful one that lots of gamers want, rather than thinking the cheap Lite will keep shareholders happy. Lite gamers do not spend the big bucks.
Look what happened to the Nintendo shares after E3. The Direct did not please the shareholders this time.
It's a full priced game, and that could be an issue. It doesn't look like it should be full priced.
It's a game that may well have a chunk of a discount within six months. Two games in one is fine if you know you already like Advanced Wars and don't mind the graphics or if they release a demo first.
But if Nintendo want to charge that sort of money for what looks like a game that would be at home on a mobile device, they should have made sure is look better.
Mr Bowser is rather repetitive. How many different reincarnations of the ds/3ds did we have without it being referred to as a new console, it was an upgrade or new variation. As is the Switch Lite.
Is Nintendo sticking with the Switch concept or are they eventually going to be dumping it for something new as they usually do with each new Nintendo console? If so we can expect the Switch to remain as it is for a few more years.
BUT we are talking about another Switch variant NOT a new console. Nintendo is attracting lots of new sales with the Lite. It's a cheap way for kids, families, PS and Xbox owners to play Animal Crossing and Mario games. But at the other end of the gaming spectrum as well as Mario and other Nintendo games, gamers want open world and third party games that run much better than they do now on the present Switch.
Its these gamers that either have other consoles or maybe considering getting one, like myself. This will eventually eat into Nintendo sales. With two consoles my game spending will be split because I won't necessarily play more games, just have a wider choice.
Like many, I change my smartphone every year for the latest version. It is out in October, and I all ready know what it looks like and what spec it has. Nintendo should be a bit more user friendly.
Allowing for the fact that NL, being a Nintendo only site, their articles and reviews will be slightly biased.
And I guess the article is aimed at the US market with the price in dollars. £50 (UK price) converts to $69.
Surely you would play the game first before you put a value on it. Looking good and getting a Metroid 4 substitute is not enough unless you are PR for Nintendo.
This is a 2d game that would be equally at home on the 3ds at a price of £30.
I know physical copies are a few percent cheaper and have a resale value, but it's not for the gamers who buy games new, to subsidise Nintendo for the lost revenue from second hand sales.
@Friendly I did watch Arlo yesterday and while I was a fan of his I no longer watch him regularly. That excitement in his voice was a little over the top: unless he ment it to be over the top because that's what Arlo does. But I don't think he was. He seems to be less critical because he now receives codes to preview some games. (He doesn't review many because he says he doesn't have the time).
OkMetroid is a game I would pick up if I am really short of something to play.
The real issue is that Nintendo has a bigger and wider consumer base than it did 10 years ago, they no longer just wants platform, racing, party and shooting games, the range has got a lot bigger and includes multi player as well. But not every gamer wants to play every type of game, and with Nintendo's limited output of games per year it will never please everyone, unless you are a gamer that enjoys most everything Nintendo release.
'What games do I want to see more of'......
Mario, Zelda, Mario Kart, Yoshi, Fire Emblem (and beyond the Wiiu, games like Waverace, 1080⁰ Snowboarding, Pilotwings.)
But Nintendo's expanded list of genres means that it can't meet the demand. At the moment and with the Switch Lite doing well, Nintendo is all about party games, family games, multi player games.
What is significant about 29 May 2014?
That is when the last Mario Kart game was released.
@Friendly Retiring the 3DS was a blessing and a curse. Game cards fit both Switches, game sale totals will be higher, and production costs will be lower and of course gaming on the go.
But there were more Nintendo games available between the two consoles.
But I guess it is what it is. I might give Stadia another go, we recently got ultra fast broadband installed in our area.
@Friendly Nintendo are aiming at the new generation of gamers, the Switch Lite and those that did not buy a Wii U, but have since bought the Original Switch.
I (and many others) don't play Pokémon, or Mario Party, let alone an old N64 Mario party, and we have bought and played most of the ported games from the Wii u days.
But to the new Generation of gamers, every game is new. There is very little new AAA Nintendo games for their long term loyal gamers. I rely on third party games.
But the topic is about 'speculation' and my reply was that the AAA games Iike BotW are being held back until a new Switch version is released. Which explains the lack of decent games for those that have been with Nintendo for the longest time.
@Friendly a games list is subjective. There is nothing on the list from Nintendo I want to spend money on. We knew about Golf so that was not really part of the Direct.
Is one a month almost two month? Or are you trying to make the list sound better than it is.
If you call Metroid 5 an AAA game, ok, it certainly will be priced as an AAA, but I would stop at AA.
@Friendly it was just Nintendo games I was referring to, mentioned in the direct for the first time. Zelda and Mario Golf were announced last month. I've pre-ordered Golf. Monster Hunter is not Nintendo, and old games given a face lift can't be considered AAA, can they.
I think any anticipation for BotW 2 fizzled out long ago.
"Zelda botW 2 is not ready yet but we are working hard on it and hope to get it to you in 2022, here we have a clip to show you. And in the mean time here is a Zelda we remade earlier, out in July."
If you like what's on offer you will most likely see the Direct as good.
But the games on offer seem like a weak choice with no wow factor to me.
I will get Mario Golf and Zelda in July and that's it for the year. And those games were previously announced so I don't count them as part of the Direct.
So for the rest of the year my gaming will be on hold unless some third party games come to the rescue. Or if advance Wars gets a good score I'll give it a go.
I buy games I want to play but this year and last year I find myself looking for games to play, games I would not otherwise consider.
Nintendo can't please all the people all the time and for me Mario Party, Pokémon, Wario and games aimed predominantly at the Japanese market are not what I would play. So for me it was a particularly poor show
Nintendo are holding back on their big games, for what ever reason.
Most graphic styles can be overlooked if the strategy part works well. Chess is chess regardless of what style or look the pieces have.
That said, it does look like a ported mobile game.
We know the advantages of playing a game on the Switch on the go. But this does look as though it was made for the Switch Lite handheld market. I would like to have seen a Fire Emblem style that would look good on the big screen.
But two games at a budget price and I'll probably give it a go, if it scores 8 or above.
@VoidofLight yes you are right I was expecting a new Switch announcement, with a release date, even for next Easter. I still maintain that BotW2 is a launch title for a new console and I guess an announcement for that could now be next year since 2022 has been suggested for BotW 2.
I'm talking about BotW 1 which was launched simultaneously on the Wii u and the Switch, the same will happen with BotW 2. Simultaneously on both the Switch and new console.
Metroid is not a big franchise, although a welcome one for some gamers, and I guess it will sell reasonably well because of the, so far, lack of choice.

82% is ok. But you've got to like the idea of arcade golf. Which I do, (but not Tennis).

Re: Soapbox: The Zelda: Breath of The Wild 2 Trailer Is Already Spawning Theories
Re: Soapbox: The Zelda: Breath of The Wild 2 Trailer Is Already Spawning Theories
Re: Soapbox: The Zelda: Breath of The Wild 2 Trailer Is Already Spawning Theories
Re: Talking Point: Nintendo Delivered An Excellent E3 Direct For Fans Old And New
To be fair Mario Golf and Zelda were known about before the Direct so hardly count as new announcements.
Re: Soapbox: The Zelda: Breath of The Wild 2 Trailer Is Already Spawning Theories
@Friendly it was just Nintendo games I was referring to, mentioned in the direct for the first time. Zelda and Mario Golf were announced last month. I've pre-ordered Golf.
Monster Hunter is not Nintendo, and old games given a face lift can't be considered AAA, can they.
Re: The E3 2021 Awards Winners Are In, But Nintendo Lost Out
Well it's obvious why it's not Nintendo's year.
I think any anticipation for BotW 2 fizzled out long ago.
"Zelda botW 2 is not ready yet but we are working hard on it and hope to get it to you in 2022, here we have a clip to show you. And in the mean time here is a Zelda we remade earlier, out in July."
Re: Talking Point: Nintendo Delivered An Excellent E3 Direct For Fans Old And New
If you like what's on offer you will most likely see the Direct as good.
Re: The Worms Battle Royale Action Game Arrives On Switch Next Week
I have the other Worms on the Switch. While it's a good fun strategy game, the worms are really to small while playing in hand held.
Re: Shantae Developer WayForward Is Making Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp
Most graphic styles can be overlooked if the strategy part works well. Chess is chess regardless of what style or look the pieces have.
That said, it does look like a ported mobile game.
We know the advantages of playing a game on the Switch on the go. But this does look as
though it was made for the Switch Lite handheld market. I would like to have seen a Fire Emblem style that would look good on the big screen.
But two games at a budget price and I'll probably give it a go, if it scores 8 or above.
Re: Soapbox: The Zelda: Breath of The Wild 2 Trailer Is Already Spawning Theories
@Otoemetry and you are talking as though you have inside information about Nintendo's marketing strategy, rather than just giving your opinion.
'Claptrap' suggests you don't have opinions.
Re: Soapbox: The Zelda: Breath of The Wild 2 Trailer Is Already Spawning Theories
