The team at thatgamecompany is renowned by many console players for PlayStation titles like Flower and Journey, but since setting out on their own they've been making a mark on smart devices with Sky: Children of the Light. It's now available to download on the Switch eShop, and it's free-to-play with a decent amount of content to get you started at no cost.
The Switch version includes a "free main story arc and offers up the ability for eight players to explore and play socially at any one time", though as it's free-to-play there are paid options for more content. For Switch owners there'll be a Starter Pack at £28.99 (with regional variations), which includes "two new capes, a vessel flute, new hairstyle, 75 candles and an extra surprise". Pleasingly, whether you're planning to just try out the free content or pay for more there'll be cross-play with Apple and Android players; mobile players will also be able to carry progress across to the Switch port.
It's pitched very much as a friendly co-operative game, as outlined in the PR excerpt below.
Originally launched in July 2019 on iOS and in April 2020 on Android, players arrive in Sky as a child of light to unravel mysteries of the desolate kingdom, and return the fallen stars back to their constellations. Players can explore seven dreamlike realms with like-minded friends, where they can fly, hold hands and collaborate together around the world. With compassion, friendship and altruism as central elements of Sky, the game’s innovative experience has drawn both critical acclaim and awards. Since its debut, the game has been honored with Apple’s 2019 iPhone Game of the Year and Apple’s 2020 Design Award, as well as wins at the SXSW Awards 2020, the Game Developers Choice Awards 2020, The Webby Awards 2020 and 2021, Google Play Store’s Best Indie Games of 2020 as well as other awards.
The next 'season' starts on 6th July and will have a tie-in with Le Petit Prince (The Little Prince), which will have story set in a new “Starlight Desert” area.
We certainly plan to give it a try for free, let us know if you're tempted to give it a whirl.

Downloading now. Very excited for this one.
I don't know to much about this game but I do remember it, Downloading now.
I’d like to get Journey to the switch please
@Friendly I was just about to say that.
@Snatcher @Friendly Flower with gyro too please.
@XenoShaun Oh I played a demo for that game, It was really calming, and I just wished I was just, wind......Wind....
Journey is one of the best gaming experiences I’ve had in my life, so I’ll definitely check it out.
Meh will give it a go but Journey is the most overrated and dull game in existence so not holding out much hope
What was that wind game on wiiware, bring that back..
@ThroughTheIris56 IKR, People saying it was overrated and ya thats opinion, But in my opinion its underrated, you hear no one talk about that game.
This is a brilliant game
Very confused at the expensive dlc for this?
@DeclanS98 I think in this game you give out candles, so you have to pay for these.
@Snatcher
I think it's still a fairly iconic game. It straddles the line between walking simulator and puzzle-platformer, and was well-positioned, in the early 2010s, to take advantage of the changing videogame conversation of the time, with the rise of indies and a growing acceptance, across the wider culture, of videogames as an artform. (Coincidentally, the Smithsonian's landmark The Art of Videogames exhibition opened in March 2012, when Journey came out.) So it has a definite place in videogame history.
@Beaucine And I don't disagree whatsoever, I just don't know why Some people would see the game as overrated even tho nobody talks about it?
@Snatcher
I mean, the game's almost a decade old by now. And it was talked about a lot back in the day. It was a poster child for both indie gaming and games as art. So I guess those calling it "overrated" are thinking back to the mid-2010s.
I think "overrated" is one of the most useless words in existence, though. Along with "dated." But that's another conversation.
@DeclanS98 if it’s like the mobile version, it’s for season passes that unlock the ability to buy extra clothes and expressions during whatever event is going on that the time (they last several weeks). You can still buy other outfits and stuff for the season, you just don’t have access to everything... And if you just want to wait, those items eventually loop around and are made available again later for non-seasonal currency. It’s really just a way to support the developers/get some cosmetic items faster.
Edit: your comment above the one I replied to makes me think maybe you’ve already played, but I’ll leave this up anyway in case anyone else is wondering.
@Beaucine True, True, I do think tho that the word overrated can be a good word if used right, I don't think it sure be used for something you just outright dislike.
@NinChocolate Lost Winds. I think it's on Steam and mobile. But the sequel, Lost Winds: Winter of the Melodias, is still WiiWare exclusive.
@StardusterEX No that’s exactly the info I was after! Thank you mate!
@DeclanS98 No problem!
Loving it so far and have been waiting for this for years. YEARS. Its so engaging and feels like a genuine adventure. Feels very much at home on the Switch. And while it could be a bit better at certain aspects, its still 100% worth the free download. Stunning game in every way.
Not interested in this at all, unless there's a demo for me to try first.
@Coldheat64 Its a free to play game. Why in the world would you need a demo????
Really enjoying the atmosphere of this game. And the music is soothing. Will put some time into it later this week.
I was going to download it, but as someone who constantly whines about preservation, I simply can't gather up the willpower to play when it's online only.
@Friendly so would I! I like the game so much I’ve been tempted to get a second hand PS just for it. I’ve played it a bit on iPad but, meh, I just don’t like playing games on touch screens (or non nintendo devices lol)
"It's now available to download on the Switch eShop,…"
Hmm maybe I should take a look…
"…and it's free-to-play -"
…no.
The headline is somewhat misleading.
For someone who is not familiar with the game can someone explain how the game works ? Can you play the entire game without buying any DLC ? Is the DLC purely cosmetic, or do you need to buy it after a while to progress in the game.
I tried this on mobile but fell off pretty quickly. Hopefully give this another shot
Looks like I will be going solo on this game.....but with the extra I'll download and wait for a Physical release with the goodies included.
