Re: Industry Tributes Pour In As Fans Mourn Manga Legend Akira Toriyama

russell-marlow

Bro, no. Not him, not at the age of 68.

He could've still been around for two more decades. I've seen other big creators live longer because they've had access to better health care resources. But man, him not appearing publicly really makes this all the more sad because we've never seen him be around or give any in-person interviews or interact with fans.

I can imagine it must be really terrible for the health of Japanese manga authors when you hear about the absolutely stressful jobs they have working tirelessly to finish their books under a strict deadline by publishers. Japanese work culture in general must really do a number on a person's health, knowing it will definitely compromise one's life expectancy.

Hearing how the Yu-Gi-Oh creator, Kazuki Takahashi, passed away two years ago and now Toriyama, really feels terrible knowing we've lost some very important legends in the manga entertainment industry due to unforeseen and uncontrollable circumstances they were in.

But as always, we will never forget the impact they had on us and the industry as a whole. They influenced all different types of media with their awe-inspiring stories filled with depth defying action, suspenseful character driven narratives, and dramatic moments.

So thank you for everything both from Mr. Toyriyama and Takahashi for influencing all our creative en devours and shaping entertainment as a whole. R.I.P. to both the finest Mangaka legends.

Re: UK Charts: Suicide Squad Kills The Competition Despite Mixed Reception

@DripDropCop146 Unless he knows anyone or has an agent, I don't think we'll know...

He's had dozens upon dozens of roles playing Batman in different media and I imagine this would've been just another pay check for him, but knowing his condition, I think he put his heart and soul into it thinking it would please his fans.

He was unfortunately at the mercy of the writers for this game, Batman's ultimate fate and the end is something I don't think he was okay with but I imagine he did it anyway because he thought it would be his final send off not knowing if it was good or not. I don't think anyone wanted to tell him the bad news unless someone over at Rocksteady knows but won't willing disclose it due to NDA's. We might not know for several years, honestly. Not until that NDA expires.

Re: UK Charts: Suicide Squad Kills The Competition Despite Mixed Reception

Also, despite the high numbers in people buying this game during launch, others have pointed out how similar games like Avengers initially also did well during launch. However, player numbers according to Steam Charts peaked around 26,000 players before dropping off and the developers deeming the game a failure before ultimately shutting it down permanently.

Suicide Squad's numbers as of now hover around 13,000+ on Steam charts, and if we consider how much money was poured into making this game and marketing it... I feel this game has a very slim chance of making a return on investment, if not being able to break even. Especially since this game has gotten worse reception and fan feedback since Marvel's Avengers. Only time will tell for certain...

Re: UK Charts: Suicide Squad Kills The Competition Despite Mixed Reception

I remember when the Saints Row reboot was high up in the charts for best sellers before eventually dropping off pretty hard later on.

That's the thing with these big triple A releases, they do pretty well early on but when there are other games releasing along the year to compete for everyone's attention, and the game itself has few legs to stand on when it comes to the rule of diminishing returns because of the repetitive aspect of it's gameplay loop, players are quickly going to abandon this game once they've they realize how they've experienced everything there is to offer.

They will move on to the next big game immediately and no amount of content updates from the developers is going to fix what good will that has been damaged to Rocksteady's fan community due to the poor reception of this game and how they treated their beloved characters. It's not just that they killed the Justice League, but how they went about doing it and the way Batman was unceremoniously killed off without any sort grand speech or anything at all while he gets disrespected by Harley. The lamest way to kill off a beloved character.

Re: Review: Batman: Arkham Trilogy (Switch) - Two Solid Ports, One Technical Disaster

russell-marlow

@SMUGSLOTH69 Be aware that each of these games have their own individual issues when trying to play them on Steam Deck.

For example, you need to download a compatibility program called "Proton GE" in order to run Arkham Asylum. Then you might need to do the same for City but that game tends to crash after an hour of play time and I have read that there's no solution to fix this so far. The same thing can happen to Asylum after playing for a while, but that hasn't stopped me from 100% the game.

Origins might have the same issues as City, but I think my issue is that I have memory leaks from other installed programs on my Deck.

Arkham Knight is pretty much the only Steam Deck Verified game out of all of them that runs well out of the box.

If you need anymore pointers on how run each of these games or other Steam games on Deck, try looking into ProtonDB.

Re: The Game Awards GOTY For 2023 Is Baldur's Gate 3

@Arawn93 Am I PS users now all of a sudden??
I don't even own a PS5 but go on then...

At the very least I can say that Spider-Man 2's open world has been enhanced and changed since the first game. Improved graphics, better story, and definitely no lower frame rates or resolution unlike TOTK.

For a game that introduced voice acting in BOTW, they sure don't do much with it besides using it for exposition and minor character moments. Older Zelda games had no voice acting, yet these newer Zelda games still go through the same plot beats. They could remove the voices and it wouldn't change much.

Re: Sega Announces New Games In Development For Classic Franchises

russell-marlow

I really want to know who's making that Streets of Rage game.
It doesn't look like Dotemu is making it this time which has me concerned. It looks like it's in the style of those other Sega games shown off in this trailer which do look like mobile games and that's part of the reason I'm cautiously optimistic about this.

Re: The Game Awards GOTY For 2023 Is Baldur's Gate 3

russell-marlow

@Arawn93 When it came to story, yeah it definitely was.

Last game felt more focused while this one felt like those Spider-Man movies that had too many villains and were trying to rush through having character arcs to get to the climax. Completely all over the place. Still a good game, though. But I'm curious how the next game will be? If it's going to drop Peter in favor of Miles, then I'll lose interest immediately.

Insomniac Spider-Man games are great and all. But I'm not really a fan of the focus on themes of activism they've been putting into these games recently and there doesn't seem to be more interpersonal stories going on between Peter and his larger cast of friends/supporting characters.

Re: The Game Awards GOTY For 2023 Is Baldur's Gate 3

russell-marlow

Yep, sounds about right. No way Zelda is winning game of the year twice after reusing the same open world but with minor changes. Even Majora's Mask, a sequel to Ocarina of Time, had a drastically different overworld which felt new to explore.

But of course, am betting Nintendo Life users will heavily disagree.

Re: Nintendo Reminds Fans Zelda Is Up For Nomination At This Year's Game Awards

russell-marlow

No way this game deserves Game of the Year award after Breath of the Wild already won in 2017 and Tears already re-uses the same features as the previous game. Only difference is you get to build a bunch of contraptions to traverse mostly the same world and find more parts to explore the world and repeat the same gameplay loop as the previous game.

If any game deserves praise for breaking new ground it should be Baldur's Gate 3 because it has a ton of features and is actually a new game worth $70. Just don't tell Nintendo fanboys that since they will defend any Zelda game to high heaven and call it a 10/10 no matter what.

Re: Nintendo Releases Update For Switch (Version 17.0.0), Here Are The Details

russell-marlow

@Sisilly_G Not sure why Nintendo is ignoring the success of the 3DS with many of the home menu themes and such.

You'd think they fired the person in charge of adding all those customization options that people liked on the 3DS just as they transitioned over to the new home console. While Nintendo not to recently has hired another new guy to design for the Switch's UI and probably was the same person that added that compressed NSO logo in the Switch home menu that didn't fit aesthetically.

Re: Review: Super Mario RPG - A Timeless Classic Returns In A Remake Done Right

russell-marlow

Why doesn't this game have a "hard" mode?

Seems Nintendo must've mandated that the game be easy for average players, but if there's less of a challenge then there's less incentive for replay ability. Nintendo looks to have been going through this trend with recent Paper Mario games and I fear Thousand Year Door Remake will have a lack of challenge and won't be as normally difficult as the original.

Re: Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 Resolution & Frame Rate Chart Released

russell-marlow

@ArcticEcho There's a level of grounded-ness that the Metal Gear series has up to a certain extent. It doesn't mean ever game is like Metal Gear Rising. Snake can't do what Raiden does in that game.

And as far as logic is concerned, it's a mix of some logic mixed in with the absurd, but there's at least a normal balance sometimes. This isn't Smash Bros. where Snake can just do ridiculous actions.

Re: Round Up: Realms Deep 2023 - Every Game Coming To Nintendo Switch

russell-marlow

@Stamina_Wheel Really?
Well that's news too me. If anything I hear they must be annoyed at all comments they must be getting and just decided not to say anything. Because I also would be annoyed at these SJW-type folks who spout wild stuff.

Either way, 3D Realms did eventually donate money to LGBTQ+ organizations, so I'll take that as a nice gesture for this knee-jerk reaction everyone had.

But the way everyone hyperbolizes this non-controversy, it's their own stance and that doesn't mean we have to agree with them on their views. Either way, more harassment doesn't bring anything good and I judge folks based on their actions and not on their facetious comments. Do with that however you will, it takes a mature individual to just ignore things and move on.

Don't like someone/something, then just ignore it. It's like Hogwarts Legacy all over again.

Re: Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 Resolution & Frame Rate Chart Released

russell-marlow

@SwitchForce I'm pretty sure CDPR was given a bigger budget from the success of their flagship franchise then how disconnected Konami is when making these enhanced ports. I'm sure there's a hierarchy in place in the company that limits their scope when it comes to the budget and time necessary to make this. Not saying it's low quality collection, but could've been better.

It's a weird trend I see with Japanese developers were they don't go out of their way to make better remasters for these old games like most Western developers do with the likes of these classic FPS remasters and Tomb Raider, and sometimes you get stuff like Sonic Origins and Mario 3D All Stars, where they do the bare minimum.
