Those of you that checked out the European Nintendo Download Update details earlier today may have spotted that one of the new releases, The Battle Cats POP!, is out today. In positive news for all cat fans it's also arrived early in North America, so it's available now on the 3DS eShop in both territories.
Once known as 'that weird cat game that keeps appearing in Japanese Nintendo Directs', The Battle Cats POP! began as a free-to-start smart device title that apparently picked up over 20 million downloads. This 3DS version was given a big push by Nintendo in Japan, though the strategy in the West seems to be to allow developer PONOS to drop it onto the store on a Monday and hope for the best.
As for what the game is, it's a side-scrolling real time strategy / tower defence title - we're getting strong Swords & Soldiers vibes off it, albeit with a lot of different cat types as units. The 3DS version also has a Vs. mode, but don't tell PETA.
Its price tag is $9.99 / €9.99 / £8.99, though is thankfully free of all the micro-transactions of the original version. Are you tempted to give it a try?

It's out now? Not Thursday? Still waiting for a review...
I can't believe what I'm saying. This actually looks pretty good 😂 I'll wait for a few reviews before buying though.
This is PURRfect! Soon all my my enemies will be saying meOW as I will bring CATastrophe to their kingdoms and I will CLAWS the destruction of them all!
FUR there is nothing that can stop me.
I'll get it, no review needed, love the more Japanese feel to it being a tower defense
What in the world?
Lots of Japanese weirdness going on in that trailer.
I'm usually not one for tower defense games, but this looks weird enough to be interesting.
I wasn't expecting that high level of weirdness. I have Swords & Soldiers 1&2 on my Wii U so I don't have a need for this kind of game right now although I think it's better to have this kind of experience on the go. I might get it later if it's actually something worth purchasing.
yup I'm getting this!
I'll give it a try if it's on the level of Swords & Soldiers 1 and 2. Loved both those games!
Oh my!
Looking forward to reading a review.
That cat head with the fabulous legs.
Almost colorless, freaky looking, what the heck was that ?
My... that was even weird than Tomodachi Life.
They had me at cats....... Maybe wait for a sale or a review though before I open a tin of this meaty goodness
@Pikachupwnage Go away, Sigma.
It looks very adorable, which I can't resist. :3 But Real-time Strategy games have never been my kind of game. Will wait for a review, purrhaps (sorry) this game will change my mind on the matter.
I'm at least curious, no demo right?
This title took Japan by storm on the 3ds. It's already been downloaded 400,000 times. That's very impressive for a dl only title on one platform in only on region.
@TeeJay Those fabulous legs are Fred Rechid approved!
Does it have 3d? Thanks
Damn! is the Eshop down for maintenance?
@Anti-Matter Looks like a mix between Rhythm Tengoku, Viewtiful Joe and Simpsons Drawings that I Gone and Done!
@cfgk24 yeah it is, until 10 PM EST (7 PM Pacific). Nintendo decided to extend the maintenance window for the EShop maintenance check, probably so that it ends around the same time as their separate "Online Play, Rankings, etc." maintenance check.
when can we expect a review for this game Thomas?
cause a lot of us people don't know anything about it whatsoever and wonder if it's even worth its asking price.
...day one purrchase!..
@SH007ME The eshop maintanence has made thai impossible for us east coasters :/
I stink at RTS games and never really tried Swords and Soldiers as a result as I usually tune out as soon as RTS is uttered, but this at least will get a trial run on my phone before I decide to buy it.
Plus cats are awesome.
Oh hey, a friend tricked me into buying this game and we've been playing it every morning on the train for a while now. I didn't actually know anything other than that about the game until this article. It's not the greatest game I've ever played (tower defense or otherwise), and definitely feels like it started out as a science phone game, but it is pretty dang addictive.
Think Ill stick to iOS version of it but at least here is another option for people that dont have phones to play it.
Loved it on android. Maybe I'll check it out.
@Moon not being a thursday for DL only is super weird.
unless its E3 then its fine, but its not E3 so...
game is already a WTH might be worth a look at.
I got it on Adroid a while back and really liked it. It unfortunately eventually broke for some reason. I'll be glad to play it without microtransations!
