One of the pieces of update news to come out of the Nintendo Direct Showcase was the reveal of the new content coming to Mario Strikers: Battle League.
The big take aways from this announcement was the arrival of two new players: Pauline and Diddy Kong. Making a name for herself following Super Mario Odyssey, Pauline is set to be a useful asset on your team, with Nintendo summarising her play style as the following: 'a physical powerhouse with fast movements and strong tackles.'
Diddy Kong looks set to play the field a little more in the midfield position, being initially described as 'a midfield speedster with dazzling techniques and high pass accuracy.'
On top of these new signings, the update will also entail new gear, another stadium, a skill point-based Striker Ranking, customisation options for supporters and match celebration effects.
With all of these coming out as a part of the update, we can't help but wonder whether they would have been better to just delay and release a finished game after all! The release date for the update is currently listed as 'this month', but we will be sure to update you as soon as we have some more specifics.

Hey, it's almost a complete game now!
I love that Pauline is a Tank for some reason.
I feel like such a looser purchasing this gggame.
Diddy was expected, but Pauline was a welcome surprise. Will definitely hop back into the game to try them out.
More characters to destroy me online now 😅
Brilliant character choices, brilliant animations, brilliant everything really. Still not interested in Battle League myself but these updates are great.
@Ryu_Niiyama Well of course she is, she's goddamn packi-
@Fizza ? I don't understand your response.
Oh wow. A FREE update!
@Ryu_Niiyama It's probably best that you don't.
Well that’s cool I guess.
@Fizza Works for me.
Ah it’s not a Strikers Battle league comment section here without people acting perplex that people can actually enjoy this game without a tacked on story mode or whatever filler for “content”.
People should realize quick that people buy these types of casual sports games like Strikers Battle League or Switch sports not because it has 100+ hours of content like it’s a JRPG, but because of the gameplay being quick fun pick-up-and-play with other people. Face it: Your just not the target audience.
People would still enjoy MK8D even if it had 1/4 of the current content as crazy as that sounds for some people here
When it comes to Mario Strikers, Pauline certainly comes out of nowhere for some reason. I'm not complaining, though. But I hope Hammer Bro., a staple of the series, makes a comeback.
It'd be totally out of the left field if the game kept the grit of the past games. I mean, I cannot imagine Pauline being as aggressive as Peach or Daisy in the first two Strikers.
I want characters from different Nintendo series to be added in like in Mariokart 8
@Arawn93 I agree with your argument, it would just hold up better if the games you mentioned weren't full price titles. They both should have been £25 games max.
But they were/are full priced and people have every right to expect the content of a full priced game.
Still no sign of 4-person online teams eh? The disappointed remains unabated.
Oh Strikers *sigh. Interesting comments on this game. I do enjoy Mario Strikers somewhat as the core gameplay is pretty tight, but I definitely agree that it is very light on content. Especially moreso if you want more offline, single player content- without online the game is pretty much tragic as there’s not much variety or things to do/unlock/achieve. I mean even the slim stadium upgrades are locked to the online battle league silver coin payments and use which is silly. Hopefully they add more modes, characters, cosmetics, customization etc. very soon and not drip-feed content longterm.
Online matches being the main portion of the game can get pretty grueling as there are a lot of hardcore advanced players on there as I feel many casual players have dropped the game by now or don't participate nearly as much. Also, we need Pom Pom or the Kremling Kritter back as a goalie option cuz Boom Boom be letting me down constantly smh. Either that or an option to play/switch to a manual goalie as well. That could also go well for a penalty kick mode too.
Still waiting and hopeful for a new Mario 3-On-3 Hoops, Mario Superstar Sluggers & Mario Sports Mix on Switch that are more expansive & comprehensive than the previous Mario Sports offerings this far.
… Wun can only hope.
@Arawn93
I speak as someone who is the target audience for these games: someone that’s enamored with the Mario brand and has friends to engage in multiplayer showdowns: it’s still not worth it. All of the best Mario multiplayer games have varied concepts and multiplayer modes and single player modes that make practicing and improving fun. Like, people rag on Tennis Aces, but that game at least has varied courses, a bunch of characters, several different multiplayer modes that drastically change the way you play, and a decently fun story mode that’s great to blast through. Strikers has like 8 stages that all play the exact same way, an admittedly fun gameplay concept that wears painfully thin after a few hours because all the matches play the same way, and one single player mode that’s just a tournament that’s either way too easy or unfairly difficult. I just really don’t buy the, “Mario spinoffs are supposed to be devoid of content” argument when Nintendo has done much better than this.
@Friscobay
To quote the YouTuber Scott the Woz (in a family-friendly fashion)
“Some may ask, why do you continue to purchase Nintendo games if they treat you like crap? Well, how do I know if they’ll treat me like crap if I don’t buy their games?”
Such is the cycle of a Mario Sports fan.
Shocked that Diddy Kong wasn’t apart of the initial roster. This is why I avoid these new Mario sports games. If I’m paying full price for a game, it better have plenty of content.
It's embarrassing to compare Splatoon 3 with Mario Strikers, two $60 games focused on online play.
I dropped this game so quickly after lunch. Just felt kind of boring. I doubt I'll go back to it anytime soon unfortunately.
Hahaha love the very niche sub heading that anyone not as old as me or familiar with Alan Partridge won't get. 😅
Haven't played it since release weekend! Still baffled by lack of modes, story content and decision to do DLC characters......really poor
Glad I never picked this up...
The game seemed to have so little content at launch and now that content is slowly being added most people have moved on...
To little too late Nintendo....
You dropped the ball with this release.
The characters are cool but otherwise these updates are incredibly underwhelming. :/
This month? when is this month? we still have over 2 weeks of September left. It really grates on my nerves when no specific date is given 🙄
@Nintendo_Alski I'm 45 years of age but correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't he a voice actor in an 80s puppet show called Spitting Image? if I recall it featured British government puppets 😅
It's such a long time ago so I've kinda forgotten tbh.
Who knows, maybe they (Next Level Games) are working on something more ambitious simultaneously with Mario Strikers.
Anyway only Petey and Bowser Jr left to complete the rosters of Strikers Charged!
I bought this game for me and my boy and it just got so boring so fast.
@Kiz3000 except what is “full price” worth of content? It’s an arbitrary amount between person A and Person B with their own standards.
Also content amount shouldn’t determine “worth the price” if people can still get their dollar worth of enjoyment because it’s a fun jump-in-and-play that they play often with friends/family
@JakedaArbok Cool. As someone that also fits into that target audience demographic: Strikers Battleleague already did what it was supposed to do: Be a fun casual sports game where actual gameplay was the #1 priority.
Everything else is gravy and game doesn’t need an arbitrary amount of content padding to suddenly become “amazing game” as shocking as that might sound for some people here. Not all gamers measure “hours of content” as the equivalent for how good/fun a game is.
This isn’t some outlier hot take, but what the vast majority of people that bought Switch Sports and this game felt. They didn’t try to get a JRPG experience out of the games. If amount of content was what truly mattered then the game would have flopped simple as that. The reality was the exact opposite.
Ya, I really like this one. The peanut gallery is silly.
@Clark2k two completely different types of games lol
@Arawn93
It’s perfectly fine if people like the game. If they find worth in it, good for them! But that doesn’t change the fact that the general consensus of the game is “Bought it, played for a few hours, that’s about it, which contributes to it’s anemic review score on Metacritic despite being a game in a fan favorite franchise that people have waited years for. This game is emblematic of Nintendo churning out the bare minimum, and I think that it’s worth people throwing a big stink about.
I don’t need hundreds of hours in this game to have a good time, but when I can pop in the N64 Expansion and get more gameplay hours out of Mario Tennis and Golf, that’s a problem. I don’t even want some insane amount of stuff to do; literally adding a basic story or challenge mode that could be all text or contain next to no story at all, or even just launching with around 15 characters and actual varied stages would do the trick for me. It’s not an insane amount, the N64 games did it effortlessly, why is it a problem here?
@JakedaArbok Well, If you talk specifically about Mario sport games, golf and tennis series are solid good for me. But this one is a hyped piece of bs. I blame pre-paid journalists
@RubyCarbuncle haha you are only a year older than me then 😄
Spitting image was indeed an 80s political puppet show, but I'm not sure if Steve Coogan ever voiced any characters.
The sub heading is a reference to something Steve Coogans character Alan Partridge says on a mock sports news section on a satirical comedy show called the Day Today.
@Friscobay
Yeah, fair point. It just seems like we’re getting less and less content with each entry. Hopefully the next editions are still acceptable.
@JakedaArbok there will be no next entry for me. I’m done with this one. 59€ done.
This game is so disappointing. It was undeniably fun for a while, but I can’t see me going back. Waste of money.
