There are a lot of Nintendo Switch games to look forward to, but one upcoming release that's just around the corner is Mario Golf: Super Rush. In fact, it's out next week!
Ahead of the latest entry, the famous Japanese publication Famitsu has shared the very first review of the game. As you might already know, this outlet uses a special system where four reviewers rate the game between one and ten, and then combine the scores together to create a rating out of 40.
So, how has Super Rush on the Nintendo Switch gone? According to a translation courtesy of Nintendo Everything, three reviewers gave the game eight out of ten and one rated it nine out of ten - tallying the overall score to 33 out of 40.
The new speed golf mode seems to have received good feedback and the adventure mode is also welcome. And just like previous entries, this latest one apparently does a great job bringing out "the best things about golf" and guiding users through its controls.
The previous entry - Mario Golf: World Tour, which was released on the Nintendo 3DS in 2014, scored one better - 34 out of 40. Two reviewers gave it an eight, and two reviewers gave it a nine out of ten (thanks, Gematsu).
Keep an eye out for our own Nintendo Life review of Mario Golf: Super Rush later this week. Do you think you'll be returning to the fairway? Leave a comment down below.

I've loved Mario Golf since N64. Can't wait for this new one. I played the 3DS version for well over 200 hours.
Also OB Toad can go kick rocks.
Been waiting for this for years. Looking forward to giving it a shot myself on Friday.
Isn't 33 out of 40 really low for a first party Nintendo game by famitsu standards?
who cares about Famitsu lol
LOL Famitsu....... their reviews are always lacking in detail and about as useful as reading the back of the game boxes.
In fact you can read the translation at the the Nintendo Everything article linked above and yep..... they're basically a pointless list of features.
I've been holding off pre-ordering it as I've got the feeling it could end up being mediocre like Mario Tennis Aces. Hopefully I'm wrong there but that's a pretty low score from Famitsu which isn't too promising.
I mean. i'm mixed about this game already. I think it will be a great party game and a good online game like the 3DS game was but... I just have a feeling that the single player 'rpg' bit won't scratch the itch I've had since the GBA days. Hopeful but realistic.
Famitsu is a joke. I'll never forgive them for rating sonic mania lower than sonic forces.
@tanaka2687 I'm concerned that they've favoured the Speed Golf over everything else and even made flatter, more simplistic courses to accommodate it.
The whole concept of the game just feels a little shallow to me, as though some marketing person decided golf is too slow and boring for people these days so they need to make it more like Mario Kart and have explosions, special moves and other gimmicks... I liked how chilled the N64 and GameCube games were. It will be hard to beat Toadstool Tour for me!
I am looking forward to this. Already pre-ordered
@dBackLash
hmm… three gave 8/10 and one gave 9/10
thats not low at all! 8.25 score
@Clyde_Radcliffe Those are the vibes I'm getting from this too. The gameplay itself is probably fine but the courses/backgrounds mostly look pretty bland and uninspired which is throwing me off. It sorta looks like a generic golf game with Mario characters thrown in rather than a golf game being set in the Mushroom Kingdom/Mario universe.
The Speed Golf looks a bit too gimmicky for me. Doubt I'd play it more than once or twice so I'm not so thrilled about that getting such a large focus over everything else.
@lovesushi Famitsu tend to gives scores like that to pretty mediocre games though. Mario Party 10, for example, also scored a 33/40 and Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival scored a 32/40 and both those games are awful. Famitsu reviews should really just be ignored altogether but if you're intent on looking into them then you should be hoping for more like the 36-40/40 range most of the time.
@noobish_hat
i love arlo but lately his videos seem to be a news roundup which is nice for background noise well playing games or complaining about paper mario
I'm really looking forward to this and will be downloading it at the end of the week. As long as the online play is good, I'll get a lot out of it.
After just playing through Mario Golf for 3DS and becoming endlessly annoyed with the camera controls, I decided to cancel my pre-order and opted instead for Tony Hawk (same day release).
Camelot's track record of releasing unfinished games to then update well after the fact and patch, most definitely give me a sense of confidence.
plus..... honestly the last thing I would want out of a golf game, is RUSHING and speeding. I was so excited but up until now I will wait and see on this one.
On the flip side, I recently bought Golf Story and loving the heck out of it!!
.
it looks like a mario sports game. honestly i know for most this year is stacked but for me , who really only gets first party and some indies that look amazing like bug fables, this year is only really party games. looks like my only pickups will be skyward sword and possibly dread
@BenAV Yeah I mean even the title of the game is named after it. The courses definitely look quite bland, though they showed New Donk City in the e3 Direct so maybe the free DLC ones will be more inspiring.
Did anyone really need to wait for a review score to figure out this was a low effort cash grab? Even Famitsu didn't want to carry Nintendo's water on this one.
@Clyde_Radcliffe
Toadstool Tour still the best! Long live the GC.
I love that video games create a space to take golf, possibly the most boring sport in existence for the viewer, and make it more interesting and exciting. While I have learned over the years that Famitsu might possibly have issues with corruption, I think it’s still worth keeping an eye on this game to see how it unfolds!
NINJA APPROVED
Got this pre ordered. Really looking forward to it. Hope the online is good. I got over 100 hours online with Mario aces. I’m ready
The game looks fun but I'm not a big fan of golf so I doubt I'll buy it until way in the future when I can get it cheap
I want a Mario Boxing & Kickboxing for other Sport Mario games with Mii on it.
@Chowdaire sonic forces is dope. Avengers Endgame of the Sonic Games
@Ambassador_Kong Royal Ambassador, this humble ninja is interested in this game, but is willing to hear Your Excellency’s grievances with said game for further ponderance.
Day one for me and looking forward to receiving my pre-order next week...... FORE!!!! Lets a go!!
@Chowdaire I also rate Mania below Forces. People have different opinions and that’s ok!
I pre-ordered it earlier this week. It looks like it will be fun and I like the look of the courses and modes included, plus the fact more courses and characters will be added in the future. I liked World Tour on the 3DS so I'm sure I'll enjoy this. I also really liked Mario Tennis Aces on the Switch so I'm sure they will have done a good job on this as well.
Expected a fore out of 10.
@Krambo42 yeah, bad opinions! (Just jokin')
OH NOOOEEEEESSS! It didn't get four 10s across the board! My hype is RUIIINNNEEEEDDD!!!1!! Nintendo is LOOOSIIIING IIIITTT!!!1!
...Seriously, 33 out of 40 is good and I haven't gotten to sit down to a Mario Golf game in a long time. I liked the ones I've played, I'm picking this one up day one. :3
Famitsu is just the GameSpot for Nintendo games.
The review is good, you just have to compare it with other golf games, not expect BotW rating. Last Mario Golf had 34. 33 is absolutely fine. And Famitsu, anyway, has never been.. accurate.
I, personally, am anticipating this game and excited to play it at the end of the week. I pre-ordered it and keep it ordered, it'll be fun (last fun game on Switch was, like, one year ago (Paper Mario) )
@soracloud28 i would like to believe that… but why does sonic forces have such low ratings all over different reviews?
i really would buy it finally but well…
I consider Famitsu scores pretty much meaningless. This is actually the magazine that gave Demons Souls 29/40.
Okay so now that Mario Golf is good and done, time for Camelot to get back to making a new Golden Sun.
@chipia Yup, and Sonic Forces 35/40.. Luigi's Mansion 3 had 33/40. Yup, the same rating than this Mario Golf. So, just make your own opinion
Geez. In the Famitsu, everything scores at least 30/40. Can't take them seriously.
I hope the game will be good
I need to apologize to everyone for thinking this game was gonna be lame, i never got the gist of golf on any game, or irl, and the only mario golf game i have was played mario golf on 3ds, this genuinely looks like a really fun game that may really get me hooked, even sorta got me interested in real golf, i still prefere Mario Tennis Aces a bit but this just looks like a real treat I'll have to pick up, the story might not be the best, but it looks fun as well
@BenAV if you call Aces mediocre, than what would you say about Ultra Smash on Wii U? 😁
I'd say, the the Golf series was so far pretty good with all entries.
Tennis was bad on Wii(New Play Control) and Wii U and 3DS entry also wasn't too special.
But I really enjoyed Aces
@Nintendo4Sonic Ultra Smash looked terrible so I never bought it in the first place.
@BenAV jep, Ultra Smash was sooo disappointing. Besides the local Multiplayer in mind, the game was useless.
@Kaori-chan
i mostly follow him due to the fact he doesn't think it is comedy to cuss every five seconds. i used to love his content but know he just complains. i remember in the revisiting color splash video he used it's poor sales as a knock on the game. but in pikmin 3 videos he chalks it's poor sales up to being on the wii u. the oragami king video iss the worst it has got though. he said the battle system was bad because the puzzles were to hard for him. ever since that remaster thousand year door video all he does is complain
Actually the only mario golf game I played was the demo on the 3ds, and I loved it, night pick this up at a later date though.
The game looks really bland to me. I was hoping it would be more arcade-y. The courses look flat and their isn't much flair to anything.
This game is pretty much review-proof. It's Mario Golf. It would have to be almost unplayable for it to not sell a million copies, and it's not going to be unplayable because these are Nintendo's babies and they won't let that happen. Likewise, it would take divine intervention to make a game in this series anything more than a solid good time. So 33 out of 40 is about what I would expect for it.
Buying, probably early on, but not Day One.
For me its all about the single player content. It needs to have a rubust, chock full single player with alot of replay value. I cant help thinking that it will be very much focused on the online, like Tennis was and the campaign will be an afterthought and very short. We will see.
@BenAV I actually picked up Mario tennis aces a few days ago. I believe it's received a lot of post launch content updates and balance patches. It's a really great game now. Just wish a few more people were playing online. Come back to it, friend! 😂
Why is everyone so angry? Their scores only count when they fit the narrative? Grown men whining about a score. Lol!!! The game looks extremely run of the mill. Not sure why everyone is crying.
82% is ok. But you've got to like the idea of arcade golf. Which I do, (but not Tennis).
It scored less that the previous Mario Golf, so with a brand new console we can expect no more than the previous game offered.
It will be interesting to see a cross section of reviews.
@dBackLash reviews are so subjective dude just don't listen to them and look at the first few minutes and see if it looks like fun to you. Maybe ask a friend. But chose for yourself over reviews. I used to just get games that reviewed well and now some of my favorites didn't review well
I only had the money for either this or pro skater 1&2 so I got Pro skater but this is definitely on the wishlist.
@Thatsalie 1) Nobody here seems angry. Perhaps genuinely curious for various reasons, but no anger.
2) You don’t just magically know everybody’s age here, so that assumption falls flat.
3) Nobody is crying.
4) You’re welcome. Have a nice day.
This is literally the first Mario Golf game I have ever been interested in playing. None of the other games ever appealed to me, unlike the Mario Tennis series, which is weird because I love Golf video games far more than Tennis video games.
I used to play the old golf games on the NES. I never had an interest in playing Mario Golf. I don’t know why. Actually, I look at golf games today and wonder what’s the appeal. 🤷🏾♂️ 😂
@lovesushi I’ve seen people on here condemning games or saying they’ll wait for a deep deep discount because they were “only a 9”....
@BloodNinja
You are clearly angry.
I'm looking forward to it, and if it turns out to be a game I'm not interested in, I just won't purchase it.
@Thatsalie And you are clearly a troll. I read all the comments and nobody on here is crying about the score!
NINJA'S POINTS APPROVED
@Thatsalie It’s so clear. I broke my phone typing to you
Its Famitsu so I will.wait for a real review site, Nintendo life and push square seem to be the only places that give Famitsu the time of day. I would trust my dog too give a better review than they could.
Just think it will be like Mario tennis very little single player content , if it is it's a hard pass for me.
I absolutely loved Mario Golf 64. I'm really excited for this one. ... but $60 is kind of steep. I may wait for a Black Friday deal down the road.
These Mario sports games always hover around the 7-8 type scores, which is fine for me!
Pre-ordered it ages ago. I'm hoping adventure and standard both play well. I have absolutely zero interest in the other modes - speed golf looks like rubbish, but appreciate there will be an audience for it.
Tennis Aces was ultimately disappointing because it lost sight of being a good tennis game... I hope Golf can deliver a good golf game which frankly Switch has needed for years (Golf Story a welcome bonus).
@JHDK there was a mario gold on n64?? Where have I been?
I loved Mario golf on the game cube. This next entry comes with so much nostalgia!
@B_Lindz they've been pretty generous lately, marking down first party titles by 40%. That wouldn't be too bad of an idea.
Could I wait it out as long as you, ehh. Lets find out.
So any word on wacky courses, or are they all going to be like a real golf course as the trailers have shown so far?
Was everyone expecting a 10 out of 10 or something?
34 out of 40 is a great score.
Id have given it a 7 out of 10, because golf.
I don't like Mario games and I don't like golf games. Hard pass.
@Kang81 On Nintendo's E3 presentation they showed a course set in New Donk City from Mario Odyssey but said it and other courses would be free DLC.
Clearly expectations for actual lovely art have dropped in recent times, because this game is just ugly imo, and actually looks to me like they may have just reused the Breath of the Wild Engine/assets to slap together some fugly courses and then slap the Mario characters in there in a visual style that doesn't even match.
@impurekind You just mean for Nintendo? As there are some quite exceptional artistic indie titles in recent times.
All reviews by companies or you tubers are all biased. They all have something to gain by doing them. I literally listen to no review actual as they are all biased as everyone is different
The fiancée wants this game, so I'll probably play it as well, however, I would much prefer another Mario baseball or soccer game instead.
8 out of 10 is usually the sign it’s gonna be pretty good
@Alpha008 apparently not good enough for this website?
I wonder if this site is actually paid by Nintendo directly? It definitely seems like it.
@RoguePirate considering they have a sister site that specialises in PlayStation news, I.e direct competitors to Nintendo, I doubt it.
Or are you talking about famitsu? In that case, I have no idea
I'm looking forward to it, but I admit there are features I may never end up using, such as Speed Golf. It looks like there will be additional courses coming via DLC that will help to extend its life, and they look fun, but by and large I prefer my golf games and their courses to be more grounded and less fantastical.
To be honest, I'm actually going to be far more excited when Sony announces their next console generation installment of the Everybody's Golf/Hot Shots Golf franchise. I've gotten a lot of mileage from those games ever since the PS2 entries. Enough so that it just might prompt me to pull the trigger on upgrading to a PS5 (assuming I could find one by then).
There seems to be a lot of confusion regarding why a 8-ish is considered low for Famitsu.
In 35 years of publishing, Famitsu has only given one single negative review for a game, it was a 48. They have an insanely, large, bloated curve. Getting a good review from Famitsu is a sign the sky is blue.
That said, I could care less if this is considered 'low' for them. They gave Donkey Kong Country 2 an even lower score than this, and that's a 10/10 game for me.
@Alpha008 it just seems like this site constantly gives a free pass to all Nintendo first party games. Like Nintendo are slipping them money to do it.
Doesn't matter how bad the game maybe.
Famitsu gives this game a reasonable score of 33 out of 40 and these guys are all up in arms about it, like a golf game is gonna get 40 out of 40 just because Nintendo made it.
@blindsquarel Bug Fables was great. Hades was too. I've been really digging all the Indies that are on Switch. The Ori games weren't as good as the above two but were another really fun one, and those are just a few from the top of my head.
@Obi-Juan I hear ya!
And yea, the N64 version was simply called "Mario Golf". It was tons of fun (except for when OB Toad showed up).
@RoguePirate I’m struggling to see where the quote unquote “up in arms” stuff is in this article.
All it mentions is that the previous entry scored one point higher. Are you sure we’re looking at the same article here?
You’ve got me interested. Which games are you referring too that they’ve given a higher score than you believe be worthy? I’m interested to know.
Not all "professional" review scores necessarily indicate the quality of a given game. Certainly it's a better indicator when you can get several reviews from multiple sources and they go into specific details about the same things, but even then the best way to know for certain is to try a game yourself.
A great example from personal experience is Daisenryaku: Modern Military Tactics Exceed for the PS2 and XBox. It received straight 5s (out of 10) from EGM when it released, and most other reviews around the industry gave it similar marks. The reasons: very simple visuals, droning, repetitive music, and a bland single-player campaign.
However, none of those reviews mentioned a couple of elements that would prove critical in making it one of my all-time favorite videogames: local turn-based multiplayer for up to 4 players (any combination of humans and AI) and a Map Editor. It also didn't hurt that it had a borderline encyclopedic list of units (around 400) across 8 countries (USA, Russia, China, Japan, Germany, UK, France, and Israel), all with surprisingly accurate ratings for stuff like firepower, range, armor protection, even stealth.
On a lark I introduced DSVII to some visiting friends to try its multiplayer. That group grew to include about 8 people, every one of whom bought their own copy of the game, and we played many HUNDREDS of hours on it, often 10-plus hour sessions that ran into the wee hours of the night (it's worth mentioning that there was a PS3 and newer, shinier-looking games that were largely ignored all that time).
And all because of features that pro reviewers didn't deem important enough to include in their appraisals. Again, the value of any given game is what YOU personally get out of it.
Thats why always look at other sites reviews score for second opinions dont rely on just one site even though ign tends to be a hit and miss at times.
Just another fash cash-in, Mario sports game, it's a hard pass for me! Do Nintendo fans really think this is worth 60 bucks?!
Famitsu gave a Japanese game a 33 out of 40? That doesn't sound good.
I've got PGA Tour 2K21 and Neo Turf Masters (and the fabulous Golf Story), so I think I'm covered for golf games on the Switch.
Mario Tennis on Switch had the most frustrating single player campaign I've played in a Mario sports game. Once I got to the level where you had to hit the ball back 100 times, I was out. Sorry, I'm all for variety, but things like that are pulling teeth.
I'm still very disappointed there is only 2-player local multiplayer for the speed golf mode. That was the biggest draw for me to play with my family. TVs are massive now, no reason you can't have it split into 4 giant rectangles.
@Alpha008 i dunno, maybe I'm just taking too much offence at them being petty and pointing how a golf game on the 3DS scored slightly better.
It's probably just me taking too much exception to them pointing it out.
@Clyde_Radcliffe
Thanks, I really didn't watch or pay attention to much of the whole E3 weekend news.
Already pre-ordered and loaded up in my Switch for launch day play!
I’m looking forward to this one, but probably going to wait for a $40 sale. I’m not desperate to play it, and it won’t be going out of print any time soon. Paper Mario and Pikmin just hit $30, so it may not take too long.
Already pre ordered, ready to golf! 😁 Love golf games with different modes like rush etc.
@impurekind
I think this game looks very good. Don't see any issues with it.
@Ambassador_Kong
I'm highly interested in this game.
I've had enough of people calling things "lazy" or "low-effort". It is pretty obvious effort was put into this game. It is never going to be as amazing as Breath of the Wild considering it is a golf game, but that doesn't mean it is low effort.
Why can people no longer just say something isn't for them? Why does everything we don't like now have to be "lazy" or "low-effort"? It is disrespectful to everyone who has worked on this.
I'm really looking forward to this one and I only play single player, so I really hope not to get disappointed
Rough score for 1st-party Nintendo game with Mario, is it not?
Then again, scores are pointless anyways.
Just hope the single player campaign is a bit longer in this one then the one on the 3DS which can be completed in a couple of hours
We only ever get Golf and Tennis. I'd be there for Strikers. But not more of the same. And golf is uck anyway
@Mando44646 I am not a fan of golf, but tried the 3ds version and loved it! Give it a chance!
@JHDK Im really hyped for this one
If there's a demo, I'll try it. I'm not sure I can get into Mario Golf.
I'm glad people are starting to see Famitsu for what they are. It feels like 10 years people acted they were some kind of Japanese Edge, but instead they feel super mainstream with a strong suspicion they will review a game well in exchange for a company spending on ads inside the pages.
Regardless of what they say, I'm always interested in a new Mario Golf. Very relaxing games.
@Mando44646 This is the first console Mario Golf in just under 18 years.
Expanding on this - excluding handhelds, here's what we've got in the past 20 years in all the major Mario sports franchises:
Olympics: 3 Wii, 2 Wii U, Switch
Tennis: Gamecube, Wii (remake of GC), Wii U, and Switch
Baseball: Gamecube, Wii
Soccer: Gamecube, Wii
Golf: Gamecube
As far as console releases, Golf was the most dormant! We did get the 3DS game, of course, but even that was the first release in the series in ten years. I do wish they'd leave Tennis alone and give us another Sluggers or Strikers.
@Bret I guess I'm thinking handhelds. I generally only spend a lot of time on handhelds when it comes to Nintendo. But yeah you're right.
@Mando44646 I guess when I think about Mario sports titles I think of sitting on the couch with my cousins and sisters, not playing alone on a handheld. I never like the handheld ones as much.
@msvt Your loss.
@TMNHertl Yes, I mean ain terms of Nintendo's games.
@Dog
thanks for caring expert of all things mario golf.
lol
One of my favorite franchises since Mario Golf Advanced Tour. It still baffles me that we never got a motion controlled Mario Golf offering on the Wii, but I guess the Switch version is making up for it?
@BenAV I played a ton of Wii Sports golf, and the moment I saw this new game I immediately thought "wii golf with mario characters". That being said I REALLY want this to be good. Golf Story and goofy golf games are my jam
@iSmokeWii If it does end up being disappointing then at least we've still got Sports Story to look forward to, whenever that eventually releases.
Where are the reviews from other outlets? Is there an embargo that famitsu was permitted to break early? The game is out tomorrow.
@Liam_Doolan any idea when the NLife review will be up?
@impurekind Oh I agree then.
I'd love a new Mario Strikers.
