During today's Nintendo Direct Showcase, Capcom revealed that several Resident Evil games will be coming to the Switch. These include Resident Evil: Village, Resident Evil: Biohazard (7), Resident Evil 2, and Resident Evil 3.
The catch, of course, is that all games will be available as Cloud Versions, which isn't ideal, but we'll take what we can get.
Resident Evil: Village will release on October 28th, 2022. The upcoming Winter's Expansion, which includes a third-person mode, a new story, and more will launch on December 2nd, 2022.
As for the other games, we have a more vague '2022' release window for those.
What do you think of this announcement? Happy? Annoyed? Grab an herb and let us know!

I'll try the demos and see how they like my internet. I'm glad there is at least an option.
Is there seriously profit to be made from these cloud versions? They just keep coming.
Mr X comes to chase you in RE2, but then stops as he is buffering and you just run away. =)
YOO THAT'S SI-and they're cloud. Yay......
Keep them locked away. Not spending my hard earned money on cloud versions. But, good for those who actually I want these cloud versions I suppose.
Meh, cloud versions.
I am not surprised. Resident Evil 7 was a cloud version in Japan and now they are bringing that over to the West in addition to Village, RE2R, RE3R.
These games couldn't run natively on Switch anyway. It is even a bit demanding for Xbox One and PS4 versions and that is the base versions too.
At first I was shocked and ready to tell my brother...and then it’s shown that it’s cloud...and to make matters worse 2 other RE games are gonna be cloud as well. It feels like they slapped their fans kicked them between the legs and then spat on them while they’re down. Talk about disrespectful. 😒
The only redeeming thing about the announcement was the dlc and that’s it.
Straight from day one buy to easy pass.
What's worst than one disappointment, now we got four. Oh boy these cloud trash just never stop coming do they? Just give us the old games Capcom, not only are these terrible remakes, they completely ruin most of what made the original good. Give us the native Resident Evil 2, 3, and Code Veronica X please. Demake RE7 & 8 if possible.
The Final insult to a pretty awful direct.
Scary clouds on the horizon...
plagiarism is great
I hope people aren’t upset these are cloud versions because there is no way in heck that the switch would be able to run these natively. A little common sense please. 😃
Would someone kindly fill me in on how these cloud games work on Switch? What platform is the game actually running on? In other words, is it essentially a PC game with the Switch merely used as a screen and controller?
@Serpenterror It’s the future. Right now it seems ugly and scary but as technology advances we will all be connected to the internet at all times and cloud versions will not be scary. We’re almost there. Internet connections and high speeds are everywhere. It’s just a matter of execution.
Eww, cloud versions. No thank you.
I truly believe that with a little innovation (and development skill) these could be respectfully ported. It’s too bad Capcom couldn’t see it any other way.
@Greatluigi I don't think it would have been really able to run on the switch either way though
@weelz79 ummmm… no. Like trying to fit the triangle piece in the circle slot of a shape cube puzzle. As much I love the switch it is a severely underpowered system.
@weelz79 it couldn't. base PS4 and Xbox One had a bit of trouble running smoothly as well.
And don't get me started on "RE engine runs on Switch". The RE engine on Switch is the one that is built specifically for the Switch.
@Tendogamerxxx also the base PS4 and base Xbox One versions weren't 100% smooth as well. Game is a bit taxing on those consoles.
I'd prefer having the 3 original games instead of "Cloud Versions"... mooooaaaahh
So like kingdom hearts and guardians of the galaxy now resident evil switch users always get played dirty that killed my hype and I won't ever support cloud gaming.
So they might as well not exist. Got it.
@Tendogamerxxx Technology advances but only in some areas, not all. The issue with the future is that companies don't perfect these technology, they kept jumping it up more and more hoping it'll be good when it's not. Many countries around the world are still stuck offline so your claim that the future is going to be like this isn't legit. Not many countries embrace cloud gaming and cloud based service like Netflix, Stadia, and GForceNow aren't available everywhere, heck Stadia isn't even worldwide. Unless there's cities on every corners of the Earth I don't see how cloud gaming is going to work or be the future of something, many cities in Russia are stuck in the cold 60 below zero all year long even in the summer with online and wireless connection having difficulty everyday so how you gonna had cloud gaming over there and cities like Venice are in waters? Companies came up with technologies but does not realize not every part of the world is the same. When you can't serve the whole world, your service failed.
Someone must be making money out of these Clown games, or they're just dirty cheap to stream.
I has PC, i has make buy there. I not has make buy cloud in yet or in future.
I has stay close to hardware.
Runs great on my Switch. Can't wait to sit in the park and play this game
@Tendogamerxxx
One of the core flaws of cloud gaming is one that is shared among pretty much all service based models which is that access to the games is dependant on said service meaning if a game is delisted or said service becomes unavailable then there isn't the "safety net" of being able to play the game as long as its on your system which digital games at least have.
I feel its fine to have as an option but when services become the only way to play a game then that is the issue.
in the case of these games cases it is fortunate they are able to be played natively on other systems though i am hoping that we do get a follow up to the switch itself since mobile tech has improved quite a bit since the switch launch.
though the biggest hurdle for that would be the chip shortage.
Cloud versions as purchases are lame.
It'd be acceptable if it was a subscription service with acceptable price and performance.
@Gamergirl94 ok
The resident evil games couldn't run on Switch natively but i get your argument about kingdom hearts
@jrt87 fair enough
@Ryu_Niiyama I was actually thinking about that, the demo will determine if I get the game or not. I know I have a good internet, but no idea how it will work with a switch could game.
@Mgalens The chip shortage is definitely causing a next gen crisis. I’m sure that people that don’t like to spend on new consoles every 4-5 years are happy. I on the other hand see this as the dark ages of video game progress since tech has been affected. This would be around the time we’re we would be unboxing the Switch 2 and talking about the PS6 and new Xbox. Tech definitely took a hit with COVID. Sad times…
@JeanPaul Yeah it varies. Like Hitman 3 runs fine for me but Control, not so much. So I love it when we get demos.
I'd love to know the sales figures for these cloud games. I've only tried control so far and it was unplayable.
My Internet connection is pretty fast but there must be many with much faster Internet for these games to sell.
Also, demos only show how the games perform if you play it at a busy time when the rest of the family are using devices. I tried the demo under optimal conditions, bought the game but then couldn't play it most of the time.
@Dr_Luigi Ownership is mostly a choice still. I buy games, I have Game Pass. The problem is when you purchase a cloud version, but it has an expiry date that we're not made aware of.
Also heard bad things about Switch cloud game peformance in general.
Xcloud has become quite good and is part of Game pass, while PSNOW is somewhere in the middle from what I read.
This right here! This!!!! Is just another thing that makes me insanely happy I bought a steam deck. The next time I will touch my switch is for the new Zelda. Booooooring direct. 👇👎
@Tendogamerxxx
The switch also had an awkward release window since it was released right in the middle of the ps4/XBO and PS5/XSX.
it was understandable due to the wiiu situation but it also lead to a point where the power gap between Nintendo's system and the competition is wider than ever (which is why i could understand why people were hoping for a ps4 pro/new 3ds -like model)
I would rather have the original trilogy on one cartridge, than these cloud versions.
Why bother, is all I have to say. When I saw the RE: Village artwork during a Nintendo Direct, admittedly, I had to double check to see if I was actually seeing what I thought I was seeing. For a second there I was shocked, although I knew I shouldn't be because I knew there was no way in hell the system could run the game, and that if it really is coming to Switch it's going to be some stupid "cloud" version. I'll pass, but then I have access to the game on Xbox One X and Xbox Series S so I'm not worried about it.
I guess it's good that people who otherwise may not have a way to play these games soon will be able to, if their internet connection is fast and stable at least, and if the extra lag doesn't kill it, but for every one of these games the question grows stronger: We need a more powerful console... where is it, Nintendo? Every single time a company releases one of these "cloud" games on Switch that is the question that goes through my head as I pass them by, and these days companies are announcing multiple of them at a time. I would say that is not a good sign.
@Tendogamerxxx Nobody was asking for these on the Switch and these had no reason to be on Switch. For one they aren't native so they won't be offering the best experience to play at home and because they required an internet connection at all time, they aren't suitable for portable play either. So what was their purpose? None, they are just scams. You waste money for the worst experience that you can't own, can't take it with you, and can't play it any time.
Steam Deck and mod support, baby.
Get out of here with this "Cloud" nonsense.
@Dr_Luigi
Yeah the latter was what i was more getting at.
I agree that for 2017 the switch managed to balance its hardware very well and am looking forward to seeing what can be done with a theoretical switch 2 with the mobile hardware we have now.
Well yeah as no way in hell the Switch could run them.
@Dr_Luigi You can choose to not purchase.
Those who still buy the predatory microtransaction filled sports games are part of a much bigger problem.
While I see your issue, at a certain point, patches are a part of software development.
Guess I will wait for the next switch or whatever it is so I can buy it natively. Cloud as an option is fine I guess but not when it is forced on people. This is my opinion of course but I know others feel the same. 😕
I'm not an RE fan, but my kiddo is excited for RE Village and is willing to put up with cloud. It's a shame it's on cloud.
Can we please stop blaming companies for the Switch's hardware limitations already? Like seriously how is it CAPCOM's fault that the Switch's hardware is extremely outdated?
@Fizza Right?
Not my of tea (cloud gaming). But there's a demo of Village up on eShop right now, so I'll at least give it a try (my connection is nowhere near 1000 Mbit/per sec, so I haven't got high hopes).
Seriously now, guys. WHEN did I snooze through the 6G launch news in the west?😅
@shgamer 1000? My ISP still offers 200 tops at an already hefty monthly fee (and I suppose it could be temporarily 400 which their so-called "turbo button" on-demand service offers in most plans for 3 or 12 hours at a time). And that's HOME internet. Better luck next gen. This gen, a native Revelations 3 made specifically for Switch (or a new version of something older like Code: Veronica or a gyro-based Dead Aim remake) would enthuse me more.😄
I tried the demo is totally a ***** unplayable i have a 65mbit and control and hitman were fine for me is a pass on all of them
This was easily the worst announcement of the Direct. Nintendo Twitter can complain about rpg's all day, but this has to truly take the cake.I know these games are graphical show pieces, but Revelations ran on the 3DS for gods sake. There could of been a much better way than this
Cloud games? No thanks
@Dr_Luigi The difference is that the game is still downloaded onto your SD card (and you can make a backup) even after the servers shut down. With a cloud game, they might just close the service a month after you "bought" the game. A subscription would be a great idea, I could see myself paying for a year worth of playing a cloud-based game.
I’m going to try it next to my router.
@Fighting_Game_Loser
Revelations was built for the 3DS in mind. Was developed for the 3DS and released first on the 3DS
Alos it used a different engine
this is more understandable unlike Kingdom Hearts Trash Edition
Pass, pass, pass, and pass.
I might as well buy them on PC instead.
Cloudy with a high chance of framedrops, because someone had to rain on the parade. Oh well, I wasn't expecting to play them on Switch, now I'm just sure I won't, but hope that those who do enjoy them. I'll be looking forward to Pikmin 4, Octopath 2, Project Zero 4 looks greatly updated as well so that's fantastic news, and Tunic. And of course Zelda and Mario + Rabbids, and a ton more that we already knew were coming, or that weren't mentioned. All in all, not bad, a wide variety of games, and I had little expectations because Nintendo doesn't play with open cards anymore, and I'm not interested in "most games", but have a long wishlist waiting for sales and a long list of games bought during a deep sale
The demo (of Village) actually ran surprisingly well the 2 minutes I played (and it looked really good too imo).
I have the game on my PS4 and I tried streaming it to my PS Vita (via Remote Play), and it looked much, much worse there.
But the thing is also that when you stream from the PS4 to the Vita, you first have to upload/stream it to the WWW from the PS4 and then download/stream it to the Vita.
While when you stream/download to your Switch you "only" have to download/stream it from a server to your Switch and not upload it as well (if that makes sense).
I've only got an around 30 mbit/sec download connection and as I said it ran surprising well and looked great too in game. There were some delays/hiccups/freeze on the title/selection screen though, so I'm not really a "believer" yet (but a I will give it another go later to see if it's actually useful).
@Fighting_Game_Loser Almost like a game built for the 3DS in mind could run on the 3DS. The RE Engine these RE games run on is not built for the Switch, these are demanding games so a Switch native release was impossible.
Not something I'd pay for, 2 and 3 ran passable I'd say, on my PS4. I've not got around to playing Villiage, might wait if I ever pick up a PS5 to play that one.
Instead of giving us native port of one of their games... CAPCOM chose to release cloud versions. Will be a lot better if they'd ported Tatsunoko vs. Capcom on Switch, instead of these dirty cheap thrashes.
Eh, I already have these on ps4. I would've been happier with a collection of the original 3 PS1 games.
At least it is reasonably priced at 40€. It is a less than 1½ years old game after all (oddly the demo seems to be timed - only 5 minutes of play time it seems, before it says it's over).
I will try the demo some more times and see if it continues to run well.
I'm a bit torn though; the PC version is "playable" on Steam Deck according to Steam but do have a audio issues. So should I buy it on Steam at 30€ on a sale right now for a future Steam Deck purchase..
Or should I get the Switch cloud version the 28th of october and then have to wait for the 3rd person "mod" etc. package, till it releases the 2nd of December.
What I do know is that I prefer to play on handhelds and already played the game on my PS4, so.. decisions, decisions..
@Royalblues Same this may be my first Cloud game
Cloud versions yuck! Might as well be Mobile. These games will always be better elsewhere on other platforms where you can have a physical version. Cloud my ass.
This direct made me feel like I should go full on retro.
PLEASE DO A REAL PORT , WE DONT WANT THIS cloud
@nhSnork I have a sort of mobile connection (it does come with a wifi router, but I can take anywhere there's a wall plug and use it).
But 1000 mbit is possible in my country via fiber connection. It's actually cheaper than the connection I've got now. I pay around 33€ a month (the 1000 mbit cost around 27€), but why change something that works (I don't stream 4K HD movies, but only stream Youtube and on rare occasions TV on my 1080p laptop).
But I might go for the 1000 mbit if I can't stream Village well. You could risk the 1000 mbit connection was less stable though.
Better to have a stable low bandwidth connection than an unstable high bandwidth connection, if all you need is Youtube and a few cloud games lol (I'm still a bit on the fence about the latter though, I admit )
Go pound sand, crapcon!
Based on my own test, RE8 does seem to run well enough over cloud, but it still begs the question: Why? Do they expect me to have access to wifi at all times in order to play these? What happens when these versions get delisted or the shop gets shut down in ~10 years?
Ok, 3 tries on the demo and it's over it seems. It's bit too little for me personally (plus I noticed hiccups in my last run). Back to probably getting the game on Steam Deck then.
@shgamer indeed. My own needs are generally covered by a 50 Mbps plan at home while the phone-tethered 4G/3G (the former is memetically known to be slower than the latter here in Belarus at times😏) is likewise more than enough for basic online functions, moderate-to-biggish downloads (stuff north of 15 Gb is more problematic since Switch's handheld sleep mode still likes to cut the connection most of the time) and even stomachable RP streams since Vita's resolution is more or less within the realm of capability. But Switch's 720p screen can't even get eShop trailers without hiccups, and cloud games all seem to be locked to even redundantly crisper stuff despite even my clumsy idle shots at GeForce Now on the phone proving that adaptive stream resolution isn't actually rocket science in this day and age.
Oh well, it's another first world problem at the end of the day, and I've only ever felt truly salty about it when the older bulk of Kingdom Hearts games got lumped into the franchise's general cloudbox. KH3 and its zero-point-something predecessor I can understand - but the games that all originated on PS2 and the Gen 7/8 handhelds? Potent eyebrow raisers indeed. Maybe I'll eventually roll the dice with the Steam ports fot KH/KH2 and play the rest's OG incarnations instead - my proper acquaintance with the franchise conveniently started with Birth by Sleep anyway (although I've only done Aqua's route to date).
@RupeeClock ya I really don’t believe people would pay to play cloud version games.
Resident evil 3 was tempting me but the it a cloud version soo big no from me what a rip off
@Serpenterror You've never heard of Elon Musks internet Starlink clearly.
Remember when there was an effort to port Resident Evil 2 for the N64, and it is still remembered as one of the best ports ever made? It would be so nice if they made a similar effort for Resident Evil 2 Remake...
The cloud version killed the hope I had.
Blech, cloud games on Switch just aren’t for me. Even if these were free I’d probably hesitate to play.
I just feel that the more these cloud titles proliferate, the more vitality they’ll suck from legitimate game releases that you can actually own. Or tempt companies to dump consoles and physical media altogether in the future. The day is coming, but let’s not rush it!
Weren’t they testing RE7 natively? I know the RE Engine can run on the Switch. I know the cloud version of this game existed in Japan for a while, but I was hoping that one would’ve seen a port.
I love resident evil own them all on the ps4 wouldn't buy cloud versions lol
Resident Evil 1 remake is really only one you need and thankfully that's natively on Switch
@daichi42 Some games just can't be ported to Switch. People forget the Switch was dated on release, nowadays its ancient so yeah games like these will be cloud or nothing.
Looking at the Switch port of Sifu, I could see that the graphics are downgraded so it could run, but it also appeared to be running smoothly on Switch and still looked great. I'm not saying it would be easy, but I'm sure a version of RE2 remake could be made for Switch, even if it had to be built especially for the console. As others have already stated, ports of the original trilogy that run natively would be preferable to cloud versions of newer titles, but anyone who wants to play these newer RE games would be better off putting the money towards a Steam Deck than paying for cloud versions that, the moment the servers are taken down, will disappear into thin air.
@WallyWest Yeah, some people probably thought like that before Angel Studios fit an 1.4 GB game in a 64 MB cartridge + exclusive content.
I've played both Doom games on Switch and can say that my experience wasn't diminished because of the "sacrifices" made to run on it.
Edit: RE Engine does run on Switch, MH Rise is an example of that.
The only type of Cloud gaming we respect...
... Wun can only hope.
@Dr_Luigi ah, I get it. I barely even pay attention to those games.
Having said that, Mario Golf 64 is still the best golf game. mini golf in that was awesome.
@Tendogamerxxx
@Mgalens I agree. I'd also add the issue with Cloud Gaming still is digital infrastructure and ISPs coverage, speeds & availability (not to mention- interference, interruptions & disruptions).
If internet connections in most metropolitan & suburban, developed areas still aren’t all that fast, stable or even consistently available for so many consumers… I can only imagine how horrible it could be for them in a potential future where console and/or gaming library where it was requisite & dependent upon those things among other factors & supports 24/7 worldwide. Yikes.
Hopefully the infrastructure & affordability issues improve and that all gets sorted out much better for society prior to this potentially becoming a new industry norm in the future.
… Wun can only hope.
Couldn't they just wait until Nintendo released a console capable of running these games? I know this was teased before, but this better not be the future of Resident Evil at Nintendo.
I still hope they are developing an exclusive Resident Evil there like they did with Monster Hunter Rise, something that uses the Joy-Cons pretty well.
I've never played a RE game and I don't think I'll like them but I'm kinda interested in Village because vampires and the memes.
No, No, No and No again for all these Resident Evil cloud versions.
@daichi42 The engine used for MH is a modified version of it built for the Switch in mind. The version used for the RE games is built for those consoles in mind, its a demanding engine and the RE games have a lot going on. The Switch is not a miracle machine that can run anything with enough tweaks, you're expecting games from the peak of what last gen could do to run on a console that is weaker then the original X1.
True horror in gaming right here.
@danemord I dont know if you are being sarcastic or your park has free WiFi, otherwise as it is cloud version you need solid internet to play it so you wont be able to
And this is why these Cloud games are resident evils as you can only play them at home.
I'm definitely buying all those.. and I own them on PS4 as well. I just really want these on my Switch too.
@Purgatorium I've been playing them since 1996 and you'd definitely need to play them all in order to understand what's happening.
@Bunkerneath I beg your pardon! For once, I'm dead serious
https://i.imgur.com/9TdPlex.jpeg
https://i.imgur.com/sCEjMrz.jpg
I runs without any problems at all on a cheap mobile hotspot
@danemord change your brackets to square brackets and after the image have a /img
Fair play, the internet where I am is no way good enough to do that especially through a mobile hot spot
@Bunkerneath
Couldn't really make it work with the other website, so I'll just leave them as hyperlinks.
But yea, it's grand when the government invests on proper network
@WallyWest But that's my point. Resident Evil 2 on the N64 was the "impossible" port back then and they did make a miracle. It had lower resolution but also better aliasing. If you're interested watch how they did it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BaX5YUZ5FLk
I just wanted to see RE2 reprise that feat and become an impossible port again. It would be difficult? Yes. But it is doable? Probably. Panic Button did it for Doom 2016 and Eternal.
In the end Capcom chose the "easy" (lazy) way, but let's see how it goes.
I was so excited at first. Then I saw the dreaded word "Cloud" and I was super bummed out. I know the Switch can't be expected to produce graphics like its stronger counterparts, but still... What a bummer
Was very surprised when I saw the village demo available for download in the eshop (I’m in Australia). First time a cloud game has been available on the eshop here if I’m not mistaken. Ran perfectly and looked amazing.
The beauty of the Steam Deck, we don't need cloud versions 😎
I tried the village demo now on switch. It was horrible. And I don’t mean that as scary. I mean worthless. Sooo laggy and impossible to control.
@JustMonika Well that's never going to happen lol. Can I just read a summary?
i've said it before the gamecube was nintendo's system that was more powerful than the PS2 and people ignored it so why should they make a real powerful system right now that could rival the other systems. They would have to make a powerful hybrid for that. And they can't just make a home console because it would get ignored again
Shame on you capcom!
Not touching this with a barge pole. Companies need to learn that cloud versions suck and nothing will change that.
@daichi42
That's not how technology and game development works...
You can't demand an 'impossible' port just because a difficult port has been done before.
That's like saying 'We made the impossible happen before when we landed on the moon. So hurry up and build a warp-drive already.'
@HalloHerrNoob Whoa, you just compared graphic tuning on video games with warp drive technology? You actually think it is the same kind of effort?
Ok, let's leave it like that, now I know the kind of person I'm losing my time with.
