Japanese sales figures are now in for the week of 1st - 7th October, revealing that Super Mario Party managed to jump right to the top of the charts with a very impressive sales total indeed.
The moustachioed plumber's latest outing generated 142,868 sales in its opening weekend. Of course, the game only arrived in stores on 5th October (with these figures only being counted until the 7th), and this data only covers physical sales, so that number would be significantly higher if digital sales were also shared.
Elsewhere, Mega Man 11 sold 14,650 copies on Switch and 12,052 on PlayStation 4, shooting the Switch version slightly above its counterpart into fourth place.
Here's a look at the top 20 (first numbers are this week's sales, followed by total sales in brackets):

Wow PlayStation sales took a slight dip this week.
Good sales numbers. No major uptick in system sales though. Guess it really will be down to Pokemon and smash to try to get anywhere near those estimates.
I'd say that's well deserved. This is the first good Mario Party game in AGES.
Breaking News: Mass hysteria as new natural disaster hits Japan. Scientists have diagnosed this epidemic as "Mario Party Fever".
izaMario number 1
Well, writing is on the Wall. SpiderMan pretty much matched SMP on day 1 and Assassin Creed posted right up there . The "West" is coming 😎
Also, lets focus on Mega Man 11 numbers... lets ignore those other Orochi4, Fifa and Valkyria 4 on Switch numbers 🙄😏
Augh... where is Cold Steel 3 US launch. Japan is at 4 already.
This is Mario power!! Nice sales for Megaman 11 switch too.
awesome game, having a blast with it.
I hope Mario Party continues to sell well so that Nintendo knows not to stick us all in a car together. Mario Party is about ruining friendships, and that's how we like it.
@GrailUK A PS4 Pro price drop has just been announced to take effect from Oct 12th so I'd imagine a lot of people are holding out until then.
@MoonKnight7 Mario Party Dice assist trophy for Smash! Everyone stands still, Master Hand rolls a huge die, then everyone gets the amount of damage dealt to the based on the landing number x 10.
Keeps the friendships in tatters.
Glad to see decent third party presence on Switch as well. Sure none of those multiplats are selling as well on Switch as they are on PS4 (Orochi, Fifa, Valkyria, DBFZ) but then again those games already have fanbases more on Sony platforms than Nintendo, so the fact that they charted at all is good news.
That said, disappointed that Work x Work, the new game from a developer of Mother 3, didn't even make the top 20. I know it's more of a digital game, but from the little bits of it I've seen it looks promising and I hope it gets localized so it can get a second chance.
@ilikeike orochi numbers are still a bad surprise. They launched on the same day, are feature complete and thanks to Fire Emblem warriors and Hyrule Warriors, musou games have a fan base on Nintendo systems.
@HobbitGamer
Haha, you may be on to something there.
Damn thats pretty much half the lifetime sales of Spiderman
@Rob3008 Ah. Makes sense. Nintendo are slowly revving up 2019.
@tech7 I understand that, but considering that the last few non-Nintendo-spinoff Warriors games hardly even charted on Switch, I'm glad that Orochi at least managed to break 30k on Switch. It'll show Koei that there's still a market for their multiplats on Switch. Not as large as their Sony fanbase obviously, but large enough to be worth the expense.
Why are Xbox sales so high (very relatively speaking) this week? I don’t believe I’ve ever seen them this high since I’ve read these weekly sales updates.
Wow Xbox be killin' it
Hope Mega Man 11's numbers pick up. Capcom did everything right with this iteration and I'd love to see the series get back to a near-annual release schedule.
16) [NSW] Sumikko Gurashi: Atsumare! Sumikko Town (Nippon Columbia, 10/04/18) – 5,221 (New)
Wow, Sumikko Gurashi : Atsumare Sumikko Town has been released.
@ilikeike
Work x Work has been released ?!
Great to see Switch beat out PS4 for Megaman sales.... LOL take that Sony sucks to be you!! XD
@Anti-Matter Yes, it released on October 4. Only in Japan though, and there hasn't be any confirmation of localization yet.
Shouldn't be surprising Super Mario Party did so well there, and I bet will continue to do well. Japan loves minigame collections after all - Wii Party U and 1-2-Switch both sold very very well there, for instance.
Its nice that we can always rely on Japan to make us feel better about being beaten by Fifa, CoD, Etc every week everywhere else!
Yooka layley is on sale on switch for £26 and £10 on steam 🤔. If anyone cares.
I am sure that Sony fan people on this site like the fact that ps4 games took six out of the top 10 in Japan.
@Agramonte Valk 4 is a late port, FIFA18 started low on Switch but at the end sold more than the PS4 version (on Japan) and I bet FIFA19 will be the same. Now, Orochi's numbers aren't great but honestly all depends on expectations and how much money they put on Switch versions of games, that I bet is less money than for the more powerful consoles. So far KOEI has been happy hence they continue support.

The numbers aren't record-breaking or anything, but it's good to see Mario Party sales bounce back after the last few entries put up some ridiculously low numbers. Legs will be very important for a game like this as we enter the holiday season.
First-party Nintendo title featuring Mario sells well. More at 11.
Valkyria 4 selling poorly doesn't surprise me, as it seems like late ports usually suffer in Japan. Warriors Orochi 4 posted pretty pitiful numbers in comparison to the PS4 version, though.
Only the hardware sales really interest me anymore. What's the point of a sales chart that ignores digital? Seems like a leftover from a bygone era.
I might be among the people who prefer physical, but I am not foolish enough to discount all digital sales.
That’s some good numbers!
I’m still on the fence about this game. I can see myself playing it when friends are over, but otherwise it would probably just stay on the shelf.
That number seems small. Is this considered a success?
@whanvee In Japan yes. Many game released there can never reach that number.
OMG XBOX gonna take over Japan! Their sales number skyrocked by 2400%!! seems Japan will be a Xbox country... (ironie)
@MsJubilee cool, that's good to know. I'm just used to seeing headlines of a million or more copies sold on release date. I found the number a bit lacking in comparison. Good to know I was wrong.
@whanvee
Mario Party 8 and DS are the only Mario Party game's that have sold over 1 million copies in Japan. No Mario Party game has come remotely close to 1 million copies at launch in Japan.
@westman98 I meant with video games in general, not specifically Mario Party.
@whanvee
The only games that regularly sell 1+ million copies at launch in Japan alone are Pokemon, Dragon Quest, and Monster Hunter. Final Fantasy used to sell that much, but not anymore.
Smash Bros Ultimate will likely achieve that feat come December.
