@johnvboy each of us have our own ideas of what we would like from a company we buy from. Some will stick with the company through good and hard times, and maybe they will juggle their time between other consoles. Others will trade in what they have for the latest console, this year Switch next Xbox etc and all that's ok, it's choice.
But companies don't want us to sit quietly and suck it up, we are in the age of 'how are we doing', 'would you recommend us' tell us how we can improve' etc. Positive criticism is better for a company than saying nothing.

The casual gamer is well catered for by Nintendo, but at a cost to the serious gamer, who might well look else where for some of their games. The promise of a BotW game every 5 years is not good enough.

@jowe_gw 5 is ok I would think 6 a year, one every two months. And maybe I would buy 3 of those. Pokémon, AC and Mario Party and Splatoon are not games I would buy.

But this year I have only bought 1 Nintendo game so far, so from my perspective things Nintendo aren't looking good.

@jowe_gw the ports were a way for Nintendo to recoupe lost money from poor sales. Not as you suggested to fill a gap between the new games.

So my question was if you are correct then what is a reasonable amount of new games to expect from Nintendo each year?

You see I've played all the ports when they were on the Wii u and I don't want to play them again. So I rely on new games, so give me an amount?

@jowe_gw the ports from Wii u are so that Nintendo can get some money back on the games that previously didn't sell well because of the poor console sales.

So how many new games do you think is a reasonable amount to expect from Nintendo each year?

@jowe_gw yes Nintendo give other developers the franchise on their games to developed and port new games. I assume it is Nintendo's funding that make things happen, and Nintendo say what games are to be made. So if we get to many ports that is what Nintendo want.

@johnvboy should I be looking at things from your point of view? Because that is what you have just given me, your point of view.

My point of view is from my perspective and those similar to me; long time Nintendo gamers. Me from the release of the N64, others before that. I have never owned a console that did not have Nintendo printed on it.

But I feel that Nintendo can't please everyone, and yes a big new market of younger Lite owners has emerged and Nintendo thinks it's Christmas every day.

But from where I sit, I spend my money on Nintendo games and third party games. Most always physical and just a handful of indi games. I do not buy ports of games Ive already played unless they have enough new content.

So from my perspective I see a lack of new games from Nintendo and most of the third party ones need a more powerful Switch to get the best from them.

When all the kids Switch Lites are sitting in cupboards gathering dust because they have moved to some other fad, and the serious gamers have moved to Steam or the new Sony handheld (yes I think they are working on one) Nintendo will look back and think 2020/2021 was the year we took our eye off the ball.

It does not look like the type of game I would want to play, I am not be impressed or tempted by the score. 🙃

@stiligFox BUT it was released and gamers paid full price for it. That is a consideration Nintendo has conveniently over looked with this port.

Well I don't accept it. I work hard for my money and I want value when I spend it. I see this as a cash grab, I've already paid full price for the original. Look deep into some YouTube reviews and there are more honest ones out there. The reviewers that receive free game codes normally give the higher scores and avoid discussing the price.

I just don't buy Nintendo ports unless they have extra content or a realistic price for an old game.

@ModdedInkling Nintendo make and publish games that's what they do. And they make consoles so that the games they make can be exclusive to their console. Nintendo make money to make a profit to investing in new games.

In five years time when we have new Nintendo consoles and the existing game cards are not compatible and BotW gets a makeover and a full price tag, you will be happy to hand Nintendo the full price for a 10 year old game that will then be in 4k?

@The_New_Butler yes you are probably right, that's why we have had so many Wii u ports over the last four years. And a shortage of new games.

@jowe_gw nothing wrong with an old Zelda game getting a facelift and selling at full price. More money for Nintendo I guess, but not my money.

If it was a remake then maybe it would earn the full price. But for each port we get, it's one new game less.

Nintendo are playing to the new kids on the block, The Switch Lite owners who haven't played the original and think 'port' is one side of a ship, which it is.

It needs the new Steam handheld to sell well, so that Nintendo wakes up and smells the coffee.

I think there is a fine line between 'locked in your bedroom playing on line games with virtual friends, and 'get a life'.

Everything in moderation, is fine. But really, if you have moved country and left your 'chums' behind get new chums. 🙃

Nothing lasts for ever and after all the Wii u and 3ds are all but secondhand market products with second hand games. I don't see Nintendo's profit margin being that much for these products.

Modern as in coming up to five years old, platform?🙃

I won't buy any game that wants me to own it before I've read a review or played a demo.

It was suggested it is a game for children, which suggests to me a game that almost plays itself, like Kirby on Switch.

But at least the price is reasonable, unlike Kirby.

I'm glad they are doing well, I did read a couple of years ago that it could be all over for them.
I think I'll buy Disgaea 6 just to make it 5,000,000 and one. 😃

Well I haven't bought a new console for well over four years and the money is burning a hole in my pocket. Nintendo don't seem to want it, so I was considering giving it to Sony when the PS5 are more readily available. But the Steam Deck looks interesting, especially the high end variant.

If Nintendo are not making additional profit from the Old model then it must be making a good profit already. They are in business to make profits.

When they stop production of the existing Switch next year then the only Switch available will be the Oled with the higher price tag. The existing Switch will be bundled off at Christmas. Leaving way for guess what?

@MS7000 good point, because of the lack of Nintendo games at the moment I would buy Skyward Sword, if it was a third less.

If enough of us refused to buy the game them maybe the next 20 plus ports would be priced more reasonable. But on principal I don't want to support scalpers, which Nintendo seem to be at the moment.

@roboshort Monster Hunter Stories 2 is not an exclusive.

One new Nintendo game a month would be good. And I don't mean Wii or Wii U ports.

And games like Mario Golf should be released as a complete game and not half a game with DLC added at some future date.

If Nintendo think they can stick a full price tag on to them we will see them well before the next tax year. But I bet they are waiting to see how Skyward Sword sales go with its full price tag.

I feel that Nintendo's core business is games, with consoles second. But they are spending to much time on gimmicks. But they are a business and their first priority is to make money, not games, games are now second or third. After theme parks, movies,TV etc.

If you took away the onslaught of indi games and second rate 3rd party games Nintendo would be hard pressed to keep pace.

@HalBailman well the one thing Nintendo needs right now is to show that it is still in the home console market. Until last week it dominated the handheld market, now its got a little competition there.

Nintendo won't survive just turning out Switch Lites and adding these sales to the Switch sales to out do the other two home consoles.
They realise this hence the Oled, but that does not address its home console issue. And to wait another two years is to long.

This big question with this game is; if you have played the original is this version worth the full asking price. Have Nintendo done enough to justify the price?

Smartphones, readers and Nintendo consoles are the three things I buy on release date.

I bought a new reader earlier this year, my new Smartphone is out in October. That leaves the Switch. But because I play mostly docked, do I need this new variant?

I never had a playstation and I promised myself
months ago, if the Switch Pro isn't out this year ill buy the PS. And play 3rd party games the way they should be played.

My biggest gripe from that list is Mario Golf. A game I was looking forward to but it released at full price with a poor amount of content. On principal I would not buy it. Looking for something new to play I did play MH stories 2 demo but couldn't get into it, if I remember there is a lot of speech text which may have put me off. But then Amazon were offering a voucher and a discount on Mario Golf which took 40% off the price. So for me it paid not to rush to buy on release date.

The graphics on MH stories 2 look good, I might restart the demo and give it another go. I prefer gamer recommendation than reviewers.😃

@HalBailman Nintendo will do to the Switch what it's done to Mario Kart and Super Mario Bros, it will just keep adding to it.

We will get the Switch Oled with 4k, more memory and a few other minor things, it will be profitable for Nintendo as they will sell it for £100 more than the Switch Oled. And a good percentage of gamers will pay the extra.

I doubt there will ever be a console called Switch 2. When Nintendo abandons the Switch it will be for a completely separate console with a new name. My guess, The Nintendo Cloud.

Steam has good reviews. When do we get the Oled reviews?

That said, this topic is titled 'debut sells fall well short of rise' and there was more than one game listed, and MH is currently number one. So my previous comments are reasonable.

My comments were general, to all games listed, although they would apply more to Mario Golf. I have never played a MH game, although I played some of MH stories 2 demo, but didn't feel it was for me.

If games are not selling well at launch in Japan,
compared to the amounts of Switches sold there is a reason for this and my post gives my thoughts.
Maybe you could explain or give a better reason why MH stories 2 launch sales are so low compared to MHRise?

@roy130390 I understand your point, but it is still a 10 year old game which has been given a makeover, had some of the annoying bits removed and released as a full priced game.

I have played and liked the original and at the time paid full price for it. This is Nintendo 'cash grabbing', relying on new gamers to think this is a new game, and to them it maybe.

We have dozens of Wii games that could get the same treatment. For that reason and reluctantly, I hope they don't sell well.

Steam is very tempting. My biggest gripe with Nintendo is that it wants 3rd party developers games on the Switch (I think, although I'm having my doubts), but they are happy for their customers to settle for cutdown versions of these games.

Do we assume that there is no Switch Pro on the horizon, in which case Steam looks like the way to go.
If there is a Pro then maybe we could hang on.

@The_New_Butler I agree. I may get the Switch Oled as my handheld device and to play a few Nintendo Games. Then invest in a PS5 for other games.

How much of a reduction in quality do we, Switch owners, have to put up with.

The figures are low when you think there are over twenty million Switch units sold to date in Japan.

I think it's the quality of the games that are to blame as well as the vast quantity of indi games released.

Lack of quality, to much quantity.

Also I bet that a vast amount of Switch Lites are sitting in draws and cupboard unused. Bought to play say, Animal Crossing, but that had been played enough and so the console isn't used that much anymore.
