@johnvboy Nintendo knows, by the amount of subscriptions already taken out. It will either be above or below their expectations.
I judge on 'value for money' rather than cost and although for me it's affordable, it's not good value. Some folks will have a 'must have' mentality and will pay whatever the price just to have something. They are Nintendo's best customer's.
I guess Nintendo can charge what they like and the gamers can just refuse to purchase the expansion pack.
But if enough people moan about the price and still pay the asking price then Nintendo may just settle for less subscribers.
I won't pay the price, but if I did, my weekly game playing time would not increase, so I'd buy less games, maybe one less full priced Nintendo game a year.
I agree. But sometimes once a game like that has been played it's not always wise to return to it years later. Leave it in your memory, it's almost always never the same.
Never played a Mario Party game, always thought I should, this seems a good place to start.
I prefer single player games, I left physical board games behind years ago in favour of video games, so not sure if this works as a single player game.
It looks like two completely different companies....
The one who delayed the release date from December to Spring for Advance Wars to make some small adjustments to the game, and the company responsible for allowing these broken N64 titles onto
gamers.
Nintendo did say that the Switch was not a replacement for the Wii u. But it was, as we now know.
Nintendo have a habit of introducing a console that is not very future proof, within a couple of years fans wanted more, especially when the 3ds days were numbered.
We are left with three Handheld console variants including the improved Oled, but an outdated home console.
That said the answer may be hidden in the Oled itself, or a new console next year, maybe not a Nintendo console though.
For someone who only holidays in Disney World, (ok Orlando) I should be a prime target for KH games and maybe I am, but just haven't played any. Other than a demo on or two.
But wanting to play old games and playing them are not the same. I am having this conflict with the Castlevania games. When all said and done they are old games.
This happens a lot with Nintendo, games get the big reveal making the Direct that showed the game that bit more fun and exciting; then before the release date, it's pulled, and a weak reason like 'it needs a little more time for fine tuning' is given.
What other reason is there? Maybe it's a weak title for a near Christmas release or Nintendo are going to announce another game because the Christmas Christmas titles this year are at best avarage.
This game was something I would have bought because of the weak line up of games, but there are some stronger Spring titles on the way and Advance Wars has now got competition, so I may now give it a miss.
I think Metro Dread being a 2d game with roots in handheld consoles comes across as another handheld game, which it is. It could have been designed as a launch title for the Oled, which it might have been. A stop gap while most Metroid fans wait for 4, the true big screen 3d Metroid.
I don't know if it will achieve great sales or meet expected sales. I can take or leave it, I've played a couple of past games in the franchise and I guess if the price was right I may have purchased it, as it was I went for a different game when I bought my Oled.
It has the look of a 2d game but an over priced 2d game. Because it's on the Switch it can be passed off as a top AAA Switch game rather than maybe just a top AA game.
It NL asked me to write an article on the above topic I could make a good argument for either side.
The family pack is Nintendo selling the pack to me and me renting it out to up to seven others. I could even make a bit of a profit.
If I used all that is on offer in the single pack, I guess I would get my money's worth.
But I don't play online, or AC, but would be interested in playing a few N64 games, but the price while affordable is not good value for money. I object to paying over the odds, just to boost Nintendo shares.
But... I could justify the cost. Let's say I play 14 games a year and decided to have next year as a retro year and play 14 N64 games that works out at £2.50 a game. See where I'm going with this. Add up what I would have paid for games normally and I'm saving, I win.
As it is I get to keep my money and the £35 will be saved.
If you have a vested interest in something you will tend to look at it more favourably. As does NL with Nintendo. Nothing wrong with that, but there's usually two sides to a coin.
You could well be describing the Wii U and the 3ds. Combining the two consoles to create a hybrid machine that meets in the middle, and Switches. But the trade off is what's missing at either end.
TV play is not so good on the Switch, for many games and the Lite is not as compact or pocketable as the 3ds. A better higher spec Wii U and an updated 3ds/2ds would have had more benefits than the Switch.
The Oled does make a difference when playing some games and if rumours are true that 4k is hidden somewhere in the there, that will help with the TV side of things. But the Lite is going to have a good bit of competition in the not so distant future and the 3ds would have been better placed to see them off.
There maybe costs, but that does not justify me having to pay for Animal Crossing DLC when I don't own or play or AC.
I'd be happy to pay a small monthly payment to play some N64 games, but thats it.
I have read and been told by gamers that the Switch AC game is low on content and does not have the longevity of previous AC games. We're gamers sold short with the game?
@electrolite77 THE QUESTION ASKED again I repete, 'your impression of the OLED launch last week - do you think it's off to a strong start? Let us know in the comments.'
Did you enjoy your trip to Disney World, what are your impressions? Your take on what you thought of Disney.
People's impressions will differ depending on their experience. Someone who didn't get an Oled on release day because they were all sold out won't be as happy a bunny as someone who got one. Individual impressions.
Not a spreadsheet of sales figures that is not necessarily accurate.
Example this Switch launch sold more units than X console at launch. 70% of Switches sold this time were Oleds.
You would expect the Oled to sell more, the Oled was on preorder for a couple of months and all the sales were accumulated into one week.
@electrolite77 all you are doing is iterating the same thing, the information you got third hand from the internet.
I followed the stores list posted here on NL showing the availability of Switch Oleds for pre-order. The Stores that were listed used up their preorder allocation within days. It was weeks before these shops were showing that they had a second wave of preorder allocations. These also sold out leaving most shops without Oleds to sell.
As I said previously, I have replied to this topic question, about my impression of the OLED launch. This I did. You may not agree but it's my impression. Whereas you are just repeating figures NL printed, and not giving your impression of the launch.
Since we don't know what Nintendo class as a successful UK oled launch my impressions are just as valid as yours.
My thoughts are Nintendo will view the launch as good since most or all the launch stock has been sold.
For them to miss judge the demand leaving gamers disappointed may not be so good. Unless it was planned to be a limited stock launch for reasons mentioned in previous post.
I don't follow sales figures, I just reading what you have posted.
The second and market will consist of all the Oled owners who sell their old Switch. Let's say conservatively that is only 20%, Nintendo would have to sell 40% more stock to arrive at a 20% increase. So it is figures a company would have to factor into its sale projection.
The White version. Which does look ok in handheld mode, but when docked, the white dock looks out of place on my black TV stand with my black TV and satellite box.
@westman98 sadly prevents him from sharing such data.
Well in that case that data has to be excluded, for now as it's only hearsay.
Nintendo know that there will be many second hand Switches flooding the market in a week or two, all selling for less that the discounted normal Switch. So for Nintendo these consoles will affect their sales figures.
The best way to stop this unwanted flood of second handed Switches hitting markets at once is to space out the arrival of the Oleds.
So I guess Nintendo are not looking for big sales of the Oled just yet (big being subjective). The more Oleds sold the more second hand Switches there are for sale and the less the Original Switch will sell; not good this time of the year.
@electrolite77 you may not have read this topics question which was....
....'What's your impression of the OLED launch last week - do you think it's off to a strong start? Let us know in the comments!'
My answer was No. With reasons. You are giving unsubstantiated figures as evidence that the Oled is off to a strong start.
Since stock was limited and rationed, that suggested Nintendo sold what it expected to sell and no more. That in its self is subjective because we don't know how many units were sold. Was the stock limited to suggest a high demand for the product, or did Nintendo just not have enough Oleds ready in time.
Amazon was out of regular stock this morning, and only a few units starting at £388.00. I guess from private sellers.
It's not the first time Nintendo has not meet its pre order sales.
@westman98
@electrolite77
games industry.biz is your preferred analyst with numbers, stats, and data for how well the Oled is selling, and you are happy to put your faith in stats, knowing how easy it is to play with numbers. And these numbers don't even give amounts of sales, only percentages, which without original sales figures are meaningless.
I believe the sales person who told me that the Oled preorders were limited because the console was rationed.
No I don't think is was a good start. For example my local Game store told me they were expecting 10 units to meet pre orders but we're only given one unit.
So pre-orders seemed limited, maybe to create a false demand, or maybe to create a demand.
@ivory_soul you don't seen to grasp profit and loss against market force.
If the coffee shop across the street from yours attracts more customers, there is most likely a reason. If you try and mitigate your losses by increasing your prices you will just go out of business quicker.
You may pay the asking price for video games because your desire to have that game out weights the cost, and that's fine. But I'm sure you don't apply this logic to other purchases you make.
I put value for money above cost. I'm sure you have done the same with other games.
And also a digital game costs much more than other media so there is much more $$ to loose if the game turns out to be duff.
At least the developer should have more faith in their games and allow a demo for those who are unsure, not about the cost, but the value for money.
There is nothing wrong with being broke, as you say, as long as you haven't got there by investing all your spare cash in digital games.
@ivory_soul I will compare a book a movie and a game, from the customers point of view.
A paperback book has a price printed on the back cover and it sell at that price (although some supermarkets will discount it). The authors fee is built into the price and the publisher takes a risk that the book sales more than the break even price. If it sells million it will be because it's a good book, well publicised and recommended to friends etc. Most publishers will make a tidy enough profit to carry on with the authors next book. Some will show a loss, that's business.
Same with cinema tickets, the price of a ticket remains much the same whatever film is showing, but the more bums on seats the movie attracts, the more profit is made.
So why should a video game be any different?
If I apply your reasoning, say with BotW2. We know that it will be a very big seller, selling millions of copies, so developing costs will be more than covered by sales, so there is no reason why BotW2 should cost any more than the price of and other Nintendo AAA release, but it might do and that would be considered 'cash grabbing'.
For what is a rather simple Tetris game the price is high. Is that because the development costs are unusually high or they are not expecting high sales and want to cover costs or is it cash grabbing or just poor marketing.
My guess is cash grabbing. That is what many publishers are using the Switch for.
@ivory_soul there is a difference between selling to cheaply, over priced (cash grab) and reasonable. What is a reasonable markup price for a video game, dvd, book cinema ticket etc?
I look for value for money, and even a good deal and tend to buy physical where I can.
This version of Tetris seems over priced for what it is and because it's not physical there is no resale value. And they haven't offered a demo version so we can test before we buy.
As I said above this is for real Tetris fans who know they will get their money's worth and not as some reviewers think when scoring it a 10. The reviewers play it for the review enjoy it, score it and move on. It's a bit of fun for a while, but an expensive bit of fun if you are only a casual player.
By offering it now at a more reasonable price they would sell more and get a bigger profit. Six months from now it will be just another almost forgotten game in a sale with hundreds of others.
Tetris effect does look interesting but a launch price of £27 (including a 25% launch discount) does seem overpriced for what it is. The reviewer seemed to get carried away with his score.
There are so many Tetris games out there, many free, you have to be a die hard Tetris fan to invest in this one.
But like so many eshop games at launch, the price is wrong and it will be heavily discounted in the coming months when it's all but forgotten.
But if it launched at £9.99 I would have bought it straight after reading the review. And so would would hundreds of others. Most likely selling 4 or 5 times the amount of copies. So a much larger profit from day one.

This will happen to coincide with BotW 2.
Sorted.

Replaced it with a Samsung because they offered a warranty for burn with their TV's.
I don't think they fixed the burn issue, but so that sales weren't affected it would be cheaper for them to replace a TV with burn, than loose sales.
Re: Review: Tetris Effect: Connected - Mizuguchi's Masterpiece Finds Its Ideal Platform
Re: Review: Tetris Effect: Connected - Mizuguchi's Masterpiece Finds Its Ideal Platform
Re: Random: Did You Know The Switch OLED Model Includes A "Softer" HDMI Cable?
Not a lotta people know that .....
Re: Soapbox: We Need To Talk About The One Thing Nintendo Got Wrong With The Switch OLED
@invictus4000 that's what I was thinking of doing.
Tip: a small sharp chisel, place where you want the notch and with a small mallet, whack the chisel a few times. Job done.
Re: Soapbox: We Need To Talk About The One Thing Nintendo Got Wrong With The Switch OLED
Sounds like a deal breaker. I'll wait for a patch to fix it.
Re: Round Up: The Metroid Dread Reviews Are In
Time will tell if 10/10 is a knee jerk reaction or just a reviewer that was a bit over hyped.
