In an announcement that we genuinely hadn't predicted, Shigeru Miyamoto just made an appearance at the Nintendo Direct Showcase to reveal that Pikmin 4 is on its way, finally! Check out the teaser trailer above.
While there was little in terms of gameplay or release information, Miyamoto stated that the game is going to employ a new Pikmin deployment mechanic in which you will be able to play in a mode much closer to the ground.
After only seeing one brief screenshot and small teaser, we don't have a lot to go on here; however, that doesn't mean that our excitement is any lessened. It looks like we are going to find out more in the coming months as the game is currently listed for release next year.

Probably the saving grace of an otherwise disappointing direct for me. Heck, Miyamoto had me worried when all he showed was Bloom initially.
I can't believe we're witnessing all these games that seemed to disappear finally release! SMTV, Metroid Dread, Bayonetta 3, and now Pikmin 4!
The bait and switch of talking about the mobile game first was surely done on purpose. Fell for it hook line and sinker.

I was excited until the "View of the pikmin"...I hope we have options but being Nintendo I doubt it. I hope they don't mess it up. Pikmin is one of my favorite Nintendo brands so I am highly anticipating this! But man, that low view...

I’ve tried to get into the series multiple times but it just never clicked. However, this might give me the inspiration for another go on 3 before this finally comes.

And for those like me who have been arguing Hey! Pikmin on 3DS was actually the game Miyamoto was talking about in 2015 and 2016, well Hey! Pikmin released in July 2017 and in June 2017 he said Pikmin 4 was still progressing so he must have meant it wasn't Hey! Pikmin, which was announced in September 2016.

@Dr_Luigi When Pikmin 4 was first announced Switch was certainly in development, and even if it wasn't, there isn't that much of a power difference between Wii U and Switch. So if those graphics can be run now, they could have been run then. 🤷 Or else it's a Switch 2 exclusive, hence no date.

@Dr_Luigi 3 felt like a nice mix of the first two games. I was okay with both systems, but 1 gave me that sense of urgency I need to complete something, as someone with ADHD.

Okay, so the "finished/ready to release" Pikmin 4 that Miyamoto was talking about years ago really was Hey! Pikmin.
Lost my sh*t then was very disappointed they were talking about the mobile game, then lost my sh*t even more when they actually announced Pikmin 4 and it was coming next year.
But
The altered view and easy control (or something to that affect?) I dunno.
I love Pikmin as is. Really hope they don't mess up the formula

I'm very glad there was a Pikmin 4 announcement at the end. Between the garbage about the Mario movie and theme park and that mobile game, it was the second time in as many appearances where I found myself wanting him to go away so the Direct might return to something interesting. That absolutely wasn't the case with Miyamoto back in the day; you knew when he showed up that things were about to get LOUD, and for good reason (best example: the Twilight Princess reveal at E3). Nowadays it feels like he's been relegated to being a shill for entirely separate marketing.
Just imagine if he'd stopped at that mobile game. Ugh. Glad he didn't. That entire segment up until Pikmin 4 was an unwelcome intrusion.

I'm so happy right now, the loooong nine year wait has been tough but it feels great to know Pikmin 4 is actually real and coming out next year, can't wait to see what new types of Pikmin there might be this time !

Now I don't know the exact inner workings, but I'm pretty sure Nintendo, like all other companies of it's size, takes into account what does and doesn't sell when deciding what to develop. There are entire departments dedicated to it, it's a full time job people have.
Also they are making Metroid 4 and recently put out Dread. Last proper Pikmin game they made was 3 on the WiiU, which got ported to Switch. There was a tiny hint at Metroid in the Direct too if you re-watch the GoldenEye announcement.
Pikmin 4 look too good to be a Switch game, my gut feeling tell me Pikmin 4 is a Switch sucessor game, no way Pikmin 4 can be a Switch game.

The over-the-shoulder perspective actually does a lot to make me more interested. I usually have a much harder time getting into top-down games for some reason.

This was my highlight of the direct. Beat Pikmin 1 and 3. Both great games. I still find it fascinating watching little creatures carrying stuff and moving around.
Got up out of my chair for this one!! It probably won’t be until late summer next year, but just knowing it EXISTS is a hit of pure joy!
From the little that was shown, this game looks like it should be beautiful! Pikmin is one of my top five feel good games. So pleased to get 4 at last!
Even though they didn't show much, sometimes just the recognition that some franchise is being worked on, not forgotten and is coming in the near future is often just enough assurance for fans.
Wish some other neglected IP's were fortunate enough to get this acknowledgement (looking at you F-Zero, Super Mario RPG, Kid Icarus, Punch Out, Diddy Kong Racing, Wario Land, Rhythm Heaven, Yoshi’s Island, Golden Sun, Eternal Darkness etc.)

besides bloom, never played a pikmin game, love 1st person gyro games so this will be a day one purchase.
The mobile Pikmin app isn't bad... it's just not a game. So if someone gets it expecting it to be then they're bound to be disappointed. It's also not another Pokemon Go app. Yes they're similar but it's a lot more relaxing than that. I got it when it was first released and still actively use it.
Saying all that, if he left it there I would've been sick with disappointment. Really stoked to have Pikmin 4 finally! Saying that, a 1&2 remake would've worked for me too, even though I've completed them both several times. And with such a vague release window for 4, it might have made me feel more content if they went ahead and released 1&2 anyway while we wait.

But there is something suspicious here. I mean, this is definitely coming to Switch, but are you sure this is running on it? Even if the lighting is possible there, the textures and especially, the resolution, are simply looking too high for a game of this scope. Cross-gen... anyone?

Think others may have already said it, but the clock in the trailer seems to be 10:08, suggesting either an August 10th or October 8th release date (depending on whether they're going American or not with it). Hope it's August
