Mario Tennis Aces, the next big first-party Switch game from Nintendo, is a mere month away so we're naturally in full-on rumour mode. One of the big questions doing the rounds right now concerns the as yet unconfirmed full roster for the game, but one datamining effort could have the answers.
As always, the names listed below might not be accurate, but just in case some of them are, you might want to look away in case of spoilers:
- Mario
- Luigi
- Wario
- Waluigi
- Peach
- Daisy
- Yoshi
- Donkey Kong
- Koopa (Bowser)
- Koopa Jr. (Bowser Jr.)
- Hone Koopa (Dry Bowser)
- Teresa (Boo)
- Rosetta (Rosalina)
- Kinopico (Toadette)
- Kinopio (Toad)
- Diddy Kong
- Noko Noko (Koopa Troopa)
- Pata Pata (Koopa Paratroopa)
- Hey-Ho (Shy Guy)
- Kameck (Kamek)
- Catherine (Birdo)

So what do you make of the list? Believable or BS? Share your thoughts on the story below...

Safe lineup, I just wish we had some Odyssey representation
Data miners must have a strong regulatory board/union because we never hear of any injuries or deaths from mine collapses.
HOLY MOLY! That is a LOT of characters!
It could have been better.
Too many Koopas and no Pauline.
...Blooper? Between him and Chain Chomp, you have one hell of an unusual tennis team.
I’m glad there’s no mention of metal mario or gold mario or pink peach.
What data are they mining? They have the game already?
@chardir A demo popped up on the eShop yesterday. The servers aren't live yet so it's basically useless for anything other than mining.
One is missing, Mii !!
thank all the gods that there are no stupid babies or multiple color/metal versions of the same character.
I'm really surprised Pauline was omitted though
And no CRANKY KONG!?
This sounds... cheap. It's a lot easier for them to slightly modify the Koopa model etc vs using more distinct characters
@JHDK Ah right, I didn't realise the demo was downloadable yet.
No Glydon.
Rip Pauline
This is going to sound really stupid but I read about "datamining" all the time. What exactly is datamining? Is it just storting through information in programming to see what's written into the code? If that's the case then how do they get information about a game not even released yet?
I'm very ignorant to dataming and hopefully someone can give a clear answer
But where's Goombario?
Best roster of any Mario spin-off to date, including any of the Mario Karts. I do hope we get some DLC characters though, like ones from Odyssey.
I'm still not thrilled that Nintendo seems to have abandoned Nabbit, but it's a great roster nonetheless! Can't wait for this game!

No Mii...
No babies. Thank the lord.
Pauline when
Funky Kong with a surfboard for a racket. And Cranky Kong with a modified cane.
Thank goodness they have Diddy in this. I thought Nintendo was more interested in characters like Pink Gold Peach and having 5 babies than fun, long time fan favorite characters such as Diddy. Sorry that Rare made better characters than you guys at times. Yeah I said it.
I think this is a good place to add in star fox characters. Take that star fox zero taste out of my mouth and prep me for grand prix.
Rabbids?
@Brandles That's essentially it, just looking through client files to see if any files stand out. In this case, I guess there were locked files in the demo client that revealed the new characters.
Where's my Wiggler!?!?
That's the first time I've seen most of these characters names as they're referred to in Japanese. Most of them are fun to say. "Catherine" and "Teresa" are just funny choices. And a little part of me feels all warm inside knowing that "Bowser" really is still called Koopa!!
@Randomname19 We needed pink gold Peach!
Some of the Japanese names are so... Descriptive.
Also I've always found it funny how the boos are named with a common female name just because.
It's nice to see Birdo return!
It's a shame there's no Cappy or Captain Toad though
So excited for this.
Brilliant line up! Very pleased with that
@Undead_terror Baby Pink Gold Peach
Why
@Mathias_Wolfbrok - this was probably in development before the cast was even finalized, let alone knowing who'd be popular.
@Anti-Matter I came here hoping to see A Mii character. Bummed...
We need Mii and Pauline and we're set to go. Come on Nintendo l!
where are cappy and pauline ????
Why does Spike keep appearing in this spinoffs?
Good- no Miis. Yuck.
It’s also a bit disappointing about Pauline not being there. I hope Nintendo starts adding her to Mario Party, Kart, Sports and such going forward.
I'm surprised they didn't keep Sprixie in from Ultra Smash.
@Randomname19 No baby characters, good
Where the heck are all the fan favourites like Foreman Spike, Onnanoko and Prince Pine?
Captain Toad deserves a promotion. And Nabbit deserves immortality.
I already knew about this, but this is a misleading title. You imply there are 26 POTENTIAL characters, when half of them are already confirmed characters.
@Brandles hackers have figured out how to access the Switch file system and move all kinds of data around.
@DBPirate Mario Super Sluggers' was larger, but I haven't actually played it as Europe never saw a release...
If they add characters from the the GBC game (Alex, Nina, Coz Brothers etc.) and GBA game (Clay, Ace etc.) this becomes Day 1 purchase for me.
@Mathias_Wolfbrok They should always assume we want Pauline
not like i'll be playing anyone other than chain chomp, but still cool
Nice, but missing Miis as an option, & Pauline. They probably wouldn't use every Mario game character ever, or even every human character from the N64/GBC GBA/NGC 3DS Mario Tennis games. That'd present some form of continuity (among the Tennis titles). It's Nintendo, so dlc is not out of the question, but if it's only 1, or 2 extra characters, they might as well include them.
Nintendo just keeps leaving out Fawful...
@Gen0neD
There’s probably a tumblr page for that
I hope Birdo is unlockable in the base game and we don’t have to wait for a tournament. She’s who I’m most excited for. I hope the list isn’t exhaustive in terms of future event characters too as Koopas and such are pretty safe, I’d love some Odyssey characters
I miss the old days when Bowser was "King Koopa"
No baby forms; check~
No metal forms; check~
No Koopa kids taking a slot each; check~
Birdo; Yeaaaaaah buddy!
there definitely not potentially in there. im 100% sure they're in the game
@justin233 @IKAY Actually the data miner did find mention of Miis in the game. I have no idea why it isn't mentioned in the article...
Regardless, I'm super happy that Miis will be in the game!
The usual suspects. Nothing truly special.
too many generic enemies, would've liked wiggler, pauline or even the super mario 3d world fairy
@mystman12 Now they just have to be playable. Let's hope for the best!
@Brandles
What the term implies: the process of mining into the data.
Given demos, willingly or not, just plain take more time to be develop (or, in some cases, pretty much contain the whole game - only with 90% of it sealed off, see Super Mario Run for example), the time needed to cut off every single mention of characters - mention which is in the code itself, as artistically portrayed in Wreck-It Ralph (see image below).
So, yeah. The characters aren't in the demo per se, but the fact that "hey, this guy exists in the full game!" hidden in the demo's code is.
This is basically what happens every time a demo is hacked.
And Nintendo has been way luckier with it so far! Just ask Square-Enix: their PSP title Dissidia Final Fantasy had the entire base roster potentially playable in the demo, and hackers had a field day with that, resulting in an arcade-only, 30%-voice-acted-only, 72 MB version of the full 1,13 GB game enjoyable from whoever had a modded PSP. So yeah, datamining is definitely the lesser of two evils.
@N64SNESU There's always a demand for Mario Tennis - not necessarily a big one, but still one none-the-less. We don't and won't really know what's in store for the Switch until E3 later in June. We DO know Yoshi will be this year, the Smash game which hopefully isn't a port, and Nintendo said Fire Emblem Switch has an estimated release of 2018. There's also the Mario + Rabbids story DLC in June, the Splatoon 2 story DLC this Summer, & the Xenoblade 2 DLC this Fall.
@Brandles
Datamining is basically digging through the code to see if there’s any scrapped or stored elements that could make its way into a future update or sequel. As for how they access it, I guess those who get sent review copies secretly do it following the game’s release.
