New first-party Switch games routinely deliver strong debut sales in recent times, thanks to the popularity of the system and the never-ending demand for fresh first-party efforts; Mario Golf: Super Rush is no different, claiming top spot in its Japanese chart debut having also done the same in the UK.
In its first week - according to Famitsu's figures - it sold 80,430 retail copies, making it the comfortable winner despite some competition from other new releases. A few key releases across PS4 and PS5 break up the Switch monopoly of the top 10, with the Nintendo hybrid's version of Samurai Warriors 5 being outperformed by the PS4 equivalent.
Here are the top ten (first numbers are this week's estimated sales, followed by total sales):
- [NSW] Mario Golf: Super Rush (Nintendo, 06/25/21) – 80,430 (New)
- [PS4] Samurai Warriors 5 (Koei Tecmo, 06/24/21) – 55,675 (New)
- [NSW] Samurai Warriors 5 (Koei Tecmo, 06/24/21) – 38,691 (New)
- [NSW] Game Builder Garage (Nintendo, 06/11/21) – 23,280 (126,008)
- [PS4] Scarlet Nexus (Bandai Namco, 06/24/21) – 20,160 (New)
- [NSW] Ring Fit Adventure (Nintendo, 10/18/19) – 13,756 (2,654,669)
- [NSW] Minecraft (Microsoft, 06/21/18) – 11,888 (2,019,432)
- [PS4] The Legend of Nayuta: Boundless Trails (Falcom, 06/24/21) – 11,230 (New)
- [PS5] Scarlet Nexus (Bandai Namco, 06/24/21) – 11,008 (New)
- [NSW] The Caligula Effect 2 (FuRyu, 06/24/21) – 10,243 (New)
Moving on to hardware, the Switch is still comfortably leading the way; this is especially the case as PS5 and Xbox Series hardware continue to face extensive stock issues, which will be harming Sony's system in particular. We're not sure why the Switch Lite is listed ahead of PS5 despite shifting fewer units, but that is the way it's been posted by Famitsu.
- Switch – 58,864 (16,424,721)
- Switch Lite – 14,087 (3,917,110)
- PlayStation 5 – 20,031 (718,451)
- PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – 3,407 (140,132)
- Xbox Series X – 2,672 (41,998)
- PlayStation 4 – 2,548 (7,795,350)
- Xbox Series S – 1,441 (14,626)
- New 2DS LL (including 2DS) – 519 (1,166,619)

Woah. Over 2k units sold of the Xbox Series X is that normal in recent times?
Looks like XBox is getting a bit of a cult following over there lol.
How is Mario Golf number 1? Didn't they read all the arguments in the comment section of the review here last week? 🤣
@WiltonRoots,
Nah, they were far too busy getting on with their lives , then playing the odd video game now and again, but Like I say Mario Golf is a great little game, and deserves it's success.
@johnvboy Japan is a golfing nation too. How have you been getting on with it? Might get it this weekend.
That's an eagle.
Those Xbox sales are quite impressive, all things considered.
i am so happy for mario golf. nintendo is still king of japan. i think x box having such a good e3 helped them in japan. with halo and forza and psyconauts 2. they are showing that the big games are coming. now if we could only get more info on fable and perfect dark.
@WiltonRoots Do not start again young man! We’ve had a quiet week so far! LoL
@WiltonRoots 🤣 Oh, Wilton.
@WiltonRoots,
Pretty good, been playing mostly with the controller, but have had a go at the motion controls, which are pretty good to, it just takes a while to get used to them.
If you buy it, we will have to set up an online match.
@WolfyTn,
But if we did not have a Mario Golf comment section ending in arguments, where would all the fun be?.
Mario golf is brilliant.
@johnvboy I’ve also toyed with the motion controls.. they’re -meh-.. still loving the game on my big screen regardless
@1UP_MARIO i agree. the game is really fun .cannot wait for the cool dlc.
Looks like everyone in Japan finally has Mario Kart on the Switch…. Let’s hope the rest of the world follows their lead.
@tntswitchfan68 same. Adventure mode has been challenging
@Meteoroid Price drop?
Mario Golf launch / LTD sales:
> Mario Golf N64: 126,108 / 470,778
> Mario Golf GBC: 92,760 / 219,830
> Toadstool Tour: 63,263 / 192,802
> Advance Tour: 28,581 / 88,904
> World Tour: 58,743 / 134,782
> Super Rush: 80,430 / ???
Super Rush is either the biggest or 2nd biggest launch in the series after digital sales are accounted for.
Personally, I'm surprised Mario Golf N64 sold as much as it, especially compared to all its follow-ups. Must have been the novelty of a high profile Mario golf spin-off.
Approximately 1 in 75 Japanese Switch owners bought Mario Golf this last week.
In proportion this seems low.
@1UP_MARIO. I know but boy is it fun.
@WolfyTn I know I know...sometimes I can't control my mischievous side...
@WolfyTn,
They take a bit of getting used to, and judging the shot power is a bit tough at first, but if you stick with it it's quite rewarding.
Interesting that Scarlet Nexus sold about twice as much on PS4 compared to PS5 but in the UK the PS4 was about 1/3 of the PS5 sales.
@WiltonRoots,
You are a little tinker Wilton, riling all these very level headed people up.
@rockodoodle
You are lying to yourself if you think Mario Kart 8 DX is anywhere close to done selling.
Not charting in the Top 10 != Everyone has bought it
@johnvboy I’m still stuck on how to use backspin or forward spin.. someone said that when you go to hit the ball just tilt the controller down or up but I don’t think I see the difference
Ring Fit Adventure is still slaying it. If they don’t make some DLC for this they’re missing the boat.
@Octane Mario Tennis Aces has been discounted a few times, I would be surprised if Nintendo didn't follow suit with Super Rush. Sure, those discounts aren't as steep as something from MS, Sony, or most third-parties, but they are still discounts from the MSRP.
Amazon dropped this to $50...and I bit...looking forward to the constant updates
@WolfyTn,
Not got that deep into the motion controls as yet, will give it a go later.
@HotGoomba,
Good job it's not an illegal, that's a sick bird you know.
Who wanna bet that by next week a majority of those new titles on the chart (other than the Nintendo one and Minecraft) will be gone from the top 10?
Strong week for PlayStation and Xbox.
I’m not sure Metroid and Pokemon remakes can save Xmas for Nintendo.
Sadly I see PlayStation beating Nintendo this Xmas.
@Lord
PlayStation will outsell Nintendo in their dreams, especially for Japan.
Congratulations Nintendo 👏
