I’m one of those “month subscribers” 😛. And the only reason I got it was to fulfill all the challenges in Smash.
The subscription will lapse in a few days and I’m more than happy to let it go. (Though I did have some great online battles... and some that were absolutely broken)
As mentioned by @nagash this game was made by experimental animator David O’ Reilly, who’s pretty famous in the animation world for his style and experimentation. He even directed an episode of Adventure Time (that seemed to confuse the fan base quite a bit 😏).
Being a fan of his I downloaded the game immediately, and was at first a bit underwhelmed, but the game was a good, long, slow burn. At one point I put it on autoplay, zoned out and enjoyed it even more as a spectator.
The Alan Watts lectures in particular are what take the game to a really special level.
@Cobalt A matter of optimization?? “Eye of a developer?” 🤦🏼♂️Normally I sit quietly on the sidelines, but I had to pipe in on at this faux authoritative statement. I’ve had a hand in the development as a modeler and texture artist on a few indie games and you’re trying to say this a performance choice?? A matter of polygons?! Your elitism would only partially reek if you actually knew what you were talking about, but your comment this time is completely revealing.
Whew! 😅 Pre-loaded this based off some past talk that made the game sound intriguing. Glad it’s solid, and shocked that it’s 20+ hours! (Though I do hope the hitbox issue gets squared away.)
Hope Mega Man 11's numbers pick up. Capcom did everything right with this iteration and I'd love to see the series get back to a near-annual release schedule.
The Wii U reeked of arrogance to me. Fresh off the heels of the Wii’s mega success they were content with a half-formed innovation and their up-tight licensing rules. The interface was convoluted and every 1st party game shoe-horned the tablet controls into places they didn’t belong.
I’m kind of glad they got knocked off their cloud a bit because it’s birthed a better system and company on most every front.
Just played through it and I feel more confident about purchasing it come October. I like the Double-Gear system, and unlike a lot of polygonal 2D platformers this one controls tight and snappy. Also the boss fight was far more interesting than the classic jump-around showdown.
Guys, the effort/time/budget it takes to give us these li’l freebies is nothing compared to the development of even a portion of a single kingdom. There is no trade-off. We might as well get used to this rhythm at least until the end of the year.
It’s a fun little bonus, and you have a reason to play balloon world for half an hour if you want. 🤷🏼♂️
@Damo and speaking of cart prices, I’ve always thought that would make an interesting article “what do publishers have to pay per size and unit for a cartridge?” (I’m also curious about Nintendo’s royalty rates). Is this stuff openly discussed among publishers?
Good! I just want to experience the levels and bosses and glean the traits and quality of each game. If I'm going to see all of the content across 8 different titles there's no way that I'm going to trial-and-error my way through that much content for hours and hours.
I used to have pride about refusing such modes but I threw that pride out the window a few years ago and have enjoyed games much more since because of it.
They haven’t confirmed any dates, but I would think they wouldn’t do it until the final DLC is released, so all the content’s on cartridge. Just speculation though, I really don’t know 🤷♂️@KentaD
Looks solid— but on a matter of taste I gotta say those French lads nailed the art style so perfectly with Dragon’s Trap that this feels a bit gaudy by comparison.
Yours is one of the most sensible comments on the topic. The engine and mechanics are already so solid that to start over on much of it would be wasted time. The only uphill battle will be convincing the insistent that a new game is new despite using the very functional mechanics (and character models) of the past @ShadJV
All fine and good , but I also read some info on another game site the other day about how the new president wants to shift to a larger focus on mobile gaming-- it made me sight gag and shook my trust a bit in Furukawa.
I believe the problem was more rampant than “standard new hardware hiccups”. It happened to me and the other two Switch owners I know. Thought I could live with it, but finally sent it in and the improvement was five fold.
Nintendo’s track record has been so solid it still shocks me how touchy a state the joy cons were released in.
@thesilverbrick I admit, as a collector, I too am in a bit of conundrum with the transient nature of Labo. Heck, to use it you basically have to break up the "collectible" aspect of it, and to personalize it you really gotta mess it up. But that conundrum has more to do with the format of the product than the pricing.
For what the package includes (and I'm talking the variety kit here) I think $70 is reasonable, and I would estimate Nintendo makes a significantly smaller profit on it than a normal $60 game.
In the case of Labo I think its controversial format is too often downgraded because of the material, despite some very genius designs that couldn't be feasible in another medium.
All that being said, always enjoy your level-headed comments, as they're often some of the better dialogue around here.
With every Labo article another pointless price debate. I'm a person of the 80's and I remember a TV "expose" that revealed NES carts only cost $4-$7 to produce--and they had the nerve to charge $50! What that 'expose' didn't take into account, and what people continue to struggle with is that it's not just raw material production costs, but R & D, the software, shipping---and craziest of all, some profit!
Labo's only $10 more than a normal game--what's so confusing about the price?!
I’m a bit ignorant of certain games until they show up in the Nintendo periphery, and can’t believe a game this beautiful had almost slipped under my radar until now.
The real intrigue for me is that final design. It looks like a cardboard Gameboy slip to hold the Switch! Definitely some potentially interesting ideas in that.
I’m intrigued. Less and less these days do I need my games to be “all encompassing” and am often content to enjoy a game for its particular standout trait: narrative, design, gameplay, etc.
Though occasionally we get a Zelda, which checks all the boxes. 😎
With the way they initially worded it in the announcement I thought they might actually try and sell ‘em for $8 a pop. So two collections is fine by me. It’s only a semi-gouge. 😛

Re: A Trio Of Classic Resident Evil Games Is Coming To Switch This May
As long as they don’t charge over $20 a pop I’m in!
Re: Hollow Knight: Silksong Is Coming To Nintendo Switch As A Console Exclusive
How???! How are they this far along with a sequel. How do they make such quality with such speed?! I’m equal parts impressed and baffled!

Wait—what?! Yes please! 🤠
Re: Masahiro Sakurai Thanks Fans For Playing The Super Smash Bros. Series Over The Past 20 Years

This game’s animation really is exceptional. If it plays well I’m all in.
Re: Switch Couch Co-Op Game Bouncy Bob Is Now On Sale At 97% Off, Available For Just $0.14
I take pride in my game menu screen being a tight collection, so no price will tempt me on these kind of games.

Alex’s reviews are the only ones I read thoroughly instead of skim. The wordings and catch phrases crack me up. (Mighty fine review too)
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (September 8th)
Hyper Light Drifter! After anticipating this game for so long it’s a joy to finally jump in.
Surprised it’s not mentioned more around here. It deserves the love 🤠
Re: Review: Hyper Light Drifter: Special Edition (Switch eShop)
Got it yesterday, and about 4 hours into it now. After the 1st hour knew the money was well spent. This game’s the real deal!

Make it nice n' shiny with an art book and I'll gladly buy it again.
Re: Sumo Digital's Snake Pass Is Receiving A Physical Makeover On Switch
I really liked this game. It took a bit, but once it clicked I really dug the slow and tactful tone of it.
The soundtrack, even today, is a regular accompaniment to my work and drawing sessions.

That Fox figure—Whoof! If the toy aspect is a selling point, that figure’s quality has me running in the opposite direction.

Re: The First Two Sega AGES Titles Are Launching On Switch Next Month
I want to be excited, but this format irritates me until they start digging into anything at least semi-obscure. Dreamcast, Arcade, etc.
The cynical side of me hopes $8.00 Sonic 1 doesn’t break into the eshop top 30 on principal.

Thanks! @Mr_Pepperami
Re: Review: Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 (Switch eShop)
Question: I downloaded this. Am enjoying it okay—but! Is there any way to go back to the top menu screen after choosing one of the games?!
It seems like a ridiculous possible oversight, but all I can do is return to the title screen of the selected game! Tell me I’m missing something 🤯
Edit: Solved. I had to scroll down for a single line of text. >blush<

@Alcovitch $15?.... for 6 games. With top-notch emulation. And extra features. Feels legit to me.

Re: Review: Nintendo Labo: Toy-Con 02 - Robot Kit (Switch)
@DockEllisD Interesting stat. Considering the size of Japanese apartments and lack of space, unfortunately I can’t see those numbers bouncing back.

Re: Snake Pass Is Going For Speedrunning Gold With Its New Arcade Mode Update
Whoops. Made the mistake of holding some anticipation for this update that they’ve been touting for months.
Really enjoyed the base game, but trying to grab a bunch of tchotchkes on a speed run is counterintuitive to what made the game enjoyable for me.
Anyhoo. Welcome back original icon.
Re: Video: Don't Cry Over these Top Ten Worst Mario Games
