Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope was one of the highlights of this year's E3, offering a gorgeous splash of colour and comedy to liven up Ubisoft's show and giving fans of the original game something to look forward to as we hurtle towards 2022.
The footage we saw during the event looked particularly lavish, with some very pretty character models and intriguing new gameplay elements – it looked like we might be about to get our hands on much more ambitious sequel, and it turns out that that's exactly the case.
In an interview with Multiplayer.it (Italian), Sparks of Hope creative director Davide Soliani and producer Cristina Nava spoke about what we can expect to see in the new game. Interestingly, the conversation revealed that to meet the sequel's "much bigger ambitions," the original Mario + Rabbids team of just over 100 people has now tripled in size.
The interview also touched upon Sparks of Hope's new camera system and world design. Nava says, "The worlds are no longer a corridor like the exploration parts were in Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle between battles. It’s not an open world, this we would like to point out, however within each planet you will be able to move more freely." (Thanks, VGC).
Elsewhere, Soliani teased that the team has been listening to the Mario + Rabbids community, and that "some of the things they’ve asked for that we’ve been collecting and discussing since we released the game in 2017 have become a reality" in the sequel. He stops short of sharing what these might be, but it sounds like fans are in for a real treat.
Are you looking forward to playing the new Mario + Rabbids when it launches next year? Let us know with a comment.

Hopefully none of those poor additional employee's are subject to the horrors of Ubisofts leadership and are allowed to just work on the game.
What if a gaming company would actually bring the release date of a game forward.
‘Yeah, we said 2022, but actually, it’ll be here next week.’
Please do that with this game, Ubi and Nintendo! Inject it into my Switch. Asap!
“Some” of the things. Definitely not Daisy lol.
I recently got back into the first one after the announcement. Gotta finally finish all those extra challenges and unlock everything. One of the biggest surprises on switch that nobody thought would be good. Definitely a hidden gem in the library!
@iuli please don’t! The rabbids are an integral part of the success! Gotta love dem rabbids!
It's still Ubisoft so I'm cautious.
But it does look great, makes me want to replay the original.
"Not an ope world" is actually putting one of my worries to rest. I mostly have faith in it, given how great the original was, but then again, that could also have been said when I just played Rainbow Six Rogue Spear or Raven Shield and heard they made a new one...
@Shambo Rogue Spear is the bee's knees.

That's great, wish Nintendo's Animal Crossing team would do the same!
Well, we do know not locking down the team to always require Mario + a Rabbids is a noted change based on fan feedback. Which is good since the first game made it impossible to use mushroom kingdom characters in several pairings. More interesting exploration sequences sound like another big one.
I wonder what else he might be referring to...?
@link3710
Yeah I totally forgot about that. The other day I was playing and tried to create a team of Mario, Luigi and peach but it wouldn't let me. You have to put at least one rabbid character in your group. I was like seriously? I hope that is an option this time.
@Zeldafan79 It was already confirmed they removed those restrictions, yup!
this was the stand out reveal for me! So excited for this and really looking forward to the new dynamics they have in store.
Cannot wait for this awesome game to come out.
Rabbid luigi. Vamp
This is exactly the news I was hoping for!
@1UP_MARIO yes!!!!!!! The vamp ability was the most fun piece of the last title!!!
Huh, I'm honestly surprised it isn't an open world.
Which is a good thing, as that should allow for a less bloated gameplay experience.
@Donutsavant He was by far my favourite character in the game.
This game will be great, I'm sure of it. High hopes!
Interesting. Could also because they are developing it for two consoles😋
Best game on the Switch, apart from ........
I wanted so badly to enjoy the first game enough to be hyped about this but the issue is, In my opinion at least, Into The Breach basically too this grid box strategy formula and perfected it to the point that any game after it just feels dated.
More people isn't always a good thing. Hopefully the larger staff doesn't result in the game being pulled in too many different directions.
The first game is great, but I felt like it lacked much replayability. More characters and build options would help. Being able to replay missions with different characters would be cool.
@Heavyarms55 exactly my thinking. Too many chefs ruin the food.
For the second part of your comment: a skirmish mode were you can freely adjust the rules for each level would be cool, just like in old strategy games like C&C.
@XenoShaun I even still play the GBA version of it today. And recently got "Doorkickers" on Switch (not "Doorkickers Action Squad"), and where the GBA version of Rogue Spear was a great top down tactical action approach that still baffles me today in its quality, Doorkickers is the entire planning phase missing from the GBA version, as its own game. A real recommendation, so much so that I almost went looking for Ding Chavez among the character roster.
Meanwhile GameFreak with their team of 20 people split in 2 most of the time...
Bodes well, considering the original is one of the best exclusives on the system.
@mazzel There's a neat idea too.
Great news! Ubisoft has never ever ever had a problem with having too many cooks in the kitchen.
@westman98 You think an Ubisoft open world would make the game LESS bloated!?
@Spiders
Not having a Ubisoft open-world should make the game less bloated.
So very excited for this. One of the rare sequels that I feel very confident about it’s release. Take your time, Ubisoft! I am waiting patiently for its release ❤️
Okay seriously, i am HYPED about this one. And tue fact i saw running/fighting freely together with the RPG elements, got me even more hyped. I would love to see more of marios power attacks outside of a gun.
All I want is an option to just play the battles - I found wandering around and the puzzles rather pointless; happy for them to be in the game for those that enjoyed those bits, but a one button ‘skip to next battle’ would be magic
I've always thought of the original Mario + Rabbids as 'AA' by Ubisoft standards. This hints it's closer to its ''AAA' ambitions
