Re: Soapbox: Xenoblade Chronicles X's Influence Is Bigger Than You Think

My first XC game, and an unforgettable experience. The joy of exploration was up there with the best games I've ever played. I learned to get to grips with the seemingly insane battle mechanics, too.
Not much of a mention for Monolith being called in to help with BotW so far, and when you play XCX you see why they gave them a call!

Re: EA Acquires Racing Game Specialist Codemasters

mid_55

Bad news for the F1 fans out there. Codemasters seemed to be improving year on year and apparently provided a decent game for eSports as well. Unlikely that their love of getting into the detail of F1 will be allowed to continue.

I'm expecting yearly repackages, and then once in a while a real trash game so they can "improve" again after that.

Anyone less cynical about EA than I am who can add some positivity?

Re: Talking Point: Cloud Gaming On Switch – The Pros And Cons Of The Cloud

mid_55

Control is one of my favourite games in the last few years, I loved the story, the setting, and the combat was HELLA FUN, not to mention providing one of the finest moments in gaming full stop.

It was stretching my PS4 slim to breaking point so if they can somehow make it work on Switch, well then I'm impressed!

If this is your only way to play Control, then play Control this way!

Re: Feature: A Guide To Shopping In Japan's Retro Gaming Paradise, Akihabara

mid_55

I had a brilliant time shopping around there, loved every second! Got most of what I wanted, brought it all home and have never touched it since... the strange lure of collecting eh!?!

I didn't find Retro Game Camp, hard as I tried, but Mandarake was a real winner not mentioned here, I got those Mario Hanafuda cards for next to nothing.

Also, if you're intimidated by the busy nature of Akihabara, I found that Akamon Dori in Nagoya is a really nice street with an amazing selection, much more accessible, and not really more expensive. Highly recommended if you're leaving Tokyo.

Re: Review: Turok 2: Seeds of Evil - A Painfully Incomplete Version Of An N64 Classic

mid_55

@USWITCH64 I picked up just about all the highly rated 64 titles back in the late 90s, but this is the one big one that I just didn't "get".

Maybe I was too young, but I just found the areas looked a bit bland, and I got lost all the time... and ohhhh that fog!
I'm kinda tempted to give it a 2nd chance all these years later. To play the last great untouched (by me) N64 classic... someone convince me I need it!

Re: Poll: Have Your Joy-Con Been Drifting?

mid_55

OK, over 2,000 people (not a terrible sample size) and 75% have some kind of issue!

Anyone denying this is a thing now, or just saying it's people who don't look after their controllers... that argument does not hold up now.

Re: US Law Firm Opens "Switch Joy-Con Drift" Class Action Investigation

mid_55

@AlternateButtons Wish that were true, but in this case it's just not.

I've always taken care of every console and controller I've had, and never had a single issue (execpt with Dreamcast lasers... but yeah whatever!), and both my JoyCons are trash. I still use them a bit, but mostly pro controller. It's honestly just bad design leading to faults in a noticeable percentage of units. That affects a lot of people. I don't want to spend another 80 on something that probably has a 25% chance of also being broken....

Re: US Law Firm Opens "Switch Joy-Con Drift" Class Action Investigation

mid_55

@Not_Soos Anyone else had this?! I have this on one, and drift on the other! Oh dear!

Fixed the SL SR thing though, but it was a bit fiddly.
It's also due to very poor design. The cable fold for the rail inputs is flat like a 'V' and not like a 'U' shape, so at the point of the 'V' the metal connectors don't meet any more. I just about managed to wrap something around it to stop it from breaking connection, and voila! It works again... I took pics if anyone is interested to try it.

Re: Review: Yoshi's Crafted World - A Charming Construction Made From Familiar Materials

mid_55

@eRaz0r It gets better, the levels are actually really varied, and only the first half hour plods a bit. In the end there's more level and gameplay variety than Woolly World, but on the whole WW was the slightly cleaner platformer imo.

The music is a real let down though, after WW had brilliant songs throughout. This isn't all terrible, but quite often it's like a kid is playing a recorder with his nostrils.

Re: Hands On: There's More To Nintendo's Labo VR Than Meets The Eye

mid_55

Most NL readers seem to forget that sometimes, games aren't aimed at them.
This is Nintendo taking what sounds like a well-crafted experience, and bringing it to a young audience, which is just a sensible thing to do for the whole industry.
This could spawn the next generation of people interested in programming, and for many it'll be the first taste of VR.

Just because we're "gamers" everything isn't all about us on here.

Re: Review: Overcooked 2 (Switch)

mid_55

@SwitchVogel thanks for the reply!

Tried recalibrating motion and sticks, no luck... they're way off before calibration, then fixed, then other games are fine once again, and OC2 whacks them out of sync again... console is super close when we're playing as well, so I'm sure it's not distance related. For example 4 players on Mario Party or 1,2, Switch, I've had no issues like this at all... weird! Makes it a nightmare at best, so hard to get past some of the levels like this. On Reddit it looked like a few people were reporting similar but I've not heard much. Might write to Team17.

Re: Review: Overcooked 2 (Switch)

mid_55

@SwitchVogel Surprised to see people saying it's too easy, I'm loving the challenge!

As you mentioned, it requires more dexterity than before, sadly I'm having major joycon issues with this one. Never had trouble with other games, but OC2 seems to affect the stick calibration when played on TV or tabletop mode. It's honestly a game ruiner, you can't run over bridges or pick up/chop things with any accuracy, making some levels nigh on impossible, and totally infuriating! Even the bus can't drive properly...

I can't be the only one with this issue can I? I've been playing tons of Wolfenstein and Katamari lately, not a hint of an issue there ...

Re: FIFA 19 - The Best Soccer Game On Switch, But It's Hard Not To Feel Short-Changed

mid_55

I just got hold of a copy on sale for about £25. I've been considering giving it a go for a while, and it's good enough at that price.

I haven't touched an EA game in years, hate their expensive shovel ware model, but they have cleverly ripped a lot of good stuff from PES over the years, and this plays a good game, amazing when you consider it can go handheld.

It's important to note that only a cheap copy is worth it as it's not up to scratch (apparently) with other versions, but I have no interest in Ultimate Team or other staple FIFA modes. Taken at face value as a good handheld kickabout, this is a good buy on sale in my opinion.

Re: UK Gaming Magazines GamesMaster and GamesTM Set To Close Next Month

mid_55

@zool Let's face it, Super Play/N64/NGC/Ngamer was the only magazine that was really strong content-wise year on year. Once that died, I couldn't stand the step down in quality going to the others. I remember when I got a PS2 and a DC and expected their mags to be as good! I still bought NGC when I didn't have a GameCube as it was that far ahead.
How I can stand to read anything on NintendoLife I'll never know

Re: Ubisoft CEO Believes The Next Generation Of Consoles Will Be The Last

mid_55

@AlexOlney Quite! I can remember this idea being bandied about so many years back now that my brain hurts trying to remember it. The shift will continue towards download rather than physical, that makes sense, but to say consoles will die soon is surely nonsense.

The first of the big companies to make the "console-less" step might come close to death however!

Re: Japanese Gaming Magazine Famitsu Celebrates 1500 Issues

mid_55

I started out reading N64 Magazine and its future iterations (no pun intended for those who know what I mean...) and I was always really disappointed to find out that other English language magazines like ONM and some for the DC, PS2, etc. had nowhere near the same level of quality.

That continues today, despite there being some decent publishing houses surviving. I don't know what they fed that team, but it really worked... I miss that magazine!

Re: Poll: Six Months of the Switch - What Do You Think of Nintendo's Console Hybrid?

mid_55

As I write it's 31% for both 'mostly handheld' and 'mostly docked' play, and 27% for a mixture.

That in itself shows that people are enjoying Switch's versatility.

I did NOT expect to use it so much as a handheld but that quick boot up made it the perfect train commute system, and tabletop mode at work was great, and attracted a lot of impressed attention from other staff. I then enjoyed the benefit of when I had proper free time to relax and play on the big screen with a power boost and a comfy chair.

Looking forward to the next few years of Switch
