The developer behind 2012's Dust: An Elysian Tail has revealed that its next project to coming exclusively to the Nintendo Switch.
Never Stop Sneakin’, as you can see from the trailer above, it a parody of Konami's seminal Metal Gear Solid, lampooning elements from the 1998 PlayStation outing - even the visuals look like they're straight out of a 32-bit game.
Developer Humble Hearts has peppered the plot with aspects that Kojima himself would be proud of; time-travel, preposterously-named vampire-like enemies and - wait for it - a vice-president who is a helicopter. Even the music which plays over the trailer apes the James Bond-style theme which opened Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.

Humble Hearts’ Dean Dodrill had this to say:
I had several goals I wanted to accomplish with my sophomore effort as a game developer. I wanted to try something in a completely different aesthetic, and go fully-polygonal in the process. I wanted to create something procedural and infinitely re-playable, and design engaging combat with the simplest controls possible. I think I've accomplished these things, and it's been a thrill to create something completely different from [Dust: An Elysian Tail].
It looks amazing - and it's a Switch exclusive. What do you make of this announcement?

If it gets good reviews I think I’ll give this a try.
This guy did an awesome job with Dust and Elysian tale. BY HIMSELF. It was an amazing effort. If he put as much afford into this then it's likely worth a purchase.
Dust: Elysian Tale was a very well received, successful game on PS4.
Anything from these devs will pique my interest.
I've been wanting MGS of some sort on Switch so I'll keep an eye on this.
Oh wow, so I guess we've reached the point where indie-devs are going to start mimicking the look and feel of N64/PS1 games. I'm cool with that!
This looks great and a Switch exclusive too. Love the 32 bit style, beats the usual 8bit style most indies go for. Hopefully we won't be waiting too long for it to arrive.
It doesn't look that interesting to me just yet. Will wait for reviews though.
I’m a big fan of Vice President helicopter. I might pick this up when it comes out.
A procedural metal gear solid? Hmmm...not sure, might be good?
The "indie devs do a spiritual successor because the original IP owners won't" happened with Metal Gear Solid.
And given Konami's track record, it was only a matter of time. Bring it on, guys. It will make as much sense as the MGS lore anyway.
Oh man, I love the unabashedly stupid plot. Reminds me of Dr. McNinja, actually.
When do we get this?
I was expecting this to actually look like or play like MGS but neither of those look true. So they’re inspired by a PS1 era classic and made the gameplay procedural? We just saw this with Vaccine, and that didn’t go down too well.
An indie game, copying everything poorly. How many people want to sign up for that? It looks awful.
I was a huge fan of the original MGS back in the day and have disliked the series more with each entry. A parody of it would be amazing but this...doesn't look like what I would imagine for that. Haha. Pass.
Closest thing Switch will get to a Metal Gear Solid game probably.
urgh i really dislike these totally random settings. helicopter vice president?? sorry i don't get it. maybe not my kind of humor.
i also don't like to see my favourite game ever getting a parody. which is not even remotely funny.
oh and the gameplay doesn't look anything like stealth
Thanks to ThanosReXXX for sending this in.
Oh, wait...
As far as the game and its inspiration goes, they definitely got that whole ugly ministeck graphics vibe of the PS1 down to a tee, so major credits for that. Too bad they didn't incorporate the heat wave effect, to make it even more of a tongue in cheek stab at the PS1's wibbly wobbly 3D...
And sure, the humor is dryer than dry, but really, you have to be able to see through that and not take it so serious that you feel that it insults or ridicules Metal Gear Solid.
If anything, it's just mocking the era and is more a parody in and of itself, and on its own merits, it could still be interesting. Let's just wait and see until it gets released, and then we'll put it on the chopping block if needed...
@Zyrac love me some Dr McNinja
@Menchi187 That's OK; this looks like a perfect fit for the Switch.
I like the trend of vocal jazz theme songs to Nintendo Switch games
Interested in the premises alone. I want to rescue all of the former presidents.
So far, the plot of this game makes more sense to me than actual MGS titles.
The plot sounds hilarious. I like the ridiculousness of it all. It'll be nice to see if it plays out well because sometimes it takes a lot of smarts to make something so dumb be good. (Also, Dust was pretty good so I'd be willing to give it a try.)
Looks funny, but I’m not 100% sold on the gameplay yet. I love Metal Gear though, so I’ll probably get this for the gags.
Kind of feel sold on this for the humor.
Yeah, this piqued my interest right away. It's like a fun mash-up of a twin-stick shooter with MGS1. And it's exclusive to the Switch, no less! Hopefully this gets plenty of love!
Nah - no thanks.
So.... are we going to have MGS 5 from Konami? It can run on PS3, so porting shouldn't be a problem.
Is there a reference I'm missing with the helicopter gag? That part just seems really random.
I’d die happy if we ever got MGS1-4 on Switch. Never played 5. This looks... eh
I really want MGS 4 on the Switch. Konami needs to make it happen.
@BulbasaurusRex Probably poking fun at how often the Hind D appears in the MGS series. That and the fact that Liquid took down two F-16s in a Hind D.
@WhiteTrashGuy I'd also like that, but MGS4 was heavily built around the PS3's own processor so that could be difficult. They could probably do it if they really wanted to. I'd be down for the MGS Legacy Collection and MGSV Definitive Experience on Switch, but it'll most likely never happen unfortunately...MGSV was on PS3 and Xbox 360 though, so I think it could run on Switch as well, but probably at 30 fps.
Ooooooooooooh boy
I'd really have liked it better if the game was not a top down shooter and was an actual sneaking mission game. Still gotta give the dev some props for the hilarious plot and idea
@Nincompoop doubt it can run on the switch. I played the xbox 360 edition quite extensively and it's graphics are shi- (whoops forgot this is nintendo life) even on the 360- low resolution, very pixely, textures are garbage, and it only runs 30fps. on the switch it would just be a mess.
plus you really don't want mgsv on the switch anyways. that game was a stain upon the great metal gear franchise.
Dust: An Elysian Tale was incredible. I haven't played many better action-RPGs. This new effort sounds a little weird, but I will give this guy the benefit of every doubt - he has earned it. Glad it's coming to Switch.
Gameplay doesnt look very Metal Gear...?
The Dev has already said on Twitter/NeoGaf that this almost certainly will appear on other systems besides the switch.
As impressive as Dust was for a one man game I got really bored of it. Hopefully the gameplay has more development in this.
Twin Snakes remaster. All we need.
There's a reason why almost no indie's mimic the style of N64/PS1 games, that's because they haven't aged very well. Even though I'm a MGS fan, this doesn't look very appealing to me (graphics and gameplay wise).
I don't know. When I think of movies that lampoon other movies, they always kind of suck. I can't see it working for a game either.
I can’t wait to not play this
Could use a bit if humour, if it plays well I'm up to give it a shot.
Although don't know if I'd vote for VP helicopter. Not really my type of helicopter.
@happylittlepigs I think Switch can handled MGS 5: Wii U is faster than PS3 and Switch is 3x faster than Wii U, so the graphics will look better and perform better.
Not my favourite MGS but open world game just feels better on a portable.
How can Humble Hearts go from gorgeous state of the art 10/10 action platformer adventure to mediocre outdated ps2-era action game?
@PanurgeJr Just like the rest of the 99% of trash this console has been getting, right.
Saw the word 'procedural' and that's kind of put me off.
They had me at Vice President Helicopter.
So, i guess the awful 3D models and over pixelated textures are also a parody ? I mean, sure, the PS1 looked awful by todays standards but...yeah..."haha" i guess.
Yeah, no. I'll pass.
@Einherjar Those awful 3D models and over pixelated textures (aka Ministeck tiles) are indeed a highly accurate representation of what the PS1 was all about, so yes.
The "Vaseline effect" on the N64 was far less annoying, but set that aside for a moment, and you'll realize that the N64's 3D was far more stable and superior, due to it using floating point processing (thanks, Silicon Graphics) as opposed to the PS1's highly inferior fixed point processing, which was also the reason for the wibbly-wobbly motions of the 3D graphics as you moved your character/vehicle around a playing field.
It was the one big thing that has always deterred me from buying a Playstation (well, that and the awfully unergonomic controller). Even back then it already annoyed me, regardless of how cool some of its games looked. (I did like that T-Rex demo, though... )
And besides, I had already played Wave Race and 1080 on the N64, so I was kind of spoiled on how good and stable early 3D could actually look...
@ThanosReXXX As someone who owned and loved both systems, i can confirm:
Even though the N64s overall lesser power, its 3D processor was far superior. If im not mistaken, the system even used rudimentary Anti-Aliasing by default as well.
That said, the N64 had the best 3D processor, the Saturn handled 2D better than anything else while the PS was sort of the middle of the road or the two.
So yeah, i get the whole "Look, it even looks like a PS1 game" but honestly, its the equivalent of chopping your own arms of just to tell the "look ma, no hands" joke...
And that's the thing, it isn't even a proper homage to MGS.
Its a completely different game with a few memes thrown in...
And to think that this is coming from the bloke who singlehandedly crafted "Dust: An Elysian Tail", one extremely well animated 2D Platformer...
I'm curious...I'll wait for reviews though. Mr. Shifty burned me.
@Einherjar Yeah, like I already stated in my initial comment, the humor/comedy is quite cheesy, but the point is to see through that, and have a look at the game itself instead of the coat it's wearing.
If it then still doesn't interest you, then fair enough, but dismissing it instantly because of it not having funny humor, is kind of childish in my humble opinion.
And the homage, or rather: inspiration, is actually quite true to MGS, at least where the sneaking part is concerned. They just took that and magnified it and added a bit of ridiculousness flavor to it, that's all...
P.S.
Just an observation, not an insult: as an American living in Europe, it was brought to my attention quite early on that German humor isn't appreciated/understood in most parts of the world either, so in general, them commenting on something not being funny is highly frowned upon, and largely ignored. Certainly over here in the Netherlands.
I don't know if that's still some kind of post-WW2 legacy thing, but it's quite prevalent.
@ThanosReXXX
"If it then still doesn't interest you, then fair enough, but dismissing it instantly because of it not having funny humor, is kind of childish in my humble opinion."
Honest question: Why ? Humor is, as you said yourself, highly subjective. And if it doesn't "click", why shouldn't i dismiss it because of that ?
Why should i sit through stuff i don't like for a game that might be OK ?
If you ask me, its a perfectly valid point. If the humor, the artstyle, the setting etc doesn't appeal to you, why should you endure it ?
And what i meant with "completely different game":
MGS was a very methodical and slow paced stealth game. Thas is thrown out the window with procedurally generated levels already.
I'd say it looks more akin to things like Hotline Miami with a stealth twist.
Don't get me wrong though, im in no way saying that the game is bad in any way. Quite the opposite, the gameplay looks quite fun.
Its just that the deliberate PS1 aesthetics and its "in-your-face" literal interpretation of MGS really rubs me the wrong way.
As for humor in general, it depends.
We actually have a really strong comedy and cabaret culture.
Our stand-ups are pretty much a carbon copy of US-Stand-Up routines. Its just that our mainstream comedy skit shows suck major koopa shell. Comparable to US parody movies...the worst ones...
Our day to day humor is a bit "british". Dark, politically incorrect and harsh. So yeah, we can be funny...or insulting, depending on wich end of the joke you're on
@Einherjar Why? Because the core game that is inside of that funny/unfunny shell can still be good. And if you ask me, enduring is a bit too much, though: it's not torture, it's just a game.
All it takes is a click of the A button to skip those cheesy intros and cut scenes, if someone is bothered by them. All I'm saying is that people might very well be dismissing an actually entertaining game, simply based upon condemning the outer shell of it.
That's a classic case of judging a book by its cover, and that is always a bad thing, no matter which way you look at it, and not just with games, either...
And of course the aesthetics are deliberate. How else can you mimic PS1 graphics? And that is also what I meant with magnified, or perhaps I should have said "over-exaggerated".
As for German humor: no offense, but I'm afraid I personally don't find it funny either, not because I was brainwashed by the Dutch to dislike it no matter what, but because it just doesn't seem the same to me as American or British comedy at all.
And I really like British humor, especially the dry, sarcastic tone it sometimes has. American comedy has largely grown stale, so save for a few exceptions, I don't really feel the need to market American comedy/stand up, just because I'm originally from around those parts...
With German, the language may be a big factor as well, even though I actually do speak German reasonably enough to understand it and make myself understandable.
Your crime series, on the other hand, are really solid, so those are enjoyable to watch, every now and then.
@ThanosReXXX
"That's a classic case of judging a book by its cover"
Which is a good argument on paper, but in reality, people can't grow money, thus, they have to wager what to buy and what not.
Which is where the "cover" comes in. Im not paying money for a game where the premise is to "All it takes is a click of the A button to skip those cheesy intros and cut scenes".
Its basically buying a snickers and removing the peanuts because i don't like those...
I could just buy a mars bar instead even though a snickers without peanuts might be just as good.
In short: I get where you are coming from, but in reality, i simply won't buy thing where i know from the start that i won't like / enjoy a huge part of its appeal.
Or lets take another example: Im a die hard fan of Koei's Warriors series. So much so, that i have a dedicated shelf for my collection.
And i have played all of them...except the One Piece games.
Why ? Because i simply can't stand the show.
So, no matter how good the games might be, and no matter them being part of one of my number one gaming passion, i skipped them because i know that i won't like its characters, settings etc.
And you think our crime shows are good ?
Which is funny, since most people here think they are boring as nobs And that's saying something when scandinavian crime dramas are on the rise here (they are the epitome of dryness).
But it's always fascinating how tastes can differ so drastically based on where you grew up.
This ain't no MGS game, looks more like a generic twin stick shooter of a lame mobile port, hmm Neon Chrome springs to mind
@Einherjar Snickers without peanuts isn't a Mars bar...
And "All it takes is a click of the A button to skip those cheesy intros and cut scenes" is not the premise of a game, it's a quick, off the top of my head suggestion I offered for people that are slightly more open-minded and are willing to poke through the surface to possibly still find an entertaining game, regardless of the outer, cheesy appearance.
You know, thinking in solutions instead of problems, glass half full and all that stuff...
But pet peeves aside, and to be clear: I was talking in general, so of course I can respect a personal view here and there, but if the general consensus would be "I'm not ever going to play/buy that game, because I don't like the cheesy jokes made in it", then my previous statement could definitely be considered a very valid one.
And I don't like ALL of your crime shows, but a couple of them are frequently broadcasted over here in the Netherlands, so even if they don't like your jokes, they apparently do like your series, and that is how I came to know them.
And for the record: I like some Scandinavian shows as well, but more the sci-fi ones, such as Humans and so on. The Brits did a pretty good remake of that as well.
And those One Piece games are pretty good too: got both of them on the Wii. I never even saw any episode of the show before, but the games themselves piqued my interest, so I tried them out and liked them on their own merits.
@Nincompoop Wii U better than PS3? and switch 3x better than wii U?
zelda BOTW ran exactly the same on switch and wii u. I'm not saying the switch isn't better, but it certainly isn't better by a factor of 3. and I'm just gonna have to call BS on wii u being more powerful than the last gen home consoles. it may have been equally powerful as far as resolution capabilities, but considering what's under the hood, it is my knowledge that the wii u was even at best. MGSV realistically shouldn't have even been on PS3/360 in the first place because of how choppy and unclean it was. being on the switch wouldn't be a ton better.
Buying it simply because i love Dust, and since it's Switch Exclusive im gonna help making it a success. Also look fun, which helps.
@happylittlepigs
PS3 = 230.4 gigaFLOPS
Xbox 360 = 240 gigaFLOPS
Wii U = 352 gigaFLOPS
Switch = 1 teraFLOPS
https://www.gamespot.com/gallery/console-gpu-power-compared-ranking-systems-by-flop/2900-1334/10/
Looks fun to me, like the name "Never Stop Sneakin'" too.
@Nincompoop there has to be more to console's ability to run games than just flops though? why else have ports to the switch been signficantly downgraded like DOOM?
@happylittlepigs PS4 is 1.8 gigaflops, almost twice the speed of Switch, of course it has to be downgraded. Doom is a PS4 game, not PS3.
As a big fan of MGS, I was disappointed with the trailer. The style in terms of colour and environment looked pretty good, but not keen on the character models - MGS' models looked pretty amazing for a PS1 game. Everything else looked good though, visuals wise.
But mostly, I'm just disappointed that a game called Never Stop Sneakin seems to be an action shooter rather than a stealth game.
