Super Smash Bros. creator and incredibly hardworking man Masahiro Sakurai has confirmed that he will be appearing in the Nintendo Direct: E3 2018 Presentation.
We already knew that Super Smash Bros. for Switch is scheduled to appear during the show, but this suggests that we'll be seeing a pleasing amount of details about the game next week. Sakurai's tweet below mentions that it's been a while since he last appeared on a Nintendo Direct (which is very true), and that he will be introducing something this time around.
We're not sure exactly how much involvement Sakurai has had in the creation of this latest Super Smash Bros. title - it was only a few months ago that we heard of his ideas regarding stepping down as a video game director. All we know is that he is definitely involved in some capacity and this appearance will likely play host to the game's true, major reveal.
Are we ready to get the Nintendo E3 hype train up and running? Let us know what you hope to see for Super Smash Bros. at E3 in the comments.

Can't wait for daddy sakurai
I pretty much expected that.
I love Smash, but I hope they don't spend too much time on it during the Direct to be honest.. We will get more than enough footage and info from the Treehouse and tournament.
Hopefully he will talk about a Kid Icarus Uprising sequel 😉
Sakurai FTW.
They should wheel him out like this.
Something to look forward to. Smash alone will keep me hyped, even if Nintendo’s other first-party offerings for the rest of the year are as sparse as they seem to be.
All hail master Sakurai, he will unleash the Ultimate Tabuu for Smash 5.
@thesilverbrick Aren’t we also expecting fire emblem, a Pokémon spinoff, and Yoshi this year?
@thesilverbrick To be fair, we don't know the entire scope of what their first party offerings for the rest of the year are. I mean, you can make assumptions off of what has or hasn't been shown thus far. But then you also have to keep in mind that E3 hasn't happened yet. I personally think all of the paranoia (not pointing to you in particular. But in general) should wait until after E3.
Give my Riddley, you ... you... (insert insult that rhymes with mustard)
Port.
@Roam85 We haven’t heard a word about Fire Emblem in over a year (and seeing as most games in that series end up in Japan first and wait months to be localized in the west, I don’t think it’s coming this year if we haven’t seen anything of it yet). Nintendo seems to have shelved Yoshi. I’m sure the game will surface at some point, but the fact that they are being absolutely silent about it leads me to believe it is getting some significant retooling and we might not see it for a while. Remember when we saw the first reveal of “Yarn Yoshi”? And then Yoshi‘s Woolly World didn’t release until a few years later? I think this is the same kind of scenario. And as far as Pokémon, I’m not at all excited for it. The Let’s Go games coming out this year look dreadfully simple, and though I’m sure they will sell well and appeal to a large audience, they are not for me.
It’s hard coming down off of last year when we got stellar first-party titles nearly every month. So far in 2018, we only received one brand new first party game, a competent yet simple Kirby title.
If Nintendo expects to sell 20 million consoles this fiscal year, they really need to step up their game, and fast.
@AJWolfTill YES. Just imagine, we get a Smash Bros. trailer and then Sakurai says, "This is the latest installment in the Super Smash Bros. franchise. Last time, I was working on two games at once: the 3DS and Wii U iterations. As Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo Switch is only one game, I've been able to focus on other projects. Please, take a look at this..." And then sh-BAM! Papa Sakurai introduces Kid Icarus: Ascention of Light releasing Spring, 2019!
@roy130390 ...custard? 🤔
@thesilverbrick I'm gonna take a guess and say you were one of the people that guaranteed Xenoblade 2 wouldn't come out in 2017.
And he will look younger than me!
I can't wait for the Smash meltdowns.
@roy130390 "Dastardly Villain you!" But yeah, if Ridley would work, who would take his place as the "Iconic" metroid boss? Kraid?
Unless it's significantly different or that show off some substantial single player and get rid of the useless 8 player smash, I can't say I'm hyped. I hope they don't spend half the direct showing off Smash
@IceClimbers Nope. And I didn’t doubt it, because Nintendo kept showcasing that game and reminding us it was coming. They have said absolutely nothing about Yoshi or Fire Emblem in a year.
Sakurai ‘bout to slam us with the knowledge
@Deku-Scrub Don'tcha mean "Smash our faces in with the knowledge?"
@GrooveManyula Ya got me there
Love that Sakurai making an appearance, dude is just plain cool.
Y'all realize that's an old pic of Sakurai? Might want to update with this:

Poor Sakurai. Just let the man rest, he’s been wanting to be done with Smash since after Melee, we can have Smash without him. He’s done good but he deserves to not be tied to the series anymore...
@thesilverbrick idk, Yoshi has a page on Nintendo’s website saying 2018, Nintendo has been releasing a lot of games for Switch with less than 6 months between starting to drop much news on it to release. Xenoblade 2 didn’t have much coverage until the E3 before release. I have my doubts either way that we’re only getting like 2 first party Switch games in the second half of this year. Most of last year’s E3 covered games that would be out within the year. That seems to be Nintendo’s newer trend instead of announcing all their games 3 years before release and delaying them twice.
@thesilverbrick The delay between the Japanese release to the Western release for both Fire Emblem and Xenoblade used to be an issue before last year. FE Echoes had a mere month or so between the Japanese and Western release and Xenoblade 2 was a worldwide release. Simply put, I think it's safe to say that Nintendo is putting their foot foward with an initiative to have as many worldwide or close to worldwide releases as possible. As of such there's no reason to really assume the FE16 will have a significant delay between regions. And as someone said above they're definitely putting more emphasis on shorter time between release and announcement.
Don’t you mean Mashed Potato Samurai?
@ShadJV You are correct that last year‘s E3 did focus on games mostly releasing in 2018. Problem is, most of the games they showcased we already knew about. Those titles didn’t debut at E3 last year. We know next to nothing about the second half of this year in terms of first party games, and that doesn’t bode well.
Don't just smash there let's Mewtwo it, strike a pose there's nothing to it.
@thesilverbrick The problem with your assumptions are that you're comparing this year to last year. Last year was a launch year, and because of that most of the 2017 titles were shown off at the beginning of the year. However they were shown off less to be like "Hey, here's all these great games we want you to buy," (Though of course they want people to buy them) and more to be like "Look at all the great games you can play on our shiny new console." With the switch already well established with a solid library, they don't need to do that and they very well could be saving a significant amount for E3. Now, you totally could be right that there is no where near enough games to fill out the rest of the year to a satisfying degree. But there isn't enough past comparable data to fully predict or assume just how Nintendo wants to structure it's announcement/release relationship from here on out with it's new focus on shorter announcement/release schedules.
@AJWolfTill It's a real shame what happened with Kid Icarus on the 3DS. A really cool and well made game that didn't get the attention it deserved due to an admittedly poor control scheme.
@IceClimbers And I guess you were one of those people that believed Zelda U would come out in 2015
@thesilverbrick Yoshi for the Wii U was shown off in January 2013 with just images. It eventually got a new reveal at E3 2014 (with demo) and got released shortly after the E3 2015. This Yoshi game got a reveal early 2017, and a demo on the e3 2017. I strongly believe the game will be coming out as the next big release after Mario Tennis in july/august.
There is nothing announced for after that, but don’t forget Nintendo likes to keep games under wraps until the very last moment. Announcing games on the E3 and releasing them later that year is a common strategy for them.
In other news, Day9 may host the PC variety show, Todd Howard might be present at Bethesda, and Aisha Tyler could make a phallic joke in the vicinity of a Frenchman.
Waiting for the article about SciresM finding the eShop listing and icon and all the salt in the comments.
I mean sure, Nintendo's E3 Presentation is a prerecorded video, so it's not really a hassle for anyone to show up in it.
We know it's going to be heavily Smash focused so Sakurai not being in it would be more of a surprise.
Seriously, if he gets any younger looking he'll be 12. I don't know what the fountain of youth is, but I think he found it.
@JayJ An admittedly poor control scheme that Sakurai himself insisted was the only acceptable way to play....
@Haru17 And Yeves may do his "I'm a little teapot..." pose.
@AJWolfTill Good god, yes!!! I've been wanting a sequel or an HD remake on the Wii U ever since.. i felt like that would've been the ideal system... but dang. . an HD Switch version.... 😀😀😀
@thesilverbrick 2019 seems to be the big year for Nintendo 1st (Non-Ports... Maybe!) Parties wise. i like to see 2018 to be next big top. but maybe E3 2018 will shine something...
@thesilverbrick yeah but we only knew about them, most we hardly heard details yet on. Like Yoshi and Fire Emblem this year. I wouldn’t just assume there won’t be any big announcements for games coming this year, they’re not gonna suddenly not release anything but one Pokémon game for 6 months.
I might not get this game as I'm booked for Pokemon Let's Go Eevee but it's good to know that it's in the works
I still kind of think this is Smash 4 Super Deluxe Edition. Nothing wrong with that.
@Not_Soos I can't believe you would pick Kid Icarus over Kirby Air Ride!
@mystman12 What about a Waluigi reveal trailer for Smash Bros., including a Waluigi Pinball stage, instead? And rather than a stage builder, the game lets you program your own code, so you could make your own City Trial within the game itself.
Plot twist, Sakurai isn’t there to announce Smash Bros, but a new game entirely...
Yes, he's still alive.
@Not_Soos That sounds amazing and given the huge surprise Star Fox being developed by Ubisoft was, couple with the ten unanounced untitled games from GameStop, and Sakurai himself appearing here with only one Smash (and other hints), a new Kid Icarus actually sounds quite likely. I love the title btw, watch it be a “one more announcement”, just random, or Sakurai himself showing it after Smash
@Athenanirvana Thanks! I just came up with the title on a whim as I was making my comment. I really don't expect any Kid Icarus news in tomorrow's Direct though, if I'm being completely honest; my comment was mostly just wishful thinking. That being said, I'll gladly be proven wrong!
@Not_Soos After That Star Fox Ubisoft reveal I honestly have no idea what to expect this E3 either. We could see Kid Icarus or we won’t see it, but either way I have a strong feeling one is being made and it’s reveal will be shown at some point, if not this E3 then in a future Direct or next E3. If it is shown this E3, I think they’ll reveal the same way they did with Metroid Prime 4, a really random teaser if it shows at all.
