If you were one of the backers of the successful ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove Kickstarter campaign, unfortunately it seems you are going to have to wait a little bit longer to get your grubby mitts on the game.
Here's the latest statement from Humanature explaining a delay into 2018:
Greg here with a quickie update to keep you all posted. First, my apologies - I know it's been a while since we've given an update to all you backers. Thank you all for your patience and understanding. I know you want to know, "when do we get the game!?"
We tried super hard to get ToeJam and Earl: Back in the Groove out in 2017. Game development is an inexact science and it's our priority to deliver the best, most solid game we can. To get the game across the finish line we need to push into 2018, but rest assured we are working our butts off and you guys are going to get an awesome game.
Thanks for the continued support and keeping the faith! We're working so hard over here and will have additional updates over the coming weeks and months.
As Miyamoto-san once said, "a delayed game is eventually good, a bad game is bad forever", so hopefully this means Kickstarter backers will be rewarded for their patience. Let us know if you backed the campaign and what you think about this delay with a comment below.

Oh well. Better it be late and unpolished then early and a hot mess.
I never backed the game but as it's one of my childhood games, I'm curious to see how it turns out.
"a delayed game is eventually good, a bad game is bad forever" was so true until Mighty No 9 came along.
I feel bad. I honestly didn't know this was a thing. More to look forward next year!
This reminds me that we never got that Kickstarter game from Omocat called Omori (a horror rpg) that was supposed to come to the 3DS.
I hope they consider moving it to the Switch.
That's okay, I never cared for the original. In my opinion, it's highly overrated.
That's fine, as there are already far more games that have released this year than I have time to play. Definitely looking forward to playing it at launch, though!
@FragRed And Yooka Laylee at this rate.
I figured this would happen. It just seemed like things have been moving along pretty slowly, but I'm glad they're taking their time. I also really like how they went about announcing the delay in that trailer, heh.
I had no idea there even was a kickstarter. Is it a topdown like the original? Or a platformer like the second game? I always preferred Panic on Funkotron personally.
Oh well, we'll always have that unreleased Dreamcast beta of Toejam and Earl 3 that is readily available all over the net and plays in both emulators and actual Dreamcasts:
I want this game. I played the first one so much in the 90s, crazy fun game!
How did I miss this one? I love the original game back on the Genesis, and I would love to play a new installment. Hopefully it turns out all right.
@ThanosReXXX Or you can just play the finished game on Xbox.
@Oscarzxn No, that's not the same, contrary to what you appear to think. The guy doing the video also explicitly mentions this at the start of the playthrough. The beta was WAY more in the spirit of the original games, and when it was transferred to the Xbox they added and changed stuff.
And besides, if you don't have an original Xbox (far as I know, it isn't compatible with the Xbox 360) then the original version from that console isn't an option, since there aren't any decently playable Xbox emulators.
Plus the Dreamcast beta is free and can also be played on original hardware. All in all, the better choice.
Though not a financial supporter, I've been keeping track of this game. Actually glad its delayed. Gives developers time to make a good game and I'm swamped right now with games I want. Now there's more to look forward to in 2018!
Another game to look forward to in 2018 that’s all.
Can't say I'm shocked. Almost every indie game gets delayed to hell and back. Hopefully this ends up being a Cuphead and NOT a Mighty No.9 for all the waiting, though.
Wouldn't be surprised if we see a Rick and Morty tie-in.
I thought it was going to get delayed after not hearing much about a release date and the year is almost over.
@SuperTeeter64 Same. I thought this was only an X-Box thing. Did X-Box lose sole publishing rights?
@ThanosReXXX
I wasn't aware of the Dreamcast beta so thanks for pointing that out!
That said, I am one of those (seemingly) rare ToeJam & Earl fans that prefers Panic on Funkotron to the original. I also really enjoyed Mission to Earth. It felt like a good compromise between the gameplay of the first two games.
Regarding the new game, I love the animation style but I am also worried it will play too much like the original.
@KainXavier You're welcome. You can find the game for free at The ISO Zone. Don't know if you have a Dreamcast to play it on, but otherwise you could play it on PC using either Chankast or NullDC, which are Dreamcast emulators for PC.
@ThanosReXXX
I have a Dreamcast but I may go with your emulator suggestions so I don't have to dig it out. Although, I don't exactly remember why I put it away in the first place. I <3 my Dreamcast.
Also, to anyone concerned about our discussion of downloading a copy of an otherwise, unreleased game. Please know that the creators of ToeJam and Earl gave it their blessing and Sega has yet to say no.

Edit: Slight correction, the creators did not endorse the release but they were okay with their IP being used in this manner.
@KainXavier I can confirm the creators being okay with it. Just read the comments at the bottom underneath the video if you go to the actual YouTube page that it's on.
@KainXavier YOU PUT YOUR DREAMCAST AWAY???
But all kidding aside, to this day, I actually do still have it hooked up to the TV in my living room. Can't just put it away in the closet and allow it to get all dusty.
It's still one of the more unique and innovative consoles that has ever been made.
@ThanosReXXX
I think I just forgot to take mine back out when I moved. I have way too many consoles to keep them all connected but I normally keep my Dreamcast snuggled up against my GameCube since they're both top-loaders. (The GameCube stays out so I can play GameBoy games in 480p. )
@KainXavier By the way, don't know if you've heard of that one, but Propeller Arena is another great title, and a game that was actually completely finished, so not a beta.
It was cancelled due to it being about planes and skyscrapers, and the intended release unfortunately coincided with 9/11, so they decided not to release it.
But today, it can also be found on the ISO Zone, to download and play for free.
Here's a video:
@KainXavier Got my Dreamcast AND my GameCube hooked up. And my Wii, Wii U and my Xbox 360, and since a couple of weeks the SNES Classic Mini...
GameCube via SCART, Wii via high quality component and the Wii U, Xbox 360 and SNES Mini via HDMI. The Dreamcast is connected via VGA Box.
I got them all hooked up to a Panasonic Viera Full HD Plasma screen...
If your TV happens to have a VGA (also known as PC) input, then it's definitely worth it to purchase a VGA Box. They don't have to cost more than $50. Mine cost $38 and it works like a charm, makes Dreamcast games look their absolute best, at a rock solid 480p, just like the GameCube.
And there's even VGA to HDMI converter cables, so you could still use a VGA Box if your TV doesn't have that VGA input.
@ThanosReXXX
I don't have SCART so I'm using component cables for my GameCube. I do have a VGA box for my Dreamcast, though. And I agree, it looks great!
The TV I use for both consoles doesn't support HDMI but it does feature VGA and DVI connections. I actually use the VGA slot for my Xbox 360 since it's an older model that doesn't output to HDMI anyway. I eventually need to purchase a HDMI to DVI adapter that also outputs audio so I can de-clutter the living room TV somewhat.
