Earlier today Square Enix held a 30th anniversary live stream for the Mana series. During the broadcast, fans found out a new game is in the works.
As much as the producer Masaru Oyamada wanted to share a "cool" video announcement, nothing is ready to be shown just yet. The most he was willing to reveal is that this game is being prepared for a "console" release and the series' creator (who also happens to be the current CEO of Grezzo) has already seen it.
Fans were also reminded that the 30th anniversary of the Mana series has only just kicked off and reassured a more official announcement was on the way. Keep in mind though, it might be a while before this new entry is actually released. Here's the full translation, courtesy of RPG Site:
It would have been good if we could make a cool video announcement with a bang, but the 30th anniversary has just begun. To be honest, we are developing it. We are working on it, but please wait a little longer for the announcement. In fact, Mr. Ishii [Mana series creator, current CEO of Grezzo] took a look at it the other day. That's how far we've come, so I hope you'll look forward to it. We still have a long way to go in development.... We're preparing to release it on consoles, and we'd be glad if you can wait for it.
The latest Mana release - Legend of Mana - arrived on consoles earlier this week. In our own Switch review, we said it was the best way to play the 21-year-old title. What would you like to see next from the Mana series? Have you tried out Legend of Mana on the Switch? Comment below.

Wasn’t thrilled with the performance of Trials on Switch. Hopefully a more bespoke performance can be wrought on Switch
Time flows like a river...and history repeats.
Love the Mana series. It's does sound an awfully long time away but good news nonetheless.
Played trials, thinking about Legend.
Nope.
Not interested with Seiken Densetsu series.
I got Secret of Mana PS4 last 2 year but i almost didn't touch it.
Turned off by Trials of Mana after tried the demo Switch version, so cringey.
I want Dragon Quest Builders 3 with much better features than DQB 2.
I’m surprised they don’t steal all those great QOL enhancements from romhacking.net and just update the SNES version for a mini-release.
HACK NINJA APPROVED
Perfect. Trials felt like a win for a series that has desperately needed one.
Playing through Trials a year ago I remembered how much I like those old school jrpgs like chrono trigger that focus on a quick light-hearted adventure that has fun incentives to replay multiple times.
My #1 wish would be a remake of SoM in the same style as the Trials remake. I am absolutely in love with the Trials of Mana remake but the SoM remake from a few years ago does not look like much of an upgrade over the original SNES game. In fact, I actually prefer the visuals of the original SNES game.
So yea, that would be my wish. ^_^ Or a Mana 5 I s'pose... that could be cool too!
I still need to play Mana 4. Anyone played it have opinions on if it's good/bad/neither?
I just really need for them to make sure it's a decent multi-player couch co-op. The SNES series did it best, and they haven't really scratched that itch for me since.
Happy to hear. I just hope they don't try to introduce yet another new wrinkle to the gameplay/style/flow/etc. Whatever they come up with, I hope it's directly inspired by Sword/Secret (especially)/Trials of Mana and no other entries. And though unlikely, I'd prefer it be sprites to polygons, but if it's good, I'm still down.
Awesome news, even though it's still far from completion.
I just hope it's like the Trials of Mana remake. I love that game. However, it'd be fantastic if they could add multiplayer to it, like the originals...
As much as I love the first four Mana games and 3 of the 4 remakes (Trials was awesome, Sword was decent, Adventures was okay had it not made as a mobile game but the Secret of Mana remake was garbage) I think I would much prefer a new entry in the Chrono series or maybe a full 3D remake of Chrono Trigger like how they do Trials of Mana or a pixel 2D HD remake like Dragon Quest III. At this point I have had enough of the Mana games. Heck a Secret of Evermore remake would be much more appreciated.
Is it going to be a new entry? If so, that's awesome!! I love that square is finally pushing the mana series again. Sort of just fell off the map for a while there
Really hoping (like some others have said) it will be like the first three games without new gimmicks. Multiplayer would be very nice too and of course an amazing soundtrack! If it will be 3D I hope it'll be like Trials of Mana remake but a bit better.
The bad I haven't finish the first one yet because of the backlogs.
The Trials of Mana remake was such a pretty game, so I really hope the new game will be in that art style. Mana is a really good series and I'm glad Square Enix has been focusing on it more recently!
Someone needs to revive Lunar
Hmm I don't know... I'd rather have a new game by Grezzo
I am wooking... ahem, looking forward to it. Damn you Charlotte!
Why does SE announce games so far in advance? I just don't understand why they do this. They literally announce games that have barely left the planning stage, and for what? It's so damn annoying.
@Anti-Matter why don't you try the original games then? They're all-time classics, I think you might be more "interested" in them 🐸
Hopefully the next Mana game will run on UE5.
Secret of Mana sequel we never got until recently was the last great Mana game. Legends was... weird. Not sure if they can ever recapture that magic.
@Jcdbengals I wish I could say Trials of Mana was 'great'.
I'm currently replaying it, now, and am reminded of how much more I enjoyed Secret of Mana.
I loved Trials… played through twice! Happy to hear the news

A million new Mana games-but SE can’t manage to bring back Chrono Trigger for the life of themselves. SMH.
Mana's a special series for me. SoM introduced me to RPGs. "This is like Zelda, but so much deeper," young me thought. It's a very flawed game--every Mana game I've played is flawed to an extent--but it has a charm all its own. Those graphics, too, and that music. Oh, that music!
So I'm glad to hear Mana's getting a new game, even though I don't know when or if I'll play it. But gaming needs Mana. It just does.
Well, it probably won't be for Switch will it. Or it's successor. They haven't released a new main series Mana game on a Nintendo console for decades. We only ever get the remakes that are released cross platform and spin-offs bespoke to Nintendo hardware. We don't even get ports of old Mana games released on older systems the same way we get Tales of games ported. So I won't get excited for this.
Absolutely wonderful. Loved the remake.
If it plays anything like Trials, then I'm down. The Mana games have always had a cool vibe, but the battle system on Trials hit the sweet spot for me - the timing, the feedback and super-moves...Say what you want about the graphics or story or whatever, but the battle system is so good that I didn't even get burned out on grinding.
I'm not buying Legend of Mana yet, because I still have the PS version sitting with only two or three hours put in. I will eventually get it, and whatever Mana they put out....there's just nothing else quite like those games.
I won't get my hopes up. The last new games in the series (DS IIRC) were pretty useless.
I love that the Mana series is going through a resurgence, and I especially love having so many of the games on the Switch. I really hope they go back and release the Secret of Mana remake for the Switch as well.
@Chocobo_Shepherd Which "Mana 4"?
Dawn of Mana for the PS2 (which was officially "Seiken Densetsu 4" in Japan, I think)?
I remember excitedly buying it upon release, then finding out it didn't seem like it was going to be an RPG at all.
Just some 3D action game, no RPG.
@KingMike yup. that's the game I was thinking of!
The only Mana game I enjoyed playing was Secret of Mana. Actually, it was the first RPG I ever played. Looking forward to a new entry. But I hope they avoid the episodic approach of both Legends and Even Trials. Just give me a sweet linear classic Jrpg experience.
@JSDude1 Same here, it is very weird why they avoid doing anything with Chrono series. They avoid it like plague.
I know they will keep it 3D like Trials, but somehow a brand new Mana game with HD-2D would be just... incredible.
I felt like the Mana series lost its way for a time. Trials of Mana was a good return to form.
Secret of Mana still captures the pinnacle of what the series should be like.
Collection of Mana and Trials of Mana Remake on Switch was awesome! Can't wait for Legend of Mana (physical) on Switch and I'm really excited a new game is in the works. Great times to be a Seiken Densetsu fan.
"Square Enix Confirms The Next Mana Game For Console Is Now In Development"
... and is NOT coming to the Nintendo Switch.
@CorvoRevo Would be the lamest choice Square Enix will ever make not bringing a Japanese beloved series to a Japanese platform. Their last game (Dawn of Mana) that went Sony exclusive flopped horribly.
@mjhopkins81 with you 100 percent. although I will say, Seiken Densetsu 3 is incredible too. Last one I really enjoyed
@KingMike It truly was a terrible game, openly reviled by fans and reviewers, alike. It didn't even succeed as an Action RPG. And having to start over, stats-wise/weapons-wise, at every level was just a waste of time.
@Chocobo_Shepherd Agreed. They really need to take another stab at that, because, I'll be honest, the original SOM, while I do have a soft spot for it, wasn't really that great. They had a golden opportunity to fix every single problem with the remake, and while the story feels more complete and the screen-scroll thing was fixed, everything else is just as clunky as it was before. (Not to mention the soundtrack is a huge mixed bag, making me beyond grateful for the classic option) I'd like to see them tell the story they were obviously initially going to tell before the company forced them to release it as soon as possible, all the plot points they were forced to remove, all the dialog they had to leave out that could have made the conversations feel so much more natural as opposed to, you know, awkward.
With all the remakes and remasters coming out, I was hoping for an announcement like this. (And who knows? Maybe more dead franchises will get the Crash Bandicoot treatment) I just hope this is more like Trials of Mana (Either version) and not another Heroes/Dawn. (Even Children of Mana was okay at best)
