@Mart1ndo I totally agree with you, I loved the 20 or so hours I spent on The Last of Us, and I was definitely of the opinion that games around that length actually fit my lifestyle better, and were still achievable to finish.
However, both XCX and Zelda have really changed my feelings on that, having spent a little over 100 on Zelda and a little under on XCX, I always look forward to when I can squeeze in another hour or 2, and the good news is you definitely don't need 400 hours to complete Zelda (unless you're 100%ing that thing!).
@mikegamer The ethical ground of VC is very different though, as Nintendo own the IP of the games on VC. It would be like calling Netflix a TV emulator and categorising it in the same way as PirateBay.
Anyway, the industry doesn't seem bothered any more, and it's an enjoyable and interesting challenge for a small niche so as long as it doesn't become rapidly commericalised and harm industry sales then why not eh?!
@OneArmedGiant OK so now... which version do I pick up? Quite fancy a go at the Wii version, as XCX needed a massive TV... it got to the point that I struggled on a 32" tv haha, such detailed menus!
I didn't think I'd like XCX, but that and BotW are the only games in years where I have just loved exploring and hit 100 hours easily!
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I guess the difference between the two review styles depends on how well the original content holds up at the time of release for the latter version. I expect it's fair to say that Lego City does the same as before and is dated for it, whereas MK8 is still immensely playable today.
I'm still undecided myself, but I think when you make a great game like that it's fair to market it again to new potential players.
@Anti-Matter That's fine, in fact that's great, I'm certain it will be an amazing version and you'll love it! I'm tempted myself, but as I already have the game on Wii U I'll leave it for now. Some people on here are acting like their Wii U copy becomes invalid and unplayable when the Switch version is released!
You don't HAVE to buy this again if you have the Wii U version you know folks?!
I have the Wii U version and 4 controllers so I'll be happily keeping it to enjoy with my mates, and there's no need for me to buy the Switch version at present.
IF at some point I want to play it on Switch then that's my call and I can do that, perhaps after release it will be a little cheaper. Anyway that's MY decision and Nintendo aren't forcing me to do anything!
@fastharryDOTcom Thanks, I hadn't actually heard of the companies mentioned in the video, but they suggested that Anker were reputable, so Anker cables and battery pack makes sense I guess!
These look good, I think I'll get the tiny Anker one!
I heard about nasty USB-C cables being something to avoid at all costs. Can anyone recommend a decent one for the Switch? Is it USB-C to USB-C? Or Normal USB to USB-C?
@RadioHedgeFund Surely the Sheikah slate and warp points were made for that touch screen on the gamepad?!
As much as I love both games, it's slightly odd to see that Monolith nailed what is (in my opinion) a stunning and vast open world on Wii U better than the big N.
Disappointing that they didn't get it fixed yet, but in response to the negativity, I had buyer's remorse until I opened the box and got it all set up. I'm very impressed with the hardware so far, it's a joy to use and the controllers are WAY more comfortable to play with than I expected. Now just get people's sync issue fixed Nintendo!
@ThomasBW84 Did Nintendo only give out Switch review versions? I guess it's fair enough that they would like to forget that the Wii U version even exists in a marketing sense. Understandable as I think I will specifically not get a Switch tomorrow as I can get this on Wii U.
Anyone else in that boat? If it was ONLY on Switch I'd be getting one at launch I think. Hope the Wii U version still holds up well, it'll be so expensive here!
Look on the PSN store (which is great) and you can pay the absurd prices of £69.99, or even £74.99 for such classics as any deluxe NBA/NHL/NFL game, Valentino Rossi etc. when new.
The major difference is that if you look back 2 weeks later those titles will be £14.99 for a few days. Nintendo need to get to grips with proper eShop offers and sales, or their online department will never thrive on "go on then" whims like the PSN does.
It's also great for gamers, to be excited about having a look, seeing if there's a tempting game going cheap, and thus trying something new. Surely a win-win. I will never download a game at full RRP, why would you bother?
I agree with Mitch's cautious optimism. Think about the last few years, basically every time there has been a situation like "Oh I hope Nintendo has done X instead of Y which will disappoint everyone", it's been Y, sadly. There are too many pitfalls which they have an amazing track record of falling into, they will not avoid them all with Switch, will they? Can they?! (I hope so!)
And if 720p is the main thing you're worried about whilst you're playing a basketball game on Switch ON A BASKETBALL COURT WITH YOUR MATES then you've got bigger issues
It was in Vienna a few weeks ago but it was just a bit too pricey for me. Kinda regretting not going now, as I think it's finishing for good in December
I honestly think it's good value if you're into that kind of thing.
As a fan-made project it does lack the polished sheen of an old Future magazine, but in my opinion it more than makes up for it with decent content throughout, written by passionate people.
Actually watch the footage and it looks really slick, with a time limit, little gymnastic touches like Mario adroitly piggy-backing Goombas, and a ghost to show what your rival is doing.
Not your standard boring runner. Well worth the probable £1 and hopefully that's £1x A few Million for Nintendo.
I was thinking £3.50 is quite reasonable really, and £4.50 for folks like me who live abroad is ace.
I just got a copy, so thanks for the heads up, it'll be great to see what it's like. I can't argue at that price considering most magazines give you content available on the web and charge over £5 for it... I'm hoping for 40 pages of top quality stuff
To be honest, if it has that community and fun feeling that N64 & SuperPlay had, then it's well worth it!
@AlexOlney I'm sure I would have picked this up at the time, I played basically all the racers on 64.
Funny that so many of you mention the game looking tasty... It may well be 2016 nostalgi-o-vision, but I felt like it looked like a good PS1 game! In my mind, World Driver Championship looked much nicer. I know this was unfinished, too, but it looks light years away from being fun! That car handling and awful collision detection, with AI cars scraping along the sides at 60mph...
Still, great to see a dev kit being used for a game that I didn't even hear about
Whilst I appreciate that EA games are enjoyed by a lot of people, for me they do not add any attractiveness to a new Nintendo console.
EA produce almost nothing that doesn't devalue immediately and become easily available elsewhere, so why should I care where they put their games. They would NEVER bother to tailor a decent experience for a unique NX console anyway (they are the masters of the repackaged full-price-a-thon) so their support adds little but argumentative clout to those who probably won't want an NX anyway. I'd much rather other good 3rd parties, and the cream of the indie crop were invited along (see PS4's amazing major indie catalogue for reference).
@darthstuey Is it collecting dust yet? Or still having fun? I just found it where I live for €12 with the figures etc... gotta be worth a go at that price... I think!
Sorry folks, but for me "N64 magazine" and its other guises, "NGC", "NGamer" and... "SuperPlay(?)" were always WAY above and beyond the official Nintendo mags in the UK in terms of fun, irreverence, and actual impartial reviewing quality. When that went downhill, you knew printed gaming journalism was at a low ebb.
No "kids" console will sell to anyone, surely it would be an unmitigated disaster. Adult gamers wouldn't touch it, 3rd parties would only release shovelware and kids already want to play GTAV and CoD, or tablet based tat, sad but them's the facts. Kids don't want things that they think are for kids.
I don't mean to disrespect those children who have taste and are immune to peer pressure, but sadly they aren't a sizeable demographic.
I heard that this follows the original script for the film "TED", before Seth McFarlane got involved
The irony with this reaction is that the game looks (for what it is) actually quite good. It's that classic Nintendo thing that even in a "kids game" the animations look nice, the backgrounds are nicely detailed, the music is well composed, and that all adds together to give a product that feels like it has been made by people who care. That sums up Nintendo basically. When those things are missing from a game, you see some of that god-awful kids shovelware that will put gamers off for life, at age 5.
A lot of people feel the way I do here, I have really enjoyed a lot of games on my Wii U, and just like with the GC & N64, in years to come I will still get it back out to play some of the classics. That said, in comparison to N64 games, Nintendo's overall game libraries have dropped in quality slightly with each console since then, and you can see that they were overstretched for Wii U. Mario games and Starfox games getting 4 or 5 out of 10, not the usual Nintendo way.
Just paid for this! Don't forget to adjust the slider appropriately so the charity of your choice (or the games developers of your choice) get the right moneys! Now...what to play first, Darksiders II maybe...
Oh wait...I forgot my WiiU was totally full, looks like I need to get another SD card haha!
They're just treading carefully, as they really screwed up the message on the Wii U launch. It's a shame for this year's E3, but Zelda is massive, and if the NX gets a standalone launch which comes with no competitors to soften it, then it could pack a really powerful punch. Interest is always diluted at E3 in a way, and Nintendo aren't in a position to "steal the show" whatever they put out.
@RadioShadow Thanks for your advice, no it doesn't say Nintendo on it, so I bought another one which claimed to be TRUE RGB off eBay...exactly the same issue, so I'm a bit annoyed about that! I'll try another one! Have you used the ones from that site? I guess they are legit
I must have the worst possible TV for GameCube gaming...colours are so washed out, basically Luigi's Mansion & Eternal Darkness are the only things worth playing! Anything with colour, MarioGolf, Monkey Ball etc. are horrible!
Oddly enough my Dreamcast seems to run just fine with the same crappy composite video input...weird. I might try S-Video after watching that.
Anyone else had similar washed out GC games on flat tv?
Goldeneye 007 (wii) still plays beautifully with WiiMote, offering what almost no other good shooters can.
Pro Evolution Soccer is also a great example, a really niche game on Wii, but it's hard to argue against it being the most in-depth, complete and satisfying control method for any football game ever. BUT it takes a few games to learn, so people generally stick to what they know rather than learn to love something new.
@Einherjar Top explanation, thanks! Now you mention it I did actually remember something along those lines with the ever occurring debates about people misunderstanding why PS & XB have been very reluctant to include backwards compatibility. You've basically gotta have a whole PS2 inside your 60gb PS3 I guess, and you can see the Wii U boots up its own internal Wii when it runs Wii channel...it's making sense now
@Einherjar I'm sorry that I don't have time to read well over 400 posts on the subject, but thank you for actually clearing the details up for me
I never stated that Nintendo were lying about it, I just said that when you just say the CPU isn't powerful enough for games aged around 25 years old it does sound rather strange to many people. I don't think anyone can dispute that.
Anyway, forums have a unique quality of being able to make people very whiny and childish, so to whoever said you're ashamed to be counted as a Nintendo fan with the other people on here (!) come on! This is a fun, good spirited website involving many people with all kinds of different gaming interests and ages, and yes, also different levels of technical knowledge. On a forum it would be amazing if you could be in that 0.1% of people who actually writes a helpful response instead of arguing some nonsense
Rather than expecting people to trawl through over 400 comments to find the right one that explains the situation (why does the article not do that itself?) why not recommend one perhaps? Also the point is valid that almost no consumers on the whole will understand why these things can't run on a 3DS. I wouldn't even care if it was just because "new" 3DS needed more exclusives, hell, it does! I never said Nintendo are doing it deliberately, I'm just saying what's clearly reflected here. People don't get it.
I had a perfectly good SNES emulator running on my PSP 10 years ago (Chrono Trigger, yes!) and whilst I'm sure these new versions are great, surely a CPU that can handle Resi: Revelations & MarioKart 7 can cope with Super Mario World?
