Re: Jet Force Gemini Style Platform Shooter Tamarin Unlikely To Come To Switch Anytime Soon

shazbot

I can't be bothered to check if there were articles about it at the time, but if I recall there was a similar (and much stronger) statement from the dev team that a Hat in Time would NEVER come to the Switch, so there's a chance.

Also, to those complaining about graphics/art style, this is an announcement trailer. I'd be more concerned if this was a launch trailer. I'm personally intrigued.

Re: Rumour: New Switch Model Launching Early 2021 Alongside A Strong Game Lineup, According To Reports

@NEStalgia yeah, personally I'm a handheld-only player (no TV) so my dream refresh scenario is docked performance in handheld. We already know switch is capable, so a UI toggle for performance vs battery life would be enough for me and all hardware versions could benefit from that. (As an aside, why do you have ToCS3 on two platforms? Huge fan?)

Lastly, how much lag does scaling add? My understanding about the mClassic was the reason it worked so well wasn't just the upscaling, but that it did it in 1-2 frames. Can't imagine 2 separate upscalers between the game and my input.

@NEStalgia Overall agree, but depending on the maturity of DLSS 2.0 (behind the scenes), wouldn't it be possible to stick with the Tegra X1+ (no changes), mash in extra RAM and a node refreshed and/or higher clocked CPU and see instant improvements with some games (at a price where Big N can still a per unit profit)?

My understanding is the games that perform the worst with framerates, either in terms of inconsistency or sub-30, it's because of CPU bottlenecking. That change alone would be a major upgrade. And if the DLSS implementation is mature enough, you could theoretically have cores turbo when docked to run DLSS 2.0 to upscale the game nicely to 1440p (with little/no code changes from devs)?

Re: Paper Mario Producer Says He's "Not Opposed To The Fans' Opinions"

Can I be honest? If this is the direction they want to go, fine with me. Can we see a traditional RPG style game with another Nintendo franchise?

Could potentially meld well with Metroid, gating Samus' traditionally earned abilities behind XP and a skill tree.

Maybe put Kirby in the RPG box, aligning his signature ability stealing behind swallowing a certain number of enemies, XP, or a boss character, creating a pseudo-RPG vania? Could also be an opportunity to refresh the Kirby IP and put some true story / lore into the games.

Would even be cool in Pikmin 4, with Nintendo's recent easy mechanic behind a condition gate. If you lose too many Pikmin of a certain type you earn XP and 'unlock' abilities that make the game easier, like your Pikmin evolve tougher skin or more HP or something.

Leaving the claims more outlandish aspects aside (4k? Replacing a 720p panel with 4k?), is it possible it's not a true refresh or pro, just a gen 2 style component update?

Specifically a panel manufacturer switch? If you changed to a panel with a better touch resolution that would meet the improved 'interactivity' claim. And if they updated battery tech that could also contribute to better performance, either through less aggressive GPU throttling in handheld (i.e. docked performance) due to higher capacity, or longer battery life for same reason. Giving 'better performance' just not what people are speculating.

Re: Soapbox: We've Reached The Point-Of-No-Return In This Nindie Love Affair

@Ulysses Now this is the strongest argument I've heard against indies, that I think I've ever heard (with a logical potential solution!).

I suspect at least part of the divergence of mainstream publishers away from indie titles is increased development costs, particularly on the graphical front. For non-retro titles (hence the prevalence of 1, 8 & 16-bit graphics) high fidelity art assets are costly to create & polish. If it was inexpensive (or consistently profitable) more groups would occupy the polished indie niche we are discussing. Despite this I appreciate the gameplay experimentation that indie titles can attempt, even if the low barrier to entry comes at the cost of the market flooding with generic or low-quality titles.

@Hackleckackle My pleasure.

Re: Soapbox: We've Reached The Point-Of-No-Return In This Nindie Love Affair

shazbot

@UmbreonsPapa There's a difference between valid concerns and poorly expressed valid concerns. Insofar as we are members of a shared community, there needs to be common standards of behavior and communication. Accusing someone of 'Aryan-adjacentness' because they are unsympathetic to topics of representation is beyond the pale.

Indie titles represent diverse viewpoints precisely due to their smaller scale and often auteur-driven visions. If someone doesn't like that, or doesn't like that it doesn't represent them, we can disagree or respond with decency. It costs us nothing.

Re: Soapbox: We've Reached The Point-Of-No-Return In This Nindie Love Affair

shazbot

@Hackleckackle Well, off the top of my head: Paper Mario, Takeshi & Hiroshi (from this very indie direct), Oceanhorn 2 (coming from a Finnish developer!), Peaky Blinders that just got reviewed here. I mean, it's not reasonable to suggest male protagonists are currently underrepresented in gaming. Just go look at the reviews tab.

@COVIDberry Thanks for the appreciation. I don't feel like we can give up on discourse though! Sure, people may have talking points, but if I would like them to listen to my perspective it's incumbent on me to demonstrate the behavior I'd like to see by listening to theirs. It doesn't mean I agree, but it means I can model reason and maturity to the best of my ability. (famous last words on the Internet, lol)

Re: Soapbox: We've Reached The Point-Of-No-Return In This Nindie Love Affair

shazbot

@nessisonett That I can wholeheartedly agree with.

@JimmySpades This is a bad argument. When the validity of an argument is contingent on environmental context, the logic itself is insufficient.

There's a contextually implicit argument that I'll make explicit: majority groups are not entitled to the same reasoning as minority/dispossessed groups. An axiom I reject.

And to you I suspect this will matter: I'm a person of mixed race in a non-Caucasian majority society, and the videogames produced by this society do not feature white protagonists. Which would (within your logical context) validate the complaint of previous posters that more white protagonists are needed, as the cultural context of Western, Caucasian protagonist games doesn't match those of this society.

Re: Soapbox: We've Reached The Point-Of-No-Return In This Nindie Love Affair

shazbot

@nessisonett If you go down that path, they're two sides of the same coin: One group demanding LGBTQ+/PoC/etc protagonists, and one demanding caucasian. One is underrepresented historically, but it's the same reasoning - I want characters like me, and less characters not like me.

I'm sympathetic to the idea that seeing people who look / think / act like you is empowering (and I've yet to see anyone like me on ANY screen), but it's disingenuous to contend that when select group X demand people like them on screen it's great, but when white people demand people like them they're Nazi-adjacent.

And inflammatory rhetoric is not conducive to discussion or debate. It's dehumanizing and dismissive, prone to inflame the passions with which you claim you're contending.

Re: Soapbox: We've Reached The Point-Of-No-Return In This Nindie Love Affair

shazbot

@dartmonkey Lol, how many times did you re-write that sentence to work frisson in?

Shazbot approved!

@nessisonett Not that I disagree with the sentiment that complaints about non-caucasian, non-male protagonists are becoming a tired trope, but raising the level of discourse to Nazi-baiting is not appropriate. There's ways to disagree without resorting to that.

To that point, @Hackleckackle, yes you need glasses

Re: Online Retailer Lists Prince Of Persia Remake For Nintendo Switch

shazbot

I think we need a definitive listing page for rumors like this for the switch with statuses - confirm, debunked, inconclusive, or some such.

As it is, you just keep hearing rumors, but by the time it gets confirmed it's like years on. How many games have been 'leaked' by Amazon France or Taiwan ratings board that we haven't heard anything about since?

Re: Oceanhorn 2 Dev Shares First Official Screenshot Of The Upcoming Switch Port

shazbot

I'm inclined to pick it up as I'm half-Finnish. Suomi! Suomi!

Also @Anti-Matter it took me three attempts for BotW to get its hooks into me. The third pickup I told myself I wouldn't play anything else, or put it back down until I beat one of the Divine Beasts. I mean universal praise couldn't be wrong, right?

By giving myself an artificial goal, I pressed through the mechanics that didn't appeal initially, and discovered an awesome game. Highly recommend pressing through at least the Zora domain, and then re-evaluate how you feel.

Re: Poll: What Did You Think Of The August 2020 Nintendo Indie World Showcase?

shazbot

I stayed up late to watch it live and was very pleasantly surprised.

I'm generally a supergiant fan. Loved bastion, didn't actually like transistor (with you @San_D) but could recognize it's quality, even if its specific gameplay loop didn't appeal, and had my eye on Hades on PC for a while. So when that was the lead, I got hyped.

Seriously considering all the shadow drops, and will keep my eyes open for Hades, subnautica and a couple others. That said, will wait for reviews, backlog is big enough already.

Overall, I thought it was amazing, particularly given how underwhelming the partner direct mini was.

Re: Nintendo Indie World Showcase Announced For Tuesday 18th August

shazbot

@electrolite77 Does GamePass have retro games on it? Sorry, I haven't played my XbOne in ages, but my understanding is that it's a relatively fixed list of 100 games with new titles periodically rotating in and out? (and obv including all MS first party titles)

That said, I would love a legal Virtual Console on Switch. Have some dreamcast games I miss...

Re: Nintendo Indie World Showcase Announced For Tuesday 18th August

shazbot

@electrolite77 It would be interesting if Sony or Microsoft did it too, actually. I've skipped generations of hardware for real world reasons, and would be very interested in a NSO NES/SNES style solution for XB/PS.

Funnily enough, I think the most likely company to license its titles for that kind of service is Sega, a la Mega Drive classics.

Re: Devil May Cry's Dante Returns As DLC In The Shin Megami Tensei III Remaster

shazbot

@COVIDberry Fair enough - I'm not particularly incensed as the only SMT games I've played were all on the 3DS, and based on its popularity on forums, seems that SMT3 is worth trying for me.

But it didn't click for me that this was something originally included. Lame. Curious to see if there's any other content to justify the price of the pack.
