Can someone name all the characters in the drawing for me? Joanna Dark, Banjo & Kazooie, Conker and one of the Pin~atas from Viva Pin~ata.... Is Kameo the flying lady? and Spinal on drums? (Don't remember his jacket)
@diegoarthur I think the problem is that this is true of doctors too. Because of the pay scale for doctors in developed countries, a disproportionate number of developing country doctors (my parents, for example) leave their countries of origin for the West and the riches it promises.
There's a known phrase for this and brain drain has been an issue in professional fields for literally a century in developing countries. Your desire can't increase the size of a market.
As @Agriculture said, survivorship-bias makes everyone think they'll make it in their chosen field, but perhaps they would have been better served developing skills in a field to which they're better suited. That said, it's a (relatively) free world, and if they want to try, by all means, but how many millions of kids do you think are out there who didn't make the 450-odd NBA slots, but would have been amazing engineers, teachers, etc. If they applied that level of discipline to other fields that could actually succeed at?
@Severian I lived off of downloaded (not streamed) video content. Had multiple portable hard drives for exactly this reason, same reason with the Switch I keep 3 microSDs with all the games I own downloaded and patched.
@Severian I moved overseas mid-Wii generation and basically didn't buy new games until landing back in a developed country ten years later. Also loving the broad selection of software from multiple hardware generations on the Switch.
@JimmySpades The hard truth is the world doesn't owe you a livelihood doing things you like. The world doesn't owe anyone anything. You don't have to like it. Doesn't make it not true.
And based on the tone of your response, clearly not a popular message and not likely to get anymore popular.
@Agriculture someone has to speak the hard truths. On topic, this looks interesting, though I wish more indies would take risks either in terms of art style (MadWorld, anyone?) or gameplay mechanics.
For all the people on here that owned a Wii U and bought Game X you would have thought the Wii U sold 150 million units, and shipped 1 billion pieces of software.
Thank you! Picked this up day 1, and put it back down because the gyro sensitivity was so low. Time to pick it back up...after finishing DOOM again.
@PlayedNSlayed Assuming you haven't finished them / played them on other consoles, just finished Wolfenstein 2 and Youngblood (in co-op). Can recommend both, though the gunplay in DOOM is the best of the three.
I know a lot of people have said they found Braid boring, but I personally loved the time manipulation mechanic. It was very well done (much better than MS' Blinx The Time Sweeper).
That said, finding out after the fact there were secrets it was literally impossible for me to get without a full replay, and Jonathan Blow's interviews alluding to the game being some sort of weird allegory about nukes was off-putting. Would be really curious if that's part of the commentary here. Not-teenage me is interested in hearing from the source.
@westman98 Is that true? the article says Switch's best-sellers, not Nintendo-published Switch best-sellers. EDIT: Reading fail.
Although I would be very-curious about a third-party-only Switch best-seller list. If I recall correctly, there's a couple multi-plat titles where the devs said the Switch version was their best seller, like Bloodstained, IIRC?
@mariomaster96 It's not my flavour either, but it's classic blue ocean. Draw in non-traditional (non-'core') gamers. Just read r/nintendoSwitch/ and you'll see so many anecdotes of people who scooped it, and their spouse/kids/neighbor got hooked and they ended up having to buy another system and another copy of the game.
Kinda nuts, and again, not my jams, but glad it's working out. Would much rather have people playing games together than trying to set each other on fire in real life.
@ninoishi I think it would be different if it were a team that had proven incapable of delivering good quality product, or an unknown IP. The Bayonetta games, and 2 in particular, are some of the most critical acclaimed action games out there, and they've delivered high quality titles twice.
They don't want to dilute their IP with substandard product, and they've judged the quality of their titles status for delivery internally very well. As long as what's released is moderately well reviewed, it'll probably print money.
I mean, I recently discovered my wife LOVES fighting games...so I might pick it up, but not as a backer. I'd rather pay moderately more for a product in hand.
Rogue-like rhythm FPS with procedurally-generated levels and inter-run persistent upgrades? Only flavor-of-the-month thing they're missing is...no, wait...they got them all.
Seriously though, would give this a shot on switch, or if I ever upgrade my PC.
@nessisonett Agreed. I was blown away by the realization last month that he's 67. Seems like his design philosophy is calcifying around characters he created and (understandably) loves. Also, how can he suggest it's 'fine without a story'?
Enjoying Origami King, so it seems like the team overall did a good job, but part of the fun from previous Paper Mario games is the unique take on on classic Mario IP. Goombella anyone?!
Definitely enjoying the game. In sales terms, however, even if 25% of the game's sales were digital it immediately is vying for 3rd best launch all time, and with the COVID situation in Japan, I suspect it's more towards the 100% number, than the 25% number. I have a strong feeling that this was in fact the best 1st week for a Paper Mario game, in terms of sales.
@kickerofelves true, but generally it's better for games that have been out a while. For new releases there's often no entries, or people who are speedrunning.
(To be clear, I don't mean actually speed running, just trying to get through the game as fast as possible)
@datamonkey Relative to Sony and MicroSoft, however, they have less resources. Just from publicly disclosed data, Nintendo would be a moderately sized division at either of the other two companies.
That said, I think there's a confluence of factors coming into play here. Japan has had an up-and-down policy re: staying at home which I'm sure had a stop-start effect on development, but also as a less technology-focused company I suspect their business processes were also geared towards in-person collaboration, so the transition to remote working was more disruptive than at their competitors.
Finally, I think marketing has been much lower down their priority list than development. They're been making money hand over fist this year, and Switch is selling like hotcakes. They don't actually need to fight for walletshare right now, they just need to preserve mindshare going into the holiday season.
As long as products are released in the coming months, shareholders will be happy, and let's be honest - does anyone really think that Nintendo has/had NOTHING planned for 2H 2020? @boredlizard?
@Grandiajet what was Sega's XBOX exclusive at the start of that generation? I remember it was a cel shaded alien blasting third person shooter with platforming elements that looked great, but had supposedly janky controls. Never played it, but I remember that as a one off IP. They could include that too
@kickerofelves Love JSR & JGR, but never heard of Hover. Looks a bit dead, and patchy Switch performance. That said, happy to overlook if it's fun. Recommended?
@madmatt213 Yeah, because so many server farms for SE Asia are here in SG, and they're rolling out country wide 5G over the next year or so, I'm hoping it runs well locally, but not available yet.
@madmatt213 ...Wait, why? Everything I've heard about Stadia is that it sucks / was DoA. Not in the US, so can't try it, but is there a reason it would be your preferred 'platform' for this?
@ancientlii advocating personal responsibility on the internet?! Outrageous.
What we need is a poorly thought out and equally poorly implemented one-size-fits-all solution that drives people to other sites without these onerous conditions for contributors.
... Or, we could recognize that the problem is limited to a small number of titles that generate a lot of heat and coverage, while most games are reviewed relatively fairly by non professionals... Like most articles are written by hobbyists on Wikipedia, with a small number of articles on controversial topics generating a lot of heat and coverage...
@rosenband I think this would hurt Indies the most. High profile triple AAA stuff has tons of media, but for the niche stuff sometimes all you can find is a single user score on metacritic. Ban that, and I, and several people I know, will be less likely to splash on Indies, especially with some of the shovelware out there. Not sure it's a solvable problem, tbh
I've enjoyed Wolfenstein Youngblood's 'buddy pass' system, playing with my brother on another continent, so I will probably still pick this up if the price is right. Wish more games supported that model of play, though local would have been nice too. Thankfully doesn't damage my use case
@ATaco I mean, GameCube version requires GameCube, 4 gbas and 4 connection cables, doesn't it? Or can you local coop with regular controllers? Never played, so don't know.
@Giygas_95 Sorry, I can't speak to that. Haven't played any other FE entries, but for a complete newbie it was a lot of fun, and the storypathing was super interesting. That said, considering my first run was close to 100 hours, it's daunting to consider replaying 3+ times to see all the story outcomes...
@Wexter The battle system in Shadows of Adam has auto-replenishing 'mana' (AP) encouraging you to use special attacks constantly with little penalty. It's probably the most I've used specials in a JRPG ever, as well as items. Made for much more interesting core gameplay loop, and I actually (think) I've seen all the abilities in action. In fact, some bosses (particularly sidequest) require you to stack buffs and debuffs because they auto-heal so much.
@Wexter I've put in 60 hours into DQ11, and then I needed a break because the battles were so grindy and dull. (Part of the reason I'm really looking forward to this)
So as a palate-cleanser, in the last 2 weeks I've put serious hours into Bug Fables and Shadow of Adam, both highly recommended. They both make the core gameplay loop fun. Hoping to finish SoA today.
@Giygas_95 You're right, deku deals confirms it hasn't ever been on sale, but highly recommended. It's a weirdo pastiche of tactical RPG, visual novel and Hogwarts.
Probably going to pick Paper Mario up on Friday, too. Just gotta make room on the ol' SD card.
Living in SE Asia, I'm surprised how popular this style of game is. Pre-COVID saw a guy on a crowded subway wearing a headset and calling out activities to his team while playing this style of game.
It's not my style in the slightest, but I'm sure it'll go over gangbusters in the region on the license alone. Then, with the muscle of TenCent behind it, PRC will let it through its strict game control board meaning it'll have 100 million players by this time next year...

Re: Devil May Cry's Dante Returns As DLC In Shin Megami Tensei III
@COVIDberry @Varkster Thanks guys, thought it was 80 USD (33% higher than normal games). Whew.
Would you be more amenable to the DLC if it wasn't a full price release a la Crysis - $30 / 50% off 'full' price?
Re: Devil May Cry's Dante Returns As DLC In Shin Megami Tensei III
@COVIDberry ...Wait, this game is going to be $80? Is that USD / CAD / SGD / some other $?
And what's the source for that info? If it's USD or its equivalent that would be really disappointing.
