One of the highlights for speed demons during Nintendo's E3 Direct earlier this week was the announcement the arcade title Cruis'n Blast would be coming across to the Switch.
It's arriving this Fall, but one question that remains is will it be receiving a physical release? Yes, according to developer Raw Thrills, and it'll be released later this year. Here's the official word via social media, along with a look at the game's action-packed box art:
Cruis'n Blast first popped up earlier this year, when a rating was filed by the Australian Classification Board on 19th May. And if you didn't know, this high-speed arcade racer stems from the Cruis'n series - which originally started out in arcades in '94 with Cruis'n USA, and followed with a home console release on Nintendo 64 in 1996.
Will you be taking a ride with this game when it speeds onto the Switch this Fall? Tell us down below.
Truthfully it was one of the best moments of the Direct for me!
Mario Kart Arcade GP should be ported to Nintendo Switch too if this racing game can have physical release on Nintendo Switch.
We desperately need more of these awesome 90s and 00s-era racing coin-ops and their catchy soundtracks to get ported to Switch. Sega has a ton of them, many of which have never seen a home console release, but a faithful port of titles like Hydro Thunder and San Francisco Rush would be welcomed with open arms as well.
Is there only 5 tracks? Or is it 5 locations with track variants? I’m buying it anyway. I just want to know exactly what I’m getting
Would prefer to see H20verdrive.
That's amazing, I'm so hyped for this. I played this in the arcades and it's really good, so I'm glad that I don't have to pay $10K to play it in my home.
I do find it strange that Nintendo isn't making the physical copy though. Don't they own the Cruis'n brand? Raw Thrills is just licensing it from Nintendo. So I'm sure that Nintendo might be ok with distributing the game or making it in their factories.
Eh I'm fine either way.
Those dates in the article are very wrong.
Cruis'n USA arcade was released in 1994, hyped as a demo of the "Ultra 64" hardware.
The N64 port was near-launch game, in 1996.
I'll definitely be picking this up day 1. I have so much nostalgia playing Cruis'n USA/World/Exotica on Nintendo 64 as a youth.
Hopefully this game supports local wireless play so I can double dip!
I'm very happy Nintendo isn't publishing it despite being their own series, because it probably will have discounts!
This seems like a port very strictly made due to COVID. I’d imagine Raw Thrills had to look towrds other avenues of revenue.
The entire song consists of 5 words...well I guess it's still better then Sega's Daytona USA
@hakjie11 Erm, NO!
DUSA is a CLASSIC BEAST of a song.
yes. yes. This game is going to rock. i loved cruisin usa and this game is going to be right up my alley. I love arcade racers and this looks to be one of the best.
@KingMike Facts.. they need to learn thier history
Man, we don't get games like this much anymore, so it's great to see this coming back on the Switch.
I'll definitely buy the physical just to show I appreciate these types of games too.
This is great news.
I will pick it up.
I was hoping for another racer to be announced, I think it starts with an F.....shame as there is Zero chance of that happening.
@Realness I counted 24 tracks in the trailer. Who knows, maybe they'll make some more as DLC for the Switch release as well.
@Nin10dood Hell, we didn't even get anything Mario Kart related. I thought there was a good chance there would be new DLC for 8 or the long overdue Mario Kart 9, but nope.. This game was the saving grace for fans of silly, unrealistic arcade racers like myself.
An individual of impeccable taste.
Sons of Angels shortened attract mode arrangement is 90 seconds of pure solid gold sounding like a B-Side from Whitesnake circa 1991.
This game looks great! Will definitely be picking this up
Got this on pre-order already from Base let's hope it sells enough so more arcade racers from the past get ported so many great arcade racers would be a great addition to switch library keeping fingers crossed.
A must buy for me. Looks great. Had the old ones on the n64 back in the day.
It looks so nice!
I remember playing a lot with my friends.
Certainly day one and I hope it will sell well enough so that Nintendo can bring back more dormant IPs.
Well, I’ve never played this series before. In fact, I’d never heard of it, but it has gained my attention
There's a decent version in most arcades atm you can try out. Was playing it a bit then I found an old Sega rally machine in good nick with CRTs and everything. Sorry cruis'n! Game over...
I remember owning USA and World as a kid and have fond memories.
Seems like a game that will be in the bargain bin and I'll definitely pick it up when that happens.
@Realness by the info on the trailer it seems that we are going to have about 29 tracks and in those tracks it will be included the 5 from the original Arcade release.
@Realness No, there are 29 tracks! The arcade version had only 5.
Shame no online play though...
Not heard of this before now but it looks good. Something I'd buy, if reviews are good.
One of the highlights of the Nintendo Direct for me
Day 1 let’s hope they do a UK physical release! And not just USA
1 copy sold already 🤗
Very happy about this. As someone who loves arcade games and is disappointed by the lack of modern arcade games in my area, it’s great to see a more recent 2017 release and an awesome Cruis’n upgrade at that. Really nice to see this getting the physical treatment too.
I was never really into the Cruisin' series, but this looks great. Huge jumps, collectables and zanyness. My kind of racer
Is this a first party game?
If it is would this mean we won't see the "Nintendo Kart" game Nate The Hate has talked about? He thought that could be an alternative racing game pre MK9.
If Katy Perry likes it then I will.
@iuli Those arcade Mario Kart GP games look very last two gens so it's okay if those are arcade exclusives. It's rare to see Nintendo port an arcade game to console in 2021 so I'm glad we got something from that plus a few track contents thrown in and with a physical release in the planning.
@noobish_hat Well it's not a limited release, not a collector's edition, not an anniversary game, and not a region's exclusive so I had to say it's probably just a normal retail physical release. You should be able to find it in store shelves with no prob.
Looking forward to this
@MarioBrickLayer It's a third party game but a Nintendo franchise. Basically Nintendo loaned out the license to a third party publisher like SEGA did with Streets of Rage, Panzer Dragoon and other games.
Can’t wait to get this, we need more arcade racers!
All those hours spent playing Cruis'n Exotica back in the day is gonna pay off, shame it doesn't have online racing though.
I love arcade racers. So I will pay basically anything for this. But a standard Nintendo full price will still seem excessive for how much content is in here. But that’s a 300+ comment debate.
Can’t wait to play this title.
F Zero fans what u think
@Clyde_Radcliffe I wonder if it does well, would Nintendo ask them to make another? If they aren't going to restart the F-Zero franchise, this could be their second racing game?
I hope it's a good game, if only the original was included as an extra...
But with a physical and not limited release they got my attention.
This is great news!
This one really got me excited. i can't wait to play it
Fingers crossed the game is better than the music on that video!! Looks a real blast and day one for me, bring it on!!
Hell yeah! Glad to hear this...now we just need more info, like a release date and where we can preorder
@MarioBrickLayer Maybe! I really want a new Wave Race though. Nintendo have so many dead racing franchises... Kirby Air Ride was another.
@Realness 23 vehicles and 29 tracks
Did you watch the actual trailer? There's 29 tracks in the Switch release. It was the original arcade version that had 5.
They increased the number of tracks by 6x which is nuts!
This game looks like it could either be really good or really bad. I'll be waiting for some reviews before I decide on my purchase.
This and Metroid Dread were the highlights of the direct for me. Hopefully this will sell like crazy and Nintendo will green light more of their racing IPs.
@Yosher I've played it in the arcade, it's a great game. I'll definitely be picking it up for Switch.
@Amsterdamsters That's good to know! But it playing great in arcade doesn't mean it will also play well on Switch, so I'm not sold quite yet. But that does sound promising. Thank you!
As much as I hope for new IP's, I would be perfectly fine with a ton of Nintendo's older series' making comebacks in modern ways. Old fans will appreciate it, and this stuff will be new and even fascinating to people just learning about it. I'm in the latter camp.
I'll admit, I kind of wrote it off at first, but learning that Nintendo owned it made me curious. Learning that it's still playable in arcades and looking closer at the gameplay, it seems like a really fun game I might pick up. I remember having fun with one or two racing games in arcades years back, so I'll probably grab this to try and recapture that feeling, though I expect it to be enjoyable in its own right.
The Cruis'n title brings back all sorts of memories for me, looking forward to playing this.
@Ghost_of_Hasashi be careful this could turn out to be a one print run release (quantity unknown) which could mean that it’s harder to find on store shelves than you think. Best pre order online where possible.
@Andrew5678 "I'll admit, I kind of wrote it off at first, but learning that Nintendo owned it made me curious"
Yep, they launched the first arcade one in 1994 at the same time as Killer Instinct. Both arcade games used "Ultra 64" hardware! I think Nintendo hoped to take on Ridge Racer which was all the rage at the time.
I honestly wasn't expecting another racing IP owned by Nintendo to make it to Switch; usually we get a Mario Kart for each console generation and then nothing else from them until the next one, and I never thought Cruis'n would be the racing IP they'd choose to bring back.
That said, I haven't touched a Cruis'n game since my parents rented Exotica from Blockbuster, so I'm pretty hyped for this. Hopefully it sells well enough and Nintendo stops making these arcade exclusives! Also obligatory Nintendo fan comment that they should bring back F-ZERO next.
I'm on the fence with this one, I'm not sure if I'll pick it up or not.
Don't get me wrong the trailer looks good and I wouldn't mind a new racing game (other than Asphalt 9 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe), for the Nintendo Switch. However, there are quite a few other Switch games coming out over the next six months or so, that this isn't anywhere near a gaming priority to me.
I wish we get a list of all 29 tracks on where each track is located.
I never attempted any of these in the arcade but yeah, an arcade racer with unlockable school buses and unicorns sounds like fun to me!
No new cool racing games, kart racers are allowed.
Actually, the Wii U (which was a commercial failure) was the only Nintendo home console which only had Mario Kart.
N64 had Wave Race, 1080, F-Zero, Excite Bike and Diddy Kong Racing.
GameCube had Wave Race, 1080, Kirby Air Ride and F-Zero.
Wii had Excite Truck, Excitebots, WiiWare Excite Bike and Donkey Kong Jet Race/Barrel Blast.
Crusn makes me miss killer instinct
Pretty excited for this one. I prefer arcade racing to sim racing so this is a perfect fit for me.
@Clyde_Radcliffe a new Wave Race would be epic! Maybe they could add some locations from other Nintendo games as races such as The Seaside Kingdom in Mario Odyssey, Rico Harbour from Mario Sunshine, the coast near Eventide island in Breath of the Wild or Hylia River.
@MarioBrickLayer That would be so good! I found out NST who developed Wave Race Blue Storm played a big part in developing Bowser's Fury. It makes sense when you see there's a lot of Wave Race like elements to it with the Plessie rides, the jumps etc and the final battle with Bowser. They could definitely use that as the basis of an engine for a new Wave Race.
I have to be honest, when I saw this shown in the direct I thought "Oh, that's neat. I may look into that at some point.". However now that I'm seeing a full trailer I'm noticing things that remind me of Burnout, like the destruction of opponents on the track, and I'm fully on board with this! Looks like a ton of fun.
The arcade machine is all kinds of fun. I am in on this one.
@Nin10dood Zero is the amount of F's given by Nintendo.
Definitely buying this I love this franchise! 💖
@Don I know it's not ideal but if you watch the trailer there is a list of tracks, they appear quite fast so you need to pause the video often to read them.
@ChaoticIgnorance Yeah, I definitely caught the similarity to Burnout, too!
I'm so glad the ratings board leak came to fruition. Next to Metroid Dread Back from the Dead, this was my most anticipated game from E3. This makes me so happy, all this and a unicorn AND A PHYSICAL RELEASE?! SOLD. DAY ONE.
Definitely a reason to purchase! So glad this developer made the choice. Love my collection!
You can race as a dinosaur. Day 1 buy right here.
Many in the comments doesn't know that this is a port of a 2017 arcade game. Maybe if the article mentioned that, they wouldn't think is a sequel to the N64 game.
Anyway, it looks very fun and colorful. I hope it delivers.
I had no idea Nintendo was doing arcade machines again until I saw a Cruisin' machine at the bowling alley with Nintendo branding.
YES! Great news. I was very happy with the announcement at E3, if not surprised (since this website and others revealed the ratings board leak previously). I have given up hope on Pelikan13 / Nicalis ever releasing 90s Arcade Racer, so Cruis'n Blast is a welcome replacement for that niche.
Looks great, I remember enjoying Cruis'n USA when I rented it back in the day. Definitely fits that arcade-y racing feel while not being a kart racer either, good stuff.
@Realness Switch version will have 24 tracks. In the trailer they show the list of new tracks.
@EmirParkreiner Fair enough, I guess it just feels like it's been forever since they released a racing game that didn't have the bing bing wahoo man.
@DK-Fan it is a sequel to Exotica though. It was the last Cruis'n game not including the renamed Fast and Furious Wii game.
@Realness The original 5 tracks from the arcade plus 24 new tracks exclusively for the switch version. A total of 29 tracks!
@Lanmanna Yes, but it appeared first on arcades.
I had the chance to play this and Mario Kart Arcade GP DX at the same location. Will definitely pick this up physically.
Somehow I've been able to play the three Mario Kart Arcade GP games and even F-Zero AX on original hardware.
I hope the bowling alley that had F-Zero AX still has it by the time I go again and that the arcade that has the Luigi's Mansion arcade is still open in the city where my sister lives.
@Clyde_Radcliffe For real?? No online play? Was this actually confirmed somewhere? If true, then that's seriously disappointing.
@Andy_Witmyer It would say on the description on it's listing on Nintendo's site if it did, but just says "Up to four players can race together, so pick your favorite vehicle and hit the road!"
I guess they could add it later if it sold well potentially but how often does that happen?
According to german website ntower, a physical release for Germany has been confirmed on Nintendo's official website, so it's fair to assume all of Europe will get a physical release.
@Realness no there are 24 tracks in the arcade version being brought over…and 5 NEW tracks. They are saying they are bringing arcade mode to all 5 new tracks.
This game originally existed as an arcade coin op, look it up.
@HeroOfTime32 Nope, the arcade version only had 5 tracks.
They added 24 for the switch release.
This looks fun. However , I'll never be able to look at the title and not think of the Village People's album Cruisin', which had a very specific meaning for those who knew...
(And all the talk about getting a physical release just makes it even funnier.)
Looks fun I think it does a great job of emulating that late 90's arcade racer vibe, while looking updated.
However, owning an Xbox Series X as well and with Forza Horizon 5 coming up around the same time, I just don't see why I would play this over Forza. I might get it further down the line depending on the price, but I think Forza Horizon will definitely be the one that will fulfill my racing games need for this year.
@Ryu_Niiyama Same! My top criterion for grading all future racing games will be "can you play as a triceratops?"
@Casco You would play this one over Forza because Forza Horizon is not a full on arcade racer. It's stuck in between, a "simcade"
@Chowdaire Nice, thanks for clarifying!
Just in case Raw Thrills are reading this, I would take a conversion of H2 Overdrive any day of the week! Thanks.
@JasmineDragon it is a good way to find great games!
This is rad. Cant wait!
