Dante from Capcom's Devil May Cry series has been confirmed for the upcoming Atlus release, Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne HD Remaster. He's part of the downloadable "Maniax Pack" priced at 980 Yen (about $10 USD) and will be available on release day in Japan (29th October).
The demon hunter originally made his debut as a guest character in the 2004 release of Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne Maniax. In the remaster, selecting “New Game ~Maniax~” from the title screen will allow you to swap out Raidou Kuzunoha from Devil Summoner 2 with Dante. The remaster also adds a "Pierce Effect" to Dante's "Son's Oath" skill.
Shin Megami Tensei III launches in Japan on 29th October and will arrive worldwide next year.

DANTE FROM DEVIL MAY CRY SERIES CONFIRMED
Can somebody explain the meme to me?
JACKPOT! Great to see he's coming back and here's hoping he makes the cut for our version!
now the remastered earn it's "FEATURING DANTE FROM DEVIL MAY CRY SERIES" once again!
@PBandSmelly thank you 🙏
@PBandSmelly The meme wasn’t just from “a game”, it was specifically from the very game featured in this article, Shin Megami Tensei III.
I didn't think ATLUS would do it, but the meme lives again.
Featuring Dante from DLC!
Great to see we're effectively getting both versions, even if Dante is part of a paid DLC.
Take note NiER Remaster!
Absolutely brilliant, did not see this coming. It really will feature Dante from the Devil May Cry series. Hopefully we can add an & Knuckles to that, it is Sega after all.
Can anyone explain to me why people seem to be okay with a PS2 HD Remaster having launch day DLC available?
I personally think it's simply ridiculous.
I'm not interested in this DLC though, I'll just be buying the base SMTIII game as I never played it and really came to love the series.
@COVIDberry ...Wait, this game is going to be $80? Is that USD / CAD / SGD / some other $?
And what's the source for that info? If it's USD or its equivalent that would be really disappointing.
@noutBr If Atlus were honest, the DLC would not be titled "Maniax", but "Lucifer's Call".
@shazbot Most games on release are $80+ in Australia, I assume he's alluding to that metric.
Regardless, a HD remaster of a PS2 title simply shouldn't have any form of DLC if released full price. It should have additional content to incentivise people to double dip rather than emulate the old game or buy it for cheaper elsewhere.
@shazbot Such is the price for most new JRPGs in Canada and Australia.
@COVIDberry @Varkster Thanks guys, thought it was 80 USD (33% higher than normal games). Whew.
Would you be more amenable to the DLC if it wasn't a full price release a la Crysis - $30 / 50% off 'full' price?
@Alpha-2002 he is DLC always does calm down OUR version? its a worldwide release with 6 months apart
@COVIDberry dude the only atlus game you played is tokyo mirage sessions
@Yanina https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/featuring-dante-from-the-devil-may-cry-series
Would you be more amenable to the DLC if it wasn't a full price release a la Crysis - $30 / 50% off 'full' price?
@shazbot Definitely not.
As Varkster says, this is a PS2 game - 18 years old by the global release date! - so partitioning off a legacy portion of the game in this way is completely unacceptable. I purchase physical versions whenever possible, so DLC is even more aggravating for someone like me, who preserves/maintains a significant retro collection.
This is even more infuriating when I recall that Disgaea 5 was my second-ever Switch purchase. Nippon Ichi has been hurting financially, yet they never attempted this gouging on a product that was less than 18 months old.
Okay... I'm just gonna admit that I don't get the meme. 🤦🏻♂️The game did feature Dante from the Devil May Cry series. Maybe in a limited capacity, but he did feature. And Dante was a big deal at that point in time (still is!). So what's the joke? Was it seen as being a bit "desperate"? Actually, I may just have explained it to myself. 😆
@COVIDberry Fair enough - I'm not particularly incensed as the only SMT games I've played were all on the 3DS, and based on its popularity on forums, seems that SMT3 is worth trying for me.
But it didn't click for me that this was something originally included. Lame. Curious to see if there's any other content to justify the price of the pack.
@PBandSmelly Hahaha. Since reading your post, my anger at Atlus has not cooled. And yet I cannot stop visualizing a fight between Funky and Knuckles. (Such a possibility would induce me to buy one of these "Smashing Bros" games everyone speaks of.) As long as Funky can break his board over his opponent's head in sign of victory, I pledge to buy.

@noutBr Well, Atlus still need to pay Capcom for the rights to have Dante in the game. Also, a market economy means you set the price to the level where you make the most money, so apparently they think this is a good business model.
@Ooyah
Knowyourmeme:
Featuring Dante From The Devil May Cry Series is a phrase taken from a seal placed on the cover of the European release of the video game Shin Megami Tensei: Lucifer's Call to promote the addition of Dante, the main protagonist from the Devil May Cry series into the game. The addition of the seal on the European release, which wasn't present on the releases of the game elsewhere, became a target of mock by the gaming community due to Dante's rather trivial part in the game's plot
That's nice, I don't even like Dante but somehow this still makes me excited.
@noutBr
People are happy because they will be able to play with Dante which until this news released seemed impossible...and of course, now they can crack jokes about the whole Dante, and Knuckles and Funky Mode.
In the end, it makes sense. Getting the approval from Capcom for the license costs money, but not everyone is interested in Dante. So it seems fair to pass the cost of having it exclusively to the people who care about Dante. Because of that, it makes perfect sense for this to be optional DLC, why should everyone pay the price for having a Capcom license if not everyone care about him?
@Yomerodes I fully appreciate the need to compensate Capcom. That was the reason I cited a cost of $80, sight unseen. By the same token, the newly-added voice acting does not interest me. Should they partition that off too, so I can refuse to pay for something that disinterests me?
The content has existed for nearly 2 decades. I can purchase a PS2 copy with all the content that is relevant to me - and for less!
@Ooyah Think of it like the predecessor to "NEW FUNKY MODE!" In DKC:Tropical Freeze.
Day one DLC on a remaster. Classic Atlus. This crap is why I stopped buying their games.
EDIT: Just reread it. It's not even new DLC. It's old content they've chopped off just to sell back to us. Get royally knotted, Atlus.
@COVIDberry Typically with Atlus localisations, they're more lenient with DLC. I'd wager our version may have the Dante DLC for free or at least half the cost.
@noutBr Atlus decided to release DLC with Dante immediately because....they want to sell more SMT3 in the West thanks to to his apperance. Like they did 16 years ago.
Dante doesn't belong to Atlus but Capcom, so they included him in DLC to pay some money to Capcom. There is no other explanation.
@COVIDberry then buy old PS2 version, what's your problem. Does anyone forces you to buy Remaster?
I would much rather have Dante in Smash if I’m being honest with myself.
Too bad the game in Europe isn't called "Lucifer's Call" again. "Nocturne" is not that great subtitle. What the hell is "nocturne"? A song.... And "Lucifer's Call" is more accurate because the main protagonist IS CALLED by Lucifer.
@KrupierX The problem here, champ, is that Atlus' business practices are starting to remind me of certain revolting US corporations. The SMT community has a fear that the mainline games will be ignored or de-emphasized by Atlus in favour of Persona and other less "hardcore" games, and so they tend to support Atlus. I would like to support them as well, but not if they engage in this kind of behaviour.
"Nocturne" is not a simply a song. Nocturns are religious readings and prayers offered up in the dark of night. The allusion should not be lost on you if you've played the game.
So basically... "full priced remastered game old enough to be legally considered adult, now with day one overpriced dlc that was a part of the game 18 years ago"? I'm not fluent in Atlus business model speak, especially not in Japanese, but that's what I made of the trailer.
cant wait for this to come our way next year. forget ps5 and what ever they hell they are calling the xbox just give me this
I’m thrilled that Dante will be in the game. I didn’t know who Raidou was and still don’t but I still have my PS2 copy of SMT3 with Dante so that’s the version I want. I kinda figured they wouldn’t leave him out considering what a hit that version was here in the west.
If I’m reading it all right, the original Western PS2 release swapped out Raidou Kuzunoha for Dante. So if Raidou Kuzunoha is present in the base remaster, I can sorta understand Dante as an extra piece of DLC (can argue that the remaster is a remaster of the JP version). Still to have Dante as DLC is blatant money grabbing, especially for a remastering.
@FX102A That is not correct. There were three versions of Nocturne. The first version didn’t have the side story with Dante/Raidou. The second version had Dante (this was the version we got) and the third version replaces Dante with Raidou most likely because the license ran out
@noutBr The most annoying this is that Dante was included in the PS2 version without extra cost. This is even worse than CoD remaster with DLC being sold again (for the same price as it was for the original). This is taking something that was in the original and asking extra for it.
@SmaggTheSmug It does suck, but up until now we believed he wouldn’t be in at all
Well we've finally gotten to a point where remasters are gonna sell us back the game piece by piece.
wow, the actual Dante, not the Jared Leto Dante from DMC
In fairness to the charging for the DLC of a full price HD remake, remember Dante is a CAPCOM character, and Sega no doubt had to pay Capcom for the DMC license again for this release at extra cost. If it featured, say, Knuckles......perhaps they wouldn't need to charge extra. But Capcom being Capcom, you know they charged through the teeth.
Thought I'd clear something up.
Atlus have not removed content to sell it back to us, the version they're doing a remaster of is the third and final Japan only version that has Raidou Kuzunoha from Devil Summoner in place of Dante.
I'm assuming they'd need to renew the license for using Dante again so DLC was the best option to give fans the choice.
@GameOtaku @noutBr The base vanilla game will feature Raidou Kuzunoha from Devil Summoner ( Shin Megami Tensei spin-off). The Devil Summoner series have more investigative tone than the mainline and/or Persona. Raidou really is a awesome protagonist.
Anyway, you all don't need to buy the DLC. Raidou still learns a pierce passive skill ( if you grind 3 level-ups). The game is the same except very few dialogues when you are fighting Raidou/Dante and of course people know who Dante is. That's it.
And what @NEStalgia said is true.
I still wish Atlus port this game for PC. Persona 4 Golden is awesome for people who enjoy the social stuff, but I am prefer fusion, battle mechanics and forging your own path more.
@KrupierX to be honest I like Nocturne way better than Lucifer's Call, it's less generic and certainly less "mid-noughties edginess".
@clvr Lucifer's Call is a bit on the nose compared to Nocturne.
@Orpheus79V exactly, 100% agreed.
I prefer subtlety personally.
Adding Dante feels right. The game is pretty much an RPG for Devil May Cry now.
@Alex90
I still prefer Dante. I just think he is an interesting choice for a crossover character and he definitely fits the narrative. For many of us the Dante version was the first exposure to SMT.
I might have picked this up if they had released it earlier in the Switch's life. But JRPG's take me forever to play through so there's now way I'm buying this with SMT V coming several months later.
I feel iffy on the DLC practice. But I will allow in this case that it may have cost them a pretty penny to ink this deal.
Dante wasn't in the original Nocturne. He was in the director's cut release, Maniax (hence the name of this DLC). The Maniax version just so happens to be the version that was released in the west. There was actually ANOTHER version after that - this is the version that the upcoming port is based on. Presumably due to rights timing out, Dante was replaced with Raidou (as Atlus owns that character). It is interesting discussing Nocturne all these years in fan circles. Raidou is treated as the "canon" edition, despite most western players never touching that version of the game.
All that said, I would assume that in order to get Dante back in here, they needed to ink a new deal with Capcom for the new consoles. They were able to sell it on PS3 as a PS2 classic with Dante, but a whole new release would require new negotiations. The DLC route may simply be to recoup those costs? One could also argue that it is to keep the base game's cost low, for those who don't care for Dante. As I said above, a lot of fans in the community seem to prefer the Raidou version, or at least want to experience that version since they have already played the Dante version.
